Report: Steelers looking to re-sign RB Najee Harris ahead of free agency

Could the Steelers bring back Najee Harris?

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris finished with 1,043 rushing yards to lead the team. It was the fourth time in four seasons Harris has topped 1,000 yards. But in a league where elite running backs are the focal point of their offenses, what Harris is doing could be summed up as very average.

This certainly played a role in why the Steelers didn’t pick up Harris’ fifth-year option and why he could be hitting free agency very soon. But according to Steelers beat writer Gerry Dulac, there is a “strong possibility” the Steelers re-sign him sooner rather than later.

Frankly, we are torn on whether to keep Harris or not. On one hand, Harris’ effort and energy are hard to match. Harris brings his best every week. This might be the exact reason he shouldn’t come back. If the Steelers are going to lean so heavily on the run game, they need more dynamic playmakers in the backfield who offer the threat of long runs.

2025 NFL Draft could be a goldmine for running back-needy Steelers

The Steelers may need to reload at running back in 2025, and this draft class could offer the perfect solution to bolster their ground game.

A Najee Harris-less Steelers rushing attack is what 2025 may have in store, and while RB Jaylen Warren has been dynamic in both the receiving and running game, he has yet to prove he can withstand the full workload of the rushing attack. However, this issue may be easily solved in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Enter the 2025 NFL Draft’s running backs to alleviate these concerns: Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty, North Carolina’s Omarion Hampton, Arizona State’s Cam Skattebo, Tennessee’s Dylan Sampson, Kansas’ Devin Neal, and Ohio State’s duo of TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins—any of these prospects may be drafted within the first two rounds.

Jeanty is without a doubt the strongest of these running backs, projected to go within the first 16 picks of the draft, but strong talent may exist beyond, such as Skattebo and Judkins in the second or third round.

This class is arguably the strongest running back class in recent memory, and the Pittsburgh Steelers have positioned themselves perfectly to take advantage of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Steelers 4th-down conversation rate a disservice to the talent on the roster

The Steelers were among the worst in the NFL in converting fourth downs.

The story of the Pittsburgh Steelers 2024 season was how poorly the re-tooled offense performed. Statistically, there was no good news for the Steelers offense. This was a sore spot for head coach Mike Tomlin in every post-game press conference, especially when it came to possession downs.

This brings us to the Steelers and their fourth-down conversion rate. As you can see from the graphic below, few teams were as bad on fourth down as the Steelers. According to Pro Football Reference, the Steelers went for it 18 times in 2024. They converted seven of those. Of those 18, six of them were passing plays, which only resulted in a conversion.

For a roster that has running backs Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren along with quarterback Justin Fields, this is inexcusable. There was some level of disconnect between the talent on this roster and the coaching decisions made by Tomlin. Of all the cases of misusing the players on offense, this has to rank right up there with the unwillingness to throw to the middle of the field.

Steelers insider predicts RB Najee Harris 2025 free agency price tag

Steelers insider Gerry Dulac predicts Najee Harris could demand a three-year, $25-30 million contract. Will Pittsburgh re-sign him?

The Pittsburgh Steelers have several question marks surrounding key players leaving their roster in 2025 free agency. One of the biggest decisions to make will be whether to re-sign RB Najee Harris, who successfully made it four straight seasons with 1,000 rushing yards to conclude 2024.

Steelers insider Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette was asked during his chat on Wednesday what Harris may demand in free agency. While the situation is always changing, Dulac reluctantly predicted that Harris could demand a three-year contract worth upwards of $25 to $30 million.

Dulac finished off answering the question with a powerful compliment for Harris, stating:

“He is one of only 14 players to begin their career with four 1,000-yard seasons. What’s the price tag on that?”

If Harris’ contract averages $10 million a year, the Pittsburgh Steelers may be wise to re-sign the cheaper option—RB Jaylen Warren—while also drafting a stud RB in the early rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Najee Harris and Pat Freiermuth recreate Ben Roethlisberger and Maurkice Pouncey iconic photograph

Najee Harris and Pat Freiermuth share an emotional moment reminiscent of the iconic Roethlisberger-Pouncey photo after the Wild-Card loss.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are magical in the sense that they can capture the full range of emotions from their Black and Gold faithful—especially when it pertains to fan-favorite players leaving the Steel City.

One of the most iconic Pittsburgh photographs of two teammates spending their final moments on the field together dates back to January 10, 2021: the day Steelers legends C Maurkice Pouncey and Ben Roethlisberger played their last snap together.

The Steelers were knocked out of the playoffs by the Cleveland Browns, and the two shared an emotional moment, forever captured by the photograph seen below:

Fans hoping for some time between similarly emotional moments might have their hearts broken, as RB Najee Harris and Pat Freiermuth shared a similar heart-to-heart with one another following the Wild-Card loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

While Freiermuth is under contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers through the 2028 season, Harris is scheduled to hit free agency in 2025—making an impending split between these draft classmates and close friends seem likely.

Their moment is eerily similar to what Roethlisberger and Pouncey experienced: from the Wild-Card loss to an AFC North rival, to their potential final game together, and to the photo, as seen below with Harris and Freiermuth:

If Harris truly leaves this offseason, I think I speak for every Steelers fan when I say: thank you, Najee, for an incredible four years.

Who was the Steelers’ true offensive MVP in 2024?

Zach Frazier emerged as the true MVP of the Steelers’ offense in 2024, anchoring the line and solidifying the center position as a rookie.

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2024 regular season has come and gone, and while fans eagerly anticipate what the 2025 offseason may bring, it is important to recognize the performances that stood out the most for the Steel City this season.

After former All-Pro C Maurkice Pouncey retired at the end of the 2020 season, the Pittsburgh Steelers struggled to fill the void he left behind, with Kendrick Green and Mason Cole unable to step into the former Pro Bowler’s shoes.

However, for the first time in four seasons, the Steelers no longer have any concerns about the center position—all thanks to their 2024 second-round selection, C Zach Frazier from West Virginia.

Frazier’s ability to pass protect was outstanding. Through 15 regular season games, the rookie center gave up only two sacks and two QB hits. His dominance in run blocking is where he truly excelled, opening up interior run lanes with ease for RBs Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren.

While the Pittsburgh offense fell apart in the second half of the season, one player consistently performed at an elite level week after week: that player is none other than Frazier—who was without a doubt, the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive MVP this season.
