Orcas thrill beachgoers at Seattle park; even the dog is excited

Footage captured by Alyssa Slovinac at Golden Gardens Park shows the iconic mammals breaching just yards from shore.

Beachgoers at Seattle’s Golden Gardens Park on Saturday were thrilled when orcas began to breach just yards from shore.

The accompanying footage was captured by Alyssa Slovinac and shared via X by Madison Wade of King 5 News.

It begins with one orca leaping almost entirely out of the water and includes more breaching and other types of behavior.

“Oh … my god,” the videographer says in apparent disbelief.

Others express similar sentiments as gulls arrive and a dog begins to bark.

Orca sightings off Seattle are not uncommon, but it’s undoubtedly a rare thrill when the iconic mammals join your group on a morning walk.

Dog escapes attacking leopard, thanks to pet owner’s actions

Video from a home in India shows a leopard sneaking up on a dog, grabbing it and leaping off a balcony before its owner comes to the rescue.

A surveillance camera at a home in India captured footage of a leopard sneaking up on and attacking a dog lying on a rug on an outside balcony.

Video shows the leopard grabbing the dog, leaping off the balcony and trying to run off with it only to be foiled by the pet owner, whose screams and chase of the animal was enough to prompt the release of the dog.

Once it was freed from the leopard’s grasp, the dog quickly ran in the opposite direction.

The incident occurred on January 20 at 3:22 p.m. in the municipality of Coonoor, Tamil Nadu, according to Newsflare.

Nature Is Metal posted the video on its Instagram account. Newsflare also shows the video. (Note: To view on some servers, you might have to click on the link.).

Owl swoops on dog, returns to attack owner in Massachusetts

The dog was uninjured but its owner suffered gash wounds to his head during the harrowing incident.

A Massachusetts man was attacked by an owl Monday night seconds after the raptor had swooped toward his dog.

Boston 25 News reported that Kenneth Wadness of Medfield suffered cuts to his head during the harrowing incident.

“This owl came and swooped right next to Micah and right by my elbow,” Wadness said. “He took off and I couldn’t see him [but] within 10 seconds he whacked me with his talons. He hit me in the back of my head.”

Wadness armed himself with a branch and carried his dog to his vehicle.

Andrew Vitz of the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife said the owl might have been protecting its territory as the birds are entering nesting season.

Vitz advised people to keep small pets inside at night.

Birds-of-prey attacks on pets are rare but sometimes occur.

In June 2022 a doorbell camera captured footage showing a bald eagle attempting to fly off with a pet Yorkie in Prince Rupert, British Columbia.

The footage shows the Yorkie crying out as a shadow appears overhead and the eagle swoops down to grab her from a porch. The eagle grabs but quickly releases the dog after banging into a container while attempting to take flight.

Hunter in ‘shock’ as shark attacks dog trying to retrieve duck

A hunter’s Chesapeake retriever was killed by a shark Wednesday after leaping from a boat to fetch a downed duck.

[anyclip-media thumbnail=”undefined” playlistId=”undefined” content=”dW5kZWZpbmVk”][/anyclip-media]A hunter’s Chesapeake retriever was attacked by a shark Wednesday after leaping from a boat to fetch a downed duck.

The female dog, named Pepper, died from injuries sustained in the unusual incident near Port Medway, Nova Scotia.

The dog’s owner, who chose to remain anonymous, told the Global News that Pepper was retrieving her second duck of the morning when the attack occurred.

“It happened so quickly and was so shocking that even though I was looking right at her when it happened, I cannot say for certain what type of shark it was,” the hunter said.

The man hauled Pepper aboard, but she died shortly after. The shark, possibly a juvenile white shark, measured about 8 feet.

The hunter said he shared details of the attack with the Global News as a caution to area water users.

“I was very close to shore, in about 20 feet of water, and my dog was only in the water for a matter of minutes,” he said. “To my knowledge, this is the first time a dog has been taken during a sea-ducking hunt, and it is certainly the first time I have witnessed the violence of such an attack so close to my boat.”

A very good dog caught a home run ball at a Dodgers spring training game

What a good dog!

During a Saturday spring training game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Kansas City Royals, a home run turned into a game of fetch for one lucky dog.

As Dodgers second baseman Michael Busch hammered one over the wall in Los Angeles’ preseason finale, the ball hopped over just enough to where a dog in the crowd caught it with his mouth and proudly gave it to his owner.

The world needs more dogs that are able to catch home run baseballs, and it was delightful to see everyone in the crowd cheer on the dog as he retrieved the ball for his owner, who sported a K-9 Dodgers jersey.

Spring training may not have actual stakes for the regular season, but if a dog can catch a baseball, it’s still worthwhile for the folks in the stands.

Someone make sure that dog gets to keep the baseball and is given plenty of treats for his very good fetching.

Tennessee’s Josiah-Jordan James nearly collided with Mississippi State’s Bully the dog while both lunged for basketball

Good boy, Bully!

Bully (a.k.a. Jak), the Mississippi State bulldog, saw his pupper life flash before his eyes as a Tennessee Vol basketball player went hurling toward the bench where he was sitting like a good boy.

During Mississippi State’s Tuesday tilt with Tennessee, Vols senior guard Josiah-Jordan James tried to go for the basketball as it was going out of bounds.

However, James lost balance and started to lean into the front row seats where Bully and his handler were sitting. While James was trying not to collide too hard with the woman sitting with Bully, the bulldog leaped into the air in what looked to be an absolutely adorable attempt to get the basketball for himself.

Bully was unsuccessful in his attempt to get the ball, but he got a little air in the process.

However, Mississippi State junior guard/forward Cameron Matthews was right on hand to give Bully some good boy scratches and love to comfort him for not getting the basketball.

Every dog has its day, but Bully deserves plenty of cookies and some time in the backyard for his close call at Tuesday’s game.

Rhino sneaks up on sleeping dog, gives it a scare in hilarious video

A dog sound asleep on the side of a road nearly came out of its skin when a rhino strolled up from behind and gently touched it.

A dog sound asleep on the side of a road nearly came out of its skin when a rhino strolled up and gently touched it.

The dog woke from a deep sleep, lazily tilted its head back and, in a split second, recognized what was behind it and immediately ran off barking, probably trying to tell it to never do that again.

Video of the hilarious encounter was posted on Twitter by Susanta Nanda of the Indian Forest Service. He wrote, “If you wanted any proof that the Rhinos are really gentle…”

The footage was filmed in the village of Ratnagar in southern Nepal, according to Metro.co.uk.

“Greater one-horned rhinos live in northeastern India and southern Nepal, but poaching and habitat loss mean that there are now only around 3,700 left,” Metro wrote.

“Luckily for the dog, all five species of rhinos are herbivores, eating mainly vegetation.

“So, it wasn’t ever in danger of being eaten – though being sat on definitely wouldn’t have been fun either.”

Watch: Unleashed dog harasses endangered Hawaiian monk seal

A 52-year-old man was cited Tuesday by state and federal authorities in after his dog was caught on video harassing an endangered Hawaiian monk seal.

A 52-year-old man was cited Tuesday in Hawaii by state and federal authorities after his dog was caught on video harassing an endangered monk seal.

The incident occurred Oct. 10 at Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park on the island of Hawaii.

The accompanying footage, released this week by the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, shows the dog menacing the seal, and the seal’s frightened reaction.

The footage also shows the dog’s owner approaching the seal while trying to catch and leash his dog.

The man’s identity was not disclosed out of concern that he’ll become the target of threats and harassment – as has occurred after past incidents involving the culturally revered seals.

ALSO: In San Diego, a dead great white shark and a plea to anglers

The Hawaiian monk seal, endemic to the northwest Hawaiian islands, is one of the most endangered marine mammals in the world. Only about 1,400 remain and people are required to give them space when they haul ashore to rest.

The Hawaii DNLR stated in a news release that it took weeks to track down the man, a recent transplant from the mainland, after receiving video footage captured by a witness.

State citations include harassment of an endangered or threatened species and permitting a dog to stray in violation of the Hawaii County Code. Federal citations include violation of the Endangered Species Act and failure to restrain a pet, disturbing wildlife activities.

The man is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 26, 2023.
