Auburn vs Mississippi State Game Preview

Why Auburn Will Win

Anything interesting happening at Auburn this week?

Carnell “Cadillac” Williams will step in as the interim head coach after the Bryan Harsin era came to an end. Yes, Auburn has lost four straight, and yes, it was a massive break against Missouri away from being on a six game losing run, but there are a few positives.

The offense perked up over the last few weeks. It ran well against Ole Miss and Robbie Ashford threw for 285 yards in last week’s loss to Arkansas. That’s a step forward, and so was not turning the ball over against the Hogs – giveaways have been an issue.

But it comes down to this – can Auburn hold up against the Mississippi State midrange passing game?

For all of the problems and issues, Auburn’s pass defense isn’t getting gouged, but …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Mississippi State Will Win

No one has rocked the passing game against the Auburn defense because everyone spends so much time running.

LSU couldn’t complete a thing, but the ground game was good enough and the defense forced four takeaways in its win. Georgia ran for almost 300 yards, Ole Miss went off, and Arkansas rumbled at will last week – the Tigers allowed well over 1,000 rushing yards over the last three games.

Mississippi State will be effective on the ground, but that’s not how this works.

The Tigers haven’t seen anything like this Bulldog passing game, but Penn State’s Sean Clifford was able to hit the midrange throws as much as he wanted, Stetson Bennett connected on 69% of his throws in Georgia’s win, KJ Jefferson of Arkansas was terrific through the air last week, and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Here comes the Mississippi State passing game. However, the team is 0-3 when it doesn’t hit 300 yards and 5-0 when it does.

Auburn hasn’t allowed 300 yards in any passing game so far. It’s about to see that go bye-bye.

Auburn isn’t playing that poorly considering what a disaster of a season this is. However, it won’t be able to come up with a third down stop, it’ll turn the ball over in a big moment, and the Bulldogs will crank up the machine now that they’re back home.

Auburn vs Mississippi State Game Preview

Why Auburn Will Win

It’s not like the Tigers are limping along, but it’s not exactly closing out the regular season strong losing two of the last three games.

So what’s the problem for the former No. 1 team?

It’s not doing a good enough job from the field and the threes aren’t there, but the defense has been fantastic. Vanderbilt is the only team in the last six games to get to 40% from the field against the Auburn D, and there’s no worry about Mississippi State bombing away.

The Tiger defense is the best in the SEC in field goal percentage D, and most importantly against the Bulldogs, it has the interior presence to come up with a whole lot of blocks and rebounds.

Again, Mississippi State isn’t going to do anything from three, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Mississippi State Will Win

The Bulldogs make a whole bunch of things happen on the inside.

No, they don’t take threes and don’t make them when they try, but they still have one of the SEC’s best shooting offenses because of what they do on the inside.

They’ve won three of the last four games even though the shooting hasn’t been all that amazing. Their own D has been great at stopping teams from the outside, but to pull this off they need to keep the turnovers to a minimum, get on the move for easy points, and get the ball inside over and over again.

However …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, the three. The inability of Mississippi State to do anything on the outside will be a problem.

Beating Missouri two games in a row and getting by Vanderbilt at home is fine, but to beat Auburn you have to go over the top. Florida beat the Tigers with ten threes, and Tennessee was just good enough getting six.

Mississippi State has made 7-of-46 three over the last four games.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Auburn vs Mississippi State Game Preview

Why Mississippi State Will Win

The passing game continues to get stronger and stronger.

The Bulldogs might have lost to Arkansas last week, but QB Will Rogers is starting to push the ball a little deeper, more big plays are coming, and the midrange air show is on fire.

Rogers is hitting over 75% of his throws with three or more touchdowns in six games, and now he gets to go against an Auburn defense that can be thrown on.

The Tigers haven’t been gouged, but Matt Corral of Ole Miss, LSU’s Max Johnson, and Penn State’s Sean Clifford were each able to crank up over 300 yards.

Assume Rogers steps off the bus with 350 passing yards, controls the game from the start – the Bulldogs are fantastic at dictating the tempo – and rely on a defense that’s been great at getting into the backfield.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Auburn Will Win

The Mississippi State defense just got run over – at least a bit – but Arkansas, allowing a season-high 202 rushing yards. Auburn’s ground attack didn’t work a lick against Texas A&M, but it has to at least give it a shot early on.

No, the Tigers aren’t going to tear off a big day on the ground, but if they commit to it they should be able to get around 160 or so. That might be just enough to help control the clock a wee bit – they can’t let Mississippi State have the ball for 35 minutes – and give Bo Nix easy third down chances.

The Auburn offensive front is playing just well enough hold its own. In this, the more Auburn offensive balance, the better.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a fun matchup and a big moment for both teams.

Mississippi State played well in the loss to Arkansas, and if it can win this it’s bowl eligible, gets Tennessee State next to tune up even more, and then it’s Egg Bowl time against Ole Miss with a chance to close out with a strong kick.

Auburn got stuffed by a great Texas A&M defense last week, and while it’s already bowl eligible, the date at South Carolina next week isn’t such a sure thing and the finale against Alabama is obviously not a two-foot putt.

It’ll be a close, tight game late with the Auburn defense rising up and coming up with one big stop. Mississippi State’s field goal kicking problems will continue to be an Achilles’ heel.

Why Auburn Will Win

The Tigers might have struggled against the stars of the West – getting rocked by Alabama and Texas A&M over the last two weeks – but they’ve been able to beat the mediocre.

Okay, there was a South Carolina blip in the middle of the season, but for the most part, the defense has been okay, the secondary has been decent, and the real issue – getting gutted by the Texas A&M running game and having problems with Tennessee and Ole Miss – won’t be a concern against the Bulldogs.

There’s no running game whatsoever coming from Mike Leach’s team – and the nation’s worst running game – there aren’t enough big plays down the field, and there are too many issues at scoring when the chances are there.

But …

Week 15 College Schedule

Why Mississippi State Will Win

The turnovers have slowed, and the team has improved because of it.

Giveaways were a gigantic problem over the first five games with 19 in all, and then the glitch got fixed. Over the last three games, MSU has turned it over just once, and the five takeaways against Vanderbilt led to the second win of the season outside of the start against LSU.

It also helps that Will Rogers has grown into the starting quarterback job, improving his passing numbers in each of his six appearances and coming off a terrific 440-yard, three-touchdown day in the loss to Ole Miss.

The third down conversions continue to be an issue, but the Bulldogs get to go against the SEC’s worst defense at coming up with third down stops.

What’s Going To Happen

Mississippi State will rise up in the regular season finale – it still might get a bowl game out of all of this.

Continually lost throughout this season has been a defense that’s been good enough to get by. There were the expected problems against the top teams, and getting ripped up by Vanderbilt wasn’t fun, but for the most part, it’s been okay.

After getting pounded on last week by the A&M running game, the Tiger D will get picked on by the Mississippi State passing attack.
