Ranking the top 10 quarterbacks in the Big 12 during the 2022 season

Breaking down Big 12 quarterback rankings based on their passing grades through the 2022 college football regular season.

The Big 12 Conference has been known for its passing offenses over the better part of the last two decades.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders, Oklahoma Sooners, and Oklahoma State Cowboys have led the way with such passers as Landry Jones, Graham Harrell, and Mason Rudolph. The three are among the top four passers in the conference’s history. The Red Raiders produced three of the top 10 passers, while Oklahoma and Texas have produced two apiece.

With the 2022 college football regular season in the history books, Sooners Wire is diving into the numbers for the quarterbacks. Which passer from each Big 12 team led the way and where do they rank among their peers?

We used PFF’s passing grades to rank the signal callers, each quarterback needed at least 150 dropbacks to qualify.

4-Down Territory: Heisman snubs, worst trades ever, revenge games, Brock Purdy

Heisman snubs, the NFL’s worst trades ever, revenge games, and Brock Purdy! Doug Farrar and Luke Easterling have it all on this week’s “4-Down Territory.”

Every week in “4-Down Territory,” Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar and Luke Easterling of Bucs Wire and Draft Wire go over the things you need to know about, and the things you need to watch, in the NFL right now. With Week 13 of the 2022 NFL season in the books, and the Heisman Trophy finalists announced, there was a lot to cover!

This week, Doug and Luke discuss:

  1. USC quarterback Caleb Williams, TCU quarterback Max Duggan, Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud, and Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett III were announced as the finalists for the 2022 Heisman Trophy. With all due respect to those four players, what was the most egregious Heisman snub this year?
  2. The Russell Wilson trade is in danger of becoming the worst trade in NFL history — at least, for the Denver Broncos. At this point though, what has been the worst deal in the annals of pro football?
  3. A.J. Brown of the Philadelphia Eagles and Bobby Wagner of the Los Angeles Rams had compelling revenge games on Sunday against their former teams, the Tennessee Titans and the Seattle Seahawks. Which player’s revenge game was more compelling?
  4. Do the San Francisco 49ers still have a Super Bowl shot with rookie “Mr. Irrelevant” quarterback Brock Purdy under center?

What the Heisman Trophy voters got wrong this time around

Caleb Williams, Max Duggan, Stetson Bennett III, and C.J. Stroud are your 2022 Heisman Trophy finalists. Here’s what the voters missed.

Before we get into how the voters for the Heisman Trophy finalists got wrong, we can say that the four finalists for the award, the winner of which will be revealed on Saturday, December 10, we want to make clear that we are not casting aspersions on any of the four players who did make the cut. USC quarterback Caleb Williams, TCU quarterback Max Duggan, Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud, and Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett III all have certain attributes that make them worthy.

That’s not what we’re saying here. What we are saying is that there were other players who were as deserving — or more deserving — who didn’t make the cut, and that’s what we’re left to deal with. And it speaks to larger issues with the process.

Marquee players who are at times helped to a disproportionate degree by those around them are given credit for things that aren’t really theirs to own. The vote should be held after the end of the playoffs, so that we really know who the biggest dogs are. And it absolutely does not matter how great a defensive player you are. You are not going to win the Heisman on defense alone. Unless you’re a three-way superstar like Michigan defensive back Charles Woodson, who got the award in 1997 because he also balled out on offense and special teams, you might as well just wait for the money you’re going to get in the draft.

So. let’s get into what the Heisman voters got wrong this time around.

2022 Heisman finalists (Stetson Bennett, really?): Here’s who should win CFB’s top individual prize

Not a quarterback award, huh?

We now know the four Heisman Trophy finalists who will travel to New York City next weekend with hopes of receiving the most prestigious individual award in college football.

The Heisman has been criticized for having a bias toward quarterbacks, and this year’s group certainly does nothing to dissuade those aspersions. All four of this year’s finalists are signal-callers: USC’s Caleb Williams, Ohio State’s CJ Stroud, TCU’s Max Duggan and Georgia’s Stetson Bennett.

As you’ll soon see, one of these is not quite like the others. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Here’s a recap of how each of these four got here (with their odds to win the award).

All odds and ends via BetMGM.

Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud heads back to New York as Heisman finalist

Back-to-back years for Stroud

This should come as no surprise but Buckeye quarterback [autotag]C.J. Stroud[/autotag] will make a return trip to New York City for a second consecutive year as a Heisman Trophy finalist. All four finalist are quarterbacks, with Georgia’s [autotag]Stetson Bennett[/autotag], TCU’s [autotag]Max Duggan[/autotag], and USC’s [autotag]Caleb Williams[/autotag] who all have a chance to join a few in a select fraternity.

[autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] has a long history with the trophy, tying [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] for most winners of all time with seven. In the past five years, Stroud along with [autotag]Justin Fields[/autotag], [autotag]Chase Young[/autotag], and the late [autotag]Dwayne Haskins[/autotag] all have been finalists. The last Buckeye winner was in 2006, when quarterback Troy Smith won.

Stroud completed 66.2% of his attempts for 3,340 yards with 37 touchdowns and only six interceptions so far this season. He was also named the Big Ten’s QB of and Offensive Player of the Year. Stroud’s numbers were down from last year but still enough for him to be invited to the ceremony. Tune in this Saturday, December 10, to see who takes home the trophy this year.

Caleb Williams is named a Heisman Trophy finalist; will go to New York this Saturday, Dec. 10

The 2022 #HeismanTrophy Ceremony is Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Downtown Athletic Club in New York. 8 Eastern, 5 Pacific, on ESPN. #USC #Heisman

It is Heisman Trophy Week, and it’s always an especially big week for the players who are selected to attend the Heisman Trophy Award Ceremony at the Downtown Athletic Club in New York. It’s also a big week for the schools those players represent.

The University of Southern California is likely to welcome its eighth Heisman Trophy winner to the Heisman fraternity on Saturday, Dec. 10. Quarterback Caleb Williams is the clear favorite to win the award. He would join seven previous Heisman Trophy winners at USC. He would also be a Heisman winner as a sophomore, with at least one more year to make a run at the trophy. Alabama quarterback Bryce Young won the 2021 Heisman and came back this year, trying to become just the second man to win back-to-back Heismans. The only man to ever do it: Archie Griffin of Ohio State in 1974 and 1975.

Let’s tell you about Caleb Williams and the men who will join him at the Heisman ceremony, plus a few notable snubs for the award presentation:

Texas RB Bijan Robinson misses out on Heisman invite

Bijan Robinson was snubbed of a Heisman finalist spot.

Texas superstar running back Bijan Robinson will not be making the trip to New York for the Heisman ceremony.

The Heisman Trophy Award finalists were announced on Monday Night, with Robinson missing the cut. The four players in contention for college football’s most prestigious award are all quarterbacks.

  • Stetson Bennett (Georgia)
  • Max Duggan (TCU)
  • C.J. Stroud (Ohio State)
  • Caleb Williams (USC)

USC’s Caleb Williams is the heavy favorite to take home the award after his magnificent season for the Trojans.

While it is a disappointment Bijan Robinson did not make the list, he is still up for the Doak Walker Award, granted to the best running back in the nation every year.

Steve Sarkisian stated he believes Robinson would be a sure-fire Heisman finalist if Texas had won a couple more games this season.

Max Duggan vs. Caleb Williams: Who deserves the Heisman Trophy?

USC’s Caleb Williams and TCU’s Max Duggan have each had Heisman-worth campaigns

There have been many great players in 2022. Two have moved ahead of the rest in the battle for the Heisman Trophy, USC’s Caleb Williams and TCU’s Max Duggan.

Each had a chance to lock up the prestigious award in conference championship games but both the Trojans and Horned Frogs lost.

Williams was injured and hobbled in the loss to Utah.

Duggan put forth an incredible effort against Kansas State, almost singlehandedly willing the Horned Frogs to victory.

So how does this Heisman battle stack up?

Duggan: 3,321 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions. He also rushed for 394 yards and 5 TDs (remember in college football, sacks count against quarterback rushing yards for some reason).

Williams: 4,075 passing yards, 37 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions. He had 372 rushing yards and 10 TDs on the ground.

USC finished 11-2 while TCU is 12-1.

Big things were expected from Williams after he transferred to USC from Oklahoma. The same could not be said of Duggan and the Horned Frogs.

It will have no impact on the Heisman voting, which is based on the 2022 season but they faced each other last year.

Williams and Oklahoma downed Duggan and TCU, 52-31.

Each threw 4 TD passes in that Big 12 contest.

The award will be announced on December 10.

Both are finalists for the Davey O’Brien Award, given to the nation’s top QB.

Max Duggan doing it all as TCU rallies to tie Kansas State

Max Duggan is doing everything to try and save TCU’s undefeated season

Just call Max Duggan Commander Comeback.

The TCU quarterback led another rally on Saturday, this one in the Big 12 Championship Game in Texas, and the Horned Frogs overcame an 11-point deficit to tie Kansas State at 28 with less than 2 minutes left.

Duggan has thrown for more than 250 yards and rushed for over 100.

He threw a TD pass on the game-tying drive but it was waved off for offensive pass interference.

He took matters into his own legs with a 40-yard run and an 8-yarder for the score to make it 28-26.

Duggan then completed a pass for a 2-point conversion and the game was tied.

All that was at stake was TCU’s undefeated season and its status with the CFP playoff committee.

Oh, and don’t forget Duggan is in the Heisman race, too.

Heisman Trophy Candidates. Can ANYONE Beat Caleb Williams?

Who are the top candidates still in the mix for the 2022 Heisman Trophy race? Are there ANY candidates worthy other than Caleb Williams?

Who’s in the hunt for the 2022 Heisman Trophy? Are there any other candidates than Caleb Williams now?

Last year at this time we still didn’t really know who the Heisman finalists were, much less the possible winner.

Alabama QB Bryce Young put together a drive for the ages to get by Auburn, but whatever – his candidacy was about to run into a hard wall with Georgia coming up next.

And then he threw for 421 yards and three touchdowns in the 41-24 SEC Championship win. That made it easy, and it’s simple this year, too, unless Caleb Williams has a disastrous day against Utah in the Pac-12 Championship.

Full disclosure, I’m a Heisman voter and can’t reveal my vote, preferences, or potential ideas for my ballot under penalty of death, or something far, far worse – like being forced to watch some sort of country music holiday special. With that said …

Can anyone provide any sort of a challenge to Williams?

The USC star did what he had to against Notre Dame, taking the Carson Palmer 2002 Heisman playbook and stepping up when the world was watching. However, Palmer didn’t have to play in a Pac-12 Championship with a College Football Playoff spot on the line.

There might be an opportunity for someone other than Williams to take the cheese with one monster performance this weekend.

Here are the five top realistic candidates for the 2022 Heisman Trophy.

Player(s) of Week 13

RB Donovan Edwards & QB JJ McCarthy, Michigan
But … but … Blake Corum?

After a week of speculation about whether or not Corum could play against Ohio State, he only ran twice for six yards. Edwards stepped up behind a great day from the Michigan offensive line, running 22 times for 216 yards and two scores. McCarthy ran six times for 27 yard and a score, and he hit half his passes for 263 yards and three touchdowns without a pick in the shocking 45-23 win.

5 Other Players On The Heisman Watch List

Reality check – if you’re not playing this weekend in one of the conference championship games, you’re not winning the 2022 Heisman Trophy.

You might be a finalist, but it’s going to take something amazing just to be close to the pin if you’re not doing something Heismaney with everyone paying attention.

Next week will be the list of finalists, and again, a few of these guys could be on it. None of them will win the trophy, though.

In alphabetical order …

QB Hendon Hooker, Tennessee
QB Drake Maye, North Carolina
QB Bo Nix, Oregon
RB Bijan Robinson, Texas
QB Bryce Young, Alabama

5. RB Blake Corum, Michigan

Unstoppable throughout the regular season, he wasn’t needed much in the first three games – he still managed to crank up five touchdown runs against UConn. Once the lights came on, he was fantastic averaging close to six yards per carry with 18 scores before suffering a knee injury late in the year against Illinois. He ran for 108 yards against the Illini as part of a run of eight straight 100-yard days.

Why Blake Corum Will Win the Heisman: He was the signature star for what’s turning into the signature team of the college football regular season. Seriously, Georgia was fun and all, but does it have wins as good as Michigan has over Ohio State and Penn State?

Why Blake Corum Won’t Win the Heisman: Shhhhhhh. You’re not supposed to say this out loud, but … 1) Blake Corum isn’t the best running back in college football – Bijan Robinson probably is. 2) Blake Corum isn’t the best running back in the Big Ten. He’s not even in the top two – Minnesota’s Mohamed Ibrahim and Chase Brown of Illinois had better seasons.

All that, and he – TOTALLY unfair, but it’s part of the Heisman deal – didn’t do much against Ohio State, and he’s hardly a lock to be a big factor in the Big Ten Championship with his knee injury still a concern.
