Stunningly stupid act wrecks Ole Miss in Egg Bowl

Ole Miss WR Elijah Moore’s foolish celebration cost Ole Miss a chance to tie the Egg Bowl.

Ole Miss overcame a fourth-and-24 and numerous other hurdles to close within 21-20 in the waning seconds of the Egg Bowl Thursday. Elijah Moore caught the short TD pass to bring the Rebels within one of the arch-rival Bullodgs.

And then, Moore, a sophomore wide receiver, decided to play the fool in the end zone and wound up costing his team the game.

Moore started acting like a dog and lifted his leg, like he was urinating.

The official near the selfish celebration threw a flag and … that turned into a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Moore. More importantly, it moved the PAT attempt back 15 yards.

Ole Miss kicker Luke Logan missed the PAT and Mississippi State had a 21-20 victory And no one would blame the Ole Miss team and their faithful if they were, um, peeved. Extra peeved, too, because the victory makes the Bulldogs bowl eligible while the Rebels sink to 4-8.

Ole Miss star scores last-second TD, pretends to pee on the field, gets extremely costly penalty

Ole Miss lost the Egg Bowl in the wildest fashion after Elijah Moore pretended to pee on the field after scoring a last-second TD.

The Egg Bowl between rivals Ole Miss and Mississippi State featured a wild ending, and Bulldogs fans may never let Rebels fans forget how they lost in 2019.

With less than 10 seconds left in a seven-point ballgame, with Mississippi State leading 21-14, Ole Miss quarterback threw a two-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Elijah Moore. Moore’s questionable celebration choice, however, would end up dooming the Rebels.

After getting in the endzone to make the score 21-20, Moore dropped to all fours, lifted his back leg, and pretended to urinate on Mississippi State’s field.

Moore earned a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty for his celebration, which backed up the point-after attempt and made the kick much more difficult. Kicker Luke Logan missed wide right, handing Mississippi State the win in an unbelievable finish.

Naturally, everyone on Twitter made the same joke.

Ole Miss at Mississippi State odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s Ole Miss Rebels at Mississippi State Bulldogs sports betting odds and lines, with college football picks and best bets

The Ole Miss Rebels (4-7, 2-5 SEC West) lock horns with the Mississippi State Bulldogs (5-6, 2-5) Thanksgiving night at 7:30 p.m. ET in the annual Egg Bowl in Starkville, Miss. We analyze the Ole Miss-Mississippi State odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Ole Miss at Mississippi State: Three things you need to know

1. This is the only bowl the Rebels will be participating in this season, but they’d like to make it so the same applies to their rivals. A win by Ole Miss would deal Mississippi State its seventh loss and prevent a postseason berth.

2. Ole Miss might have a losing record, but it’s a darling at the betting window with a 6-1 against the spread mark across the past seven. Mississippi State is 2-5 ATS in the past seven overall, and 1-5 ATS in the past six inside the SEC.

3. The Egg Bowl has been defensive lately, cashing the Under in five of the past six meetings, and each of the past four in Starkville.

Prediction

Ole Miss 29, Mississippi State 27

Moneyline (ML)

Go lightly on OLE MISS (+110) in this rivalry game, as the Rebels will be motivated to keep Mississippi State (-134) nailed to the couch for the postseason. The Rebels rolled up huge yardage on the ground last week against LSU. QB John Rhys Plumlee was a one-man wrecking crew, going for 212 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, and RB Jerrion Ealy gobbled up 141 yards on 13 totes. Hotty Toddy!

New to sports betting? Every $1 wagered that Ole Miss will win outright will return a profit of $1.10.

Against the Spread (ATS)

There isn’t a lot of sense taking Ole Miss (+2.5, -110), unless you feel it’s going to lose by one or two points. The Rebels are a much better value on the moneyline. If you feel Mississippi State (-2.5, -110) will extend its school-record streak to 10 consecutive seasons with a bowl appearance, then get out your cowbell and back the Bulldogs. I will not be joining you.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS. The projection of 58.5 is a good total. My lean would be to go Under based on the trends in this series, and the fact we just haven’t seen a lot of consistent football out of these two sides; however, I can easily see the game going Over, as Plumlee and the Rebels’ rushing attack raised eyebrows gouging potential playoff-bound LSU for huge chunks of real estate a week ago.

Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will be airlifted to Houston in order to continue seeking treatment for his hip injury, which he sustained in the Crimson Tide’s game against Mississippi State.

Tagovailoa’s hip injury, which has been diagnosed as a dislocated hip with a posterior wall feature, is one of numerous injuries he has had to deal with while at Alabama.

However, this is the first one that will cost him a season, and likely a whole lot more.

Recovery time for an injury like this will be a while, and while many rule out a return to the collegiate level, it would not be a wild idea to believe he would.

“For the past 24 hours our medical team has consulted with multiple orthopedic experts across the country, who specialize in hip injuries and surgeries,” said team doctor Lyle Cain, “Based on that research, Tua is being flown to Houston tonight to be evaluated and is scheduled to have hip surgery Monday,” Cain said.

As ESPN reported, this is Tagovailoa’s second surgery of the season, the first one being the tight-rope surgery to repair a high ankle sprain he suffered during Tennessee.

This surgery on his hip will be more serious and come with a much longer recovery time.

The Alabama Crimson Tide defeated SEC West rival, Mississippi State with a final score of 38 – 7 to advance their record to 9-1 on the season.

With Tua Tagovailoa being carted off the field and taken away in an ambulance, Mac Jones stepped in and kept the offense alive, but didn’t live up to the hype left behind by Tagovailoa.

Jones completed 7 of 11 pass attempts for 94 yards and no touchdowns.

Overall, the offense didn’t add any notable stats in the second half without Tagovailoa.

The only points scored in the half was a 22-yard field goal from Joseph Bulovas.

The defense stayed strong throughout the entire game, only allowing a lone touchdown early in the first quarter.

Next week the Crimson Tide will welcome Western Carolina into Bryant Denny Stadium, a game that will mean more now that Nick Saban will have to readjust on both sides of the ball to account for injuries.

Najee Harris put the Alabama Crimson Tide ahead of the Mississippi State Bulldogs early in Starkville.

This opening-drive touchdown came in under two minutes and shows just how strong Alabama’s offense has become.

A key take away from this drive is the offensive lines ability to not only protect quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, but al creating holes nd spaces for harris to run through.

Gus Malzahn, Bill Clark, Rush Propst at forefront of coaching searches, contract negotiations, job opportunities

Coaching search discussions, contract negotiations, job opportunities for Gus Malzahn, Bill Clark and Rush Propst.

Arkansas is in the process of hiring a new head coach. The Razorbacks are a 2020 opponent for Tennessee. The Vols will travel to Arkansas on Oct. 31, 2020.

KNOXVILLE — Arkansas fired head coach Chad Morris one day following the Razorbacksā€™ 45-19 loss to Western Kentucky in Week 11 of the 2019 season.

Morris finished his Arkansas tenure with a 4-18 record in two seasons.

Now a coaching search is taking place and Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn is at the forefront of Arkansasā€™ vacancy. Malzahn served as the Razorbacksā€™ offensive coordinator in 2006 and has a long history in the high school ranks throughout the state.

Gus Malzahn’s coaching career in Arkansas

  • Hughes High School (1991, DC)
  • Hughes High School (1992ā€“1995, HC)
  • Shiloh Christian High School (1996ā€“2000, HC)
  • Springdale High School (2001ā€“2005, HC)
  • Arkansas (2006, OC/WR)
  • Arkansas State (2012, HC)

Gus Malzahn’s playing career in Arkansas

  • Henderson State (1987ā€“1989)

Former quarterback Mitch Mustain and tight end Ben Cleveland played for Malzahn at Springdale High School and Arkansas. Both discussed their former coach on Fox Sports Knoxville’s radio show ‘Tennessee Two-A-Days’, providing their thoughts if Malzahn would leave Auburn and return to Arkansas as the Razorbacks’ next head coach.

“Obviously that is going to be the state’s number one choice is trying to get coach Malzahn back home,” Cleveland said. “At the end of the day, he gets to dictate what he wants to do. He has done a phenomenal job at Auburn, but I know everyone in the state, or even with the Arkansas program, would love to have coach Malzahn back.”

Cleveland also mentioned that the timing for Malzahn to return to Arkansas is more realistic now compared to two years ago when the Razorbacks courted the Auburn head coach.

“Circumstances need to be lined up for him to take it,” Cleveland said of Malzahn. “Do I think circumstances are more lined up now than they were two years ago, before we offered him that crazy amount, yes.”

Mustain also discussed Arkansas’ head coaching vacancy now compared to two years ago.

“It seems like we have that talk every couple of years when Arkansas decides to flip something over,” Mustain said. “One-hundred percent last time it was not a good move for him at the time. I’m not so sure this time, some things have changed.

“Having a close relationship with Gus, at least a close working relationship in the past, I would be hard-pressed to tell him to jump for it and go. Auburn, obviously he has his issues at Auburn, and there’s a lot of question as to how long he could hang onto that if he doesn’t make some serious changes. We have seen him make some changes in play-calling, taking back some of that role, and we saw a lot of improvement I think with it, and that was a criticism I even had where he was handing that off.”

‘Tennessee Two-A-Days’ co-host and former Hoover and Colquitt County High School head coach Rush Propst discussed on the show how someone “can stay at a place too long.”

“Because we’re competitors, we’re fighters, we are going to fight you tooth and nail on everything,” Propst said. “When you tell us we should go, or when you feel that maybe you are not as popular as you were two years ago, you dig into even more so to show people that you can still run this ship.

“Eventually it comes a point in time that you have to look at retirement and where do you want to end up as a human being ā€“ not as a coach but as a human being. You get to retire doing what you love, coaching football, in your home state.”

If Malzahn does leave for Arkansas, then a head coach opening would need to be filled at Auburn.

Cleveland calls UAB head coach Bill Clark “a hot name” throughout college football for any vacancy.

Propst has a longtime relationship with Clark. The former Hoover and Colquitt County head coach has been doing consultant work this season with various schools including UAB.

The seven-time high school state champion and 2015 national championship head coach has fielded college coaching discussions recently, while breaking down the game with the likes of Troy Calhoun, Trent Dilfer, Tony Franklin, Hugh Freeze, Todd Graham, Tyson Helton, Mike Leach, Hal Mumme, Jake Spavital and George Quarles.

With Clark being a candidate for head coaching vacancies at Florida State and Arkansas currently, he is also in-line for contract negotiations with UAB following three consecutive seasons of reaching a bowl game and winning the 2018 Conference-USA championship in as many years following the program’s reinstatement.

“They’re probably going to renegotiate his contract closer to $2 million,” Propst said of Clark.

Propst continued to discuss Clark’s historic achievements following UAB’s shutdown during the 2015 and 2016 seasons and him being considered for multiple Power 5 jobs.

“Nobody has done anything in the history of college football to what he did at UAB ā€“ even remotely close,” Propst said. “If Gus decided not to come (to Arkansas), he (Clark) would be a great choice because he has been able to take a program that was given the death penalty ā€“ the real death penalty ā€“ where football was taken completely away for two years. He goes back and not only brings it back to a good level, he wins the conference. He knows how to recruit. Like Gus, he is a high school coach at heart. He knows what high school coaches want to hear.”
