Colts sign P Matt Haack, waive K Jake Verity

The Colts have their replacement for Rigoberto Sanchez.

The Indianapolis Colts signed punter Matt Haack and waived kicker Jake Verity, the team announced Thursday.

Haack joins the Colts roster after the unfortunate news that starting punter Rigoberto Sanchez suffered a torn Achilles during practice Tuesday when running sprints at the end of the session.

Haack, 28, has been in the league since joining the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent out of Arizona State in 2017. He spent four years with the Dolphins before signing a three-year deal with the Buffalo Bills in 2021.

However, the Bills opted to go with Matt Araiza, “The Punt God,” this offseason and Haack was released on Aug. 22.

In order to make room on the roster, the Colts waived kicker Jake Verity, who had been battling with starter Rodrigo Blankenship.

Matt Araiza wins Bills punter battle, Matt Haack released by team

Matt Araiza wins #Bills punter battle, Matt Haack released by team:

The Buffalo Bills’ position battle at punter has come to an early end.

The team announced on Monday that Matt Haack has been released. That leaves rookie Matt Araiza as the Bills’ starting punter heading into the 2022 NFL season.

Araiza, a sixth-round pick at the recent draft, was viewed as the favorite to win the competition all offseason. Not only is it rare for a team to use a draft pick on any kicker, Haack had a poor season in 2021.

Because of that, Haack agreed to a revised contract this spring After that and once Araiza was selected, the writing appeared to be on the wall for him.

Buffalo’s actions in their first two preseason games of the summer also indicated a heavy favoriting of Araiza.

In the Bills’ first two exhibition games, Araiza took all holding duties. That’s important because it was the big road block in Araiza’s way to win the position battles against Haack.

During his college career, Araiza was both kicker and punter for his team so he did not have experience holding at all. That is a job he would have to master for placekicker Tyler Bass, and evidently he accomplished that.

Along with releasing Haack, Buffalo also cut receiver Tavon Austin. That leaves the Bills at 82 players on their roster–NFL teams have to be down to 80 by the next roster deadline on Tuesday.

What Sean McDermott said about Matt Araiza’s field flipping 82-yard punt

Even Sean McDermott had to sing the praises of the ‘Punt God’

Buffalo Bills rookie punter Matt Araiza took the field for his first preseason game action Saturday following a collegiate campaign that featured some big boots for distance.

So much so, that he was nicknamed the “Punt God”.

Coaches and fans along with members of the media have wondered with anticipation whether the San Diego State product would bring the same powerful kicks to the NFL.

This weekend he did just that, with one of his kicks going for 82-yards in the Bills 27-24 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

His lone punt of the day, Araiza made it count, sending his kick 66 yards in the air before picking up 16 more on the ground when it landed.

A sixth-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft, he had the highest average in NCAA history last year with 51.19 yards and the ability to kick within opponents 20 yard territory. On his way to winning the Ray Guy Award, that included two kicks of at least 80 yards, one of which was 86. That his first kick in gameplay for Buffalo was 82 is no small feat, and it’s only fueling the hype surrounding the young kicker.

His big punt certainly caught the attention of his coaches and teammates as well.

Bills backup QB Case Keenum said “It got everybody geeked up” while addressing the press post-game.

When head coach Sean McDermott was asked about the punt as well, he smiled. “Situationally, to be in those moments of the game, whether you’re a coach or player that’s hard to simulate in practice,” McDermott said while speaking to the media. “Being able to flip the field like that is huge.”

Araiza and veteran P Matt Haack are in a competition for the starting role, and the rookie is certainly making a strong case early to earn it. He also held for another kicker with a big leg, Tyler Bass, on the game-winning field goal.

“Good to see the young guy get out there and make the most of the opportunity,” his coach added.

Araiza will have a chance for more live game action this Saturday, August 20th as the Bills welcome the Denver Broncos to Orchard Park for their second contest of the preseason.

Hey, look: Bills punter Matt Araiza can hold after all

Hey, look: #Bills punter Matt Araiza can hold after all:

Punter Matt Araiza has had a spotlight on him from almost the moment he was selected by the Buffalo Bills at the 2022 NFL draft.

But it has had nothing to do with his ability to boot the ball. Rather, the sixth-round rookie was both a punter and kicker in college. Because of that, he’s never been a holder which is what he would have to do in Buffalo.

For early portions of the offseason, Araiza was not doing much of that. At least, not in front of onlookers.

Good news: Now he is.

From a training camp practice at St. John Fisher University, Araiza was spotted holding for kicker Tyler Bass. He did so both on the side of the practice session and during team drills.

Looks like the rookie is coming along.

Bills ST coordinator Matthew Smiley gives early takes on punter battle

#Bills ST coordinator Matthew Smiley gives early takes on punter battle:

The Buffalo Bills have a punter battle on their hands.

At the 2022 NFL draft, Buffalo selected Matt Araiza in the sixth round. But the Bills already had a punter on their roster in Matt Haack.

Haack struggled during his first season in Buffalo in 2021. He took a pay cut in order to stick around another year.

And even though the Bills did use a pick on Araiza, nothing will be guaranteed. We’ve got a long ways to go, training camp hasn’t even started yet, but the battle has begun.

From the team’s OTAs (organized team activities), Buffalo special team coordinator Matt Smiley provided an update on the competition. He had good things to say about both players at this point.

On the rookie, Smiley said he’s got natural talent and it’s easy to see. Smiley then added he believes Haack was better than most give him credit for last year.

Buffalo Bills winners, losers following 2022 NFL draft

Winners, losers from the #Bills after the 2022 NFL draft:

Each year the NFL draft comes and goes and all the attention is on the players picked. At this year’s event, the Buffalo Bills added eight to their roster.

But these additions have their ripple effects through the roster that was already in place. Let’s run through some of those now.

Here are winners and losers from the Bills roster following the 2022 draft:

2022 NFL draft: Bills punter Matt Araiza motivated after slide

2022 NFL draft: #Bills punter Matt Araiza motivated after down the board:

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbw1j59gmjw5gdj player_id=none image=https://billswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Bills made some buzz with their selections in the 2022 NFL Draft and did so on day three, no less.

With the first pick of the sixth round the team took left-footed and right-handed college punting sensation Matt Araiza off the board, a player who was considered by many to be the top talent at his position going into the draft.

During the 2021 college football season as a redshirt junior at San Diego State, Araiza set NCAA records with a 51.2-yard average and 36 punts that went for 50-plus yards, 17 of which were good for a minimum of 60 yards, two that went at least 80 yards, and one of which that went for 86 yards.

He won the 2021 Ray Guy Award as the best collegiate punter and was named a first-team All-American and the Mountain West Conference Special Teams Player of the Year.

Still, NFL teams viewed him as a project, resulting in a slide down the draft board to the sixth round, during which two other punters were selected ahead of him.

“The people who know me know that I take a lot of things very personal,” Araiza said while addressing the media for the first time after being selected. “We’ll just say I have a lot of motivation to dominate this season.”

Even still, he realizes he has some work to do to compete in the NFL.

“I think every aspect of the pro-level I need to continue to work on,” he said. “I’m by no means a complete player yet, but I’m excited to get into the building and work with the staff and work with the other teams and get ready to just help the team as much as we can on special teams.”

He played as a full-time punter for only one season in college, so it says a lot that he was able to accomplish what he did. He started as a place-kicker and went on to set a San Diego State-record 22 field goals, was perfect on extra points in 2019, and placed 78.5% of his kickoffs in the end zone for touchbacks.

While he has the leg strength and experience at all three kicking positions, he’ll need to improve solely as a punter in holding, hang time, and punts in short-field situations to help give the Bills offense more possession opportunities.

“My first goal is to be a starter as a punter and a holder. That’s more on my mind right now,” Araiza said. “I’ve mostly put field goals to the side, at least for this pre-draft process, because I had more things I needed to change about my punting game. I needed to add hang time and add direction and become more of a pro-style punter. So I definitely had more work to do in the punting department.”

The first player off the board at his position, Penn State’s Jordan Stout whom the Bills had a pre-draft visit, was taken by Baltimore in the fourth round using the pick they acquired from Buffalo via their first-round swap to move up and select CB Kaiir Elam.

As he had no experience holding in high school or in college, he’ll need to learn to develop as one for Bass on field goals and extra-point attempts. He’d worked out back home in San Diego pre-draft with former Chargers kicker Nick Novak and held for Seahawks kicker Jason Myers, beginning to learn what kickers are looking for in holding.

GM Brandon Brandon Beane believes he’s in a good position to learn from current Bills punter Matt Haack as well.

“Some kickers are late getting it down, late getting it the way they want it, give them the laces,” Beane said while addressing the media. “You know that’s the great thing about Matt Haack is that he’s an elite holder.”

Araiza appears confident in his ability to adapt to holding as well.

“I’m very confident in my hands, I’m confident in myself as an athlete and I’m someone who cares a lot about the success of my team,” added Araiza. “I think all of those qualities will translate well to holding.”

Winners, losers from the Bills’ offseason so far

Winners, losers from the #Bills’ offseason so far:

The inital wave of free agency from the 2022 NFL offseason is over. The Buffalo Bills were players in that pool.

Looking ahead, the Bills will be at the upcoming NFL draft as well. Buffalo holds seven totals picks there and some of them will change how we look at the team’s roster.

But for now, here are winners and losers from the Bills’ locker room so far this offseason:

Bills’ Matt Haack agrees to revised contract, takes pay cut

#Bills’ Matt Haack agrees to revised contract, takes pay cut:

Punter Matt Haack helped the Buffalo Bills free up some salary cap space over the weekend while also likely getting himself another chance with the team.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Haack agreed to a revised contract. It included a pay cut.

In the new deal, Haack’s salary cap dropped from $1.9 million to $1.49M and his pay reduces to $1.14M. The final year of his contract also is now voided and Haack will be a free agent after 2022.

Haack was inconsistent in his first season with the Bills. One game in particular, against the New York Jets, was his lowest point. That game included multiple botched punts.

At the end of last season, Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane openly admitted that Haack had struggles. He signed a three-year deal with the Bills last offseason.

“Inconsistent year,” Beane said at his end of season press conference. “He had his ups and downs. Matt’s a great kid, worked hard, really did, it just, it didn’t always translate.”

With the bit of cap relief Buffalo obtained from Haack’s new deal, there is a chance that the team decide to use it on competition for Haack in training camp.

If the Bills do not decide to sign another punter in free agency, Buffalo does has two extra Day 3 picks at the upcoming 2022 NFL draft which could be in the ballpark for a punter there.
