Wisconsin vs Michigan State Game Preview

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Did Wisconsin snap out of it?

Granted, beating Northwestern is about as difficult as dogging the NFL for its roughing the passer rules, but after all the drama of the Paul Chryst firing, and after all the ugliness in the losses to Ohio State and Illinois, the Badgers looked the part again … sort of.

The 42-7 win wasn’t even that close, but it’s because the passing game clicked with six touchdown passes to go along with the 193 yards on the ground.

As long as the midrange throws are clicking and the rushing attack is effective, the defense should be able to do the rest. No one’s stopping Ohio State – no dogging the Badgers for getting ripped in that – but the D has held down everyone else, especially against the run.

Michigan State hasn’t hit 50 rushing yards in three of its last four games.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Michigan State Will Win

If the Spartans are ever going to get the season going under former Badger Mel Tucker, it has to start now.

The passing game has been okay. That’s partly because the rushing attack has been so bad, but it’s effective enough to push Wisconsin secondary that gives up plenty of yards.

Turning this around starts with stuffing the Badgers on the ground. Wisconsin isn’t running as easily as it normally does, it’s not controlling the clock like it does when it’s rolling, and forget the Northwestern win, Graham Mertz isn’t throwing that well.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan State is getting killed on the lines.

The offensive side isn’t doing a thing in pass protection for the ground game, and the defensive front isn’t nearly as disruptive as it needs to be.

The team will be jacked up enough at home to come up with a good first quarter, but the energy will start to fizzle. The Badgers will be balanced, but this week will be about the running game that takes over in the second half.

Jim Leonhard’s defense will handle everything else.

Wisconsin vs Michigan State Game Preview

Why Wisconsin Will Win

So what went wrong the a few weeks ago in the 86-64 loss to the Spartans?

Michigan State was amazing from the outside, it kept getting to the free throw line – the 22 free throws made were by a mile the most against the Badgers all year – and hitting 53% from the field helped.

This is an okay shooting Michigan State team, and it’s just that good on the line, but it’s not that amazing from the field and it doesn’t get to the free throw line all that much. The 28 attempts were the most by far since a game in mid-November.

The Badgers aren’t going to turn the ball over enough, Michigan State is going to turn it over a ton, and …

Why Michigan State Will Win

Yeah, Michigan State’s shooting against the Badgers the first time around wasn’t normal, but Wisconsin isn’t all that great at stopping teams on the inside.

If you can be patient, and if you can make that one extra pass, you will score inside against this D.

Wisconsin doesn’t rebound all that well, and it’s not all that great at hitting its shots from the outside. It has to get into a groove, go on a run or two coming off a few strong possessions, and then it usually just hangs around and wins because the other team will screw up more.

Here’s the problem …

What’s Going To Happen

If you’re not hitting 50% or better from the field against Wisconsin, forget it.

Providence is the only team to shoot under 50% and beat the Badgers, who are 17-1 when keeping teams from hitting half of their shots. That’s not to say the Spartans can’t do it again – they’re 12-0 when shooting better than 46% – but that’s pushing it.

They’ll come close enough, though. They’ll do just enough from the field, they’ll hit their free throws again, get plenty of second chance opportunities, and they’ll make it 10-1 in Breslin.

It’s not going to be easy, though.

No. 15 Michigan State needs to forget its road game last Sunday against Purdue. The team got killed 71-42 by the Boilermakers, marking MSU’s first conference loss of the season. Michigan State (13-4, 5-1) suffered its worst loss ever as a top-10 team. The Spartans had never lost as a top-10 team by more than 22 points. Purdue relied on its tough defense to keep MSU in check, especially Cassius Winston, who finished with 10 points, but also had nine turnovers. It marked the Spartans first loss since Dec. 3.

As for Wisconsin (11-6, 4-2), the team is coming off a nail-biting 56-54 win over No. 17 Maryland. In the closing seconds, Brad Davison drilled a three-pointer from the corner that proved to be the game-winner. It marked the Badgers’ third consecutive win over a ranked opponent, the other two coming against Penn State and Illinois. The last time Wisconsin won three consecutive games against ranked opponents was during the 2015-16 season. Wisconsin held an opponent under 60 points for the seventh time this season. Junior Nate Reuvers scored in double digits for the 13th time in 17 games, finishing with a team-high 17 points and five rebounds.
