Notre Dame stagnant in latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Not too many changes at the top of the updated Coaches Poll

Another week of college football another week of upsets and of course movement in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll. The Irish were able to hold off Purdue in the fourth quarter, notching their third win of the season.

Virginia Tech, who the Irish play in three weeks, lost of the road and fell from No. 15 to unranked. Next weeks opponent Wisconsin had the week off, while the middle game of the upcoming difficult stretch saw Cincinnati stave off a solid Indiana team.

Around the country, Fresno State upset UCLA late last night, while Michigan State went into Coral Gables and handily defeated Miami, FL. The Spartans jumped into the poll at No. 21.

Notre Dame is outside 247Sports Top-10 in team talent composite rankings

This is doesn’t account for everything that goes into a winning football team

Unfortunately in some sports, it’s not about the X’s and O‘s, it’s about the Jimmy’s and Joe’s. With football, that’s exactly that case, the more talent a team has, the better depth and assurances that when an inevitable injury happens, there’s not a huge drop off.

Today, 247Sports released their 2021 team talent composite rankings and Notre Dame was just outside the Top-10, at 12th overall. All that his accounts for is recruiting success, which is why you see teams like Texas and Miami, FL close to the Irish.

The Longhorns have just one 10-win season since 2010, which means they’ve severely underperformed according to this metric. The Hurricanes have had even less on-field success, having just one 10-win season since 2004.

This metric is nice to look at, but it doesn’t account for any team’s ability to develop talent, something that Notre Dame has clearly shown that they’re one of the best in the country at doing. It is an interesting list to look at but it obviously does not tell the whole story for multiple programs.

Is the Notre Dame vs FSU ’21 opener intriguing? One outlets thinks so

What opening games are you excited to see?

As we found out yesterday that the Irish opener will be in prime time, but how does it stack up against the rest of the slate?

[lawrence-related id=28581]

As spring ball has finished and all of college footballs thoughts look ahead to week 1, 247Sports has ranked the most intriguing games during the opening weekend. Brad Crawford ranked 10 of the most interesting games and the Irish visiting the Seminoles was the sixth best matchup according to him.

What is interesting was the comment that Crawford pulled from Kenny Dillingham, Florida State’s offensive coordinator. He said “that home-field advantage, we’re telling every top prospect that we have that’s not making a decision early to official visit Notre Dame. Why? Because there should be no other stadium in America that has a better game-day feel than right here.” Sure, coach, whatever you say.

[lawrence-related id=28531]

Back to the rankings of week 1, remember this is about intrigue, not about the best matchup. If you’re just looking at that, the Irish opener is on par with Miami, FL taking on Alabama in Atlanta and Penn State visiting Wisconsin. It should be an extremely exciting weekend, as college football will get closer to what we have come to love with fans in the stands and the Irish taking on FSU.

The ‘transfer toilet’ is how one ACC coach views the portal

Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson had some interesting words when asked about the NCAA transfer portal.

Since the inception of the NCAA’s transfer portal in October of 2018, many players have enter their name in. Over 1,000 student-athletes did so in it’s first year of existence, with many more following the path the past two years.

In an interview with the Winston-Salem Journal, Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson was overtly critical of the “transfer toilet” as he so eloquently called it. The topic was breached when John Dell asked about his former running back Kenneth Walker, entering the portal and subsequently committing to Michigan State.

“The joke in the ACC room is that sometimes we call it almost like the transfer toilet. There are players that go in there, and you never see or hear from them again. This whole idea there’s a portal and a one-time transfer (rule) and isn’t this freedom great? But you are still only allowed to have 85 scholarships, and you can still sign only 25 players a year. So you have all these players going in there thinking they can go anywhere and play. There are still scholarship limits,” explained Clawson.

He went ever further saying “a lot of those players go into the portal not being informed of the national dynamics of that portal, that there are 65 Power Five programs,” going back into his comments about scholarship limits.

Clawson does have some solid points, but transfers have worked for many players including Notre Dame’s Ben Skowronek (although a different case as a graduate transfer) and former Irish now Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec. It hasn’t worked for many also, citing Miami’s Tate Martell.

The argument here is that if coaches are allowed to leave freely, so should players and it’s a solid point, but to a degree. Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh thinks players should be allowed to have one free transfer, where they wouldn’t have to wait for the NCAA to make a ruling on being eligible immediately.

Cases like Martell’s don’t always makes sense, as he claimed due to Urban Meyer leaving after his second season that he should be eligible right away at Miami, FL. They granted it to him but said no to Luke Ford. The Illinois native played his first year at Georgia, but he wanted his sick grandfather to see him play. The NCAA denied his request, his grandfather passing away during his season where he had to sit out a year.

The “transfer toilet” needs more rules, the NCAA must have better criteria as to what grants a player immediate eligibility and what doesn’t. This year has obviously been different, with most transfers being granted eligibility right away.

Either way, Clawson got our attention comparing the transfer portal to a toilet bowl.

Notre Dame falls in final Amway Coaches Poll

The final Amway Coaches Poll sees Notre Dame drop, but still have end up with a very high ranking.

With the bowl season officially concluding last night and Alabama being crowned champion once again for the sixth time in the last 12 years, the coaches had a chance to examine what they saw. The final Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports saw the Irish drop one spot from No. 4 to No. 5.

It was obvious that the loss to Alabama made in impact on them, but in reality it shouldn’t have. Although Notre Dame only managed to score 14 points against the eventual national champions, they held them to their lowest point total of the season, 31.

Throughout the season, Brian Kelly’s team never fell out of the top 10, with their highest rating being No. 2 and lowest was No. 10. A final record of 10-2 showed they were one of the best teams in the country.

Alabama rightfully received every single 1st place vote, while their combatants in the title game, Ohio State finished second. Clemson was third and Texas A&M rounded out the top 5.

Notre Dame still sitting pretty in latest Amway Coaches Poll

Even with a bye week, Notre Dame doesn’t lose ground on No. 1 Alabama.

It was a week where there wasn’t much movement at all inside the top 10, just Indiana fell out after falling to Ohio State in a thrilling 45-38 loss, although they didn’t fall far, just two spots to No. 12.

The top 5 teams remained the same, Alabama still No. 1 with the Irish, Ohio State, Clemson and Florida rounding out to the top 5. The biggest riser this week was Northwestern, as they defeated Wisconsin at home and they look like they’re they favorites to win the Big Ten West.

The Badgers and Oklahoma State both took big hits to their rankings, they each fell 8 spots after their respective losses.

Around the ACC, North Carolina State defeated formerly No. 22 Liberty, as the loss knocked them out of the Coaches Poll entirely. That was it for the conference’s ranked games, as No. 4 Clemson vs. Florida State and No. 9 Miami, FL vs. Georgia Tech were both postponed this weekend. No. 23 North Carolina, like Notre Dame, had a bye this weekend.

Is it already Separation Saturday for College Football?

Three undefeated matchups (Miami at Clemson, Tennessee at Georgia and Virginia Tech at North Carolina) are on deck for college football.

When looking at this weekends games, there are four Top 25 matchups, with the biggest game being the ACC contest that has No. 1 Clemson hosting No. 7 Miami. It is obviously a big weekend, and Brandon Marcello of 247Sports is already calling it Separation Saturday.

Does this hold weight? Is this really when the top teams will make their moves? How can this be when two of the five power conference’s haven’t even started playing football yet?

Three of the four matchups will have one of the teams falling form the ranks of the unbeaten, Virginia at North Carolina and Tennessee at Florida along with the Tigers and Hurricanes. The other Top 25 matchup has one loss Texas A&M hosting Georgia.

Can this really be the weekend where teams start to make their moves to gain entry into the College Football Playoffs? Certainly it can, but this year is going to be significantly different than previous seasons. Teams won’t have as many data points, the CFP committee has already adjusted their schedule and undoubtedly will ranks teams differently due to circumstances.

Could a loss in this week for the unbeatens knock them out of CFP consideration? I tend to think the answer is no. Say for instance, Miami beats Clemson, would the Tigers, who have made the CFP every year except it’s first year, be out of consideration. I’d say no, not at all. Same for Florida if Tennessee was to upset them this weekend.

I agree with Marcello that this is a big weekend, but will it be the “Separation Saturday” he claims? It’s way to early to anoint this weekend that title.
