Stay or go: Predicting the fate of all the Detroit Lions free agents

Which of the 18 unrestricted free agents will the Lions keep, and which ones will be suiting up elsewhere in 2024?

One of the harder parts of the offseason for NFL front offices is deciding which free agents they want to keep and which ones will have to leave. It’s a process Lions GM Brad Holmes and his Detroit front office staff are facing in the coming days.

The Lions have already made a couple of decisions, bringing back LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin and K Michael Badgley as pending free agents. That brings the total of unrestricted free agents for the Lions to 18 when the new league year starts on Wednesday, March 13th at 4 p.m. ET.

8 former Eagles are on AFC, NFC Championship rosters

The Philadelphia Eagles have 8 former players playing on AFC and NFC Championship rosters ahead of Sunday’s matchups.

The Eagles are home after a disappointing finish to their season that saw the team lose 6 of their final seven games, including a 32-9 loss to the Buccaneers in the NFC wild-card game.

One big reason for the downward spiral on both sides of the football can be found in free-agent losses that have thrived with other clubs.

As Philadelphia works to hire two new coordinators, eight former Eagles are set to play in the AFC and NFC title games, including two All-Pro caliber talents and one safety who should still be on the roster.

Chase Lucas, Dylan Drummond among latest Lions roster cutdowns

The Detroit Lions continue to make roster cuts ahead of the deadline, waiving Chase Lucas and Dylan Drummond in the latest round

With the roster cutdown deadline approaching on Tuesday, Lions GM Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell continue to make moves to get the active roster down to 53 players. The latest round of reported cuts on Monday includes a couple of players who many projected to make the final 53.

Among the notables reportedly waived on Monday are CB Chase Lucas and WR Dylan Drummond.

Lucas played well in the preseason, but it wasn’t enough to save the second-year cornerback. Detroit’s seventh-round pick in 2022 out of Arizona State is expected to return on the practice squad.

The same is true of Drummond, an undrafted rookie from Eastern Michigan who was one of the team’s top receivers in the preseason with nine receptions. His route running and ability to make catches away from his body stood out for Drummond.

Detroit is also axing three offensive linemen, per Dave Birkett of the Free Press. Undrafted rookie tackles Connor Galvin and Ryan Swoboda are both being waived, as is guard Kayode Awosika. As Birkett notes, those moves will leave the Lions with just eight offensive linemen on the initial 53-man roster after also releasing vets Bobby Hart and Germain Ifedi earlier.

Detroit is also waiving undrafted rookie QB Adrian Martinez, who got scant playing time in the last couple of weeks of camp and preseason.

Those moves would leave the Lions with 69 players left, meaning 13 more need to be cleared by 4 p.m. on Wednesday. One of those will be injured QB Nate Sudfeld, though how exactly he’s handled remains up in the air.

Predicting the 22 remaining Detroit Lions roster cutdowns

The Detroit Lions have 75 players on the active roster as of noon Monday and have to be down to 53 by 4 p.m. Tuesday

It’s almost time for the Detroit Lions initial 53-man roster to be set for the 2023 regular season. The team has already trimmed several players from the 90-man preseason limit, but there are more cutdowns to be made.

As of 12 p.m. ET on Monday, the Lions have 75 players still on the active roster. That leaves 22 more players to be removed from the active roster before 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Note that CB Emmanuel Moseley and QB Hendon Hooker are not currently on the active roster, so they don’t factor in. WR Jameson Williams begins serving his suspension after the cutdowns, so he’s not involved either.

Nate Sudfeld tore his ACL in the Lions’ preseason win over the Panthers

Sudfeld will miss the 2023 season after getting injured in the Lions’ preseason finale

Bad news on the injury front for Lions quarterback Nate Sudfeld. He is expected to miss the 2023 season after tearing his ACL in Friday night’s exhibition win over the Carolina Panthers.

Sudfeld had an awkward step and fall while trying to outrun a tackle near the Panthers’ sideline. After being examined by Carolina’s training staff for several minutes, Sudfeld left the field on a cart.

Before Monday’s practice, Lions head coach Dan Campbell wouldn’t speculate on the extent of Sudfeld’s injury, saying,

“I’m not going to confirm that. He’s getting a second opinion right now.”

Per several reports, that second opinion is that the team’s backup QB in 2022 did indeed tear his ACL.

Campbell continued,

“Well, if it is the deal with Nate, it’s awful, and I hate that for him. That’s tough because Nate’s given us everything he’s had and he came in last year and brought something to us, and somebody we were very comfortable with, enough to sign him back. And so, I hate that if that’s the way it goes here.”

Sudfeld had fallen behind newcomer Teddy Bridgewater on the Lions depth chart as Jared Goff’s primary backup. There has been discussion about the concept of keeping both Bridgewater and Sudfeld on the 53-man roster early in the season, but that is now a moot point.

The Lions have until Tuesday, August 29th at 4 p.m. ET to either release Sudfeld with an injury settlement or place him on injured reserve.

Nate Sudfeld’s knee injury makes the Lions QB decision easier

Nate Sudfeld’s knee injury makes the Lions QB decision easier when making the final 53-man roster

Not long after taking over for Teddy Bridgewater in the Detroit Lions’ preseason win over the Carolina Panthers, reserve QB Nate Sudfeld went down awkwardly on the Carolina sideline after a run. He stayed down and was tended to by the Panthers training staff before leaving the field on a cart.

After the game, head coach Dan Campbell didn’t give a big update on Sudfeld’s status. Campbell did offer that Sudfeld suffered a hyperextension and could “be out for a bit.”

The only question now is if Sudfeld will be out of a Lions uniform while he recuperates from the injury. A hyperextended knee is often a 4-week recovery, depending on associated factors. With the season starting in 12 days, that timeline pushes Sudfeld into being out for at least the first couple of games.

Now clearly the No. 3 quarterback in Detroit behind Jared Goff and Teddy Bridgewater, Sudfeld was extremely unlikely to ever see the field in the regular season to begin with. Bridgewater outdueled Sudfeld in the battle for No. 2, something that was abundantly clear on Friday night in Charlotte. The injury gives the Lions some clearer options on what to do with Sudfeld.

The most obvious is to waive Sudfeld with an injury designation. It’s the same move the team made with Saivion Smith and Denzel Mims recently. If Sudfeld clears waivers—which seems likely—he would revert to the Lions’ injured reserve list.

If the Lions really value Sudfeld enough to keep him on the active roster, he could slide through on the initial 53-man roster and then immediately get placed on injured reserve. That would keep Sudfeld out for a minimum of four games, which should be plenty of time for him to heal, barring any complications or a different diagnosis.

There is some appeal to this option, as it makes for an easy way to clear a roster spot for any player whom the Lions might claim off waivers after Tuesday’s initial cutdown. Of course, it means another player on the roster bubble gets popped on Tuesday. That exposes someone at a more imperative roster position than a “break the glass” emergency QB to being lost to another team.

Either way, the knee injury appears to be an unfortunate ending to Sudfeld’s stint as the Lions’ No. 2 quarterback. With undrafted rookie Adrian Martinez no real threat to get claimed on the waiver wire, the Lions can now stash the third QB on the practice squad and keep an extra linebacker, wide receiver or offensive lineman in its place.

Studs and Duds for the Lions preseason win against the Panthers

With the preseason in the books, here are this week’s Studs and Duds for the Detroit Lions preseason victory over the Carolina Panthers

The Detroit Lions have wrapped up their preseason with a 26-17 victory over the Carolina Panthers. As most of the Lions’ top players sat out, the coaches and management had the opportunity to closely observe the players who are on the brink of making the final roster. It will be intriguing to see which players the Lions choose, as many of them performed exceptionally well, making the decisions more difficult. Unfortunately, some players did not perform at their best and may have fallen behind in the roster selection.

Here are the Studs and Duds for the Lions in their preseason win against the Panthers.

Detroit Lions stock report after the second preseason game

Breaking down which Detroit Lions players saw their stocks rise and fall in the second preseason game, a loss to the Jaguars

The second exhibition game for the Detroit Lions ended in a disappointing, punchless 25-7 loss to the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars.

With nearly every player of significance sitting out, it was a chance for the depth players in Detroit to prove themselves. Some looked like bullish risers, while others saw their stocks grow more bearish.

Here are the Lions who rose up and those who fell back in the preseason loss to the Jagaurs.

Quick takeaways from the Lions 25-7 preseason loss to the Jaguars

Here’s what stood out in watching the Lions preseason loss to the Jaguars in real time

The Detroit Lions depth didn’t give the home fans in Ford Field much to cheer about on Saturday. The visiting Jacksonville Jaguars dominated the action in a 25-7 Detroit loss in the second exhibition game for both teams in the preseason.

With both teams sitting pretty much every starter and even some key reserves, this game was about depth players and the youngsters trying to prove themselves getting reps.

The Jaguars won the first half 12-0 in a stanza dominated by defensive play by both teams. There were just 13 combined first downs in the first half, nine by the Jaguars. The Lions did manage to score on a short TD pass from Nate Sudfeld to rookie WR Chase Cota, but the offensive highlights were few and far between for Detroit.

Here’s what stood out in watching the preseason game in real time.

Lions quarterback Nate Sudfeld struggles against the Giants

Breaking down the preseason start from Detroit Lions QB Nate Sudfeld against the New York Giants

It’s always hard to buy into everything you see in the NFL preseason. We obviously know that each team has plenty of players that do and don’t make the 53-man roster. But it’s the ultimate job interview for these players. They have to prove that they belong and that the team they play for made the right decision in drafting them or signing them.

In the first preseason game of the year, the Detroit Lions and New York Giants kicked off that interview process. For some players, it went great and for others, not so much.

In Detroit, they’ve got plenty of players that helped kick start this new regime. However, these players could be on the outside looking in and might end up finding themselves not being part of the Lions roster in a few weeks. It’s been a common trend for the backup quarterback spot in Detroit over recent years.

In previous years we saw quarterbacks such as Tim Boyle and David Blough have to battle through training camp and the preseason to earn their spots. Now, there’s another quarterback going through that same process. That quarterback is Nate Sudfeld.

Last season, he had signed with the Lions after being cut by the San Francisco 49ers. During his first season in Detroit, Sudfeld impressed the Lions coaching staff enough to earn a contract extension in the off-season. However, the Lions front office has made it clear that they’re looking to upgrade the quarterback position in Detroit. They want more competition in that room, and they’re doing everything they can to create it.

While Jared Goff looks to be the guy, it didn’t stop Detroit from drafting Hendon Hooker in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft. That alone made it feel like Sudfeld could be on the verge of having to find his 4th team in four years.

Fortunately for Sudfeld, he was able to earn plenty of reps as the Lions backup quarterback this summer. Much of this is due to Hooker likely starting the year on the PUP list. But the struggles for Sudfeld have been real. He has misplaced throws in camp and really had a rough outing against the Giants during the second day of joint practices earlier this week.

Looking for redemption, Sudfeld was given the chance to start against the Giants in the first preseason game. He went 15-for-28 for 194 yards, two interceptions and had a passer rating of 45.8 while playing three quarters for Detroit.

While head coach Dan Campbell had stated that he saw “more positive than negative” with Sudfeld, the tape tells a different story. For starters, the first play of the game was a pass that floated downfield while the Giants defense aligned with a single-high safety. As Sudfeld was targeting Jameson Williams on this pass, he was hit low in the pocket and the ball hung up in the air for an easy interception.

Even though the Lions defense held the Giants to three points, the next drive wasn’t much better for the veteran quarterback. The first play after the interception was a short-trap run where Sudfeld had just over 10 seconds on the play clock to read the defense. However, it felt like he rushed the snap and didn’t read the blitzing safety that was in the box and it led to rookie Jahmyr Gibbs getting stuffed in the backfield.

Ultimately, the second drive for the Lions offense was a four-and-out. They found themselves going for it on 4th-and-1 with a play-action pass to Sam LaPorta that hit him in the hands but the defender draped over his shoulder broke the pass up.

As the game progressed, Sudfeld found some success throwing to Dylan Drummond, Antoine Green and James Mitchell. There was even a 3rd-down pass in the first quarter where he extended the play outside of the pocket and he found Jahmyr Gibbs for a first down.

Unfortunately, he did have another interception late in the 2nd quarter when throwing over the middle of the field while targeting Jameson Williams. It looked as if Williams could have put his hands up to attempt the catch but didn’t as he had tight coverage around him. This ultimately led to the ball hitting Giants safety Dane Belton in the hands for a big return. This set up a touchdown for the Giants and they took a 13-3 lead going into the half.

Certainly not every bad play was Sudfeld’s fault in the first preseason game. At the end of the first half, he hit Dylan Drummond in the chest on a jump ball in the end-zone but it was dropped. Meanwhile, his best throw of the night was a deep throw to Jameson Williams that was dropped by the second-year receiver.

But the struggles were real though for Sudfeld on Friday night. He’ll need to trust his ability to move outside of the pocket and ultimately, he needs to improve with his pre-snap communication. There were far too many instances where he rushed into taking the snap and it led to tackles for loss or miscues on certain throws.

The way Dan Campbell was talking after the game, it sounds like Sudfeld did enough to hold off rookie Adrian Martinez from taking reps from him. However, Sudfeld will need to get better if he wants to beat out Teddy Bridgewater for the backup quarterback spot.

Head coach Dan Campbell has made it evident that “they need to get Teddy some reps.” The way it’s shaping up is that we’ll see plenty of reps from Teddy and Nate for the QB2 battle in Detroit. I doubt that Sudfeld gets another three quarters of play to prove what he can and cannot do so he’ll need to make every play count against the Jacksonville Jaguars next week.
