2024 NFL draft: Grading Chargers’ Day 2 picks

The Chargers nailed the second day of the 2024 NFL draft.

The Chargers arrived at Day 2 with questions about how they would fill some of their more immediate needs on the roster after using the first-round pick on Joe Alt. Wide receiver, linebacker, cornerback, defensive tackle and running back stood out as a few of the key positions that could be addressed at some point.

First, Los Angeles decided to trade up with the Patriots for Ladd McConkey out of Georgia. The Chargers stuck pretty closely to the value on the consensus board here, and the best player available outside of Adonai Mitchell fell due to some medicals. Cooper DeJean notably was the highest-graded player available, but that also could be a situation where the Chargers view him as a safety instead of a cornerback.

The trade-up was pretty good value for LA. They essentially swapped fourth and fifth-rounders to move up three spots without giving up capital. Moving up while keeping all nine of his selections (and future picks) is a pretty good move for Joe Hortiz in and of itself.

McConkey is a natural pick for an offense that just lost its’ best route-running technician. On his reception perception profile, you’ll see a lot of routes in green:

McConkey also tested really well at the combine with a 4.39 40 time. That shows up on his film as well with plenty of plays generating yards after the catch. He also had a lower drop rate than even Marvin Harrison Jr. last year as an incredibly efficient player himself.

There will be questions about McConkey’s size, but they’re probably a little overstated. He obviously is not going to be a great contested catch threat at any point in his career, but with the way the board was breaking on day two, which other receiver would’ve been?

After the Keenan Allen trade, the Chargers’ receiver room was dying for some route-running finesse and McConkey addressed it big time.

In round three, the Chargers got one of “Jim Harbaugh’s boys” as it was said on the broadcast with Junior Colson. Colson was the best coverage linebacker of this draft and maybe one of two linebackers who could be an impact starter immediately. Some analysts had him a sneaky candidate for a round one or early round two selection. LA snagging him at pick 69 value-wise was pretty solid relative to the consensus boards.

I’ve written about it before whenever I took Colson in mock drafts this year, but it just made too much sense. The Chargers are getting a cerebral player very familiar with Jesse Minter’s defensive scheme. While Derwin James has been mentioned as a green dot signal caller candidate, Colson also profiles as a guy who could potentially take that responsibility.

In addition to coverage skills, Colson also graded out as PFF’s best pass-rushing linebacker of the class. He’s a very solid tackler, too, with a career miss rate in college of around six percent. In 2023, he was below five percent missed tackle %.

Ultimately, the Chargers stuck pretty close to consensus value and got two athletic immediate impact players at key positions. Hard to hate on it, especially after not losing much value in trading up for McConkey.

Day 2 grade: A-

2024 NFL draft: Steelers select WR Roman Wilson in third round

The Steelers filled a huge need at receiver in the third round.

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to use the 2024 NFL draft to load up on the offensive side of the football. After using the first two picks on projected starting offensive linemen, Pittsburgh turned around and got themselves a starting wide receiver in former Michigan wide receiver Roman Wilson with the No. 84 pick overall.

Wilson averaged 16.4 yards per catch in 2023 on a Michigan team that was very run-heavy. He was the favorite target of J.J. McCarthy and it was because he knows how to get open and he never drops the football.

On the Steelers Wilson is an easy pick to plug in as the starting slot wide receiver but we think he has the potential to start on the outside and help pull deep coverage away from George Pickens with that 4.39-second 40 speed.

2024 NFL draft: Watch highlights of new Chargers LB Junior Colson

To get familiar with the newest member of the Chargers, here are some highlights of Junior Colson.

The Chargers addressed the linebacker position with the selection of Junior Colson in the third round.

Los Angeles needed more playmakers in the middle of the defense, and the addition of Colson provides it with an athletic backer with good speed to make plays in open space and coverage skills.

To get familiar with the newest member of the Bolts, here are some highlights of Colson.

Day One of the 2024 NFL draft is in the books, and it was a historic night. Six quarterbacks were selected in the first 12 picks, and 23 offensive players were selected, the most ever.

Baltimore was able to land one of the top cornerbacks on the board without trading up.

Rounds two and three will play out on Friday night, and the Eagles will have two picks in Round 2 and none in Round 3.

Here is our list of the best players on the board during day two of the NFL draft.

Notre Dame receiver target Micah Gilbert announces commitment date

Here’s hoping the crystal ball isn’t lying.

[autotag]Cam Williams[/autotag] is one of the biggest receiver recruits Notre Dame has landed in recent years. But so far, he’s the Irish’s only pure receiver commit in the the 2024 recruiting class. That might change next week as receiver target Micah Gilbert has announced May 2 as the day he will make his college decision. The announcement will take place live on the 247Sports YouTube channel.

All signs point to Gilbert a Charlotte, North Carolina native, picking Notre Dame after he was recruited by [autotag]Gerad Parker[/autotag] and [autotag]Chansi Stuckey[/autotag]. Duke and North Carolina figure to be the biggest threat to the Irish, though that also could be because he’s from Charlotte. The other schools in the mix for the four-star recruit are South Carolina, Michigan, Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech.

Gilbert would be a perfect complimentary piece to Williams, and here’s hoping he feels the same way. We all will find out the answer to that question really soon.

NFL draft rumor: Chargers ‘will do what it takes’ to select Blake Corum

The Chargers could have their eyes set on the productive running back from Michigan.

There are a handful of Jim Harbaugh’s former Michigan players who could appeal to him when the Chargers are on the clock, but he could have his eyes set on one specific player.

According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, it is believed that Harbaugh is expected to target running back Blake Corum.

“No running backs are expected to go in the first round, and there’s a great variety of opinion on which one will be the first back selected this year,” Graziano said.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”5375″ ]

“… I’ve spoken to scouts from multiple teams who think Michigan’s Blake Corum might be the best of the bunch and believe Jim Harbaugh’s Chargers will do what it takes to make sure he’s reunited with his college coach.”

Corum was productive for the Wolverines this past season, rushing for 1,245 yards and a program-record 27 touchdowns en route to the school’s national title. He finished his collegiate career with 58 rushing scores.

Corum isn’t the youngest player, set to be 24 this upcoming season and already has plenty of mileage used. But he has the patience, vision, and quickness to be an effective back in the NFL.

Los Angeles signed Gus Edwards and recently, JK Dobbins. But as they look to run the ball at a high level under offensive coordinator Greg Roman, the Chargers might feel that Corum is the final piece to the puzzle.

Check it out: Jim Harbaugh gets tattoo in honor of Michigan’s National Championship

Jim Harbaugh stuck to his word.

Last fall, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh made a promise to get a tattoo if his former team, Michigan, went all the way.

“If we go undefeated, I’m going to get a 15-0 tattoo,” Harbaugh said via the Inside Michigan Football radio show.

The tattoo includes the school’s “M” logo with 15-0 beneath.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”5375″ ]

Tattoo artist Stephen Bateman shared a post on Instagram featuring Harbaugh and his new ink with the caption: “Go Blue! 15-0. Thanks, Jim Harbaugh, for having me out!!” Bateman wrote.

The Wolverines won the national championship in January, defeating the Washington Huskies.

The victory marked Michigan’s first undefeated season since the school won its previous title two and a half decades ago.

Harbaugh will have a lasting reminder of his perfect season at Michigan with his new ink.

The question remains if Harbaugh will now vow to get a lightning bolt as his next tattoo if the Chargers get a ring.

Former Notre Dame commitment to transfer from Michigan

Should Notre Dame circle back here?

Less than a week after being a part of Michigan‘s first national championship team since 1997, a former Notre Dame commitment is entering the transfer portal.

[autotag]Amorion Walker[/autotag] was a Notre Dame commitment in the 2022 recruiting class where he was set to play wide receiver.  He flipped his commitment to Michigan late in the process and ultimately switched to cornerback.

Walker battled an undisclosed injury this year and didn’t see the field much for the Wolverines, playing in just five games.

Walker starred at Ponchatoula High School in Louisiana before heading to the Midwest for college.

Will Notre Dame circle back here?  With the switch to defensive back I wouldn’t assume so but certainly worth at least keeping an eye on.

4-star guard Justin Pippen, son of Scottie, commits to Michigan

Justin Pippen, the son of NBA legend Scottie Pippen, has committed to the Michigan Wolverine’s men’s basketball team.

Justin Pippen, the star guard of prestigious Sierra Canyon High School (Chatsworth, Calif.) and son of NBA legend Scottie Pippen, announced on Friday that he has committed to the University of Michigan.

The four-star guard chose the Wolverines over the other six universities that offered him, including Stanford, Cal, Georgia Tech, and Texas A&M. He was named to the Los Angeles Daily News All-CIF Open Division team this year after helping the Trailblazers go 26-4.

Ranked as the No. 62 player on the 247Sports list and No. 101 on the composite ranking, Pippen had a good assist-to-turnover ratio and a bundle of steals this season, according to On3. The outlet’s reporter Collin Ginnan wrote:

“The eye test will show you a guard with good size, who is comfortable with the ball in his hands and has no trouble touching the paint. He plays aggressively, and without question deserves to be in the 2024 On3 150. Currently, he is a 6-foot-3 combo guard who needs to continue developing his scoring efficiency. That put him as a high three-star, at No. 115 in this update.”

Pippen is a very late commitment for the class of 2024, but it was much-needed for Michigan, which only had received the commitment of three-star point guard Durral Brooks prior to Pippen’s announcement.

Since appearing in the Elite Eight in 2021 and the Sweet Sixteen in 2022, the Wolverines have been unable to return to the NCAA tournament over the last two seasons. This past year, they posted a record of 8-24.

The program is hoping Pippen can help prop them up in the coming years.

Notre Dame to host Michigan transfer forward Terrance Williams II

Hope he comes to the Irish.

With former Princeton guard [autotag]Matt Allocco[/autotag] now at Notre Dame, the Irish have two scholarships available for transfers. It’s hard to say at this point who will get those scholarships. One possibility is former Michigan forward Terrance Williams II, who has one year of eligibility remaining.

The Irish are set to host Williams next week. Like Allocco, this would be a nice get for the program. Last season, Williams more than doubled his scoring average from the season before by putting up 12.4 points a game. He also averaged a career high 1.5 assists a game. During the 2022-23 season, his 8.8 rebounds a game ranked among the best in the Big Ten.

It will take a little time before the Irish can develop more of their own scorers from within. Until that time, high-scoring veterans from the transfer portal will do. Hopefully though, more homegrown talent will become the norm before too long.
