Podcast: A Notre Dame Podcast to be Named (Ep. 1)

The first episode recaps what happened against Duke – the good, the bad and the ugly of it all and gives updates on what Brian Kelly had to offer on Monday

Happy Tuesday to all.

I’ve known for a while, I was going to start a Notre Dame-specific podcast to keep the conversation going not just on Fighting Irish Wire but also in audio form. I just didn’t know where to bring it to.

Turns out for now I’ll do it myself.

I present to you the first episode of:

A Notre Dame Podcast to be Named
Anchor
Spotify

That’s where you can find it for now, hopefully in a matter of days, if not hours, it’ll be available on Apple Podcasts and some other distributors.

The first episode recaps what happened against Duke – the good, the bad and the ugly of it all and gives updates on what Brian Kelly had to offer on Monday. As the week goes on, we’ll preview Game 2 more and more, just like we will every day on Fighting Irish Wire.

In the meantime I need a few things from you:

  1.  You to subscribe and listen. I’ll be trying to do this as close to daily as possible and offering instant analysis to games or breaking news that may come up.
  2. Guest Ideas. Who would you love to hear discuss Notre Dame football? A national writer? A former player or coach? No idea is a bad one (OK, maybe a few are), but I’m interested to hear your ideas.
  3. Questions/Comments. You can leave them in the comments section here or tweet them to @NickShepkowski/@IrishWireND and I’ll try my best to answer/respond to them during shows.
  4. Friends of the Program. If you or someone you know wants to be my personal bag-man and treat me like I’m an SMU recruit in 1981 then I’m all ears.
  5. A NAME. I wanted to get this started but kept waiting while I  figured out the perfect name. Spoiler alert – I’m yet to. Feel free to submit any and all ideas the same way you would submit a question.  If I do end up loving and choosing what you come up with know when again allowed to socially, I’ll shake your hand and probably give you a bro-hug if we’re to ever meet in person. Or perhaps share an adult beverage or six with you.

Thanks for checking it all out and reading this far. If you don’t mind, a simple review, rating and share go a very long way and are all appreciated.

Have a great Tuesday and Go Irish.

Watch: Williams scores again, extends Irish lead to 17-6 over Duke

Check out Kyren Williams score his second touchdown of the game.

Kyren Williams earned the start at running back, and it is paying off today. Through a little over 2 quarters of football, Williams has run for 91 yards on 17 carries. Take a look at his second touchdown, this one going for 26 yards on 4th-and-1.

The running back has a chance to have a very solid opening game. Expect Williams continue to add on to his current rushing total.

Notre Dame will be a significant favorite when they open the season on Saturday against Duke as the Irish are appearing as nearly a three touchdown pick at most shops.

Duke coach David Cutcliffe met the media to start off game week and was very complimentary to quarterback Ian Book and the tenth ranked Fighting Irish.

“A year ago they dominated and his Book running ability was on display,” Cutcliffe said. “But he can throw it and he can throw it well and there’s not a weakness on their team. I would expect them to blend both pass and run. I know what his capabilities are.”

Book threw for 181 yards on 18 of 32 passing at Duke last November.  Four of those resulted in added 139 more yards on the ground in a game the Irish led 21-0 at one point and were in complete control of for the duration.

As for what Cutcliffe expects to see under first year offensive play-caller Tommy Rees, it’s more of the same.

“Brian Kelly’s offenses always have elements that they’re going to execute well. They’re going to be physical. I don’t think you’ll see Ian Book doing anything different than what he’s done in the past, not with that offensive line and their experience they’re going to stay on the same path. Everybody puts in new wrinkles here and there but the bottom line is to prepare the best you can on what you expect.”

Makes perfect sense to me, especially against a team that simply won’t put the same talent on the field that Notre Dame will be able to do.

Duke is coming off a season that saw them go just 5-7 overall and 3-5 in ACC play.  It was only the second time the last eight years that the Blue Devils didn’t qualify for a bowl which is saying a lot for a program that qualified for just two bowl appearances between 1961 and 2011.

Notre Dame’s Sweet Named ACC Player of the Week

Playing at the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, California, Sweet recorded 10 hits, six runs, eight RBI and a home run in six contests.

Notre Dame softball centerfielder Abby Sweet (junior, Hart High School/Newhall, California) was named the ACC Player of the Week for her efforts this weekend that helped the Irish to a 3-3 mark and included an upset win over No. 16 Arizona State.

Playing at the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, California, Sweet recorded 10 hits, six runs, eight RBI and a home run in six contests.  She also slugged a remarkable .850 while totaling 17 bases, hitting four doubles and stealing four bases in four tries.

Notre Dame sits with a 10-5 overall record and will travel to Duke this weekend for three games against the Blue Devils to kickoff ACC competition.  The Irish ranked third in the Pre-Season ACC Coaches Poll that was released in late January.

Notre Dame Women’s Basketball: Trying Season Continues at Duke

Haley Gorecki went on an 8-0 run by herself to draw Duke within one at 42-41 before Notre Dame’s final field goal of the night came with Sam Brunelle hitting her career-high fourth three and the Irish a 45-41 lead with 6:34 to go.

On a night that the Notre Dame Women’s basketball team played their best defensive quarter and half of the season, they fell in perhaps their most-frustrating loss of the season, a 50-47 decision at Duke on Thursday night as three turnovers in the final minute did the Irish in.

“I thought we lost that game entirely on our own – the turnovers were just so costly down the stretch. We couldn’t even get shots” Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said after the game.

The Irish got off to a very fast start, going on a 14-2 run in the first quarter and not allowing a point the final 6:37 of the first frame, taking a 14-4 lead to the second quarter.

Duke’s offense came alive to the tune of 16 second quarter points but Notre Dame’s Mikki Vaughn led the Irish with eight points in the quarter herself to help aid Notre Dame to 15 themselves in the second quarter which led to a 29-20 halftime lead.

A 9-0 Duke run in the third quarter cut the Irish lead to three at 34-31, but Notre Dame responded with a run of their own to stretch the lead back to 40-33 entering the fourth.

Destinee Walker kicked off the fourth with a layup that pushed the Irish lead to nine but unfortunately that accounted for half of her made field goals on the night and Notre Dame would score just five more points on the night.

Haley Gorecki went on an 8-0 run by herself to draw Duke within one at 42-41 before Notre Dame’s final field goal of the night came with Sam Brunelle hitting her career-high fourth three and the Irish a 45-41 lead with 6:34 to go.

The Irish however would be turnover-happy down the stretch and only score again by sinking a couple of free throws as Duke rallied to win 50-47 on their home court.

The loss drops Notre Dame to just 6-12 overall and 1-5 in ACC play while Duke improved to 9-8 overall and 3-3 in the ACC.

Notre Dame looks for their second conference win of the season again Sunday when they return home to take on Miami in a game that can be seen on ACC Network.
