REPORT: Maryland Football out of hotel quarantine, but doesn’t practice on Monday

Emily Giambalvo reported on Monday that Maryland has moved out of the hotel they had been quarantining in since Wednesday.

We are still unsure of the status of Saturday’s match-up between Michigan State and Maryland, but we did get an update on the Terps’ on Monday.

Emily Giambalvo, who covers Maryland athletics for The Washington Post, reported some welcoming news on Monday morning that Maryland has moved out of the hotel they had been quarantining in since Wednesday. However, the Terps didn’t return to practice on Monday.

As you probably know by now, Maryland Football had to shut down all team activities last week after a number of players tested positive for COVID-19. The outbreak resulted in the Terps having to cancel their match-up with Ohio State, and has left many wondering if this Saturday’s game against MSU will take place or not.

The news from Giambalvo on Monday is a relatively positive sign for this week’s game, but we’ll still have to monitor where things stand in the next few days. If Maryland is still unable to practice on Tuesday or Wednesday, then odds are this game will not take place on Saturday.

Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. EST in College Park, Md. on Saturday. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.

MSU vs. Maryland Game Details Announced

Game details for Nov. 21’s match-up between Michigan State and Maryland were announced on Sunday.

[jwplayer xwcRkXEd]

The noon kickoffs just keep on coming for Michigan State football this year.

Kickoff has been set at 12 p.m. EST for next week’s match-up between Michigan State and Maryland in College Park, Md. All five of MSU’s games this season have been at noon.

The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.

As Graham Couch of The Lansing State Journal pointed out, Saturday’s game against the Terps is currently in jeopardy after a COVID-19 outbreak hit Maryland this past week. The Terps were forced to halt all football activities and had to cancel their game against Ohio State. We should hopefully know the status of this match-up in the next few days.

Following Saturday’s loss to Indiana, Spartans head coach Mel Tucker was asked about next week’s game potentially being canceled but he said they’ll be approaching this game like any other and not worry about that possibility.

“We’re expecting to play,” Tucker said during the post game press conference. “I don’t know what their situation is. I’m not sure why they are playing or not playing. We’re going to be prepared to play as long as we can meet the thresholds in terms of players available and the COVID numbers that are set forth by the Big Ten. As long as we can stay within those numbers and field a team, we’re going to play. We’re going to prepare to play until we’re told differently. We need to play football.”

Maryland currently is 2-1 on the season with back-to-back wins over Minnesota and Penn State. The Terps’ lone loss was a season-opener blowout against Northwestern.

MSU vs. Maryland in jeopardy after COVID-19 outbreak hits Terps

Maryland announced eight players have tested positive for COVID-19 and have halted all football activities.

[jwplayer xwcRkXEd]

We knew this was a possibility and now it looks like it could be happening — COVID-19 potentially causing the cancellation of a Michigan State football game.

The Spartans are scheduled to head to College Park, Md. next Saturday (Nov. 21) for a battle against Maryland, however, that game is now in jeopardy after the Terps announced a COVID-19 outbreak has halted all football activities. That includes Maryland’s match-up against Ohio State this upcoming Saturday, which has officially been canceled.

A total of eight players have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the release from Maryland. Here’s what Maryland Athletic Direct Damon Evans said in today’s press release:

“There is nothing more important than the health and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches and staff. We realize that this news is disappointing to all of the Maryland fans out there who were looking forward to the Terps taking on an outstanding Ohio State team, but the responsible thing for us to do is pause football activities, given the number of positive cases currently in our program.”

Wisconsin is the only other Big Ten team that has been forced to cancel games this season due to COVID-19. The Badgers’ outbreak occurred shortly after their season-opening win against Illinois on Oct. 24 and resulted in the cancelation of their next two games. Wisconsin is set to finally return to the field this week against Michigan.

If Maryland is in the same situation as Wisconsin, odds are next week’s match-up between the Spartans and Terps will be canceled. There are no definitive reports or signs at this time that’ll be the case, but as of right now things don’t look good.

Ohio State vs. Maryland game time announced

The Big Ten has announced the kick-off time for Ohio State vs. Maryland on November 14.

[jwplayer qftDXXuy-er0jUifI]

Ohio State will take on Rutgers this Saturday and the Buckeyes are firmly focused on the Scarlet Knights. However, that doesn’t mean you, the fans, can’t get your schedules set for the coming weeks.

Earlier this week, the Big Ten announced that the Ohio State game against Maryland on November, 14 will kick-off at 3:30 pm Eastern. The game will be aired on The Big Ten Network.

Maryland has been a perennial doormat since joining the Big Ten in 2014. However, there is reason for hope in College Park after seeing Taulia Tagovaiola throw for 394 yards and three touchdowns in an overtime win against Minnesota this past week.

The last time Ohio State traveled to Maryland, the Buckeyes won in a shootout by a score of 52-51. But this is a very different Ohio State football team, so go ahead and mark your calendars for a mid-afternoon tilt as the Bucks march toward a Big Ten title and much, much more.

Saints try out two defensive backs after losing rookie to injured reserve

The New Orleans Saints tried out free agent cornerbacks Christopher Fredrick and Kemon Hall after rookie Tino Ellis went to injured reserve.

[jwplayer b7VcnCYu-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints reported two free agent visits on Saturday’s daily NFL transactions wire: cornerbacks Christopher Fredrick and Kemon Hall. So who are they?

Fredrick (listed at 5-foot-11 and 198 pounds) is an undrafted rookie out of Syracuse, where he started 43 consecutive games at cornerback. He was credited with 23 pass defenses (including eight interceptions) in 49 games played, as well as five fumbles (three forced, two recovered). What’s interesting is that Fredrick also ran with the special teams units throughout his Syracuse career, experience which should help his odds of catching on with an NFL roster.

Hall (listed at 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds) is a North Texas product who spent the 2019 season on the Minnesota Vikings practice squad, but hasn’t yet found a team in 2020. After transferring from Itawamba Community College in Mississippi, he started 25 straight games in the Conference USA and recorded 28 passes defensed (6 of which were interceptions), with a forced fumble thrown in for good measure. That suggests some real playmaking ability, but he’ll have to have wowed the Saints in his free agent tryout to get a shot on the 80-man roster.

But why were the Saints bringing in more help for the secondary, which has impressed in training camp practices? It’s possible they simply need more bodies to help round out the daily rotation after rookie cornerback Tino Ellis (Maryland) was designated to the injured reserve list earlier this week.

With Ellis out of action, that leaves the Saints with the following healthy cornerbacks:

  • Marshon Lattimore
  • Janoris Jenkins
  • P.J. Williams
  • Patrick Robinson
  • Justin Hardee
  • Johnson Bademosi
  • Keith Washington Jr. (rookie, West Virginia)

They haven’t signed anyone yet, but keep an eye out in case either of these free agents ends up joining the Saints for the rest of training camp. Earlier this week, they signed reserve tight end Ethan Wolf after a similar workout session.

Former Alabama QB Taulia Tagovailoa, younger brother of Tua, transfers to a Big Ten opponent

The former Bama QB has a new home in the Big Ten

[lawrence-newsletter]Former Alabama QB Taulia Tagovailoa is headed to the Big Ten Conference. The younger brother of Tua Tagovailoa, the 2020 first round NFL draft pick of the Miami Dolphins, is transferring to Maryland he announced Friday.

A consensus four-star recruit coming out of high school, Tagovailoa originally chose Alabama over the likes of Florida and LSU.

Last season at Alabama, the younger Tagovailoa appeared in five games while playing sparingly in those appearances. He finished the year 9-12 passing with 100 total yards and a touchdown. The news comes just a couple of months after former Maryland QB Tyrrell Pigrome transferred from the program to Western Kentucky, leaving a spot open at the position.

Wisconsin will see Maryland on the road on October 24, 2020.

Alabama QB Taulia Togovailoa makes transfer decision

Yesterday, Alabama football QB Taulia Tagovailoa announced on Twitter where he’ll attend in the fall. Details here

Alabama sophomore quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Crimson Tide legend Tua, has decided to transfer to Maryland.

Tagovailoa entered the transfer portal on May 8, per Matt Zenitz of AL.com, and posted his official statement declaring his signing with the Terps on Twitter yesterday.

Alabama still looks to be in good hands, though, with Mac Jones returning as a red-shirt junior. He was chosen to take the field over Taulia when his brother went down with the hip injury last season.

Why Maryland, though? The Terps went 3-9 last season, 1-8 in the Big 10, but head coach Michael Locksley spent three years under Nick Saban at Alabama before taking the Maryland job in 2018. It seems he still has some connections in Tuscaloosa.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Maryland Terrapins Offense 3 Things To Know

It looked like Maryland had something. It started out the season with 79 points against Howard, which didn’t seem like a big deal until it followed it up with a 63-point hit on Syracuse. And that was about it.

Take out those two games, and the 48-7 win over Rutgers, and the Terps averaged 12.5 points over the other nine games.

There weren’t any third down conversions, the O couldn’t control the tempo, and the offensive line got the quarterbacks crushed. This year’s offense is still undergoing a reboot, and it’s still going to take a whole lot of work.

Enter new offensive coordinators Joker Phillips and Scottie Montgomery, who’ll combine to jump-start the attack with more toughness for the ground game, while also trying to keep the quickened tempo.

– If it seems like Maryland has 14 different quarterbacks who have been around for 16 years, it’s because it hasn’t been able to settle on one who can 1) take over and 2) stay healthy. Former Virginia Tech starter Josh Jackson is the best talent and needs to rise up into the role after struggling way too much behind the bad line, but on the way is Alabama transfer Taulia Tagovailoa.

Tua’s little brother still has to get the all-clear from the NCAA to be eligible for this year, and the team needs him as a good backup option with Tyrrell Pigrome and Max Bortenschlager transferring.

The receiving corps is also being hammered by the transfer portal with four targets leaving, but DeJuan Ellis is a decent prospect coming in from Virginia Tech. Dontay Demus and Brian Cobbs are a good 1-2 punch, and TE Chigoziem Okonkwo is a decent pass catcher who needs the ball more. On the way is Rakim Jarrett, a five-star talent who’ll soon be the team’s star for the passing attack.

Running back is a question mark. Javon Leake and Anthony McFarlands were excellent backs who were wasted in last year’s debacle – they left early for the NFL. Senior Tayon Fleet-Davis is the presumptive No. 1 after finishing third on the team with 265 yards and two scores, but new recruits Peny Boone and Isaiah Jacobs are expected to play an instant role.

But the offensive line has to do its part.

Three starters are back, starting with sophomore tackles Jaelyn Duncan and Marcus Minor who have to be far, far stronger after taking their lumps. With guard a massive question mark, the interior should is a concern as long as senior Johnny Jordan is okay at center after missing time late last year.
