Notre Dame vs. Boston College: A Betting Preview

The underdog has covered each of the last four times Notre Dame and Boston College have met up.

Notre Dame basketball has been playing better of late aside from one awful afternoon at Duke and has worked their way to .500 in ACC play at 8-8.  They haven’t however surpassed the .500 mark in conference play this season despite having a couple of chances to earlier this month before falling in road games against Duke and Virginia.

The Fighting Irish get another chance at getting over the .500 hump tonight as they’re in Boston College to take on an Eagles team who beat them back in December, 73-72 at Notre Dame.

Notre Dame is listed as a 4.5 point favorite over the Eagles tonight with the total set at 142.  A successful Boston College money-line bet would pay +105.

Notre Dame/Virginia Basketball: Five Numbers to Know

Notre Dame is still pretty far from serious NCAA Tournament consideration this March but a win over bubble team Virginia would certainly be a nice step Tuesday night.

Notre Dame has won four straight games as their ACC record has gone from just 2-6 to a much more respectable 6-6.  Things get tougher starting tonight though as Mike Brey and the Fighting Irish are in Charlottesville, Virginia to take on the defending national champions.

Notre Dame is still pretty far from serious NCAA Tournament consideration this March but a win over bubble team Virginia would certainly be a nice step Tuesday night.

With that preface, here are five numbers to be aware of heading into tonight’s Notre Dame vs. Virginia match-up.

Five Numbers:

1 – That’s the number of ACC teams who are scheduled to play three conference road games in a seven day stretch that season.  Which team is it, you ask?  Notre Dame as game two of three (at Duke, Saturday) takes place tonight.

2 – The number of wins Notre Dame has all-time in basketball against Virginia.  It leaves a lot to be desired seeing as the Cavaliers have taken 12 versus the Fighting Irish.

4 – Where Mr. Double-Double, John Mooney could be by the end of this evening in total rebounds by any Notre Dame player during the Mike Brey era.  His 815 are the sixth most for any Notre Dame player since Brey took over and with nine or more this evening he’ll pass both Zach Auguste (822) and Pat Connaughton (823) on the all-time list.

6 – Where Notre Dame enters Tuesday night’s contest ranked nationally in terms of assists per game.  Their 17.2 assists per night are the best in the ACC.  For comparison, Virginia is averaging 11.2 per game.

19.4 – That’s the amount of points per game more that Notre Dame scores than Virginia (76.2-56.8).  However, the Cavaliers also allow just 51.7 to Notre Dame’s 68.4 and have found success in their ways with a 15-7 overall record and 7-5 ACC mark.

Tipoff is set for 9 p.m. ET from Charlottesville, Virginia and can be seen on ESPN 2.

Notre Dame/Clemson: Tigers to be Without Leading Scorer

A win would also bring the Fighting Irish to .500 in ACC play this season.

Shortly ahead of game time in Clemson it appears that Notre Dame has caught a break as the Tigers will be without their leading scorer, Aamir Simms as he deals with the flu.

Simms leads Clemson with 13.4 points per game and is also their leading rebounder, pulling down over seven boards per contest.

14-8 Notre Dame is seeking just their third road win of the season. A win would also bring the Fighting Irish to .500 in ACC play this season.

You can catch the game at 6 p.m. ET on ACC Network.

Notre Dame Women’s Basketball: Trying Season Continues at Duke

Haley Gorecki went on an 8-0 run by herself to draw Duke within one at 42-41 before Notre Dame’s final field goal of the night came with Sam Brunelle hitting her career-high fourth three and the Irish a 45-41 lead with 6:34 to go.

On a night that the Notre Dame Women’s basketball team played their best defensive quarter and half of the season, they fell in perhaps their most-frustrating loss of the season, a 50-47 decision at Duke on Thursday night as three turnovers in the final minute did the Irish in.

“I thought we lost that game entirely on our own – the turnovers were just so costly down the stretch. We couldn’t even get shots” Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw said after the game.

The Irish got off to a very fast start, going on a 14-2 run in the first quarter and not allowing a point the final 6:37 of the first frame, taking a 14-4 lead to the second quarter.

Duke’s offense came alive to the tune of 16 second quarter points but Notre Dame’s Mikki Vaughn led the Irish with eight points in the quarter herself to help aid Notre Dame to 15 themselves in the second quarter which led to a 29-20 halftime lead.

A 9-0 Duke run in the third quarter cut the Irish lead to three at 34-31, but Notre Dame responded with a run of their own to stretch the lead back to 40-33 entering the fourth.

Destinee Walker kicked off the fourth with a layup that pushed the Irish lead to nine but unfortunately that accounted for half of her made field goals on the night and Notre Dame would score just five more points on the night.

Haley Gorecki went on an 8-0 run by herself to draw Duke within one at 42-41 before Notre Dame’s final field goal of the night came with Sam Brunelle hitting her career-high fourth three and the Irish a 45-41 lead with 6:34 to go.

The Irish however would be turnover-happy down the stretch and only score again by sinking a couple of free throws as Duke rallied to win 50-47 on their home court.

The loss drops Notre Dame to just 6-12 overall and 1-5 in ACC play while Duke improved to 9-8 overall and 3-3 in the ACC.

Notre Dame looks for their second conference win of the season again Sunday when they return home to take on Miami in a game that can be seen on ACC Network.
