NEW: 4-star receiver Michael Turner commits to LSU

After picking up an offer last weekend, the New Orleans native wasted little time deciding where he wanted to play college ball.

LSU continues to do a good job of landing top in-state talent under Brian Kelly.

On Saturday night, the Tigers added another in-state commitment in the 2024 class in four-star New Orleans John Curtis receiver [autotag]Michael Turner[/autotag]. Ranked as the No. 398 player nationally by On3, Turner is the No. 9 overall prospect in the state of Louisiana.

Adding Turner helps ease the pain of several decommitments this week. The Tigers lost linebacker [autotag]Maurice Williams[/autotag] earlier in the week, and cornerback [autotag]Zion Ferguson[/autotag] decommitted on Sunday morning.

Turner received an offer last weekend while attending a camp in Baton Rouge, and it didn’t take long for the New Orleans native to decide where he wanted to play college ball.

Turner is one of three receiver commitments in LSU’s class joining the recently committed [autotag]Kylan Billiot[/autotag] and [autotag]Joseph Stone[/autotag], who shut down his commitment after taking official visits with several other schools earlier this month.

The Tigers’ 17-man recruiting class currently ranks eighth nationally per 247Sports and 13th per On3.

4-star LSU commit flips to Houston

Maurice Williams was the second highest-ranked commit in LSU’s 2024 class.

LSU suffered its second decommitment in the 2024 class on Friday night.

Four-star Pearland (Tex.) Shadow Creek linebacker [autotag]Maurice Williams[/autotag] announced his decommitment from the Tigers. Shortly after, he committed to the Houston Cougars, who are entering their first season in the Big 12.

It’s a huge loss for LSU. As the No. 110 prospect nationally in the 247Sports Composite rankings, he was the second-highest-rated prospect in coach Brian Kelly’s 2024 class. He also plays safety, but his rankings are as a linebacker

Williams is currently in Houston for an official visit, and he received several Crystal Ball projections for the Cougars shortly before his decommitment.

LSU still has three other linebacker prospects committed in the class in [autotag]Kolaj Cobbins[/autotag], [autotag]Xavier Atkins[/autotag] and [autotag]Dahvon Keys[/autotag]. All of them are four-star prospects, but they all also rank lower than Williams.

The Tigers still have 18 total prospects committed in 2024.

Where LSU stands in the latest 247Sports composite recruiting rankings

Here’s where LSU’s recruiting class stands as the staff prepares for summer.

Brian Kelly and LSU are off to a strong start on the 2024 trail with the Tigers sitting fourth in the latest recruiting rankings from 247Sports.

LSU has 12 commits with the highest-rated player being [autotag]Maurice Williams[/autotag], a top-100 linebacker out of Texas. LSU could still use some reinforcements at the top of the class. According to 247, Williams is the only top 100 recruit in the class.

LSU has just one more recruit in the top 200 — [autotag]Kolaj Cobbins[/autotag], also a linebacker.

Kelly has made it a point to beef up in the trenches. LSU landed several blue-chip offensive linemen in 2023 but struggled to seal the deal with some interior defensive linemen. That’s sure to be a heavy focus as LSU enters the back half of this recruiting cycle.

LSU already has its quarterback in [autotag]Colin Hurley[/autotag] after he reclassified out of the 2025 class.

Another area that will continue to receive focus is the secondary. LSU will rely on transfers at corner again this fall and this staff needs to continue to add young talent to that room.

But all things considered, LSU’s in a good spot right now, and after seeing the work the staff has done these last two cycles, expect LSU to finish strong again.

Rutgers football: Maurice Williams had another good visit this week

New Jersey quarterback prospect Maurice Williams visited the Scarlet Knights this week.

Maurice Williams visited Rutgers football this week, bringing the New Jersey quarterback once again back on campus.

Last season as the starting quarterback at Orange High School (Orange, N.J.) threw for 1,274 yards (61-of-124 passing attempts) for 19 passing touchdowns with two interceptions. He also ran the ball well with 488 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

His most recent visit to Rutgers was another good one and productive for the class of 2024 prospect.

“The day was great! I had fun watching the intensity of the workouts and seeing how everything flowed,” Williams told Rutgers Wire.

“It was a brisk day but the intensity the team brings got the adrenaline rushing.”

As for the relationship growing with the staff, Williams believes that the trip down to Rutgers was a good one.

[lawrence-related id=25542]

Currently without a Power Five, he believes that Rutgers could enter the mix at some point soon. He says this based on a conversation he had with defensive line coach Marquise Watson.

“I’ve spoken to the staff and they believe in my abilities on the field. I hope to see what’s in store for my spring training,” Williams said before touching on where things stand with an offer.

“Me and coach Watson spoke about it mast summer, I feel like I will that offer, maybe very soon. It’s just a process…that I’m ready to wait for. And when that opportunity comes, I’m ready.”

New Jersey quarterback Maurice Williams previews his upcoming visit to Rutgers football

Maurice Williams is set to visit Rutgers football this week during spring practice.

Class of 2024 quarterback prospect Maurice Williams is set to visit Rutgers football on Thursday during the first week of spring practice.

Williams is a quarterback prospect at Orange High School (Orange, N.J.). Last season for Orange, who were 5-5 on the year, he  threw for 1,274 yards (61-of-124 passing attempts) for 19 passing touchdowns and just two interceptions. He also had four rushing touchdowns on 48 carries for 488 rushing yards.

He missed three games last season due to injury.

“Things are going great. Me and the coaches talk on an almost daily basis, sending me words of encouragement,” Williams told Rutgers Wire.

“Definitely one of my favorite colleges in the recruiting process.”

This week, he will meet Rutgers offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca for the first time. Ciarrocca is a veteran offensive coordinator who was at Minnesota last year.

He has extensive experience as a college offensive coordinator, including a recent stop at Penn State. Williams hopes “to speak to (Ciarrocca) once I get there and build that relationship.”

[lawrence-related id=25327]

With an impressively strong arm but also good feet and balance, Williams is a dual-threat quarterback who can make plays out of the pocket. But he also has the ability to place his deep ball well, allowing his downfield targets to make plays.

“My recruitment is going great, lots of colleges are starting to take an interest in me,” Williams said.

“I have a Penn State visit on March 1 and a Syracuse visit on March 8. Many others are to be determined.”

Looking at LSU football’s commits so far in No. 1-ranked 2024 class

A running tracker of the Tigers’ 2024 commitments.

It’s never too early to look at recruits that are two years away, right? These kids are going into their junior year of high school this fall, but they already have big dreams and aspirations of playing in Death Valley and donning the purple and gold.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] is getting out ahead of his competition and earning commitments from the best players in the class of 2024. So far, the Tigers have eight commits for this class — ranking No. 1 nationally, per On3 — and that list is growing by the day. So, let’s take a look at all of the athletes that have committed to playing for LSU in 2024.

Disclaimer: Even though these kids are currently committed to LSU until they put pen to paper and sign their names on the dotted line, they can change their minds and play elsewhere. This list will be updated as more players commit.

2024 LSU commit scores on long touchdown pass

Xavier Atkins showed that he can make plays after the catch.

[autotag]Xavier Atkins[/autotag] is a 2024, four-star, 6-foot-1, 190-pound linebacker from Jonesboro-Hodge High School where he stars for the Jonesboro-Hodge Tigers.

The Tigers are 2-3 to start this season after a 20-10 win last night over Pineville High School. Even though Atkins is listed as a linebacker, when you are as good of an athlete as he is, sometimes you play on both sides of the ball so you can make even more of a difference.

In this play, Jonesboro-Hodge hits Atkins on a screen pass and he gets a couple of good blocks and sheds a tackle as he strolls into the endzone.

LSU currently has five overall commits for the 2024 recruiting class, a class that is ranked as the No. 3 class in the country, and Atkins is one of two linebacker commits. The other linebacker commit is [autotag]Maurice Williams[/autotag] from Pearland, Texas.

There are still a couple of years between now and Atkins signing day, but he will definitely be a player to keep an eye on.

Tigers pick up Crystal Ball for 4-star Georgia athlete

The Tigers picked up a projection for Joseph Stone, a versatile offensive player.

Joseph Stone is a 5-foot-1, 180-pound athlete from Loganville, Georgia, where he plays for Grayson High School. [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and the LSU coaching staff have seemingly already established a recruiting pipeline from Loganville to Baton Rouge as [autotag]Michael Daugherty[/autotag] is a current 2023 commit that also plays at Grayson.

Stone is profiled as an athlete. In his film, he plays wide receiver, quarterback and some running back. When he lines up behind the center he is primarily a wildcat quarterback with the coach using that formation as just another opportunity to put the ball in the hands of one of his best players, but there are times where he will drop back and pass as well.

LSU currently has two commits for the class of 2024 in [autotag]Maurice Williams[/autotag] and [autotag]Xavier Atkins[/autotag]. Coach Kelly and his staff would love to add another four-star to the list.

LSU flips in-state 2024 linebacker from Missouri

Three-star Xavier Atkins chose to leave one Tigers team for another.

The dominoes continue to fall for [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and his coaching staff. The Tigers landed three prospects on July 4th (all class of 2023), and on July 5th, three-star in-state linebacker [autotag]Xavier Atkins[/autotag] announced his commitment to play for LSU at the next level.

Atkins is a 6-foot-1, 200-pound linebacker from Jonesboro, Louisiana, where he plays for Jonesboro-Hodge High School. The Jonesboro-Hodge Tigers finished last season 10-4 with a loss to Amite in the Louisiana Class 2A semifinals.

He becomes the second commit in the 2024 class and the first linebacker. [autotag]Maurice Williams[/autotag] is his only cohort in that class, but things could change quickly as LSU is expected to be in contention for many players as they announce their commitments this month.

Atkins was committed to playing for Missouri until he committed from one Tiger team yesterday to join another one, one that felt more like home. It’s been a great past few days if you are a Tigers fan.
