Tennessee vs Mississippi State Game Preview

Why Tennessee Will Win

The Vols got their groove back after the loss to Texas last week.

The shooting is back, the threes are dropping, and the team cranked up the scoring in wins over Texas A&M and South Carolina.

With them, it’s all about being able tom move the ball. Of course everyone does well when there are lots of assists – obviously that means there’s scoring – but that’s the litmus test. Is the offense moving the ball around well?

It’s one of the best passing teams in the country, going 15-1 when it comes up with more than ten assists.

Mississippi State has allowed more than ten assists in every game but six.

Why Mississippi State Will Win

The Bulldogs have hit a bit of a wall.

They’re not shooting well enough and they’re not getting enough offensive rebounds – that’s a rough combination.

Tennessee isn’t all that great from the field – at least until recently – and again, it’s all about the assists, but Mississippi State is good at coming up with steals and needs to keep that extra pass from leading to a midrange shot.

Mississippi State won’t fire from the outside, but it’s also good at keeping teams from getting hot from three.

Home court means everything.

Tennessee is 12-0 at home, and 4-6 when it’s not. Mississippi State is 12-1 at home – the only loss against Minnesota back in early December – and 2-7 when it’s not.

Yeah, Mississippi State is on a rough run, but all four of the losses in the 2-4 stretch were away from Humphrey. The team shoots so, so much better at home.

Mississippi State vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Mississippi State Will Win

The Bulldogs have been relatively consistent.

They’re good at not screwing up, and the defense is tight enough to keep games from getting out of hand, but the key is their ability to keep on making enough shots to make use about every game interesting – even in the losses.

There’s a good inside presence – it doesn’t do a lot from three – and the offense is great at getting to the rim averaging 48% a game from the field. It seems obvious, but against the Texas Tech defense, the ability to simply make shots is a must. The Bulldogs can generate their own openings.

But …

Why Texas Tech Will Win

That defense.

Texas Tech is among the best in the nation defensively – the 94-91 double overtime loss to Kansas was an aberration – allowing fewer than 70 points in 12 straight games before the trip Allen Fieldhouse.

It’s a good overall formula. Play great defense, get fouled a lot, make a ton of free throws, overcome the lack of threes and high-octane firepower. Again, Mississippi State might be consistent, but it doesn’t score in bunches, especially from three.

Texas Tech would be more than happy to bog this down a bit, get up by a decent margin, and make Mississippi State try to start hitting from the outside to make it a game.

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech’s defense will be too much.

The team will have had several days to rest up and recuperate from the Kansas game, and now at home the defense should rise back up and get back to normal.

However, Texas Tech if committing too many fouls lately. Mississippi State will hang around on the free throw line, but the threes won’t be there to pull this off.

Three reasons why Oklahoma beat Mississippi State 63-62

It came down to the wire. Here are three reasons why the Sooners took down Mississippi State 63-62.

It came down to the wire.

After a Jamal Bieniemy miss with 16 seconds left in the game, Mississippi State had no timeouts and raced down the floor. The Bulldogs were forced to take a contested jumpsuit, missing and giving Oklahoma a big NCAA Tournament resume building win.

Here are three reasons why the Sooners took down Mississippi State 63-62.

HELLO, ALONDES WILLIAMS

As Mississippi State started to make its run in the second half, one Oklahoma player kept the Sooners afloat.

Junior college transfer Alondes Williams came alive in the second half, scoring 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-3 from three. The Bulldogs tied the game at 38 before a Williams’ 3-pointer and steal that turned into a dunk pushed Oklahoma back ahead by five.

MISSISSIPPI STATE FOUL TROUBLE

There is an ‘if’ in Saturday’s game.

Star Mississippi State forward Reggie Perry picked up two early fouls and then a technical foul to give him three early in the first half. Perry, who had averaged over 20 points and 10 rebounds in the previous three games, was forced to sit for majority of the game.

No telling how his presence would’ve effected the outcome of the game.

DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE

Oklahoma’s defense is a tough task to go against.

Although undersized, the Sooners dealt with the size and physicality of the Mississippi State bigs inside. Overall, Oklahoma held Mississippi State to 38 percent shooting for the game.
