Unfortunately in some sports, it’s not about the X’s and O‘s, it’s about the Jimmy’s and Joe’s. With football, that’s exactly that case, the more talent a team has, the better depth and assurances that when an inevitable injury happens, there’s not a huge drop off.
Today, 247Sports released their 2021 team talent composite rankings and Notre Dame was just outside the Top-10, at 12th overall. All that his accounts for is recruiting success, which is why you see teams like Texas and Miami, FL close to the Irish.
The Longhorns have just one 10-win season since 2010, which means they’ve severely underperformed according to this metric. The Hurricanes have had even less on-field success, having just one 10-win season since 2004.
This metric is nice to look at, but it doesn’t account for any team’s ability to develop talent, something that Notre Dame has clearly shown that they’re one of the best in the country at doing. It is an interesting list to look at but it obviously does not tell the whole story for multiple programs.
