Cowboys rookie LT Tyler Guyton faces toughest challenge of year in Week 1

Fortunately for the rookie, it’s all up from Week 1 when it comes to first-year difficulties. | From @ReidDHanson

The Cowboys are going to find out pretty darn quickly this season what they have in their rookie left tackle Tyler Guyton. The heir to Tyron Smith has big shoes to fill and arguably the toughest match-up in the NFL right of the gate in 2024.

Facing Cleveland in their Week 1 showdown, Guyton is slated to face off against Myles Garrett, a three time All-Pro and reining NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Garrett, 6-foot-4, 272-pounds, is the league’s preeminent pass rusher. According to Pro Football Focus Garrett rushed 666 snaps from the right side (facing the LT) compared to just 121 from the left (facing the RT). That puts the rookie Guyton right in his cross hairs.

This situation is something many in Dallas circled with fear on their calendars after the Cowboys first selected Guyton with the 29th pick in the draft. Seen as an unpolished developmental player, the idea of Guyton facing Garrett sent chills up the collective spine of Cowboys Nation. It was so frightening of a thought, many, including the team themselves, penciled journeyman Chuma Edoga in as the starting LT for Week 1.

After working with renowned offensive line guru Duke Manyweather in the spring, Guyton came to training camp humming. His work ethic and ability to quickly digest and implement technical skills was something the scouting reports clearly missed. Guyton progressed at a rapid rate in Oxnard, not just looking like the LT of the future but also the LT of the present. An unfortunate injury to Edoga facilitated the move to the starting lineup and now Guyton gets ready to put his newly acquired skills to the ultimate test.

Garrett isn’t the only tough draw on Guyton’s schedule. There’s a three week stretch in October where Guyton faces T.J. Watt, Aiden Hutchinson and Nick Bosa in consecutive weeks. It’s murder’s row of pass rushers on the docket but if Guyton can hold up against Garrett in Week 1, logic says he should be able to handle the others down the road.

It’s likely the Cowboys will send help in Guyton’s direction from time to time. Terence Steele has been said to have had a solid summer. If he can hold his own at RT, the Cowboys can roll protections Guyton’s way against Garrett. There’s no shame in getting help against Garrett and frankly the survival of the offense may depend on it.

Even if Guyton struggles on Sunday there’s nowhere to go but up in his development. He started the process extremely raw but possess an elite skillset that indicates the sky is the limit for the young tackle. His work-ethic and learning curve also indicate he’s a pretty safe bet to make it as a prospect this season.

They say you play the cards you’re delt and Guyton got delt a pretty tough hand with Garrett in Week 1, but the rookie appears up to the challenge and Cowboys success in 2024 may depend on it.

Former Browns teammate raves about Myles Garrett on national TV

A former teammate of Garrett’s passes on rave reviews of the NFL’s DPOY

Seven-year NFL veteran and one-time Cleveland Brown defensive end Isaac Rochell had the utmost praise for his former teammate, team captain, and star pass rusher Myles Garrett.

Appearing on “Good Morning Football,” Rochell had glowing reviews of what it was like to get a close-up look at the superstar pass rusher every day in practice during his time in Cleveland:

“Myles beat all of us at birth. He was day one ahead of all of us and I think there’s not really anything else that needs to be explained. He is so genetically ahead of everybody. He’s such a good player. But he’s also such a technician… He really gets to the quarterback as fast and as efficiently as possible. I have nothing but great things to say about him.”

Garrett has displayed freak abilities since his NFL debut and put it all together throughout his NFL Defensive Player of the Year-winning season in 2023.

From strip-sacks to blocking field goals by hurdling the offensive line, Garrett’s combination of elite athleticism and high IQ have allowed him to become one of the league’s most prominent game wreckers over the last seven years.

Myles Garrett hosts 3rd annual Back-To-School Kickoff event

The reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year is giving back to the community

This Sunday afternoon, Cleveland Browns star defensive end Myles Garrett hosted his third annual Back-To-School Kickoff event. The event helps local families prepare for the school year with the collection and donation of school supplies. After having the event in Cleveland Browns Stadium in 2023, Myles had the privilege to host the third year of his event at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

Fellow defensive lineman Maurice Hurst II supported Garrett this afternoon in handing out backpacks to the students. After the students and their families received the school items, they were invited into CMNH for a Q&A with Garrett.

It is no secret that Garrett has always been a fan of natural history, especially the interest in paleontology. This was a fun way for Garrett to express his love for the community, its fans, and his interests. This is an event that Garrett has been very proud to host lately, and will most likely look to continue in future summers.

Myles Garrett hilariously mimics Isaiah Thomas’s sack celebration

Garrett had to get in on the celebration

Cleveland Browns defensive end Isaiah Thomas’s strong start to the preseason has continued. After a great game against the Packers last week, Thomas came up with an early sack of quarterback Nick Mullens to force a Vikings punt.

After the sack, reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett couldn’t help himself and had to mimic Thomas’s celebration on the sideline. Thomas kind of became the forgotten man on the practice squad last year, but if he keeps playing the way he is right now, he will make someone’s 53-man roster.

It’s a crowded room in Cleveland with Garrett, Za’Darius Smith, and others, so Thomas might not be able to stay with the Browns.

The Browns will continue the preseason next week in Seattle, and quarterback Deshaun Watson is expected to play for the first time. It’s hard to assess how the offense is doing in the preseason, but getting him back out there and getting live reps before they play Dallas will help him a ton.

Vikings’ star offensive tackle heaps praise on the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year

“I haven’t gone against nothing like that before.”

The Minnesota Vikings and Cleveland Browns underwent two days of joint practices before their preseason game on Saturday that left their star left tackle Christian Darrisaw in complete awe of defensive end Myles Garrett.

In most cases, these joint practices are a far better indication than the preseason game the Browns and Vikings will play on Saturday afternoon. The starters will likely sit during the actual games, but it was all iron sharpening iron between the first teams over the last two days.

This included Darrisaw getting a healthy dose of Garrett. Here is what Darrisaw, an obvious Pro Bowl snub from a year ago, had to say about the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year:

“He’s special. Special. One-of-one. I haven’t gone against nothing like that before. The things that he’s capable of doing… He uses all his tools in his bag.”

The Browns are hoping that rookie first rounder Tyler Guyton feels the same way when the Dallas Cowboys come to Cleveland when Week 1 rolls around. The rookie better be ready for a baptism by fire.

Texas A&M Edge Nic Scourton describes meeting Myles Garrett and Von Miller

Nic Scourton is looking to emulate Myles Garrett and Von Miller this seaosn

During the second week of Texas A&M’s fall practice period, three players, including former Purdue Edge Nic Scourton, took the podium to take questions from the local Aggie media to not only discuss the progress made by A&M’s loaded defensive line but also talk about his recent meeting A&M pass rush legends Myles Garrett and Von Miller.

While Scourton, a native of Bryan, Texas, may only spend one full season with the program after leading the Big Ten in sacks (10) during his final season at Purdue, who is better to emulate this coming season than two of the top sack artists to ever grace Kyle Field?

Speaking with reporters, Scourton noted that he was starstruck after a photo emerged in late July of the junior standing with Garrett and Miller after what looked like a workout, providing insight on how things went while looking toward Texas A&M’s 2024 season opener vs. Notre Dame:

“I was surreal,” Scourton stated. “Just me, it’s like imagining me and Superman, him being ten times cooler than you ever thought he was. Myles is a quiet guy, very expressive, and very funny. It was a blessing that I made those connections. It was really nice.”

Cool, calm, and collected, Scourton plays with his hair on fire once the ball is snapped, just like Garrett and Miller have played during their college and NFL careers, as Mike Elko and his staff are looking for a productive pass rusher to eclipse his sack and tackle for loss numbers alongside fellow pass rushers Shemar Stewart, Shemar Turner, and Cashius Howell.

Browns DE Myles Garrett knows defense has room for improvement

The defense still has room for improvement

Last year, the Cleveland Browns had one of the best defenses in the NFL. Under first-year defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, the group was disruptive and, at times, lock down in the back end.

But reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett knows there are still areas for improvement for the group in 2024. While appearing on NFL Network this week, Garrett highlighted the team’s struggles in the red zone and how they often looked like a different group on the road compared to at home.

Other players and Jim Schwartz have also highlighted these things this offseason. Schwartz has talked about not being so predictable and adding change-ups to their arsenal to give offenses different looks and confuse them.

Garrett knows the group cannot rest on their reputation from last year and how none of that matters regarding the 2024 season; I expect the group to be just as good, if not better, this year.

BIlls’ Greg Rousseau named ‘player who could breakout in 2024’

#BIlls’ Greg Rousseau named ‘player who could breakout in 2024’

Buffalo Bills defensive end Greg Rousseau has been solid during his tenure in Buffalo. In four years, he has consistently improved and entrenched himself as an integral part of the Bills defensive line.

Last season, Rousseau led the Bills defensive ends in snap percentage, seeing 54.6 percent of the snaps.

The Bills moved on from Leonard Floyd, who led Buffalo with 10.5 sacks last year. In addition, Von Miller is coming off his worst season as a pro, registering only three tackles and no sacks.

Thus, Rousseau will have greater responsibility as he enters his fourth professional season. The Miami product should have more opportunities to play in a variety of situations for Buffalo’s defense in the fall.

With this in mind, the 33rd Team’ sees Rousseau as a defensive player who could break out in the 2024 season.

The analysis highlights that even though Rousseau’s sack total dropped during the past two campaigns, the end has shown improvements in other aspects of his game:

Rousseau was a much better player in 2023 as he created more pressures (68) and improved significantly as a run defender. During the 2022 season, Rousseau was just an average run defender who teams would run toward when possible. But in 2023, he became an above-average run player, finishing the season with 19 stops. His improvement as a run defender has been a steady one despite it being a weakness coming out of college. Now, he is an every-down player who can thrive in any situation.

In addition, Rousseau was on par with some of the league’s best in different metrics. Rousseau’s pass-win rate was 16.0 percent last year, just behind Pittsburgh’s superstar TJ Watt (16.9 percent). Rousseau was slightly ahead of Danielle Hunter (15.7 percent) and Maxx Crosby (15.5) percent. Mosher posits that if Rousseau can improve this number, a double-digit sack season may be on the horizon.

Rousseau enters the season as Buffalo’s No. 1 defensive end. He has a great deal of experience on the field, taking starting snaps early in his career. The 33rd Team sees things turning out well for Rousseau’s development this year:

Rousseau just turned 24 and already has three seasons under his belt with nearly 2,000 snaps played. But going into Year 4, the expectations are even higher. The Bills need Rousseau to be a star on the edge and be a consistent pass rusher in big games. And given his trajectory, it’s not hard to believe that it will happen given his rapid improvement.

Rousseau has started all 46 games he has played in a Buffalo uniform. Over three seasons, he has recorded 129 total tackles, 42 quarterback hits, 17 sacks, three forced fumbles, and an interception.

Steelers EDGE T.J. Watt lands at No. 14 of PFF Top 50 rankings

T.J. Watt wasn’t ranked as high as many Steelers fans would have hoped for.

If you ask any Pittsburgh Steelers fan, they will tell you there is no defensive player in the NFL better than Steelers EDGE T.J. Watt. Watt has one Defensive Player of the Year award under his belt and holds the single-season sack record with Michael Strahan.

But unfortunately, the NFL is absolutely loaded with defensive stars, especially edge defenders so when it comes to comparing them, it can be a little subjective.

Pro Football Focus did their ranking of the 50 best players and for their ranking leaned on their grading system as something of a level playing field.

For Watt, this means he landed at No. 14 and was the seventh-ranked defensive player on the list. Here’s what they had to say about Watt:

Some players generate more pressure than T.J. Watt or beat their blocker with greater frequency, but nobody has a better knack for making a big play at the right time. Watt led the league in sacks despite ranking 25th in pass-rush win rate, and we have enough evidence by now to see it is a repeatable skill. On top of the sacks, Watt also notched four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, an interception and a defensive touchdown. There may not be a better playmaker on the defensive side of the ball.

Cleveland Browns edge defender Myles Garrett was the top defensive player and No. 2 ranked player on the list. This will be much to the chagrin of Steelers fans.
