Bobby Wagner will not play in Pro Bowl with knee injury

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner will not play in the Pro Bowl thanks to a knee injury, but it will not require surgery.

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner will not play in the Pro Bowl in order to rest his ailing knee, coach Pete Carroll confirmed on Tuesday in an interview with the NFL Network.

“He had something really he didn’t even know he had, found it in the exit interviews that he has a little problem with his knee,” Carroll said. “He’s just going to rest up. He doesn’t have to do anything for it but he needs to miss this game.”

So while Wagner won’t participate on Sunday, it does not sound like the recently discovered injury will require surgery, or that it has any chance of impacting his availability for next season.

Wagner was one of two Seahawks originally selected for the Pro Bowl roster, alongside quarterback Russell Wilson. It was announced on Tuesday that cornerback Shaquill Griffin was added to the roster as a replacement for Saints defensive back Marshon Lattimore.

Seattle’s coaching staff will head up the NFC squad, who will now add Eric Kendricks – the younger brother of Seattle’s own Mychal Kendricks – onto the roster as a replacement for Wagner.

The game will kick off at 12:00 p.m. PT. on Sunday, January 26 in Orlando, Florida.

A look at the 19 Seattle Seahawks who are unrestricted free agents

The Seattle Seahawks head into the offseason with 19 unrestricted free agents, including two big ones in Jadeveon Clowney and Jarran Reed.

The Seattle Seahawks will now turn their attention toward free agency and the NFL Draft following a heartbreaking exit in the NFC Divisional round, 28-23, to the Green Bay Packers.

The free agency period begins on March 18, and 19 Seahawks are set to become unrestricted free agents in what will once again be a busy offseason for John Schneider, Pete Carroll and company.

The Seahawks have $58.3 million in cap space, the seventh most in the league, and while a lot of that could go toward trying to bring back two big pieces of the defensive line – Jadeveon Clowney and Jarran Reed – it does give the Seahawks plenty of room to maneuver as they look to take another step forward and contend for a Super Bowl in 2020.

Here is a look at the 19 unrestricted free agents Seattle has heading into free agency. Eight of them were starters or key contributors, including six on defense and two on the offensive line.

3 linebackers the Redskins should target in 2020 NFL free agency

The Redskins have the makings of a stout defense in 2020, but a high-end linebacker could be exactly what they need to be elite.

The defense for the 2020 Washington Redskins is starting to shape up pretty nicely, and with a duo of highly-respected defensive coaches now in the door, there’s a chance for them to be pretty good this upcoming season.

Not only does the defensive line have a solid foundation, with the prospect of bringing in Chase Young — the best defensive end that college football has seen in years — but the secondary is young and talented, with a budding Quinton Dunbar and a promising group underneath him.

That leaves the middle of the defense to focus on. While the Redskins were forced to piece together a linebacking core in 2019 after Reuben Foster went down with a season-ending injury in OTAs, they look to be a little bit more sound at the position as they enter the offseason. Foster is set to return, and rookie linebacker Cole Holcomb had a stellar first season, where he presented himself as a solid piece in the middle of the Washington defense. Still, that leaves one spot for the Redskins to try and improve to allow their defense to take shape, and it’s highly possible that they take to the free-agent market in order to do so. Here are a few players that we think they should try to bring into Ashburn.

Kendricks has had a solid career in the NFL, and his nose for the football inside the box makes him a valuable addition to run-stopping efforts. In his past two seasons with the Seahawks, he has stepped up as a valuable playmaker at inside linebacker, with 90 total tackles and 12 tackles for loss. He also has shown a little bit of ability to get out into coverage, defending five passes with one interception in Seattle, to go along with his three interceptions during his six years with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kendricks is coming off of back-to-back one-year contracts in Seattle, the last of which was worth $4 million. 2019 was an average season for the 8-year veteran; he improved on a disappointing 2018, but it could be considered a down year compared to the numbers that he used to put up in Philadelphia. The Redskins could likely sign him to a short, two- or three-year deal that is easy on the salary cap, and allow him to help grow a young and promising defense. His stats don’t exactly line up with his name recognition, but this signing would surely get Redskins fans jazzed about the upcoming season.

Seahawks place linebacker Mychal Kendricks on injured reserve

The Seattle Seahawks placed linebacker Mychal Kendricks on the injured reserve, promoting tackle Chad Wheeler from the practice squad.

The Seattle Seahawks officially placed linebacker Mychal Kendricks (knee) on the injured reserve, ending his 2019 season.

Seattle used the roster spot to promote tackle Chad Wheeler off the practice squad, adding depth on the offensive line.

“Today, just happened,” Carroll confirmed to media members on Wednesday when asked about Kendricks and the injured reserve. “You’re gonna see Chad Wheeler’s gonna come up.”

Kendricks started 14 games for the Seahawks in 2019, recording 71 combined tackles, four passes defended, three sacks and one interception, lining up as the team’s SAM linebacker.

However, a torn ACL suffered in Seattle’s regular season finale against the 49ers forced the team to turn to rookie Cody Barton, who started his third career NFL game on Sunday against the Eagles and recorded five combined tackles, one sack and two passes defended.

Barton will be counted on again on Sunday against Green Bay, although the Packers reliance on Davante Adams out of the slot could push Seattle into more nickel packages.

Wheeler has been a member of Seattle’s practice squad for most of the year. The tackle has appeared in 27 NFL games, making 19 starts, all with the New York Giants.

His experience as a starter and familiarity with coach Mike Solari should allow him to step in and contribute right away, making him an important depth option.

Seattle could be without both Duane Brown and Mike Iupati again on Sunday, which pushes both Jamarco Jones and George Fant into starting roles and leaves the team with just Wheeler as depth at either tackle spot.

Seahawks LB Mychal Kendricks has torn ACL, out for postseason

There was speculation that Seattle Seahawks linebacker Mychal Kendricks tore his ACL in Week 17 against the 49ers, and now it is confirmed.

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Mychal Kendricks suffered an injury in the team’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers and there was speculation that he tore his ACL. Unfortunately, those suspicions were confirmed and Kendricks is now out for the playoffs.

“Mychal looks like he’s going to need surgery, so he’s going to be out for a while,” coach Pete Carroll told reporters Monday afternoon. “I know reports came out before he even had his MRI. I don’t know how they did that, but they were pretty accurate. He’s got an ACL injury that he’s going to have to deal with.”

This is yet another blow to the Seahawk’s postseason ambitions as they have lost several key players to injury throughout the year. Kendricks recorded 69 tackles, three sacks, an interception, and a forced fumble. He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

As the No. 5 seed, the Seahawks will play the No. 4-seeded Philadelphia Eagles in the wild card round of the postseason. Seattle has a 7-1 record on the road this year, the best in franchise history. The Seahawks have also beaten Philadelphia in one of those games. However, the playoffs are an entirely different beast from the regular season and the Seahawks must be prepared.

Seahawks FS Quandre Diggs expected to suit up against Eagles

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is being told by his training staff that free safety Quandre Diggs should be ready to go on Sunday.

The Seattle Seahawks got some good news on Monday morning, with coach Pete Carroll indicating on 710 ESPN’s Pete Carroll show that free safety Quandre Diggs (ankle) is expected to play on Sunday against the Eagles in Philadelphia, at least according to the team’s training staff.

“They’re telling me now today that he’s going to be ready to go this week,” Carroll said. “I’m being told by the trainers already that they think he can go. So we’ll see. He still has to make it through the week.”

Diggs missed the final two regular season games with a high-ankle sprain, but early reports indicate he will be able to suit up in the team’s wild card battle with the NFC East champion Eagles.

Diggs has been an absolutely critical part of this team’s success on the defensive side of the ball. In just five games, he recorded three interceptions, one touchdown, one forced fumble and 21 combined tackles.

His rangey, hard-hitting style of play perfectly encapsulates what coach Carroll looks for in his free safeties, and his absence has been felt the past two weeks.

Diggs’ return would help mitigate the likely loss of linebacker Mychal Kendricks, who the team fears may have torn his ACL on Sunday against San Francisco.

Diggs will first have to make it through a week of practice, but it looks like the five-year veteran will make his return to the team, and will appear in his first career playoff game, on Sunday.

Seahawks linebacker Mychal Kendricks feared to have torn ACL

The Seattle Seahawks fear linebacker Mychal Kendricks tore his ACL on Sunday, which would keep him out of Sunday’s wildcard game.

The injury bug continues for the Seattle Seahawks, who may have lost SAM linebacker Mychal Kendricks to a torn ACL, according to a tweet from NFL Insider Ian Rapoport.

Kendricks left Sunday night’s game against the 49ers in the third quarter, limping off the field. He did not return.

“We did not get test results back from him yet, but he did sprain his knee,” Carroll said on 710 ESPN’s Pete Carroll show on Monday morning. “We’ll have to find out. We don’t know the extent of it yet.”

Kendricks already missed two games this season with a hamstring injury, but has been a key part of the defense when healthy. In 14 games this year, all starts, Kendricks recorded 71 combined tackles, three sacks, four passes defended and one interception.

Kendricks would be replaced by rookie Cody Barton, who filled in for him after he departed. The absence of Kendricks would certainly be felt on Sunday against the Eagles in Philadelphia, where Seattle will look to improve on a 3-12 record in road playoff games.

Seahawks still saddled by injuries to defensive starters

The Seattle Seahawks lost two running backs Week 16, but it’s been the defensive side of the ball that has been most impacted by injuries.

The Seattle Seahawks were dealt a number of hard blows in their Week-16 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, including potential season-ending injuries to running backs, Chris Carson and C.J. Prosise.

But until Sunday, it was mostly the defensive side of the ball with the most health concerns. Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney was inactive for his second-straight game with core troubles and cornerback Shaquill Griffin has been sidelined in as many matchups with a hamstring injury.

“Both those guys were not right, they couldn’t make it back,” coach Pete Carroll said after the loss. “They both tried, and they weren’t right and they couldn’t pass the tests with the trainers. So, it wasn’t even a tough call when we got down to it. We held out hope that maybe they could turn a corner, but neither one of them did.”

Clowney and Griffin aren’t the only defenders battling injuries, Quandre Digss is still out with a high-ankle sprain and linebacker Mychal Kendricks and defensive end Ziggy Ansah only finally returned to the action Sunday afternoon.

“It’s interesting that a few of our guys – sometimes earlier in the season you get to the end of the week and they can make it back,” Carroll continued. “Here, these guys didn’t in this case. So, we’ll just see how that goes next week.”

Carroll did say that both Griffin and Kendricks would return to practice on Tuesday.

The Seahawks will need every healthy available player when they face off against the 49ers for the division crown Week 17.

Pete Carroll updates Seahawks injury situations ahead of Week 17

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll provided a litany of injury updates ahead of the team’s Week 17 matchup with the San Francisco 49ers.

The Seattle Seahawks head into Christmas with a brand new backfield, although the two new names aren’t exactly unfamiliar ones.

Still, Seattle has a lot of work to do to get Marshawn Lynch and Robert Turbin up to speed before they take on the 49ers on Sunday night.

Fortunately, it sounds like many of Seattle’s other starters are on their way back to the field, which should help shore things up, in particular on the defensive side of things.

Carroll confirmed that both Jadeveon Clowney and Shaquill Griffin practiced on Tuesday, and their status looks very promising for Sunday. That gives Seattle two huge components of their defense back after they missed Sunday’s dud against the Cardinals.

Carroll was much less confident about safety Quandre Diggs.

“It’s going to be slow early in the week,” Carroll said on Wednesday. We’re going to take it all the way until the end of the week and see how he responds. . . It’s going to be slow. It’s going to be later in the week before we know anything about him.”

Carroll had similar thoughts about SAM linebacker Mychal Kendricks, who did play on Sunday but has been nursing a hamstring injury for the past few weeks.

“He made it through,” Carroll said. “He’s a little sore from the work. I won’t know how he’s doing until later in the week.”

Lastly, Carroll provided an update on the left side of the offensive line, starting with guard Mike Iupati.

“Mike is practicing today,” Carroll said. “Seems to be alright.”

Carroll reported the minor surgery Duane Brown had went well, but that they won’t know much about his status until later in the week.

“No surprises, but a very necessary clean up that was needed,” Carroll continued. “He’s just a couple days out. He just got back here today, I think. We don’t know a whole lot. Everything was reported to be exactly like they had anticipated and there were no surprises.”

The Seahawks won’t practice on Wednesday, but an estimated practice report will come out in the afternoon and will give fans an idea of how close many key pieces to the team are to playing on Sunday in a battle for supremacy in the NFC West.
