Buck: Lining up with players like Mainoo is why I picked England

Noel Buck has said the chance to play alongside the likes of Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo is why he’s committed his international future to England.

The New England Revolution midfielder has been involved with the U.S. at the youth level, but accepted a call-up from England’s U-19 side last fall and has made eight appearances for the Young Lions.

Buck is now provisionally cap-tied to England, meaning he would now need to file a one-time change of association to play for another country.

In an interview with The Athletic, Buck said that England made a strong push for him and that he’s happy with where he is for the time being.

“I’m in a good spot with England now, we’ll see what the future holds,” he said.

Buck was born and raised in the U.S. but is eligible for England and Wales through his father. The 19-year-old said that the quality of players at England’s disposal is one of the main reasons he’s cast his lot with the Three Lions for now.

“Each time I go with England, I learn a couple of new things, meet new people and get better experiences,” Buck said. “They’re all fantastic players — especially Kobbie. The fact he’s playing right now for England (seniors) is unreal to think about.

“It’s why I wanted to play for England: you get to play with these types of players and I’ll include (Leeds United’s) Archie Gray in that, fantastic player, and Jack Hinshelwood at Brighton. Quality.

“What Kobbie’s success does is also highlight the pathway and how quickly things can change.”

Mainoo, 18, has enjoyed a breakthrough season with Manchester United that has seen him go from starting alongside Buck with England’s U-19s to making his senior debut last month.

Buck isn’t shy about his desire to one day play in the same league as Mainoo, but added that his focus for now is on the Revs.

“I’ve always wanted to go and play in England,” Buck said. “That’s always been a dream — whether it’s in the Premier League or the Championship — but at the moment I’m focused on my football here.”

The New England Revolution don’t just have a mountain to climb on Tuesday at Club América, they have to scale Mount Everest.

América destroyed the Revs 4-0 in the first leg of their Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinal last week, taking an almost insurmountable lead back home to the Estadio Azteca.

It may just be a matter of damage control in the second leg for Revs coach Caleb Porter, who has indicated he may rotate his squad with almost no hope of progression.

That will suit América manager André Jardine just fine, as his side is in the middle of another Liga MX title pursuit. Las Aguilas are level on points with Toluca atop the table after a 1-1 draw with Santos Laguna over the weekend.

With a match against Toluca coming up at the weekend, Jardine likely will jump at the chance to rotate his squad as well.

The winner of this tie will face the winner of Pachua vs. Herediano in the semifinal. With Pachuca winning its first leg 5-0 in Costa Rica, an all-Liga MX semifinal looks inevitable.

Caleb Porter guarantees last-place Revs will beat Charlotte FC

This one could really backfire on the Revs coach

The pressure is already growing on Caleb Porter just a couple months into his tenure as New England Revolution head coach.

Now, Porter has taken a step that will undoubtedly ratchet that pressure up even more.

In an appearance on a Boston radio station, Porter guaranteed the Revs would defeat Charlotte FC at Gillette Stadium on Saturday.

The promise was notable, given the Revs are currently the worst team in MLS on a points-per-game basis. Porter’s side has one draw and four defeats in five games thus far, with a league-worst goal differential of -7.

New England is also coming off a dismal 4-0 home loss against Club América on Tuesday, essentially ending their Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinal tie after just one leg.

Porter appeared on 98.5 The Sports Hub on Thursday, and closed out his interview by saying: “We’re going to get a win Saturday. I promise that.”

Word of Porter’s guarantee quickly reached Dean Smith, whose Charlotte  side currently sits six places and seven points above the Revs in the table.

“He shouldn’t make promises he might not be able to keep,” the coach fired back.

Whether Porter’s guarantee ends up being suicidal or a brilliant bit of motivation, we have to give the coach credit for turning a nondescript early-season matchup into a game MLS fans will now be closely monitoring.

It’s MLS vs. Liga MX in a high-profile Champions Cup quarterfinal

The New England Revolution will host Club América on Tuesday in the first leg of a Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinal.

The MLS side will enter the tie as the clear underdog against the reigning Liga MX champion, which knocked off Real Estelí and Chivas en route to the last eight.

The Revs have defeated opposition from Panama (Independiente) and Costa Rica (Alajuelense) in the Champions Cup thus far, but the level of opposition will take a major jump in the quarterfinal.

Reports: New England Revolution refuse to train after Arena resignation

The New England Revolution have entered crisis mode.

Two days after Bruce Arena resigned as the Revolution’s head coach and sporting director, the team refused to train under interim head coach Richie Williams.

The Athletic reported the news, with ESPN confirming.

Revolution players are seeking answers around the nature of Arena’s departure, which came after MLS said an investigation into “insensitive and inappropriate remarks” corroborated some elements of the allegations against the legendary head coach.

But the exact nature of Arena’s remarks has not been revealed, and The Athletic reported that Williams himself had filed some of the complaints against Arena.

After a series of meetings with club leadership on Tuesday, Revolution players reportedly felt their questions were not answered to their satisfaction. When quizzed on his involvement in the investigation, Williams declined to answer. As a result, the Revs reportedly refused to participate in training.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Williams confirmed that training had been cancelled but called it a collective decision.

“We didn’t have training today as we had a bunch of meetings between players, coaches and management,” said Williams. “The length of the meetings and what was discussed we decided as a group, collectively, that we wouldn’t have training today and we’d be out tomorrow.”

Ahead of the press conference, a team spokesperson said that Williams would be unable to answer questions about Arena’s resignation, referring media to previous statements by the league, team and Arena himself.

UPDATE: The Revs said later on Tuesday that Clint Peay, head coach of Revolution II, had replaced Williams as interim head coach. The status of Williams was unclear. In addition, assistant coaches Dave van den Bergh and Shalrie Joseph, both of whom had reportedly clashed with Williams, left the club.

Berhalter backs Arena after legendary coach’s resignation

U.S. men’s national team head coach Gregg Berhalter has said Bruce Arena is a “great person” following the New England Revolution manager’s resignation over the weekend.

Amid a MLS investigation into “insensitive and inappropriate remarks,” Arena stepped down on Saturday, admitting in a statement that he “made some mistakes.”

MLS said that its investigation confirmed some elements of the allegations, though it wouldn’t go into further detail.

Berhalter and Arena have a long history, with the latter coaching the former on both the USMNT and LA Galaxy, before Berhalter became an assistant coach under Arena with the Galaxy following his retirement.

With details of what Arena actually said still not available, Berhalter was careful not to opine on the specifics of the situation on Monday, but did offer a backing of Arena as a person.

“I’m not entirely informed with the ins and outs of that whole thing,” Berhalter told reporters ahead of the USMNT’s match against Oman on Tuesday. “What I’d say is that I know Bruce, I know he’s a great person, I know he’s a great coach. I know he’s a very successful coach. He has a strong family. That’s all I can really say about that. I know Bruce has a great character.”

Arena, who coached the USMNT at the 2002 and 2006 World Cup, has the most wins (262) and most MLS Cup titles (five) of any coach in MLS history.

Arena resigns as Revolution head coach amid MLS investigation

The 71-year-old is the winningest coach in MLS history

Bruce Arena has resigned as New England Revolution head coach and sporting director, admitting to “mistakes” amid a league investigation into inappropriate remarks.

Arena, the winningest coach in MLS history and a two-time U.S. men’s national team head coach, will have to petition MLS commissioner Don Garber should he wish to coach in the league again.

On August 1, Arena was placed on administrative leave amid a MLS investigation into allegations of “insensitive and inappropriate remarks.”

Revolution assistant Richie Williams has served as interim head coach in the meantime. Just hours before Arena’s resignation was announced, The Athletic reported that Williams himself had filed some of the complaints against Arena.

The nature of Arena’s remarks has not been revealed, but the league said in a statement that its investigation confirmed some elements of the allegations.

In a statement issued by the Revolution, Arena said: “I know that I have made some mistakes and moving forward, I plan to spend some time reflecting on this situation and taking corrective steps to address what has transpired.

“And while this has not been an easy decision, I am confident that it is in the best interest of both the New England Revolution organization and my family that we part ways at this time.”

Arena, who turns 72 this month, was in the midst of his fifth season in charge of the Revolution. He has won five MLS Cups, two with D.C. United (1996, 1997) and three with the LA Galaxy (2011, 2012, 2014). With 262 victories, he is the winningest coach in MLS history.

Arena has coached the USMNT on two separate occasions. He led the team to the 2002 World Cup quarterfinals, the team’s best finish in the modern era, before coaching the U.S. to a group-stage exit at the 2006 World Cup.

He returned for a second spell in 2016, taking over midway through the team’s ultimately unsuccessful qualifying cycle for the 2018 World Cup.

Buck unloads on U.S. Soccer after accepting England call-up

Noel Buck is not happy with U.S. Soccer, and he’s not afraid to say it.

One day after he accepted a call-up to England’s U-19 squad, the New England Revolution midfielder charged that the American federation hadn’t “given me the time of day.”

Buck is in the midst of a breakout campaign with the Revs, making his international future a pertinent talking point. The 18-year-old was born and raised in the U.S. but is eligible for England and Wales through his father.

Though the midfielder did get a call-up from the U.S. U-19 side in July, he’s been bypassed by the U-20s on multiple occasions, including the World Cup earlier this year.

Buck sent a message prior to Saturday’s game against Austin FC, showing up at Gillette Stadium in a retro England kit. He had plenty more to say after the game, as well.

Asked by the Blazing Musket if he should have gotten more chances with the U.S. at this point, Buck didn’t hold back.

“I feel like they haven’t really given me the time of day to be completely honest,” he said. “And when I get called to an England camp, you know, it’s an honor for me.

“Wearing this [England] shirt isn’t a symbol of like, screw the U.S. because it’s not. They just haven’t given me the time of day and I want to have a good time and really learn something there.”

Earlier in the week, USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter spoke highly of Buck after naming his roster for September friendlies against Uzbekistan and Oman.

“He’s been great. He’s been really strong,” said Berhalter. “I have spoken to him. There has been interest from England, which I think is great. Great achievement, when you have a country like England looking at you.

“I’ve communicated with him, told him that we see him as a player that can compete to make the World Cup team in 2026, based on what he’s doing now.”

Buck acknowledged the conversation with Berhalter, but didn’t feel that communication was sufficient.

“I think besides just talking a bit with Gregg, the U.S. haven’t really talked to me a whole lot,” he said. “You know, there’s been some talks about U-19s a year ago, but other than that, not a whole lot. England have really shown some interest and I’m glad to take it.”

Buck, 18, has been one of the breakout stars of the MLS season, becoming a regular for New England while showing his versatility by playing a variety of midfield positions.

Though born and raised in the U.S., Buck has a UK passport through his father and is therefore eligible for England and Wales.

Buck was called into camp with the U.S. U-19 side in July but was left off the U-20 World Cup roster in May.

After his World Cup snub, Buck said: “It would have been really cool [to make the roster] but I’m happy where I am. If I was going to go and not play, what’s the point really? I’m playing now and I’m getting better and getting a lot of experience here. I’m on a roll, why would I stop?”

Like any great recruiter, the U.S. men’s national team is always on the job.

Noel Buck, the 18-year-old New England Revolution midfielder, was not called up for the USMNT squad set to face Uzbekistan and Oman in September, but the dual national is still very much on head coach Gregg Berhalter’s radar.

Shortly after revealing his first roster since returning to the USMNT job, Berhalter told reporters that he’s been in touch with Buck, who is eligible for the U.S., England, and Wales.

“He’s been great. He’s been really strong,” said Berhalter of the young midfielder. “I have spoken to him. There has been interest from England, which I think is great. Great achievement, when you have a country like England looking at you.

“I’ve communicated with him, told him that we see him as a player that can compete to make the World Cup team in 2026, based on what he’s doing now. We see — if he continues to develop at that rate — I’m sure he can be competitive and compete to be on the roster.”

Buck has previously played for the United States at the Under-19 level, while he has not been called in for any England or Wales youth national team at this point.

U.S. Soccer, based on a recent run of successful recruiting, may feel confident about persuading Buck to stick with the program. Folarin Balogun, Yunus Musah, and Ricardo Pepi are just some of the USMNT regulars who could have chosen another national team, and all have seemed to benefit from going with the U.S. over other options.

Buck having a breakout 2023

Buck has 22 appearances across all competitions for New England, who trail only FC Cincinnati and St. Louis City SC in the race for the Supporters’ Shield.

That number would likely be higher had Buck not missed much of June with an injury. Buck returned to the field for the Revolution in the Leagues Cup, starting all four of New England’s matches in that tournament before going 62 minutes in a 1-0 loss to CF Montréal on Sunday.

Buck has largely played centrally for New England, but with Bruce Arena (who has been on administrative leave for a month) and interim coach Richie Williams toggling between several formations, the youngster has shown some versatility. Buck has been used as a shuttler on the right side of a diamond midfield, as a No. 6, and as a box-to-box option in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Buck has scored two goals and tacked on an assist in 2023, marking himself out as an essential part of the mix at Gillette Stadium regardless of the formation on the day.
