Sixers beginning to have contract extension talks with Matisse Thybulle

The Philadelphia 76ers are beginning to have contract extension talks with Matisse Thybulle.

Philadelphia 76ers fourth-year guard Matisse Thybulle is one of the elite defenders in the league. He has career averages of a block, 1.6 steals and shooting 32.4% from beyond the arc in 21.8 minutes. He has worked on his offensive game to the tune of 44% shooting from deep in the preseason.

As he begins his fourth season, Thybulle is eligible for a rookie-scale contract extension. However, it has to be done before 6 p.m. EDT on Monday, or he will enter restricted free agency in the 2023 offseason.

Per Chris Haynes of Yahoo! Sports, the conversations between the Sixers and Thybulle have been brief, but good. Haynes reports:

Conversations have been with Thybulle’s agent, Aaron Goodwin of Goodwin Sports.

The key for Thybulle has always been his jumper. He needs to be productive on both ends of the floor. He has been terrific on defense; he can wreak havoc on the opposition, but he has been a non-factor on the offensive end.

If he can carry his preseason 3-point shooting over to the regular season, that would be a huge development for him and the Sixers in the future.

Player grades: Joel Embiid dominates, Sixers beat Hornets in preseason

Joel Embiid has a big night as the Philadelphia 76ers knock off the Charlotte Hornets in the preseason finale.

PHILADELPHIA–The Philadelphia 76ers finished up the preseason schedule on Wednesday night when they played host to the Charlotte Hornets and it was a night where the starters got extended minutes. Considering it is the final exhibition game, it made sense to see the starters stretched into the third quarter.

Joel Embiid played in just his second preseason game and he looked dominant out on the floor. The big fella finished with 19 points and he was clearly the best player on the floor as the Sixers came away with a 99-94 win in the preseason finale.

James Harden had a solid game with 17 points and five assists, Tyrese Maxey had nine points on 3-for-13 shooting, and Montrezl Harrell had 14 and six rebounds off the bench.

Sixers give their thoughts on Matisse Thybulle’s shooting progression

Philadelphia 76ers teammates give their thoughts on Matisse Thybulle’s shooting progression.

CAMDEN, N.J.–Philadelphia 76ers wing player Matisse Thybulle is one of the elite defenders in the NBA as he enters his fourth season in the league, but one thing that continues to hold him back is his offensive game.

Thybulle worked hard all summer long in order to become a better 3-point shooter and he saw some progression in that area in Monday’s preseason win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. After he missed his first two 3-pointers, he knocked down his final three attempts from deep in order to take some steps forward in that area.

“I’m super proud just because he’s putting the time and the work in and just having the mentality to let it fly,” said Tobias Harris. “I don’t care how many shots he makes. I just care that he’s letting them go and it’s real growth because you just look at the game, the first one was an airball. More times than not, most guys fall into a tunnel, like should I take the next one? And the next one he took was a fast 3, no conscious. That type of mentality is huge.”

Coach Doc Rivers discussed his shot on Saturday after the team’s Blue X White scrimmage in Delaware and he admitted that Thybulle is not a good shooter yet. However, because of the work he puts in, that will come at some point.

“Just for somebody that has had this knack of, is he a good shooter? Is he not? But he puts his time in, he’s confident with it, and he’s able to let them fly, and he was rewarded for all that throughout the game,” Harris added. “He does so much great things on the defensive end, but really what you’re seeing now the preseason is him being able to knock shots down, be confident shooting the basketball, and that’s what we need for our group.”

Thybulle has also been working with teammate Furkan Korkmaz on the offensive end of the floor in terms of his shooting. Korkmaz had a down year shooting in the 2021-22 season, but overall in his career, he is known for his shooting. Thybulle working with him is a good sign.

“I’m glad that he’s feeling good,” Korkmaz said. “In practice, we are shooting together most of the time. I can see that he’s feeling more comfortable, more fresh-minded. I think he reset himself and then he’s ready to knock down those 3s in the regular season.”

Player grades: Tyrese Maxey continues to dominate, Sixers beat Cavs

The Philadelphia 76ers continued their preseason schedule on Monday when they took a trip to The Land to visit the Cleveland Cavaliers. The exhibition schedule is a time for growth and team building and even though Joel Embiid wasn’t available, the Sixers still saw some growth.

Tyrese Maxey continues to be an absolute terror on the offensive end as he finished with 19 points in 25 minutes. He was terrific in this one being able to set the tone on the offensive end as the Sixers knocked off the Cavs 113-97 to improve to 3-0 in the preseason.

James Harden added 11 points, six rebounds, and four assists, De’Anthony Melton had seven points, six rebounds, and five assists, Tobias Harris had 12 and seven boards, and Danuel House Jr. added 10. Doc Rivers gives honest assessment of Matisse Thybulle’s shooting

Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers gives an honest assessment of Matisse Thybulle’s shooting progression.

WILMINGTON, Del. — The Philadelphia 76ers convened at their G League affiliate’s home in Delaware on Saturday to have an intrasquad scrimmage as they continue to push toward opening night in Boston on Oct. 18.

The Sixers have high expectations as they chase a title, led by their star duo, Joel Embiid and James Harden. The two will be the engine that drives the machine in the City of Brotherly Love, but they will need help to get it done.

The Sixers brought in some additions that figure to help, but they will need internal improvement from players such as Matisse Thybulle as well. The defensive star out of Washington has established himself as one of the top defenders in the league, but his offense continues to lag.

Thybulle worked hard on his jumper all offseason, but he is 1-for-6 from deep to begin preseason play. However, coach Doc Rivers is happy that he is continuing to work as hard as he can on the shot. The work will eventually pay off.

“Just saying, it’s a work in progress,” said Rivers on Saturday. “All we can ask is he puts in the time, and I think he’s worked as hard as anybody. He put in a lot of time when it’s shot, but there’s so many things that go into it when you’re not a good shooter.”

The biggest thing with Thybulle is he’s at least taking those shots. He is at least not getting discouraged by a few misses and he will continue to grow as a shooter and help the Sixers succeed on the offensive end.

“Learning to be that learning to ignore misses and know that you put in the work and keep shooting,” Rivers added. “The problem is you miss a couple and then you start questioning. You stop shooting you stop and so far has not done that and that’s what we want him to do.”

As Rivers mentioned, this will continue to be a work in progress with Thybulle. The important part is, he is continuing to take open looks and he isn’t hesitating. Eventually, those shots will fall.

The Sixers will continue their preseason schedule on Monday when they travel to take on the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Matisse Thybulle changing his style of play on both ends for Sixers

Philadelphia 76ers wing player Matisse Thybulle is looking to change his style on both ends of the floor, not just his offense.

CHARLESTON, S.C.–In order for the Philadelphia 76ers to have success in the 2022-23 season, there will be a lot of reliance on their new additions as well as their star duo of Joel Embiid and James Harden in order to push themselves forward.

However, there will also be a lot of expectations around their mainstays in order to push them forward.

Matisse Thybulle is one of those players. He is set to enter his fourth season and while he has established himself as one of the top defenders in the league, he still needs to make a statement on the offensive end in order to keep his job.

Embiid and the Sixers are noticing a different Thybulle in training camp and the defensive stud out of Washington promises to change things on both ends of the floor.

Sixers discuss riding out Hurricane Ian while in South Carolina for camp

The Philadelphia 76ers discuss riding out Hurricane Ian while in South Carolina for training camp.

CHARLESTON, S.C.–The Philadelphia 76ers decided to pack things up and head down to Charleston, SC for training camp to begin the 2022-23 season. There are a couple of reasons behind their thought process such as wanting to build team chemistry and learning the American history of Charleston.

The team chemistry part took front and center on Friday as Hurricane Ian blew through the city and the surrounding areas. There was heavy rain and heavy winds that caused power outages on the South Carolina shore.

Rather than running away back to Philadelphia, coach Doc Rivers and the team stayed and rode out the storm as a team. With the skies cleared up and the team able to get back to practice, they discussed their time together amid the storm.

Joel Embiid, Sixers notice a different Matisse Thybulle to begin camp

Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers notice a different Matisse Thybulle on both ends of the floor to begin training camp.

CHARLESTON, S.C.–The Philadelphia 76ers got back to work on Thursday as they continued training camp in Charleston, SC. The Sixers have a ton of expectations for the coming season as they improved their depth and supporting cast around the star duo of Joel Embiid and James Harden.

Even with the new additions, some of the mainstays will have to step up and play a part in this team’s success in the future.

Matisse Thybulle will be one of those important mainstays as he gets set for his fourth season in the league. He has already established himself as one of the better perimeter defenders in the league, but it is on the offensive end where he ahs got to make some strides in order to improve.

Thybulle revealed that he was working on his shot all summer and so far to begin camp, Embiid, and his teammates are noticing a difference.
