Texans work out a pair of kickers and interior defensive linemen

The Houston Texans worked out two kickers and two interior defensive linemen on Monday.

The Houston Texans worked out four players on Monday, which included a pair of kickers in Michael Badgley and Joey Slye. In 34 career games, Badgley has made 52 field goals after joining the Los Angeles Chargers in 2018. Slye joined the Carolina Panthers in 2019 and recorded 54 career field goals.

The Texans will need a contingency plan at the position, with Ka’imi Fairbairn still dealing with a minor muscle injury ahead of their season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

Fairbairn sustained the injury in warm-ups prior to the Texans’ final preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. According to coach David Culley, the Texans held Fairbairn out of the 23-16 loss due to precautionary reasons. Safety Justin Reid replaced Fairbairn as the team’s kicker. However, Reid only handled kickoffs and did not attempt any point-afters or field goals.

In addition to Badgley and Slye, Houston also worked out defensive linemen Josh Avery and Miles Brown. Brown’s lone season in the NFL came in 2019 with the Arizona Cardinals when he recorded four combined tackles through nine games.

Avery signed with the Seattle Seahawks last season as an undrafted free agent from Southeast Missouri State, and was in training camp with the Green Bay Packers this season.

Lions bring back Darren Fells and Dean Marlowe among roster maneuvers

The Lions used a roster manipulation to create space and quickly brought back Fells and Marlowe. Detroit also made several changes to the practice squad.

Lions fans whose blood pressure surged with the odd news of the team releasing two prominent veterans on Wednesday can relax. The Lions quickly re-signed tight end Darren Fells and safety Dean Marlowe in a series of roster maneuvers on Thursday.

Fells and Marlowe were never going anywhere. The Lions exploited the NFL’s rules that require a player to be on the active roster for a day before being placed on injured reserve. Detroit had two players destined for I.R. in Tim Boyle and Da’Shawn Hand, but they needed to wait a day. After claiming WR KhaDarel Hodge and PK Austin Seibert off waivers, GM Brad Holmes needed two quick, temporary roster spots, and waived the vested veterans Fells and Marlowe to create the space.

The Lions also made a few changes to the team’s 16-man practice squad. Holmes brought in five players who spent the preseason on other rosters:

  • OLB Jessie Lemonier
  • QB Steven Montez
  • CB Parnell Motley
  • TE Jared Pinkney
  • TE Shane Zylstra

To make room for the newcomers, the Lions released four players from the initial practice squad. All were with the Lions throughout training camp:

  • LB Rashod Berry
  • DT Miles Brown
  • TE Alize Mack
  • RB Dedrick Mills

Presenting the Detroit Lions initial 2021 practice squad

Which players made the Lions practice squad and breaking down what they offer the team

With the 53-man active roster established, though in flux with some more moves beyond the initial cutdowns, the Detroit Lions have established the practice squad for the 2021 team.

The Lions can retain up to 16 players on the practice squad. Up to six of those can be vested veterans who would previously not qualify for the practice squad due to service time, a rule change made to accommodate the COVID-19 pandemic from last season.

The team can protect up to four players each week from being signed away to another team, though that protection does not start until after Week 1.

Here are the players on the Lions practice squad officially announced by the team on Wednesday. Reports of the team signing QB Steven Montez are not yet official.

Lions waive-injured OT Tyrell Crosby among series of roster cuts

Offensive tackles Tyrell Crosby and Dan Skipper were each waived with injury status, ending their 2021 seasons in Detroit

The Detroit Lions got a sweeping start off on their roster cutdowns. The team made several moves on Monday in advance of the 4 p.m. Tuesday deadline to trim the active roster to 53.

After earlier releasing WR Breshad Perriman and CB Mike Ford, the Lions announced more cuts from head coach Dan Campbell prior to taking the practice field on Monday. The most notable is offensive tackle Tyrell Crosby, who was waived with injury designation.

Crosby was the team’s starting right tackle in 2020 and was projected to be the top reserve offensive lineman in 2021, but he’s battled an injury throughout training camp. He played poorly in the third preseason game, allowing an easy sack in the loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Campbell did not mince words in talking about the decision to waive Crosby.

We didn’t feel like he was one of the best guys,” Campbell said.

The same fate befell offensive tackle Dan Skipper, who would have been the proverbial “next man up” behind Crosby. Skipper suffered a bad leg injury in Friday night’s preseason finale against Buffalo.

Both Crosby and Skipper will revert to the Lions’ injured reserve if they are not claimed by another team. They will not be eligible to return for Detroit in 2021.

The other players released on Monday:

  • WR Victor Bolden
  • DT Miles Brown
  • OL Evan Heim
  • WR Damion Ratley
  • S Alijah Holder

None of the players released are expected to be candidates for the Lions’ practice squad.

Lions top performers from PFF vs Colts and preseason recap

With PFF’s grades released, here are the top performers for the Detroit Lions against the Colts as well as the preseasons top players

The Detroit Lions finished their preseason winless after dropping to the Indianapolis Colts 27-17. However, in a game where coach Dan Campbell decided to rest a fair amount of starters, it gave players fighting for a roster spot one last chance to make an impression.

Pro Football Focus has released grades for the top offensive and defensive performers for the Lions against the Colts. PFF gives you a general feel on how well some of the fringe roster players performed.

Offense:

  1. TE Darren Fells: 92.8
  2. OT Dan Skipper: 76.1
  3. WR Geronimo Allison: 74.4
  4. RB Dedrick Mills: 72.0
  5. OG Logan Stenberg: 69.2

It is nice to see a rebound from Fells after the debacle against the Steelers, considering how thin the Lions are at tight end with disappointing performances from Alize Mack and Brock Wright. It was unfortunate to see Skipper (wish him well) carted off because he had a solid game especially run blocking. It might be too late for Allison, but you can’t say he is not putting up a fight. Stenberg should slot in as a reserve guard, but his status is up in the air without knowing the severity of his injury.

Defense:

  1. CB Corn Elder: 95.3
  2. DT Bruce Hector: 90.3
  3. EDGE Austin Bryant: 90.1
  4. OLB Rashod Berry: 81.5
  5. S Dean Marlowe: 80.1

Elder saw his roster chances diminish after getting pushed down the depth chart. Still, he made the most of his last opportunity to make an impression by securing the only Lions interception this preseason. Hector was thought of as nothing more than a camp body, but he has made a chances count and put his name into considering as a depth defensive tackle. Bryant has been a force on the edge, and if he can stay healthy, he will give the Lions good depth on the outside. Berry provided good pressure against the Colts, but it is hard to see him slotting out a role as a late addition. With the safety group questionable, it is good to see Marlowe performing well in hopes of providing a solid presence down the field.

Noteworthy players:

Penei Sewell is not having a preseason as he hoped for, finishing as the lowest graded offensive player vs. the Colts and near the bottom for the entire preseason. With the transition to right tackle and not having seen a lick of football in nearly two years, he is obviously still getting his feet under him.

Thankfully the Lions got ahold of Derrick Barnes or talked about how bad the inside linebacker corps is. Once again, Jalen Reeves-Maybin and Jahlani Tavai finish as the two worst defensive players against the Colts. It’s hard to see Tavai making the team, and if it weren’t for Reeves-Maybin’s special team’s abilities, it could see that fate as well.

Also, for your viewing pleasure, here are the top performers over the entire preseason.

Offense:

  1. RB Craig Reynolds: 86.0
  2. RB Dedrick Mills: 81.7
  3. QB Jared Goff: 80.1
  4. TE Darren Fells: 79.5
  5. WR Javon McKinley: 79.2

In one of the most heated battles this preseason, Reynold and Mills finish as the top two offensive performers. They have given the coaching staff plenty to think about in the roster construction. Goff finishing this high should tell you how well the Lions backup quarterback position has gone this preseason.

Fells did have a hiccup against the Steelers, but other than that, he has been solid as the second tight end behind T.J. Hockenson. McKinley has had a rollercoaster of a preseason, and he may fall short for a roster spot, but he should be destined for the practice squad.

Defense:

  1. CB Corn Elder: 95.3
  2. S Dean Marlowe: 84.7
  3. DL Levi Onwuzurike: 84.5
  4. LB Derrick Barnes: 83.8
  5. DL Miles Brown: 82.4

Elder only played one game this preseason, but he did make it count and could provide a veteran presence behind A.J. Parker. Marlowe has been the lone bright spot in the safety group and should look on as a steady contributor meaning the deep part of the field.

Onwuzurike proved to be as advertised after returning from his injury as a powerful force on the defensive line and gave the offense a nice punch in the mouth. Barnes has been the single biggest breath of fresh air with the linebacker corps and should look to contribute immediately behind Jamie Collins and Alex Anzalone. With the hype surrounding Bruce Hector and Kevin Strong, Brown has flown under the radar providing a stable body up the middle. With the number of injuries surrounding a few players on the defensive line, he could be a sneaky addition.

Lions sign free agent DT Miles Brown

Brown is a nose tackle who played for the Cardinals in 2019

The Detroit Lions have added more bulk to the defensive line. The Lions signed free agent defensive tackle Miles Brown to the 90-man roster prior to Friday morning’s training camp practice session.

Brown, 23, is entering his third NFL season. He spent last season on the practice squad with both the Cardinals and Titans. Brown played just over 100 snaps for Arizona as an undrafted rookie out of Wofford in 2019.

The Lions have John Penisini and Alim McNeill at nose tackle already, and recently added DL depth with Bruce Hector. Brown can help absorb some of the practice reps and preseason snaps in his audition with the team.

Tennessee Titans add three players to practice squad

The Titans have add some insurance for Stephen Gostkowski.

The Tennessee Titans added three players to their practice squad on Tuesday ahead of the Week 10 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts.

According to Jim Wyatt of Titans Online, the three players that have been added are kicker Giorgio Tavecchio, offensive lineman Daniel Munyer and defensive lineman Miles Brown. Both Tavecchio and Brown recently had tryouts with the Titans.

Kicker Tucker McCann, who has been on the team’s practice squad all season, was recently placed on the practice squad/injured list, so the addition of Tavecchio gives the Titans some insurance behind Stephen Gostkowski.

Tavecchio has played in 19 career games (16 with the Oakland Raiders in 2018 and three with the Atlanta Falcons in 2019) and has a career field goal success rate of 80.8 percent. He has missed just one of his 42 extra point attempts.

Munyer is a familiar face and returns after the Titans waived him on Saturday. Brown has nine games of NFL experience, all of which came with the Arizona Cardinals in 2019. He totaled four combined tackles (two solo, two for loss) in 123 snaps last season.

Texans work out NT Miles Brown, DT Ryan Glasgow

The Houston Texans worked out Miles Brown, Ryan Glasgow, and two other veterans on Tuesday.

The Houston Texans are tacitly acknowledging they need help up front on the defensive line.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans worked out nose tackle Miles Brown on Tuesday. The former 2019 undrafted free agent from Wofford played nine games for the Arizona Cardinals last year, collecting four total tackles and a tackle for loss. The Cardinals waived Brown at the end of training camp this year.

Glasgow is a former 2017 Cincinnati Bengals fourth-round pick. The 6-3, 300-pound defensive tackle played 24 games for the AFC North club, starting in three. Glasgow collected 41 total tackles along with four tackles for loss and three quarterback hits.

Houston also worked out defensive back Saquan Hampton and offensive tackle Jordan Mills.

The New Orleans Saints took Hampton in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, and he provided a tackle for loss in five games with New Orleans.

The Chicago Bears drafted Mills in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL Draft from Louisiana Tech. The 6-5, 316-pound bookend played for Chicago from 2013-14 before spending 2015 with the Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions, and Buffalo Bills, where he remained through the 2018 season. In 2019, Mills played for the Miami Dolphins and the Cardinals. Mills has 90 games under his belt with 84 career starts with the majority of them at right tackle.

Cardinals release WR Hakeem Butler, others on eve of final cuts

Last year’s fourth-round pick is let go even before the final day to make roster moves.

The Arizona Cardinals entered the day with 74 players on their roster and have until Saturday afternoon to get get it down to 53. They announced five moves on Friday to get the roster down to 69 players.

They released four players outright, including last year’s fourth-round pick, receiver Hakeem Butler.

Getting released along with Butler were offensive lineman Sam Jones, defensive lineman Miles Brown and punter Ryan Winslow.

Offensive lineman Brett Toth was waived/injured. He has an issue with a hamstring. If he clears waivers, he will revert to injured reserve.

Butler is the most prominent player to get cut. Brown was the only undrafted rookie to make the team last season, but when the Cardinals signed Jordan Phillips and drafted Leki Fotu and Rashard Lawrence, it was going to be hard for him to make the team.

Jones and Winslow never really had a shot at the roster.

That leaves 16 cuts the Cardinals will need to make by Saturday at 1 p.m. Arizona time.

After final cuts are made, they will be able to assemble a 16-player practice squad.

5 2019 Cardinals rookies whose 2020 roles probably won’t change

While they might develop, the situations ahead of them probably will limit their role next season.

Several of the Arizona Cardinals’ rookies in 2019 should have bigger roles in 2020. Others aren’t likely to. Here are the rookies whose roles likely won’t increase much in their second season.

S Deionte Thompson

Joe Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports

Thompson split time on the field with fellow rookie Jalen Thompson after D.J. Swearinger was cut. However, his playing time disappeared with the emergence of Jalen. With Budda Baker already a Pro Bowler and with the emergence of Jalen and the possibility of the team adding a veteran at the position, Deionte probably won’t be more than a special teamer in 2020 unless there is an injury or he makes huge strides.
