Roger Goodell flipped Broncos’ vote on NFL rule change overnight

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has talked Broncos ownership into flipping their vote on rule changes twice this offseason.

At the NFL’s Spring League Meeting in Minnesota on Monday, commissioner Roger Goodell did not have the necessary 24 votes to adopt a rule change for kickoffs beginning with the 2023 season.

By Tuesday, several times flipped their vote and the rule change passed on a one-year trial period. This season, a team that fair catches a kickoff will be given the ball at their own 25-yard line instead of where the ball is caught.

To get enough support for that rule change, Goodell had to flip the votes of several team owners, including Denver Broncos co-owner/CEO Greg Penner, according to The MMQB’s Albert Breer.

This marks the second time this offseason that Penner has changed his mind on a rule change. Penner voted in favor of flexible Thursday Night Football scheduling on Monday after previously abstaining from a vote earlier this offseason.

It’s unclear how Goodell got Penner to change his votes, but one can only speculate that the Broncos owner used his leverage as bargaining power. Owners can trade votes for concessions or other areas, and perhaps — just wildly speculating — a future draft in Denver was part of the talks.

The Broncos will also want to host a future Super Bowl if they build a new super stadium in the coming years. Maybe the draft and Super Bowl had nothing to do with it, maybe it did.

We might never know how, but Goodell has gotten Denver’s ownership to flip votes twice this offseason.

Roger Goodell to receive multi-year contract extension as NFL Commissioner

Roger Goodell is expected to receive a contract extension from NFL owners

Roger Goodell will continue to be the facet that runs the place when it comes to NFL and its business endeavors.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday Goodell and NFL owners are expected to finalize a contract extension for the commissioner at next week’s league meetings in Phoenix.

Per Schefter:

The NFL’s compensation committee is slated to present the proposed extension to team owners during a special privileged session Tuesday afternoon. Only one member from each team is permitted in that meeting.

Goodell’s extension has been in the works since last season, when the compensation committee was granted permission by the full membership to get an extension done, according to sources. The sides have discussed a three-year extension, according to sources, but no length of time has been agreed to yet.

Goodell took over as commissioner from Paul Tagliabue on Sept. 1, 2006.

It has been reported Goodell earns more than $63 million annually on his current contract.

Peyton Manning chimes in on possibility of becoming NFL commissioner

Peyton Manning downplayed the possibility of becoming NFL commissioner, saying he’s not qualified for the role.

Peyton Manning is beloved by football fans, particularly by fans in Indianapolis and Denver.

It’s not just Colts and Broncos fans who love the former quarterback, though. The good-natured QB-turned-pitchman-turned-commentator had NFL fans calling for him to become the NFL’s commissioner after his excellent Pro Football Hall of Fame speech in 2021.

During a recent appearance on PFTPM with Mike Florio, Manning was asked about the possibility of one day leading the NFL.

“I’m not qualified, in my opinion,” Manning told Florio.

Manning then went on to praise current commissioner Roger Goodell before reiterating that it’s not a role he’s seeking.

“That’s just not something that’s on my radar,” the ex-QB said. “Specifically because I don’t think I’m qualified to do it.”

Manning has also said in the past that he’s not interested in becoming a coach at the NFL level (but he does coach his kids’ flag football teams). Manning has also shot down the idea of becoming an NFL GM, and he was not part of the new ownership group that acquired the Broncos earlier this year.

Manning has remained closely connected to the game, though. His Peyton’s Places series has been a hit on ESPN+, and football fans love when there are ManningCast broadcasts available for select Monday Night Football games.

In some ways, Manning already is the face of the NFL. Manning doesn’t need to become commissioner to promote the league, something he’s already doing well through various TV projects and media campaigns.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell calls for ‘urgent need for action’

NFL’s Roger Goodell issued a statement in light of the protests related to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell issued a statement Saturday afternoon in light of the protests related to the recent deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery.

Below is Goodell’s statement in its entirety:

“The NFL family is greatly saddened by the tragic events across our country. The protesters’ reactions to these incidents reflect the pain, anger and frustration that so many of us feel.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Mr. George Floyd and to those who have lost loved ones, including the families of Ms. Breonna Taylor in Louisville, and Mr. Ahmaud Arbery, the cousin of Tracy Walker of the Detroit Lions.

As current events dramatically underscore, there remains much more to do as a country and as a league. These tragedies inform the NFL’s commitment and our ongoing efforts. There remains an urgent need for action. We recognize the power of our platform in communities and as part of the fabric of American society. We embrace that responsibility and are committed to continuing the important work to address these systemic issues together with our players, clubs and partners.”
