USC bubble watch: Mississippi State’s loss to Vanderbilt is another boost

Mississippi State joins the list of teams which could have solidified a place in the NCAA Tournament but failed.

There are so many bubble dramas to keep track of right now in college basketball. We published a bubble guide for you to consult throughout the weekend preceding the conference tournaments.

One of the really big and central bubble teams in action on Saturday was Mississippi State. The Bulldogs were generally viewed as one of the “last four in” by most bracketologists. That’s not a unanimous view, but it was a majority view. MSU was very close to the cut line, one way or the other. A win at Vanderbilt would have done for the Bulldogs what USC’s win over Arizona State achieved for the Trojans: It would have moved Mississippi State close to lock status, and put the Bulldogs in a position where it would have been harder for them to play their way out of the field.

A loss would have made their road noticeably tougher, but wouldn’t have represented a crushing, final blow. Still, the difference between winning and losing was — and is — significant.

The result for Mississippi State? The Bulldogs did lose at Vanderbilt.

It’s not a terrible loss, but it’s a loss to a team lower on the seed list. It does move MSU downward on the seed list. Meanwhile, USC keeps rising on the seed list with five wins in its last six games, the only loss being to Arizona, a team likely to be a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

When you look at bracketology posts the next 48 to 72 hours, you will likely see Mississippi State right near the cut line — maybe the very last team in the field or maybe the first team out of the field. MSU is that close.

What is MSU’s bubble outlook now?

The Bulldogs face Florida in the second round of the SEC Tournament on Thursday. MSU won’t move up the seed list by winning. That game is important for the purpose of avoiding a bad loss. MSU then would play in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals on Friday against top-seeded Alabama, the regular-season SEC champion.

A win over Bama, and Mississippi State is clearly in the NCAA Tournament.

A loss would create a very long wait for MSU on Selection Sunday, March 12. Bottom line: MSU will have to beat Alabama, and USC would have to lose its Pac-12 quarterfinal, for the Bulldogs to have any chance of finishing ahead of the Trojans on the seed list heading into Selection Sunday.

The Trojans have to like their odds of finishing ahead of Mississippi State. Alabama just has to beat the Bulldogs to help USC in this specific bubble comparison.

NCAA Tournament bubble watch: Missouri helps USC, beats Mississippi State

Entering Tuesday, Mississippi State and #USC were among the “Last Four In” the NCAA field. Mizzou’s win over MSU helps USC.

Part of life on the middle of the NCAA Tournament bubble — in the cauldron which includes the last four teams in the projected field, or the first four teams out — involves rooting against the other bubble inhabitants.

The short list of teams competing with USC for the final few NCAA Tournament berths includes Nevada and Utah State, which won on Tuesday night, but also Mississippi State, a team which started 1-7 in the SEC but then got on a hot streak. MSU defeated Utah, another bubble team, in nonconference play, and is ahead of both the Utes and Arizona State on the bubble. What ultimately matters for USC is that the Bulldogs don’t rise above the Trojans.

Tuesday night, the Missouri Tigers gave USC a big lift by beating Mississippi State 66-64 in overtime on a 3-pointer in the final 10 seconds. Mizzou missed a layup in the final three seconds of regulation which would have won the game. The Tigers regrouped in the extra period and put the squeeze on Mississippi State.

MSU has a game against Texas A&M this coming Saturday. After that, the Bulldogs face South Carolina — the SEC equivalent of Oregon State (LSU is the equivalent of Cal, in case you were wondering) — and then Vanderbilt. Mississippi State needs that A&M win to move up the ladder. If the Bulldogs don’t get it, there’s a good chance USC can remain ahead of the Bulldogs entering the conference tournaments.

The Trojans will root very hard for Texas A&M on Saturday.

Tennessee’s Josiah-Jordan James nearly collided with Mississippi State’s Bully the dog while both lunged for basketball

Good boy, Bully!

Bully (a.k.a. Jak), the Mississippi State bulldog, saw his pupper life flash before his eyes as a Tennessee Vol basketball player went hurling toward the bench where he was sitting like a good boy.

During Mississippi State’s Tuesday tilt with Tennessee, Vols senior guard Josiah-Jordan James tried to go for the basketball as it was going out of bounds.

However, James lost balance and started to lean into the front row seats where Bully and his handler were sitting. While James was trying not to collide too hard with the woman sitting with Bully, the bulldog leaped into the air in what looked to be an absolutely adorable attempt to get the basketball for himself.

Bully was unsuccessful in his attempt to get the ball, but he got a little air in the process.

However, Mississippi State junior guard/forward Cameron Matthews was right on hand to give Bully some good boy scratches and love to comfort him for not getting the basketball.

Every dog has its day, but Bully deserves plenty of cookies and some time in the backyard for his close call at Tuesday’s game.

Alabama vs. Mississippi State: Stream, injury report, broadcast info for Wednesday, Dec. 28

[autotag]Nate Oats[/autotag] and the Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball team had one of the most impressive non-conference performances in the country. Now, the Tide hoops team will look to carry that positive momentum into SEC play when they travel to Starkville to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Wednesday night’s matchup will not be easy for No. 9 Alabama as the Bulldogs are also off to an impressive start and are currently ranked No. 20.

Alabama and Mississippi State have long been hoops rivals and under coach Oats and new Bulldog head coach Chris Jans, I expect that to continue.

Here is everything you need to know to catch all the action between Alabama and Mississippi State.

4-star SG Riley Kugel is ready to commit

Mike White and the Georgia Bulldogs are among the top three schools for elite shooting guard Riley Kugel.

Mike White and the Georgia Bulldogs are among the top three schools for elite shooting guard Riley Kugel. Georgia is still looking to add to its roster ahead of the 2022-2023 college basketball season.

The Bulldogs could use a talented player like Riley Kugel, who previously signed with Mississippi State. Kugel, a four-star shooting guard, backed off his commitment to Mississippi State after they changed coaches following the 2021-2022 college basketball season.

Kugel is considering committing to Georgia, Florida, and LSU. All three of Kugel’s potential homes have undergone some serious change this offseason. Georgia basketball coach Mike White is competing against his former school in what should be a very interesting decision.

Riley Kugel is the No. 78 recruit in the country, the No. 8 shooting guard, and the No. 14 recruit in Florida. The 6-foot-4, 175-pound shooting guard played high school basketball for Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Florida.

The four-star shooting guard will be a great, late addition one lucky team’s class of 2022. Kugel has won a pair of state championships.

Now, he is set to commit to where he will play college basketball at 6:00 p.m. EDT on May 23. Kugel will announce his decision via Instagram.

The four-star shooting guard is a late riser in the class of 2022 rankings. Riley Kugel recently visited Florida on April 21.

Former UNC forward Garrison Brooks stands out at PIT

Former North Carolina forward Garrison Brooks made the All-Tournament Team at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament over the weekend.

Former UNC basketball forward [autotag]Garrison Brooks[/autotag] spent last weekend participating in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament — an event meant for selected players from the DI, DII, DIII, and NAIA levels to improve draft stock.

Each player must put in an application and 64 players are selected to compete.

Brooks, who spent four seasons at UNC and his final year at Mississippi State, was named to the All-Tournament Team following his performance in the event.

Brooks averaged 19 points on 60.5 percent (23/38) shooting from the field and 8.3 rebounds per game. His best game was his final, going for 25 points and nine rebounds.

The 6-foot-9 forward played in 133 games in his North Carolina career, averaging 9.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. His best season was his junior year, putting up 16.8 points per game and adding 8.5 rebounds to go along with it. He was an All-ACC performer as well as the Most Improved Player in the league that season.

After transferring to Mississippi State, where he used his Covid year of eligibility to play for his dad who was an assistant coach on staff, he averaged 10.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. He also added to his game, shooting 34.2 percent from three on 2.2 attempts per game.

Brooks is currently not on any NBA Draft boards but will most likely find a spot in the G League, especially after his performance last weekend.

Auburn vs Mississippi State Game Preview

Why Auburn Will Win

It’s not like the Tigers are limping along, but it’s not exactly closing out the regular season strong losing two of the last three games.

So what’s the problem for the former No. 1 team?

It’s not doing a good enough job from the field and the threes aren’t there, but the defense has been fantastic. Vanderbilt is the only team in the last six games to get to 40% from the field against the Auburn D, and there’s no worry about Mississippi State bombing away.

The Tiger defense is the best in the SEC in field goal percentage D, and most importantly against the Bulldogs, it has the interior presence to come up with a whole lot of blocks and rebounds.

Again, Mississippi State isn’t going to do anything from three, but …

Why Mississippi State Will Win

The Bulldogs make a whole bunch of things happen on the inside.

No, they don’t take threes and don’t make them when they try, but they still have one of the SEC’s best shooting offenses because of what they do on the inside.

They’ve won three of the last four games even though the shooting hasn’t been all that amazing. Their own D has been great at stopping teams from the outside, but to pull this off they need to keep the turnovers to a minimum, get on the move for easy points, and get the ball inside over and over again.

However …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, the three. The inability of Mississippi State to do anything on the outside will be a problem.

Beating Missouri two games in a row and getting by Vanderbilt at home is fine, but to beat Auburn you have to go over the top. Florida beat the Tigers with ten threes, and Tennessee was just good enough getting six.

Mississippi State has made 7-of-46 three over the last four games.

Mississippi State vs Alabama Game Preview

Why Mississippi State Will Win

Mississippi State might not be able to get the offense going enough to turn things around in a rough 1-5 run, but the team is still doing a great job on the boards and it’s moving the ball around well.

How was it able to beat Alabama the first time around? It was a disaster from three, but it came up with 41 rebounds and was able to D up just enough to survive in the 78-76 thriller.

It also helped that Alabama fouled the Bulldogs over and over and over again. The 38 free throw attempts were a bit deal, and that’s the norm. The Crimson Tide fouls a whole lot, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Alabama Will Win

This Mississippi State team just doesn’t shoot or make threes.

It’s a big deal if the offense can come up with more than four threes in a game, and it’s not going to be able to get away with that this time around.

Alabama might be scrapping a bit to try closing out the regular season with a run, but it’s going to keep bombing away, and it’s going to at least double up the number of Mississippi State three-pointers.

Yeah, yeah, the Bulldogs did it the first time around, but they’re not going to keep up the pace if Bama gets rolling at home because …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

12-2, and those two losses were to Auburn and Kentucky. That’s what Alabama is in Coleman.

Mississippi State in true road games? 0-6.

Oh sure, Bama will get hit with about 20 fouls because that’s what it does, but it’ll match the Mississippi State free throws with threes.
