Texans place C-G Kendrick Green on injured reserve among roster moves

The Houston Texans moved Kendrick Green to injured reserve among their other roster moves on the first practice day of Week 5.

The Houston Texans have been busy on the first day of practice for Week 5.

The Texans placed center-guard Kendrick Green on injured reserve. Houston will now have to come up with another solution at left guard.

Houston also signed defensive end Derek Rivers from the practice squad to the active roster.

The Texans restored safety Brandon Hill to the practice squad. The seventh-rounder had been placed on the practice squad/injured list in Week 1.

Houston also signed defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth to the practice squad. The 28-year-old played only in Week 14 for the Texans last year, but recorded four combined tackles and a tackle for loss.

Texans coach DeMeco Ryans counting on experience to fix OL

Houston Texans coach DeMeco Ryans is expecting the combination of experience and reps to solidify the offensive line.

No matter a team’s strength, attrition and availability issues can decimate a position group.

Such is life for the Houston Texans, who had a solid five-man front along the offensive line early in training camp. However, a torn ACL and MCL for starting center Scott Quessenberry, a season-ending shoulder injury for Kenyon Green, right tackle Tytus Howard fracturing his hand, and promising rookie center Juice Scruggs starting out on injured reserve has compromised Houston.

The reality is the Texans have a hardship to work through entering Week 1.

The Texans have addressed the problem the best they can with the additions of Kendrick Green and Josh Jones. Houston coach DeMeco Ryans is hopeful the veterans will be able to use their experience to form cohesion throughout the upcoming game weeks.

“When it comes to the offensive line and having guys who have played, at the end of the day, everyone has to do their job,” Ryans said. “Guys are dialed in with meeting time, with preparation – all guys have to do is do their job and do it as well as they can do it and that’s all we can ask for. Over time, they’ll continue to gel together and come together as one. All we need guys to do is to go out and be a professional and do what they need to do to get their job done.”

The offensive line will have to be a quick study throughout the room as Houston kicks off their season Sept. 10 against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium.

Texans trade with Steelers for OL Kendrick Green

The Houston Texans traded with the Pittsburgh Steelers for offensive lineman Kendrick Green.

The Houston Texans are looking to outside talent to help with the attrition along the offensive line.

According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV, the Texans are trading with the Pittsburgh Steelers to acquire former 2021 third-round pick Kendrick Green. The Texans are giving up a 2025 sixth-round pick.

While the injuries affecting left guard Kenyon Green and center Juice Scruggs are considered short-term injuries, and right tackle Tytus Howard is nearing a photo-finish return for Opening Day as he recovers from a broken hand, the Texans still need to solidify their offensive line reserves as they construct a 53-man roster.

Green, 24, started 15 games at center for the Steelers in 2021. Green moved to guard in 2022, but never saw any game day activations throughout the year.

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin with harsh reality on Kendrick Green: ‘Not good enough’

Mike Tomlin offered no ringing endorsement of the play of Steelers center Kendrick Green.

For a second-straight preseason game, Pittsburgh Steelers backup center and part-time fullback Kendrick Green put out a very poor performance. Green came in to replace Mason Cole Saturday night against the Buffalo Bills and did very little to make it seem like he is going to make the final 53-man roster.

After the game, head coach Mike Tomlin kept it concise when it came to describing how Green performed.

“Not good enough,” Tomlin said. “Routine things routinely.”

Green had one bad snap that went over the head of quarterback Mason Rudolph that the Bills recovered deep in Steelers territory. They turned that poor snap into a touchdown, and you know that did not sit well with Tomlin.

The Steelers have one more preseason game to do two things. First, can Green do enough to prove to the coaches he can be a viable backup center? And if he cannot, who will the coaches trust to play that role on offense?

6 offensive linemen Saints could target in trades after Trai Turner injury

Offensive line depth is important to the Saints. Here are six options who could be available for trades after Friday’s Trai Turner injury:

Offensive line depth is important to the New Orleans Saints, who took quick action to replace backup guard Billy Price with former Pro Bowler Trai Turner when Price failed his physical. But now they need to replace Turner after he went down with a season-ending injury at Friday’s training camp practice.

It’s more likely that the Saints will look to sign another free agent to compete for the backup job, but here are six options who could be available for trades. Fans would like to think that other teams are willing to give up All-Pro talents for peanuts, but keep in mind that anyone available at this time of the year is likely already on the way out with their current team. Beggars (like the Saints) can’t exactly be choosers.

Mike Tomlin is REALLY unhappy with Pittsburgh’s offensive line

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has reviewed his offensive line, and he is more than willing to make his displeasure known.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is one of the better interviews in the NFL, and that’s been the case for years. Just as Tomlin can wax eloquent on the state of his team and life in general, he can also get straight to the point. Tomlin was in a mood to do the latter after reviewing the tape of his offensive line following Saturday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars and their surprisingly snappy defensive front. All three of Pittsburgh’s quarterbacks — Kenny Pickett, Mitch Trubisky, and Mason Rudolph — had defenders in their faces far too often for Tomlin’s taste, and he was making that clear in word and deed.

“Today was about the evaluation of our tape and then coming out here and doing what was appropriate relative to what we saw on tape,” Tomlin told the media on Monday. “We made some corrections this morning, some things that we talked about and some things that we didn’t talk about, and then we came out here and had a good workday. We’ll analyze this and then as a staff, we’ll start leaning in on some Detroit prep in preparation for our mock week.”

Asked to be more specific, Tomlin was happy to do so — to a point.

“There wasn’t enough detail from a fine motor skill standpoint, details relative to their position. They didn’t play with enough of an edge individually and collectively. The things that are on our tape, we’ve got to own, and I think they’ll be ready to do that.”

But Tomlin stopped there from an explanation standpoint.

“I’m not delving into the details with you guys. They know where I stand and what I expect, and it’s going to be fun to watch them work and respond to that adversity this week.”

Left tackle Dan Moore Jr. was likely the primary culprit — per Pro Football Focus, he allowed a sack and three quarterback hits against the Jaguars on 28 pass-blocking reps. This after allowing a sack and a quarterback hurry against the Seahawks in the prior week of the preseason.

Moore (No. 65) looked pretty overwhelmed when asked to handle pass-rusher Arden Key (No. 49) on an inside-to-outside move.

Left guard Kendrick Green (No. 53), who allowed two quarterback hits and a quarterback hurry against the Jaguars (and multiple pressures against the Seahawks), didn’t help his case, either. Key was the defender to deal with in this case, as well, and… well, you don’t often see a pancake bull-rush, but you’re about to right here.

Tomlin was asked whether the left guard position would come down to Sunday’s game against the Lions, and it sounds as if everybody in the building with an offensive line position should be on high alert.

“Man, a lot of spots will come down to this work. This work is weighted differently and appropriately so. The in-stadium work is significant, and increasingly so the more stadium exposure you get. So, make no mistake, this is a significant game for a lot of people.”

Left guard Kevin Dotson seemed to evade Tomlin’s wrath — he “showed some things,” as the coach said — so that could be a discussion.

One of the few Steelers offensive linemen who has shown more than “some things” is left tackle Chukwuma Okorafor, who made this week’s Secret Superstars list after allowing no pressures of any kind this preseason, and looking quite good against Jaguars first-overall pick Travon Walker.

The Steelers added offensive lineman Adrian Ealy to their roster this week. When asked if this was a message to the rest of the line, Tomlin said, “I don’t send messages. I just make moves.”

What does he hope that Ealy will bring to the team?

“Quality play.”

Alrighty then! So, if you’re playing offensive line for the Steelers this week, you may not be for much longer, and the final preseason game would be the big test.

What we know for sure is that Mike Tomlin is not impressed, and he’s made that abundantly clear.

Steelers C Kendrick Green: ‘No excuse’ for miscues on snaps

Rookies will make rookie mistakes and Steelers center Kendrick Green made plenty of them in Pittsburgh’s tie with the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

Rookies will make rookie mistakes, and Pittsburgh Steelers center Kendrick Green made plenty of them in their tie with the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

Green had a few errant snaps throughout the game in critical situations. He had opportunities to place the blame on the inclement weather or Mason Rudolph at quarterback but chose to take the high road when asked about the snap miscues.

“No excuse for it, honestly; you just can’t have it,” Green said to the Steelers media on Friday.

In his final stray snap of the game, Green sent the ball sailing over Rudolph’s head with running back Najee Harris recovering. The critical overtime mistake set the Steelers up for a third-and-26. The way things had been going for the Steelers, they weren’t going to convert. And they didn’t.

Rudolph’s pass was even too high for 6-foot-5 tight tend Pat Freiermuth, and it was nearly intercepted.

As Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said in his press conference this week, Green just has to get the snaps down. “We’re just gonna ask that guy to snap the ball in a proficient professional manner, and we’re gonna move on with our life.”

Steelers vs. Bills injury update: Good and bad news from Pittsburgh

An injury update ahead of the Pittsburgh Steelers Week 1 matchup against Buffalo Bills was released.

Good news or bad news: Which do you want to first?

I’ll start with the bad. The big injury news out of Pittsburgh Steelers practice on Thursday had to do with Alex Highsmith. The groin injury that limited him on Wednesday kept him out today. The severity of the injury is unknown, but it could keep the second-year linebacker out of the lineup on Sunday versus the Buffalo Bills.

Now for the good news. Tyson Alualu (elbow) and Kendrick Green (thumb), who did not fully practice on Wednesday, were a full go today.

The Steelers practice for a final time in Pittsburgh tomorrow before they head to Buffalo on Saturday.

4 rookies on Steelers initial Week 1 depth chart to start versus Buffalo Bills

Of Pittsburgh’s eight remaining rookies, half are in line to start Week 1 in Buffalo. Not too shabby for the Steelers 2021 draft class.

The first depth chart of the Pittsburgh Steelers 2021 season was revealed on Monday. Of the five remaining rookies, four are in line to start Week 1 in Buffalo. Not too shabby.

Steelers rookie C Kendrick Green demoted on Pittsburgh’s official depth chart

One observation from the Steelers first official depth chart post-cuts is that their rookie center was relegated to reserves.

One observation from the Pittsburgh Steelers first official depth chart post-cuts is that rookie center Kendrick Green is not the starter. Instead, second-year lineman J.C. Hassenauer earned that right.

Selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft, Green worked with the Steelers first team during the preseason, but was not impressing the brass.

[lawrence-related id=494538]

Short of going out to find a more talented center, Hassenauer has the experience head coach Mike Tomlin wants from a player at such a critical position — at least to start the season. Hassenauer was part of the Steelers 2019 practice squad and signed to a one-year deal in March. In place of the injured Maurkice Pouncey, Hassenhauer was sufficient in four starts last year.

Things can always change with 13 days until the Pittsburgh Steelers kick off their 2021 season in Buffalo — but it’s doubtful.
