Potential replacements for Mark Dantonio at Michigan State

Who are some names to watch for as MSU opens up a coaching search?

For the first time in 13 years Michigan State football is looking for a new coach.

Mark Dantonio resigned Tuesday afternoon leaving the school in a spot it hasn’t been in since the 2007 season when he took over. The school promoted defensive coordinator Mike Tressel to interim head coach while a formal search is conducted.

Here are some names being bandied about as a potential replacement.

Luke Fickell, Cincinnati Head Coach

Luke Fickell is a well-respected defensive mind that has been successful at Cincinnati after an excellent run as defensive coordinator at Ohio State. Sound familiar? Fickell’s path is on the exact same trajectory as Dantonio’s before he took the MSU job. Fickell is a midwest guy and an excellent recruiter. He would bring the same blue-collar mentality that Dantonio built Michigan State with. He’s among the most mentioned names whenever a job comes open and is prime for a step up. Michigan State could be just the opportunity Fickell is waiting for.

Pat Narduzzi, Pittsburgh Head Coach

Narduzzi could very well return to East Lansing as the head man. He has great memories here, leading some of the best defenses in the nation during his time as defensive coordinator, a position he held for eight seasons. Narduzzi is 36-29 during his five seasons at Pitt and won the ACC Coastal division in 2018. Narduzzi’s Pitt teams have been to bowl games in four of his five seasons.

Mike Tressel, Michigan State Defensive Coordinator

Tressel could be in the mix, depending on how the administration wants to handle Danotnio’s late departure. Many of the good candidates have begun preparations for the 2020 season and with recruiting classes finishing up in the next few days, it may be hard to lure somebody to move their family and ditch their current programs this late in the process. If that’s the case, MSU may end up with an internal promotion and Tressel would be the candidate there, leading top defensive units the last two seasons.

Mark Stoops, Kentucky Head Coach

Stoops has midwest ties being from Youngstown and we all know the connection between Michigan State, the midwest and specifically the town of Youngstown. Stoops has done a really good job at Kentucky despite being in impossible circumstances. Yes, he’s in the SEC, but his program doesn’t have the resources available to them as the big boys in the conference. Plus, Kentucky football will always be a distant second fiddle to the basketball team in Lexington. Stoops has already proven to be an excellent recruiter of Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania, stealing top prospects from the big in-state programs.

Matt Campbell, Iowa State Head Coach

Campbell has been a hot name in recent coaching searches and truth be told, he might be waiting for a bigger job than Michigan State. Heading to East Lansing would certainly be a step up for Campbell, but if he waits he could be a name mentioned for Texas or Oklahoma or a job that size when they open up. Campbell is a gifted offensive mind that has piled up a number of impressive wins during his time in Ames. He took over a 3-9 team and had them to eight wins within two years.

Jason Candle, Toledo Head Coach

Another Ohio guy! Candle has done a really good job at Toledo, racking up a 34-19 record in his five seasons, including and 11-win campaign in 2017. Candle is an offensive mastermind type and the Rockets are always among the top offensive teams in the MAC. He’s a little bit like Matt Campbell light, having worked with Campbell at Mount Union (WI) and Toledo in the past.

Urban Meyer

Just kidding. He’d never do it, but wouldn’t that be fun?!

Claypool’s Monster Half Leads Notre Dame to 20-6 Intermission Lead

Notre Dame scored two plays later and takes a 20-6 lead to the locker room at halftime in large part to their star wide receiver who also had a first quarter fumble recovery on special teams.

Through thirty minutes of the Camping World Bowl it’s obvious the best player on the field today has been none other than Chase Claypool who has pulled in four receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown.  It’s worth noting I have no idea how replay officials took away what should have been his second touchdown reception of the half as well, but I digress.

Leading 3-0 in the first quarter and facing a third-and-12, Ian Book found Claypool in the right side of the end zone to score the game’s first touchdown.

Claypool has been fantastic all year and made huge plays in key spots to extend game-deciding drives time and time again.

After Notre Dame stopped Iowa State on a fourth and one late in the first half, Book immediately went to his favorite weapon, Mr. Claypool himself and connected for what anyone watching thought was his second touchdown of the game, but officials overturned the touchdown call and marked him down inside the one yard line.

Notre Dame scored two plays later and takes a 20-6 lead to the locker room at halftime in large part to their star wide receiver who also had a first quarter fumble recovery on special teams.

You’ve got one more half of Chase Claypool ever in a Notre Dame uniform.  Enjoy it and FINISH!

Notre Dame/Iowa State: Coaches Final Press Conference Before Camping World Bowl

The talk is officially all over, only thing left to do is strap the helmets and shoulder pads on and play one final game for the 2019 football season.

Will Notre Dame show up motivated or will the reports of them having their minds elsewhere much of the week end up costing them a very winnable game?

The talk is officially all over, only thing left to do is strap the helmets and shoulder pads on and play one final game for the 2019 football season.

Will Notre Dame show up motivated or will the reports of them having their minds elsewhere much of the week end up costing them a very winnable game?

If Iowa State wins what does it mean for their program going forward?

All of that and plenty more was discussed as the two head coaches, Brian Kelly and Matt Campbell had a joint press conference, their final media obligations before Saturday’s game.

Here’s a transcript of what was said by both, it begins by opening statements before questions from the assembled media:

Camping World Bowl: FIW Staff Predictions

Can Notre Dame reach the 11 win mark or will Iowa State finally close the deal against one of these top teams that they’ve played so closely all year?

We’ve made it through the holidays and the bowl slate picks up steadily from here forward. Friday should be fun but we’re all waiting for the historic Camping World Bowl and Notre Dame’s showdown with Iowa State on Saturday.

Can Notre Dame reach the 11 win mark or will Iowa State finally close the deal against one of these top teams that they’ve played so closely all year?

Here is how the Fighting Irish Wire Staff sees Saturday’s Camping World Bowl going:

Picks –

Geoffrey Clark:

Ever since the loss to Michigan, the Irish have been on a mission to prove that and the defeat at Georgia were anomalies.  Plus, they have the defense to shut down Brock Purdy or at least take away his receivers’ opportunities.  The time off will cause Notre Dame’s offense to take a slight dip, but it’ll still be enough for a convincing win.

Notre Dame 33 Iowa State 14

Jeff Feyerer:

I get the sentiment that Notre Dame may struggle with a new man calling plays and facing off against one of the unluckiest teams in recent college football memory, but I still find it hard to go against the Irish in this one.
Brock Purdy is probably the best QB they’ve played all season, but the Irish pass defense, which has had a very strong year, should hold him in check. And I expect Ian Book to give Irish fans something to be excited about next season as I’m assuming we’ll see a healthy dose of Braden Lenzy and Lawrence Keys.
Notre Dame 31 Iowa State 17
Nick Shepkowski:
I have nothing against Iowa State but I do hate this matchup. You have a Cyclones squad that wants to set the tone for 2020 where they could theoretically enter the season being seen as the second best team in the Big XII, meanwhile Notre Dame’s offensive coordinator change doesn’t necessarily mean good things for this individual game.
Brock Purdy is the real deal and a lot of the nation will be watching him for the first time. I think he rises to the occasion and makes this an incredibly interesting game. In a close matchup I trust Notre Dame’s defense to make one more big play than Iowa State’s. It’s not pretty but it’s good enough for an eleventh win.

Notre Dame Football – Camping World Bowl Schedule

Not going to lie:  Obviously excited for one more game for the 2019 season to get here but now I really want to go drive a go-kart before Christmas.

Notre Dame’s 10-2 football team leaves South Bend today to spend Christmas in Orlando as they prepare for the 7-5 Iowa State Cyclones in the Camping World Bowl.  When will you hear from Brian Kelly and some of the players before the game?

Today is the travel day from South Bend while plenty is planned both in preparation and in fun off the field this week.  Here’s how that will look for the Fighting Irish (all times ET):

Monday, Dec. 23 – Travel Day

Tuesday, Dec. 24 – First On-Site Practice (Boone High School)

  • 11:30 a.m. – Brian Kelly and a selected player will meet the media before practice gets underway at noon. The first three periods of practice will be open to the media at Boone High School in Orlando.

Wednesday, Dec. 25 – Second On-Site Practice (Boone High School)

  • 11:30 a.m. – Brian Kelly and selected student-athlete will address the media before noon practice again just as Jesus would want it on his birthday.

Thursday, Dec. 26 – Day For Kids & Third On-Site Practice (Camping World Stadium)

  • Day for Kids Event (9-11 a.m.) at Andretti Indoor Karting & Games

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iL1h9aiHVR8&w=560&h=315]

  • 1:30 p.m. – Coach Kelly available upon arrival before practice begins at 2 p.m.

Friday, Dec. 27 – Head Coaches Press Conference (Rosen Plaza Hotel)/Pep Rally (Pointe Orlando)

  • Coach Kelly & Iowa State Head Coach Matt Campbell will hold a joint press conference (9 a.m.) at the Rosen Plaza Hotel

  • Notre Dame pep rally at 4:45 p.m. at Pointe Orlando

Not going to lie:  I’m obviously excited for one more game for the 2019 season to get here but now I really want to go drive a go-kart before Christmas.

Also worth noting – with Christmas coming up we’ll all be busy but keep it here as we’ll have reaction from each day ahead of game day as Notre Dame seeks just their eighth 11-win season in school history.

Notre Dame Football: Iowa State Sells Out Camping World Bowl Allotment

If they traveled to San Antonio by the masses to see their Cyclones play Washington State you could bet your rear end they were going to travel to Orlando to see them take on Notre Dame.

We told you on Sunday that part of the reason Iowa State was so appealing to the Camping World Bowl was because they’ve got a passionate fan-base that makes up for a less-than-stellar team history.

We mentioned how Iowa State fans helped pack the Alamo Bowl last year and the Liberty Bowl previous to that.

You can go ahead and add the Camping World Bowl to that list.

It’s hardly surprising. If they traveled to San Antonio by the masses to see their Cyclones play Washington State you could bet your rear end they were going to travel to Orlando to see them take on Notre Dame.

In case you’re curious there are tickets available on the Notre Dame Athletic website at the time of this posting, listed between $79 and $190.

Notre Dame/Iowa State: Camping World Bowl Watchability Rankings

You can go over recruiting rankings all you want and look at records but I really do buy into Iowa State’s coaching staff.  It’s not a mistake that Matt Campbell gets linked to NFL jobs an incredible amount despite his record being far from outstanding.

Pretty much no Notre Dame fans are excited that a 10-2 season ends in Orlando for the Camping World Bowl against an unranked 7-5 Iowa State team, but it’s a Notre Dame game at the end of the day and the last one we’ll have until they open the 2020 season against Navy in Ireland.

We’ll all soak it up, even if commenters here and on the message boards are full of those complaining and claiming they’ll protest it by not watching.

The rest of the nation has been weighing in on all bowl games though and ranking them from worst matchup or the least-watchable to the best match-up and most-watchable.

Where does Notre Dame’s contest against the pass-happy Cyclones rank?

Here’s what everyone else says and remember, the ranking is out of the 39 total bowl games this season:
