Former Alabama DB added to Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad

The Jacksonville Jaguars recently added former Alabama safety Deionte Thompson to their practice squad.

Former Alabama defensive back Deionte Thompson was signed to the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad on Tuesday. Thompson last played for the Arizona Cardinals.

As a safety at Alabama, Thompson tallied 112 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and three interceptions. The Texas native recorded 78 of the 112 tackles during his redshirt-junior season in 2018. Soon after, he would forgo his senior season and declare for the 2019 NFL Draft.

He went on to be drafted in the fifth round by the Cardinals. Thompson went on to spend four seasons with the organization before being waived in September.

Now, Thompson has found himself a new home with an opportunity to work his way up to the Jaguars’ active roster.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Thompson’s professional career as well as other former Alabama players in the NFL.

Jaguars sign former Cardinals S Deionte Thompson to practice squad

The Jaguars filled the empty spot on their practice squad with a veteran safety.

A day after the Tennessee Titans scooped up rookie safety Josh Thompson from the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad, the Jaguars replaced him on the roster with former Arizona Cardinals safety Deionte Thompson.

Deionte Thompson, 25, was the Cardinals’ fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and started six games in his first two seasons while contributing most on special teams. After making Arizona’s 53-man roster again this season, Thompson was waived by the team near the end of September.

In three games this season, Thompson played only six defensive snaps and 49 on special teams.

Thompson has recorded 54 career tackles with two quarterback hits and three passes defended. Following the addition of Thompson, the Jaguars practice squad is as follows:

  • WR Kevin Austin Jr.
  • OLB Rashod Berry
  • OT Coy Cronk
  • CB Gregory Junior
  • DL Jeremiah Ledbetter
  • K James McCourt
  • WR Jaylon Moore
  • OL Jimmy Murray
  • S Ayo Oyelola
  • QB E.J. Perry
  • TE Gerrit Prince
  • RB Mekhi Sargent
  • LB Ty Summers
  • DT Nick Thurman
  • S Deionte Thompson
  • OL Darryl Williams
  • WR Seth Williams

Cardinals bring in S Chris Banjo for visit; Deionte Thompson clears waivers

We could be seeing a transaction or two coming at the safety position.

The Arizona Cardinals did not announce any roster moves Wednesday but at least one could be coming Thursday.

Safety Deionte Thompson, waived on Tuesday to make room for rookie linebacker Jesse Luketa, officially cleared waivers, meaning that, if the Cardinals wan him on the practice squad as depth at safety, they now can do that.

If that does not happen, we might see another signing. According to the NFL transaction report Wednesday, safety Chris Banjo had a visit with the Cardinals.

Banjo played for Arizona from 2019-2021, mostly on special teams.

It is quite possible we will see an announcement where he is signed to the practice squad and then he is elevated for the game on Sunday to play special teams and be depth behind starters Budda Baker and Jalen Thompson.

Banjo, now 32 years old, entered the league in 2013 as an undrafted rookie out of SMU. He has played for the Packers, Saints and Cardinals. In three seasons for the Cardinals, he appeared in 42 games, starting four. He had 67 tackles and a pass breakup.

Cardinals promote LB Jesse Luketa, release S Deionte Thompson

The Cardinals now have seven outside linebackers on the roster and only two safeties.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a couple of roster moves that will be a bit of a surprise. They released safety Deionte Thompson and signed rookie linebacker Jesse Luketa from the practice squad to the active roster.

It is surprising because it leaves the Cardinals with only two safeties on the roster and gives them seven outside linebackers.

The move could be for special teams but perhaps there is an injury to someone in the outside linebacker room.

With only two safeties on the roster, if Thompson clears waivers and is re-signed to the practice squad, he could be elevated to the active roster for the game this week.

Luketa was a seventh-round pick out of Penn State by the Cardinals this year. He stood out in the preseason and the team wanted to keep him on the active roster but didn’t have the numbers with some of the injuries they had.

Thompson, drafted in the fifth round in 2019, had been with the Cardinals for four seasons.

Check out who has worn No. 22 for the Cardinals over the years.

The Arizona Cardinals are done with training camp and will play their second preseason game of the year Sunday night. As of today, a fine Saturday, they are 22 days away from football that counts in the standings.

Cardinals hurting at safety with recent injuries

The Cardinals entered Friday’s preseason game with three safeties. A fourth got hurt at the end of the game.

The Arizona Cardinals had a number of players who were not in the lineup at all in their second preseason game, a 17-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

They played their starters but for only a couple of series defensively, but safety Jalen Thompson continued playing after the starters left.

At first, it looked like it would be because he could use preseason reps. He didn’t get an offseason when he was selected in the supplemental draft in 2019 and last year no one had an offseason. Then, during the regular season, Thompson missed most of the year with a bad ankle.

However, upon asking Kliff Kingsbury after the game about Thompson’s playing time, while he indicated Thompson could use the work, his snap count had nothing to do with that. It was because they “were down three safeties.”

Chris Banjo, Deionte Thompson and rookie James Wiggins all did not play on Friday. Banjo suffered a hamstring injury in the preseason opener but Thompson’s and Wiggins’ injuries are not known.

A fourth safety, Shawn Williams, left the game late in the fourth quarter with an injury, forcing the Cardinals to use back-of-the-roster cornerback Picasso Nelson at safety to finish the game.

The Cardinals do need to make five more cuts by Tuesday, but if they only have three healthy safeties — Budda Baker, Jalen Thompson and Charkles Washington — we can expect to see them sign one or two at the start of next week.

These Cardinals’ roles, roster spots in danger after NFL draft

The Cardinals’ draft class could contribute early and will squeeze other players’ playing time or replace them on the roster.

The Arizona Cardinals added seven players in the 2021 NFL draft last month. Some of the players will be expected to contribute immediately. As a result, some older players are in danger of losing playing time while others’ roster spots are far from certain.

Who are the players whose roles or roster spots are now in danger with this draft class?

Deionte Thompson activated from COVID list

Only Larry Fitzgerald remains on the list.

The Arizona Cardinals got another player back on Thursday. The team announced that safety Deionte Thompson was reinstated to the active roster from the COVID-19 reserve. He was placed on the list last week.

The Cardinals had three players on the list last week — Thompson, receiver Trent Sherfield and receiver Larry Fitzgerald.

Sherfield was reactivated earlier this week.

That only leaves Fitzgerald, who reportedly contracted the virus, on the list. Because of when he was added to the list last week, it seems very likely he will miss Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Thompson’s return will be big for the safety room. Jalen Thompson is recovering from an ankle injury and Charles Washington is dealing with a groin injury. While he did not miss the game on Sunday, he was not 100% and only Budda Baker and Chris Banjo were healthy.

S Deionte Thompson is latest Cardinals player to land on COVID list

He is the fourth Cardinals player to land on the list this season.

The Arizona Cardinals announced that safety Deionte Thompson has been placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. He is the fourth player to land on this list this season.

This reserve list category was created for a player with a positive test for COVID-19 or who has been quarantined after having been in close contact with an infected person or persons. If a player falls into either of these categories, his club is required to immediately place the player on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Early in the season, receiver KeeSean Johnson landed on the list. More recently, linebacker Devon Kennard and cornerback Byron Murphy both tested positive for the virus and landed on the list.

Thompson will likely miss this week’s game and, depending on whether he actually has the virus and has symptoms, he could miss the game next week.

With Jalen Thompson dealing with an ankle injury again, the Cardinals are again thin at safety. Budda Baker are the only two healthy players, as Charles Washington is recovering from a groin injury as well.

Deionte Thompson, Curtis Riley to start at safety for Cardinals

T.J. Ward has not been on the team long enough to contribute.

The Arizona Cardinals will be without starting safeties Budda Baker and Jalen Thompson this weekend against the Carolina Panthers. Baker had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his thumb. Thompson is on injured reserve currently with an ankle in injury. He is not eligible to come off until next week.

Chris Banjo, who started in place of Thompson the last two games, is also injured. He is not expected to play on Sunday.

That means two new starters. Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph told reporters on Friday it would be Deionte Thompson and Curtis Riley. Thompson is in his second season and Riley was signed last month.

“We feel good about that,” he said. “We have certain packages were we can put other guys at similar positions, but right now we feel very comfortable with those two guys who have been in camp with us and have run this system.”

Earlier in the week, Kliff Kingsbury said it was possible that rookie linebacker Isaiah Simmons could play some safety, as he played the position in college.

Joseph would not say but Simmons very well could be one of the “other guys” he referred to.

The team added veteran T.J. Ward to the practice squad. Joseph said he wouldn’t be ready to play.

So against Carolina, they will roll with Thompson and Riley and publicly are confident.

“I think we are in good shape at safety.”

We will find out if that is actually the case.
