Eagles to sign TE C.J. Uzomah to a 1-year deal

The Philadelphia Eagles are signing veteran tight end C.J. Uzomah to a one-year deal

The Eagles are adding more talent to the tight end position, as Ian Rapoport reports that veteran tight end C.J. Ozomah is headed to Philadelphia on a one-year deal.

Uzomah was released by the Jets in March in a move that saved the team about $5.3 million on their salary cap.

The 31-year-old Uzomah was scheduled to count $11.2 million against the Jets cap.

Uzomah had only eight receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown last season and was passed by Tyler Conklin on the depth chart. Uzomah didn’t have a catch after Week 10 and was placed on injured reserve on Dec. 6 with a knee injury and missed the final five games.

Uzomah was Cincinnati’s fifth-round pick in 2015 out of Auburn. He spent his first seven seasons with the Bengals. He has 192 career catches for 1,881 yards and 16 touchdowns.

He’ll give Kellen Moore another versatile weapon in the passing game.

Former Bengals C.J. Uzomah and Hayden Hurst available ahead of free agency

Two former Bengals starters are suddenly available again.

The Cincinnati Bengals have a serious need a tight end this offseason — and two of their former starters have hit the open market on the same day.

First, the New York Jets cut ties with C.J. Uzomah. The Carolina Panthers followed by moving on from Hayden Hurst.

Uzomah was in Cincinnati before Hurst, with his departure to join the Jets what caused the arrival of Hurst in the first place. Then, Hurst’s similar departure left an opening the team tried to fill with Irv Smith Jr., which went south quickly.

For the Bengals, a reunion with either guy is a task of judging whether either can offer more or better than the combo of Tanner Hudson and Drew Sample. Both of those guys project to be back — which would leave the role of No. 1 tight end open for a free agent or even early-round rookie to occupy.

Going back to veteran names a few years later might not be the way the front office wants to go unless Uzomah or Hurst are willing to return in a more limited role than they had the last time.

Jets to release C.J. Uzomah, save over $5 million in cap space

Jets to release C.J. Uzomah, save over $5 million in cap space

The Jets are releasing tight end C.J. Uzomah, per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

This was an expected move as Uzomah becomes a cap casualty. The Jets will save $5.3 million in cap space as a result, moving them to about $25 million in room with a week before free agency.

Uzomah dropped to No. 3 on the depth chart behind Tyler Conklin and Jeremy Ruckert before an MCL sprain in Week 13 against the Atlanta Falcons ended his season. Uzomah was scheduled tk make $8 million in base salary for 2024, too much for a third tight end.

The Jets will roll with Conklin, Ruckert and perhaps 2023 7th-round pick Zack Kuntz as their tight end room for 2024. Kenny Yeboah could also return as he is a restricted free agent.

Uzomah caught 29 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns in two seasons with the Jets after signing a three-year, $24 million deal before the 2022 as a free agent. Before coming to New York, Uzomah spent seven seasons in Cincinnati, including the 2021 team that reached Super Bowl LVI.

With Super Bowl LVIII in the books and the Kansas City Chiefs cementing their dynasty by hitting the jackpot in Las Vegas, the road to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans has officially begun and the Jets are ready to push all their chips to the middle of the table in hopes of heading to the Caesars’ Superdome on February 9, 2025.

With quarterback Aaron Rodgers returning from his Achilles injury, the Jets are ready to be aggressive again this offseason, get back into contention and end a 13-year postseason drought. Here’s some of what the Jets are working with entering the offseason, including upcoming free agents and salary cap.

Jets activate Kenny Yeboah, place C.J. Uzomah on injured reserve

The Jets have brought back tight end Kenny Yeboah from injured reserve while C.J. Uzomah heads to IR.

The Jets are swapping tight ends between the active roster and injured reserve. New York announced Wednesday they have activated Kenny Yeboah to the 53-man roster off injured reserve and placed C.J. Uzomah on injured reserve.

Yeboah had been on injured reserve all season due to a preseason hamstring injury, being placed on injured reserve August 30 after making the initial 53-man roster so he could return later in the season.

Yeboah is in his third season with the Jets, mostly in a special teams role last season. He’ll serve in a similar role as the third tight end behind Tyler Conklin and Jeremy Ruckert.

Uzomah suffered an MCL Injury during Sunday’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons. He’ll miss at least the next four games while on injured reserve and it’s very possible his season is over with only five games left. The team may simply choose to keep him on injured reserve the rest of the way.

Uzomah has eight catches this season for 58 yards and a touchdown. He’s also been a key special-teams contributor. This is Uzomah’s second season with the Jets after seven seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, including the 2021 AFC championship team.

Robert Saleh gives injury updates on Perrion Winfrey, C.J. Uzomah, Jason Brownlee

Robert Saleh gives injury updates on Perrion Winfrey, C.J. Uzomah, Jason Brownlee

The Jets had a few injuries during Sunday’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons, some more serious than others. Head coach Robert Saleh provided an update on some of those injuries Monday.

Two players are heading to injured reserve: defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey (foot) and tight end C.J. Uzomah (MCL). Saleh said both injuries are “extensive”. Winfrey is likely done for the season. He was elevated from the practice squad for Week 13. He played 13 snaps against the Falcons.

Uzomah started the game but suffered his injury very early. He played just two snaps. By going on injured reserve, Uzomah could return for the regular-season finale against the Patriots.

Wide receiver Jason Brownlee has an ankle injury. Saleh was unsure on his timetable for returning. Saleh said he’ll see how the injury is throughout the week. Brownlee went without a catch Sunday in 34 offensive snaps.

C.J. Uzomah questionable to return with knee injury

Jets tight end C.J. Uzomah suffered a right knee injury during the first quarter against the Atlanta Falcons. He is questionable to return.

Uzomah needed help getting off the field before the cart came to the sideline to bring Uzomah to the locker room. Uzomah saw playing time early in the game as the Jets began with early two-tight-end sets.

Jeremy Ruckert is the only other available tight end after Tyler Conklin. The Jets did not activate Kenny Yeboah for this game.
