On3 projects Texas A&M to flip LSU linebacker commit

Xavier Atkins was expected to attend Bayou Splash, but he opted to head to College Station, instead.

The Tigers have quite a bit of momentum on the recruiting trail right now, but they may be on the verge of losing a commitment.

On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine now projects that four-star linebacker commit [autotag]Xavier Atkins[/autotag] will flip to Texas A&M with that prediction holding at 82.6% confidence.

Atkins was expected to be one of the visitors for the busy Bayou Splash recruiting event this weekend, but he ultimately opted to attend a pool party in College Station instead. Following that decision, LSU insiders Shea Dixon and Billy Embody issued flip predictions, seemingly signaling an incoming decision.

If Atkins does choose to flip to the Aggies, it’s a loss the Tigers could handle. He ranks inside the top 300 nationally according to On3, but LSU has a good linebacker class headlined by top-250 players in [autotag]Tylen Singleton[/autotag] and [autotag]Kolaj Cobbins[/autotag].

4-star LSU commit flips to Houston

Maurice Williams was the second highest-ranked commit in LSU’s 2024 class.

LSU suffered its second decommitment in the 2024 class on Friday night.

Four-star Pearland (Tex.) Shadow Creek linebacker [autotag]Maurice Williams[/autotag] announced his decommitment from the Tigers. Shortly after, he committed to the Houston Cougars, who are entering their first season in the Big 12.

It’s a huge loss for LSU. As the No. 110 prospect nationally in the 247Sports Composite rankings, he was the second-highest-rated prospect in coach Brian Kelly’s 2024 class. He also plays safety, but his rankings are as a linebacker

Williams is currently in Houston for an official visit, and he received several Crystal Ball projections for the Cougars shortly before his decommitment.

LSU still has three other linebacker prospects committed in the class in [autotag]Kolaj Cobbins[/autotag], [autotag]Xavier Atkins[/autotag] and [autotag]Dahvon Keys[/autotag]. All of them are four-star prospects, but they all also rank lower than Williams.

The Tigers still have 18 total prospects committed in 2024.

Where LSU stands in the latest 247Sports composite recruiting rankings

Here’s where LSU’s recruiting class stands as the staff prepares for summer.

Brian Kelly and LSU are off to a strong start on the 2024 trail with the Tigers sitting fourth in the latest recruiting rankings from 247Sports.

LSU has 12 commits with the highest-rated player being [autotag]Maurice Williams[/autotag], a top-100 linebacker out of Texas. LSU could still use some reinforcements at the top of the class. According to 247, Williams is the only top 100 recruit in the class.

LSU has just one more recruit in the top 200 — [autotag]Kolaj Cobbins[/autotag], also a linebacker.

Kelly has made it a point to beef up in the trenches. LSU landed several blue-chip offensive linemen in 2023 but struggled to seal the deal with some interior defensive linemen. That’s sure to be a heavy focus as LSU enters the back half of this recruiting cycle.

LSU already has its quarterback in [autotag]Colin Hurley[/autotag] after he reclassified out of the 2025 class.

Another area that will continue to receive focus is the secondary. LSU will rely on transfers at corner again this fall and this staff needs to continue to add young talent to that room.

But all things considered, LSU’s in a good spot right now, and after seeing the work the staff has done these last two cycles, expect LSU to finish strong again.

Where LSU’s 2024 recruiting class stands in the latest On3 rankings at the end of March

On3 ranks LSU’s class a bit lower than 247Sports.

There are still more than eight months between now and early signing day for the 2024 class in December, which is when history tells us the bulk of the class’ prospects will sign.

Though it’s early in the process, this cycle has the chance to be coach Brian Kelly’s best yet since taking over at LSU. The Tigers already have 11 players committed including a quarterback in [autotag]Colin Hurley[/autotag], a four-star Jacksonville, Florida, prospect from powerhouse Trinity Christian, who reclassified from the 2025 class.

In the month of March, the Tigers added a trio of players in four-star linebackers [autotag]Kolaj Cobbins[/autotag] and [autotag]Dahvon Keys[/autotag], as well as three-star EDGE [autotag]Ahmad Breaux[/autotag], who LSU managed to flip from Duke.

Things will really start to heat up in the coming months when most prospects begin to take their official visits in the summer, but for now, here’s how things stand in the latest On3 industry recruiting rankings.

LSU flips Duke commit Ahmad Breaux after junior day visit

The Tigers now have the No. 2 class in the country after landing a pair of commitments this weekend.

LSU added its 10th commitment in the 2024 recruiting class on Sunday when it flipped edge rusher [autotag]Ahmad Breaux[/autotag], a three-star edge rusher from Ruston, Louisiana, from the Duke Blue Devils.

Breaux was in Baton Rouge on Saturday as a visitor for LSU’s junior day, and he picked up an offer while on his unofficial visit. He committed to the Tigers the next day, opting to stay home and play in the SEC.

Listed at 6-foot-3 and 255 pounds, Breaux is the No. 707 player nationally and No. 16 prospect in Louisiana, according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s a trending player who’s picked up a number of Power Five offers in recent weeks. He had an official visit set for Stanford this week, though it’s unclear if he still intends to make that trip.

Breaux detailed his visit with 247Sports’ Sonny Shipp.

“My day was one of the best experiences ever,” Breaux told 247Sports after he got the offer. “I was warmly welcomed by the entire staff as soon as I came in the football operations center and I couldn’t have asked for anything better.

“The biggest highlight of the day was when I had a great conversation with Coach Matt House, and he gave me a true insight into a system that truly fits me, and it opened my eyes entirely to LSU.”

With the additions of Breaux and linebacker [autotag]Kolaj Cobbins[/autotag], a top-five prospect in Louisiana who committed to the Tigers on Friday, coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] now boasts the No. 2 recruiting class in 2024 as things currently stand.

LSU lands 4-star linebacker Kolaj Cobbins

The Tigers landed their ninth commitment in the 2024 class on Friday night.

The Tigers’ 2024 recruiting class is shaping up to be a special one, and the team added its ninth commit in the cycle on Friday night in four-star Destrehan (La.) linebacker [autotag]Kolaj Cobbins[/autotag].

Cobbins ranks just inside the national top 200 according to 247Sports, and he becomes the fifth top-200 commitment for LSU in the class, which currently ranks third nationally. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound prospect chose the in-state Tigers over Texas, Michigan, Ole Miss, Colorado and others.

The recruiting trail has been key for what coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] is building at LSU. He landed the No. 6 high school recruiting class in 2023, and he could be in line to land yet another top-five class.

With a few more additions like Cobbins, it will certainly be within the realm of possibility.

LSU remains a prime contender for this 4-star Louisiana EDGE

The Tigers are in a good spot for Kolaj Cobbins, but there’s a lot of competition for the No. 5 player in the Boot.

LSU is off to a nice start in 2024 with eight players committed in a class that currently ranks in the top five. But there’s one uncommitted player who coach Brian Kelly really wants to land: four-star Destrehan edge rusher [autotag]Kolaj Cobbins[/autotag].

Cobbins — who is rated in the top 200 nationally and is the No. 5 prospect in the state of Louisiana — has taken several visits to LSU, most recently in January. He spoke highly of that trip to On3’s Sam Spiegelman (subscription required), particularly of his interactions with Kelly, who he said told him that he was a “need.”

The Tigers aren’t without competition, though. Cobbins has locked in an official visit to Michigan on March 24, and he’s also eying trips to Oregon and Colorado. Per Spiegelman, Ole Miss’ addition of former Alabama defensive coordinator Pete Golding also keeps the Rebels in the mix.

LSU will have to battle if it wants to land Cobbins, but it remains the favorite per On3 at 36.8% followed by Ole Miss.

LSU makes 4-star edge rusher’s top 6

The Tigers are a finalist for one of the top prospects in Louisiana in Kolaj Cobbins.

[autotag]Kolaj Cobbins[/autotag] is a 6-foot-3, 200-pound, four-star edge rusher from the class of 2024. Cobbins is from Destrehan, Louisiana, where he plays for Destrehan High School. The Destrehan Wildcats finished the 2022 season 15-0 with a win over Ruston in the 5A state championship game.

Cobbins recently released his final six schools and the LSU Tigers made the list. LSU joins Michigan, Colorado, Oregon, Ole Miss and Texas in the final list. Cobbins currently doesn’t have any Crystal Ball projections but LSU is a 39% favorite to land him per On3.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] has placed an emphasis on recruiting the boot since he came to LSU, and Cobbins is one of the best players in the state, so look for Kelly to make a big push for Cobbins before his signing day. LSU’s 2024 class currently ranks as the No. 2 class nationally and there are a lot of high-quality prospects that LSU is the favorite for.

4-star LB Kolaj Cobbins puts Oregon in top 6 of recruitment

4-star LB Kolaj Cobbins announced his top 6 this week and the Ducks made the cut.

The 2024 recruiting cycle is starting to ramp up as the 2023 cycle comes to a close, and the Oregon Ducks have found themselves in a good position when it comes to being able to land a talented linebacker out of Louisiana.

4-star LB Kolaj Cobbins, a 6-foot-3, 200-pounder from down south, recently announced his top 6 schools and kept the Ducks in the mix along with others like LSU, Colorado, Michigan, and others.

Cobbins is rated as the No. 20 LB and No. 205 overall player in the nation per 247Sports.

There is not any record of Cobbins paying a visit to Oregon just yet, but if he is serious about the Ducks then we can expect to see him out in Eugene at some point over the coming year as he continues to narrow down his recruitment.

Kolaj Cobbins’ Recruiting Profile

Michigan football makes top group for 2024 four-star in SEC country

Gotta get this guy! #GoBlue

Michigan football has been working hard in recent years to wade more into the state of Louisiana. It was successful in 2022 when it was able to reel in wide receiver/cornerback Amorion Walker, stealing him away from Notre Dame.

The Wolverines are hoping to get another from Louisiana in 2024. And they’re at least making some headway.

One of the maize and blue’s targets this recruiting cycle is 2024 Destrehan (La.) four-star Kolaj Cobbins, a linebacker listed at 6-foot-3, 200-pounds. Rated the No. 205 player in the country according to 247Sports’ proprietary rankings, Cobbins is the 20th-best linebacker in 2024 and the No. 3 player in the state of Louisiana.

He released his top six on Wednesday and included Michigan along with Colorado, Texas, Oregon, LSU, and Ole Miss.

[lawrence-related id=67876,67864]

Cobbins is one of four offers Michigan currently has to prospects in the state of Louisiana. The Wolverines currently have five commitments in 2024 — LB Mason Curtis, OT Luke Hamilton, TE Hogan Hansen, DL Ted Hammond, and DL Manuel Beigel.

Cobbins currently has no predictions via the 247Sports Crystal Ball.
