Three things to watch as the Boston Celtics face the Toronto Raptors in Montreal

The Boston Celtics and the Toronto Raptors are set to play an exhibition contest at the Bell Centre arena in Montreal today.

The Boston Celtics and the Toronto Raptors are set to play an exhibition contest at the Bell Centre arena in Montreal as part of the league’s “NBA Canada” slate of games. It will also be the Celtics’ final preseason tilt. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Eastern.

To cover that last friendly, host of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” podcast Bobby Manning put together a preview of what fans ought to be watching for in what’s typically more of a dress rehearsal for the regular-season opener than the prior preseason contests that Boston has played thus far.

Per Manning, fans should watch to see whether combo guard Derrick White will continue to start for the Celtics, what players are part of the team’s bench unit and what kind of defense Boston will play.

Michigan State Soccer: Giuseppe Barone drafted in Third round of MLS draft to Montreal

Michigan State Men’s Soccer standout Giuseppe Barone was drafted in the third round of the MLS draft to Montreal.

[jwplayer mKgJ519R-PROpJzTY]

Michigan State Men’s Soccer has quietly become quite the development system for MLS players, and that trend will continue this year as MSU midfielder Guiseppe Barone was drafted today in the Third Round of the 2021 MLS draft to Montreal (Club de Football Montreal) with the No. 63 overall pick.

Barone (who is also related to my former high school Spanish teacher, coincidentally) was one of 11 Big Ten players taken in the 2021 draft and he extends MSU’s MLS draft streak to four-straight seasons with a drafted player.

“First off, I am really happy for Giuseppe and his family. He has put in a lot of work and has had a great career at Michigan State,” MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. “Certainly, it was a little difficult at the end with injuries, that is probably why he dropped a little bit, but I think that Montréal is getting a steal. Giuseppe’s upside is huge; when healthy, he is definitely an MLS caliber player.”

Prediction

Montreal 2, New England 2

Moneyline (ML)

Montreal (+250) edged New England (+100) by a 2-1 count Feb. 29 before the pause button was pressed due to the COVID-19 global pandemic situation. Now, they’ll square off in the bubble in Orlando. The difference here is that the Revolution will have a full cadre of DPs with F Gustavo Bou, F Adam Buksa and MF Carles Gil available for the first time. That will tip the scales more in their favor in a match which should see plenty of action. TIE (+275) IS THE BEST BET. Also, if this match were to end up 2-2, betting that for the “Correct Score” returns a healthy +1150.

A winning $10 wager on Montreal and New England settling for a draw nets a profit of $27.50. A $10 wager on the Correct Score ending up 2-2 nets a profit of $111.50 – basically, every $1 wager that wins will profit $11.50.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 3.5 (+150) could be quite the value here. The Impact were averaging 2.0 goals per match before the pause, while allowing 1.5 goals per match. The Revs netted two total goals while also allowing 1.5 goals per match. While I expect some clubs to start slow in the bubble, these sides are relatively healthy and could get off to a quick start. Over 2.5 (-162) is a safer play, and will cost you a lot more juice, but should be a slam-dunk play as well.

Jean Pascal, frustrated but compliant, in quarantine instead of gym

Jean Pascal had planned to be training in Miami for a rematch with Badou Jack but instead is in quarantine in Canada.

Jean Pascal planned to be in the gym. Instead, he went into quarantine.

In another example of a world paralyzed by a pandemic, Pascal went to Miami to begin training for a possible rematch with Badou Jack. He wanted to be ready. He planned on getting an early start. But coronavirus did to Pascal what it has been doing to everyone else. It put plans on hold.

Pascal arrived in Miami just as the threat began to force border closures. Pascal, who had hoped to train in south Florida for two weeks before moving into a camp in Puerto Rico, decided to go home to Quebec.

Instead of two weeks of training, he got two weeks of quarantine.

“They closed the borders,’’ Pascal told The Montreal Journal. “So I decided to come home wisely.”

Two weeks of quarantine is the Canadian recommendation for returning citizens. Pascal complied.

“I’m in quarantine, but my daughter Angel is not with me,’’ he said. “She will stay with my aunt for the duration of my confinement.”

Still, Pascal is frustrated.

“It is a waste of money because we paid for plane tickets, hotel rooms and food,’’ he said. “It’s a shame to come home and start from scratch. In a case where there is a cancellation due to an injury, we already have another fixed date. Because of this virus, we have no idea what will happen next. I don’t know if I’m going to go back to the ring in June, July or fall.’’

Pascal (35-6-1, 20 KOs) won a split decision over Jack (22-3-3, 13 KOs) for a light heavyweight title on Dec. 28 in Atlanta. It was controversial. A rematch looked inevitable.

“I did not yet have a fixed date for my next fight,” Pascal said. “However, I knew I was going to get back in the ring before the start of the summer.’’

Now, Pascal will wait.

“When I have a date, I am able to align my mind according to that,’’ he said. “Since it’s all in the air, it’s hard to keep motivated for training. It is especially hard to stay motivated in the chaos we are experiencing at the moment. I would find myself a little selfish to be so hungry, given that people are dying and many others are sick.”

Artur Beterbiev, like many boxers, feeling financial pinch from hiatus

Artur Beterbiev is feeling the adverse effects of the coronavirus after his March 28 fight against Fanlong Meng was canceled.

Artur Beterbiev took it in stride when he received word that his March 28 light heavyweight defense against Fanlong Meng in Quebec City had been canceled because of the coronavirus. He simply continued his workouts, says head trainer Marc Ramsay.

Make no mistake, though: Beterbiev’s wallet took a hit.

Fighters everywhere today are feeling the financial sting these days, especially those who had fights lined up this spring, as Beterbiev did, only to see them postponed or cancelled outright as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ramsay estimates that Beterbiev is out anywhere from $35,000- $52,000 ($50,000 to $75,000 in Canadian dollars) in training camp expenses. It’s money he won’t recover for the time being. Maybe not for a long time.

“It’s a true catastrophe,” Ramsay told the The Journal of Montreal. “In addition to not receiving his purse, Artur is going to absorb all the costs for his training camp.

“It’s a camp that had big expenses in terms of the salary for the six-man team, their allowances, flight tickets and housing.”

A possible silver lining is that promoter Top Rank is seriously looking at the option to stage Beterbiev-Meng in a closed studio shut off from the public. That would mean the card would take place in the U.S., which could be especially problematic for Ramsay, Beterbeiv, but also Ramsay’s other client Oscar Rivas, the Colombian heavyweight contender who was scheduled to appear on the undercard.

The U.S. and Canada recently agreed to close their borders to non-essential traffic.

“Oscar is in Canada on a renewable work permit. If he has to go to the U.S. for a fight, he wouldn’t be able to return to [Canada] but would have to go back to [his home in] Colombia,” Ramsay told The Journal. “For me and Artur, we would have to be quarantined upon our return. In short, we’d be taking a step backwards.”

Ramsay himself is feeling the adverse effects of the coronavirus on his own business. With the exception of Beterbiev and Rivas, Ramsay has closed off his Montreal gym to his regular clientele and has asked his amateur and professional boxers to stay home. Ramsay is trying to think of creative ways to maintain his stable, but with a public health crisis restricting so many aspects of daily life, good ideas are hard to come by.

“We could maybe do our training camp outside, but even that isn’t optimal,” Ramsay said. “In my opinion, we’re far from doing that. We’ll make plans as soon as we get some precise dates.”

Golden Boy signs heavy-handed heavyweight Arslanbek Makhmudov

Golden Boy and Eye of the Tiger Management will co-promote the Montreal-based Russian heavyweight Arslanbek Makhmudov.

Golden Boy apparently wants in on the heavyweight game.

The company announced Monday it signed Arslanbek Makhmudov, a Montreal-based undefeated Russian heavyweight prospect known for his ferocious power, to a multi-year co-promotional deal with the fighter’s Canadian handler Eye of the Tiger Management.

And the timing couldn’t be better, according to Golden Boy CEO Oscar De La Hoya.

“In recent years, we have had somewhat of a renaissance in the heavyweight division,” said De La Hoya, referring to the likes of Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua. “The big fights, heated rivalries and constant media exposure that the heavyweights are getting these days is very good for the health of the sport.

“By signing fighters such as Arslan Makhmudov, we are doing our part in continuing this momentum into the future.”

Makhmudov (10-0, 10 KOs) is the fifth fighter from Eye of the Tiger Management to enter into a co-promotional arrangement with Golden Boy. The others include David Lemieux, Yves Ulysses, Erik Bazinyan and Steven Butler.

“I’m confident that with my team. … I will reach my goal of becoming heavyweight champion of the world,” said Makhmudov, 30.

Said Camille Estephan, president of Eye of the Tiger Management: “I’m thrilled to bring the top heavyweight prospect in the world to the U.S. with Golden Boy Promotions. We plan to send a message to the heavyweight division with his performances…I believe we will have a heavyweight champion of the world together.”

The deal means Makhmudov will appear on the streaming service DAZN, the network with which Golden Boy has an output deal and where there is an abundance of heavyweight talent. Heavyweights aligned with DAZN includes Joshua, Oleksandr Usyk, Michael Hunter, Filip Hrgovic, Dillian Whyte and Derek Chisora.

Makhmudov is trained by Marc Ramsay, who also works with current light heavyweight titleholder Artur Beterbiev, Eleider Alvarez, Oscar Rivas and Lemieux.
