How the Eagles and Steelers stack up for Week 8

With the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers set for an in-state matchup, here’s a statistical breakdown for both teams ahead of Sunday

The Eagles are 6-0 and set to prepare for the Steelers after a much-needed Week 7 bye.

Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts is an MVP candidate among the league leaders in several categories.

Haason Reddick has 4.5 sacks on defense, and the Eagles’ secondary is a top-five group heading into the second half of the season.

For Pittsburgh, the Steelers (2-5) are in last place in the division, and only the Houston Texans (1-4-1) have a worse record among AFC teams.

With both teams set for preparation on Wednesday, here is how they stack up statistically.

A look at the highest-rated recruits in Auburn football history

Here are some of the highest-rated recruits in Auburn football history.

In the past 21 years, Auburn has had 80 players drafted, almost four players a year. Some were ranked as four-stars out of high school like Kerryon Johnson, Carlton Davis, and Braden Smith. Those three are currently playing in the NFL. Others, like [autotag]Montravius Adams[/autotag], [autotag]Carl Lawson[/autotag], and [autotag]Derrick Brown[/autotag] were all regarded as five-stars. Interestingly enough, all six of them have had successful careers in both college and the pros.

On the other hand, several of Auburn’s best players over the past few years were not ranked high at all. Both C.J. Uzomah and Dee Ford were both ranked as three-stars by 247Sports Player Rankings. Those two have had successful careers at both levels as well. However, not all of the top-rated recruits in Auburn history have seen their own share of success. Today, we will look at 247Sports’s list of the highest-rated recruits in Auburn football history based on their composite rankings. Ahead, we take a peek at the top ten highest-ranked recruits in Auburn history.

Former Auburn Defensive Linemen staying put in Pittsburgh

Another former Auburn Tiger inks a new contract in the NFL

Former Tigers defensive linemen, Montravius Adams, re-signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday afternoon.

The Georgia native signed a new deal for two years worth $5 million. The twenty-six-year-old was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 2017. He would then spend four seasons in Green Bay. After that, he bounced around amongst three teams in 2021. Those teams were the New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints, and the Steelers. Now, it appears that he is locked in with the Steelers for at least two more years.

Throughout his NFL career, Adams has recorded 57 tackles. Along with that, he also has 1.5 sacks and 1 forced fumble. The majority of his production came from his time with the Packers. However, he hopes to get back to his old ways in the black and yellow uniforms.

In 2021, Adams started four games for the Steelers. The main reason was due to the fact that the Steelers starting defensive tackles were injured (Stephon Tuitt and Tyson Alualu). With the two likely to be back in time for the start of the season, he will likely be a backup at the defensive tackle position.

Other former Tigers that have signed contracts are Carlton Davis and CJ Uzomah. Davis signed with the Bucaneers on a three-year $45 million dollar deal, while Uzomah signed with the Jets on a three-year $24 million dollar deal. The Steelers certainly hope to see Adams develop into a rotational defensive lineman. Adams is a big presence at the Nose Tackle position and could certainly help the Steelers in the 2022 season.

Steelers poach DT Montravius Adams from Saints practice squad

Steelers poach DT Montravius Adams from Saints practice squad

One New Orleans Saints backup is on the move: defensive tackle Montravius Adams is leaving the practice squad for a spot on the Pittsburgh Steelers active roster, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Adams was one of a couple veteran defensive linemen the Saints picked up during final roster cuts back in August, along with Jaleel Johnson (who returned to the Houston Texans after they had an opening) and Jalyn Holmes (who has remained in New Orleans after injuries decimated their depth chart).

He ultimately appeared in five games for the Saints, totaling 115 snaps on defense with a couple of defensive stops and quarterback pressures. They’ve struggled to find a reliable rotation in the interior behind David Onyemata and Shy Tuttle, with Adams getting into the lineup alongside other backups like Christian Ringo, Malcolm Roach, Josiah Bronson, and Albert Huggins.

So good luck to him in Pittsburgh. Adams’ departure leaves the Saints with Onyemata, Tuttle, Ringo, and Bronson on the active roster with Huggins on the practice squad; Roach is on injured reserve, though he isn’t out for the season like preseason standout Jalen Dalton. A lot of mock drafts and offseason speculation has centered on quarterback and wide receiver as positions of need for the Saints, but defensive tackle shouldn’t be overlooked given the instability there.

The New Orleans Saints are continuing to churn their depth chart at defensive tackle and running back, with veteran players Montravius Adams and Lamar Miller released on Tuesday. Adams will test the waiver wire while Miller was cut from the practice squad.

Adams played 16 snaps in last week’s game with the Tennessee Titans after being inactive a week earlier. He’s been released and re-signed a time or two already this season so it’s possible he returns in some capacity, possibly to the practice squad.

Other defensive tackles under contract right now include David Onyemata, Shy Tuttle, and Malcolm Roach, with Albert Huggins and Josiah Bronson on the practice squad. Of that group only Onyemata and Tuttle have played every game since Onyemata returned from his early-season suspension in Week 7.

As for Miller: he hasn’t played a down for the Saints since signing with their practice squad a few weeks ago despite injuries to Alvin Kamara, Ty Montgomery, and Tony Jones Jr. New Orleans also signed free agent running back Josh Adams to the practice squad recently so they may have felt two reserve players was too many.

Kamara could return to play this week though we won’t know much about his and Montgomery’s status until Wednesday’s injury report is released. Jones is eligible to return from injured reserve whenever he is healthy, but Mark Ingram and Dwayne Washington should continue to hold it down.

More roster moves are expected with veteran kicker Brett Maher signing with the Saints practice squad and a group of receivers trying out on Tuesday. Check back here at Saints Wire for the latest changes.

Bradley Roby officially ends suspension and joins the Saints

The New Orleans Saints formally added CB Bradley Roby to the roster once his suspension ended while re-signing DT Montravius Adams:

The New Orleans Saints filed several roster moves on Monday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire, including a couple of procedural moves now that their Week 1 game with the Green Bay Packers (a statement win, by the way) is in rear view. Get up to speed:

Saints sign former Patriots, Packers DT Montravius Adams

The New Orleans Saints signed former New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Montravius Adams to a free agent contract, ESPN reports:

It was inevitable that the New Orleans Saints would find some help at defensive tackle after rostering just three of them on their initial 53-man lineup. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the first arrival is Montravius Adams — the former Green Bay Packers third-round pick who spent the summer with the New England Patriots.

Adams, 26, weighs in at 6-foot-4 and 304 pounds with a strong Relative Athletic Score at 7.89. He was credited with creating five pressures in the Patriots’ three preseason games (a total that would have ranked second-best among the Saints defensive tackles this preseason, though let’s remember they only played two exhibition games). With that said, Adams has only bagged 11 pressures and a pair of sacks in his 45-game career, per Pro Football Focus, so he won’t exactly be providing much push in the middle.

The Saints needed the help after losing standout defensive tackle David Onyemata to a six-game suspension to start the year. Though NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill reports Albert Huggins returned to their practice squad, the only other interior linemen on their 53-man roster for now are Adams, Malcolm Roach, Christian Ringo, and Shy Tuttle. A corresponding move to open a roster spot for Adams’ addition has not been announced, so keep an eye out.

Report: Patriots sign DE Montravius Adams to one-year deal

New England signed Montravius Adams to a one-year deal on Thursday.

The New England Patriots have been active in free agency, and that continued Thursday afternoon. They signed former Green Bay Packers defensive end Montravius Adams to a one-year deal worth up to $2.5 million.

Adams has recorded 44 tackles in four years of play. In 2020, he recorded 11 tackles on the year. His best year came in 2018, when he recorded 20 combined tackles and a sack and a half.

The move adds depth to a New England defensive line that has gotten a bit of an overhaul in the past couple of days. Adams should be able to provide additional options on the line.

As a busy week continues,  it will be interesting to see what further moves the Patriots make. They have certainly taking an aggressive approach this point in free agency.

Packers lose DL Montravius Adams to New England Patriots

Montravius Adams, the Packers’ third-round pick in 2017, is signing a one-year deal with the Packers.

Montravius Adams will join the long list of players arriving in New England during free agency.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Patriots are signing Adams, a third-round pick of the Packers in 2017, to a one-year deal worth up to $2.5 million.

Adams had an expiring rookie contract after playing four seasons in Green Bay.

The 93rd overall pick in 2017, Adams played in 45 games with the Packers, tallying 44 tackles, 1.5 sacks, four tackles for losses and six quarterback hits. He started only three games.

Adams missed nine games as a rookie with a foot injury and missed eight more in 2020 with another foot injury. The Packers placed him on injured reserve on Nov. 25 of last year.

Overall, the Packers got only 595 total defensive snaps out of their third-round pick. Adams never played more than 212 snaps in a season.

The Patriots likely were impressed with how Adams defended the run during his final season in Green Bay. Before his injury, he was flashing disruptive ability against the run.

Losing Adams further highlights Green Bay’s need to add help along the defensive line entering 2021.

So far, the Packers have lost Adams, Corey Linsley, Jamaal Williams and Tim Boyle in unrestricted free agency.

All-Auburn Defensive Team during Gus Malzahn era

From Derrick Brown to Deshaun Davis to Carlton Davis, Auburn saw a lot of talent at all three levels of defense during the Gus Malzahn era.

Auburn has a historic reputation for putting out great, hard-nosed defensive players and that didn’t change during the Gus Malzahn era.

Derrick Brown and company were monsters in the trenches for the Tigers during the past eight seasons while Deshaun Davis and others controlled the middle of the field. When a team tried to pass on Auburn, defensive backs such as Carlton Davis and Daniel Thomas were there to shut the air game down.

Yet who was the best of the best during Malzahn’s eight-year span for the Tigers on defense under coordinators Ellis Johnson and Kevin Steele? We name our All-Auburn Defensive Team during the Malzahn era along with a second string for each position.

*We decided upon a 4-3 scheme for this team as Auburn has had so much talent upfront to leave anyone off.
