Eagles agree to deal with linebacker Myles Jack

The Philadelphia #Eagles have agreed to a deal with free agent linebacker Myles Jack

Howie Roseman said he’d eventually address the linebacker position, and on Sunday evening, Philadelphia signed Myles Jack to a deal.

Philadelphia released Davion Taylor on Sunday, and the team added depth after Nakobe Dean suffered an ankle injury.

Jack played seven seasons for the Jaguars and Steelers. He had 396 solo tackles, 221 assists, 6.5 sacks, four fumble recoveries, and three interceptions.

List of notable free agents after first week of training camp

There are some big-name options still available in free agency.

It’s usually slim pickings on the free agent market around this time of the year, but surprisingly, there are still several big-name players out there that remain unsigned.

Most of the notable talent is at the running back position with at least two or three potential NFL starters on the list. The Patriots could certainly use help at that position with Ty Montgomery going down with an injury.

They have mostly leaned on Kevin Harris and Pierre Strong Jr. as their top options behind Rhamondre Stevenson. Harris looks the most improved of the two, and they could make the decision to stick with him in the end.

However, they have visited with a few players on this list, including Ezekiel Elliott, Darrell Henderson and Leonard Fournette.

They’ve also reportedly considered a future visit with Dalvin Cook.

But there are more than just running backs on this list of NFL talent. Let’s take a look at some of the more notable unsigned free agents.

Howie Roseman says Eagles will keep their options open at linebacker position

During his presser to open up the first practice for Philadelphia’s 2023 training camp, GM Howie Roseman says Eagles“will keep their options open” at the linebacke rposition

The Eagles are always doing their due diligence on potential roster additions, and we’re wondering if any of the top remaining NFL free agents would fit in Philadelphia.

The Birds are stacked at almost every position outside of the linebacker position.

Philadelphia has Nakobe Dean and Nicholas Morrow but could look to add more depth with just Christian Ellis, Shaun Bradley, and Davion Taylor as reserves.

During his Wednesday press conference with head coach Nick Sirianni, Philadelphia’s GM said he’d address the linebacker position if necessary.

With Day 2 of the Eagles’ training camp scheduled for Thursday, we’re looking at a handful of free-agent linebackers that could fit the scheme.

3 free agent linebackers the Browns should consider signing before camp

The team could really benefit from another veteran linebacker addition

Heading into training camp later this month one of the biggest issues that remains in the linebacker room for the Cleveland Browns. The team decided to mostly just retain what they had and haven’t made any moves to improve the group. A healthy Anthony Walker will make the room better than the end of last season but that’s if he can stay healthy in 2023. Could an addition like Myles Jack be in the cards for the Browns?

The team added undrafted free agent Mohamoud Diabate but chose to not use any of their draft picks on a linebacker. Though improved defensive line play will help the linebackers along with a scheme that doesn’t utilize them much it would make many feel a lot better if they added another veteran.

Let’s take a look at three veteran free-agent options that remain at linebacker before training camp.

10 best remaining free agents the Eagles could target after NFL draft

The 2023 NFL draft is complete, and Philadelphia’s roster is stacked, but we’re looking at the10 best remaining free agents the Eagles could target

The 2023 NFL draft is in the books, and Philadelphia Eagles have welcomed five new drafted rookies to the roster while working to sign an undrafted free agent class.

Now, the third wave of free agency is underway, and Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has an opportunity to address some positions that still need attention following the draft.

Philadelphia is stacked on both sides of the football but could look for depth at edge rusher, punter, tight end, and linebacker.

With the draft complete, all free-agent signings will no longer count against the compensatory formula, so we could start seeing some teams making moves.

Here’s a look at some of the best available free agents the Eagles could target in this third wave of free agency:

Myles Jack inducted into Jacksonville Sports Hall of Fame

Former Jaguars linebacker Myles Jack was inducted as the second member of the soon-to-open Jacksonville Sports Hall of Fame.

Former Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Myles Jack became the second member of the newly created Jacksonville Sports Hall of Fame on Sunday night.

The new Hall of Fame, which is set to open this summer at the Community First Igloo, was created in part by the ECHL’s Jacksonville Icemen and seeks to honor athletes who not only made a difference in sports, but “also made significant impacts to the communities of Northeast Florida.”

Jack, 27, was the Jaguars’ second-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft and started 82 games in six seasons with the team. He recorded 6.5 sacks, three interceptions, and more than 500 tackles for Jacksonville before he was released in 2022. He is currently a free agent after spending last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

During his time with the Jaguars, Jack earned the team’s Walter Payton Man of the Year Award nomination for his work in the community. The linebacker awarded scholarships to Edward Waters College, a historically Black college located in Jacksonville, and did annual drives to provide children with schools supplies, clothes, backpacks, and shoes.

In March, former NFL quarterback and Jaguars tight end Tim Tebow was announced as the first member of the Jacksonville Sports Hall of Fame.

3 ways the Bills can replace Tremaine Edmunds

3 ways the #Bills can replace Tremaine Edmunds (via @jdiloro):

The Buffalo Bills need to fill a massive hole on their defense, as Tremaine Edmunds officially left the team at the start of the free agency period. Edmunds, who started 74 games in five seasons in Buffalo, was a central figure for the Bills defense.

Edmunds, who signed with the Chicago Bears, improved quite a bit since the Bills drafted him in the first round of the 2018 draft. There were some growing pains as Edmunds, one of the youngest players in the league to take the field during his rookie season, developed into a defensive stalwart.

Edmunds did a little bit of everything well on defense for the Bills. He turned his progress as a young star into a four-year, $72 million contract from the Bears.

Now, Buffalo faces a challenge that they have not had to worry about during the Sean McDermott era: Replace a central figure whom the team developed. Edmunds’ athleticism and ability to read opponents will be missed.

The Bills can move in several different directions with how to fill this void on the defense. Here’s breaking down three of those:

Former Jaguars LB Myles Jack cut by Steelers after 1 season

Myles Jack didn’t find much success in his first stop after six years with the Jaguars.

Myles Jack is back on the open market, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, just one year after he was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars and scooped up by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Jack, 27, was a second-round pick for the Jaguars in the 2016 NFL Draft and started 82 games for the team over his six seasons with the franchise. In 2019, Jack signed a four-year, $57 million contract extension, but he was released shortly after the team signed Foye Oluokun last offseason.

Pittsburgh gave Jack a two-year, $16 million deal, but the linebacker struggled in his first season with the team. He recorded three tackles for loss, three passes defended, and 104 tackles, but didn’t log an interception, forced fumble, or sack in 13 games. Late in the season, Jack was sidelined with a groin injury.

Jack finished the 2022 season with a 53.6 grade from Pro Football Focus.

The Steelers will eat $3.25 million in dead money by cutting Jack and will save $8 million in cap space.

Jags have 12th highest dead cap figure this season

The Jags are set to enter the season with a dead cap figure just over $23 million, which is the 12th highest currently.

The Jacksonville Jaguars aren’t unfamiliar with dead cap charges occupying their cap space with notables like quarterback Nick Foles being traded in 2020 just one year after signing with the team on a four-year deal. They also released Blake Bortles early into his second contract, which put the Jags in a situation where they took on a $16.5 million dead cap hit in 2019.

When it comes to the 2022 season, though, the Jags currently have the 12th highest dead cap figure (just over $23 million), according to Over the Cap. And while it would be great for that figure to be lower, it’s far from the figure that the Atlanta Falcons hold, standing atop the list with a $63.2 million figure due to the Matt Ryan trade.

When breaking down the Jags’ current projected dead cap figure, there are eight players who the Jags are paying that aren’t on the team. The one who carries the highest figure is former linebacker Joe Schobert (just over $9.9 million), who the Jags traded to Pittsburgh last season.

As for the rest of the list, it includes other notables like linebacker Myles Jack and C.J. Henderson, along with a few others who have cap hit figures that aren’t major.

Position Player Dead cap hit
LB Joe Schobert $9,937,500
CB C.J. Henderson $6,240,432
LB Myles Jack $4,800,000
K  Josh Lambo $875,000
RB  Carlos Hyde $450,000
LB Quincy Williams $205,545
WR Collin Johnson $153,576
WR Jalen Camp $123,219

The good news is that the Jags currently don’t have any dead cap money on their books for next season — at least for now. Time will tell if that changes, but the team appears to be on the right track when it comes to having a healthier dead cap figure than in the past and present.

Myles Jack discusses difference in culture between Steelers and Jags

Myles Jack talked about the difference in culture between the Steelers and Jags recently after being in Pittsburgh for just over two months.

When the Jacksonville Jaguars take the field this regular season, the team is going to look significantly different than it did in 2021 and the years before. One of the biggest differences on the defensive side will be that the team will be without long-time linebacker Myles Jack.

The team released Jack the week of free agency, and it seems the reason for that may have been for salary cap reasons. The decision came a day after they agreed to terms with interior linebacker Foyesade Oluokun, who signed a three-year deal worth $46.5 million with $28 million guaranteed.

Jack had been with the Jags since 2016 and was one of the team’s longest- tenured players. Needless to say, his departure was bittersweet for some fans, but it allowed Jack to seek a change of scenery after enduring a lot of coaching changes and dysfunction in Jacksonville.

It didn’t take long for Jack to find a new home as he ended up signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers on March 16. The move made a ton of sense as coach Mike Tomlin has expressed a great deal of respect for the Jags’ defense in the past as he’s battled them multiple times.

As for Jack, he was able to go from an organization that had been on shaky ground for much of his tenure there, to an organization most would say is a world-class one from the perspective of players. A big reason for that is the culture that’s been established by the organization, which is something Jack noticed immediately after spending six regular seasons in Jacksonville.

“It’s the culture man and that’s what people always say, but coming from where I came from and coming here, you see why this team is successful,” Jack said when asked about what stood out to him about the Steelers. “The mission is clear, there’s no secrets. If there’s a problem, it gets addressed right then and there. And I feel like that’s the only way to win — if everybody is held accountable. So I have enjoyed it, it’s been great.”

[H/T to Trib Live for quotes.]

One could understand Jack’s statements, especially after what he witnessed last season under Urban Meyer. Despite several incidents that started almost immediately into his tenure, it wasn’t until December that the Jags decided to fire Meyer when the damage was already done.

When looking back at his career, there was a brief time when Jack was able to witness the Jags be successful, and that was in 2017 when they defeated Pittsburgh twice at Heinz Field. And while he says he’s been careful not to mention it around his new teammates, he did remember how impressive the crowds were in both matchups.

“That was a fun year, for sure,” Jack said. “But the main thing I remember (about Pittsburgh) is the crowd, because we didn’t get too many crowds like that in Jacksonville. So, just seeing the (Terrible) Towels going crazy… the energy and atmosphere, coming out pregame, hearing the crowd go crazy, the energy. Because typically in Jacksonville we didn’t get too many games that were really packed like that.”

In defense of the Jags’ fanbase, they weren’t given a lot to pack the stands for aside from in 2017. Hopefully, that and the culture will change in Duval soon, which will create a culture that players and fans will enjoy.

Heading forward, things could be positive for both the Jags and Jack. The team got a new head coach in Doug Pederson, who has won a Super Bowl and could get the best out of Trevor Lawrence.

As for Jack, he may have seen the last losing season of his career as Tomlin has never had a season below .500. And while Jags fans have a big-time rivalry with the Steelers, it would be understandable to see some of them root for the individual success of No. 51 in black and gold.
