Ohio State with four players named to Walter Camp Award watch list

Just four?!? That’s a lot of scarlet and gray on the list. #GoBucks

It’s safe to say that the [autotag]Walter Camp Award[/autotag] is extremely high on [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] players entering the 2023 season.

Why is that? Well, it announced its preseason watch list of 45 total players, and the Buckeyes have four of those, the most for any one school in the country.

If you didn’t know, the award is given annually to the best player in the country as judged by the Walter Camp Foundation. Last year USC quarterback [autotag]Caleb Williams[/autotag] took home the honors. The last Ohio State player to win the Walter Camp Award was quarterback [autotag]Troy Smith[/autotag] in 2006, who also took home the Heisman also.

Find out below which four Buckeyes made their preseason watch list.

Two Ohio State receivers make Biletnikoff preseason watch list

What are the odds that Harrison Jr., or Egbuka takes this thing home? #GoBucks

Many will tell you that Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. was the best receiver in college football last season, even if he didn’t win the Biletnikoff Award that is supposedly handed out to the country’s best receiver, regardless of position, annually (don’t blame this voter, he checked the box for Harrison Jr.).

He will have another chance of course this fall. And so far, so good, as both Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka were two of 49 names named to the preseason Biletnikoff Award announced Monday.

The Biletnikoff Award is handed out by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation and has been awarded every year since 1994. To date, only one Ohio State player has been honored, and it was in just year two of the award when Terry Glenn won it in 1995.

Of any of the awards out there that Ohio State players have been mentioned for with these watch lists, you have to feel pretty good about this one with two of the best receivers in college football wearing the scarlet and gray.

Don’t be surprised if Harrison Jr. and Egbuka both are finalists and have a shot at taking it home.

Marvin Harrison Jr. lands another ‘sweet’ NIL deal

Marvin Harrison Jr. continues to use NIL to his advantage. #GoBucks

Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr. broke out on the football field in 2022. As a result of his stellar play on the field, he’s now producing off of it as well. Harrison has had a plethora of endorsement deals coming in 2023, and now the OSU receiver can add another “sweet” deal to the list.

Cincinnati-based Grippo’s has released a Hot Honey BBQ flavor potato chip based on Harrison’s sweet and savory play. Harrison announced the partnership with the chip company on his personal X (formerly Twitter) account.

Grippo’s brand is sold in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. However, Harrison also announced that the Hot Honey BBQ with his face on the bag will only be sold in the Ohio region. The product should be available for sale in local stores soon.

If the flavor is as good as Harrison’s play on the field, this might become a new fan favorite and a must at Buckeye tailgates and pregame parties.

Top ten Ohio State wide receivers over the last ten years

Who’d we miss? Who do you think should be No. 1? #GoBucks

We have started a new series here at Buckeyes Wire of ranking the top players at each position for Ohio State over the last 10 years. Up next: wide receivers.

No program in college football has had as much talent at wide receiver in recent memory as Ohio State. This is evidenced by the fact that this list is being expanded from a top five to a top ten list.

The list includes wide receivers who lasted played for Ohio State in the 2013 season or later. Many of these players have gone on to become stars at the NFL level, but this list is based on what they did for the Buckeyes.

This was a difficult ranking to produce as there are many wide receivers deserving of praise, but here’s how it all shook out.

Marvin Harrison Jr. partners with the Ronald McDonald House in round up campaign

Round up for a good cause when you stop into your local Central Ohio McDonalds. #GoBucks

Ohio State star wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. needs no introduction, but he sure is making the rounds and appearances for charity and name, image and likeness opportunities as of late.

The latest of those is a partnership with the Cohesion Foundation collective and the Ronald McDonald House. Harrison Jr. has been announced as an official teammate of the families at the RMDH. As part of that agreement, Harrison Jr. is asking for you to round up at your local McDonald’s when you visit in Central Ohio.

It’s an effort to help families dealing with hospital stays for children stay close while they receive treatment, and that’s something we should all be able to get behind, just like Harrison Jr. gets behind opposing defenses.

Here’s the promotional spot the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio put together to help raise awareness for this effort.

Five Buckeyes featured on 247 Sports’ Top 20 Big Ten Players ranking

Who was left off? Who should be higher? #GoBucks

With Big Ten media day starting on Wednesday, there’s a lot of buzz and excitement around Big Ten football right now.

In light of this, three 247Sports college football analysts convened to rank the top 20 players in the Big Ten. These three analysts include Blake Brockermeyer, Chris Hummer, and Robbie Weinstein.

Coming into the season, the Big Ten appears to be as strong as it’s been in years. In the East division Ohio State and Michigan enter the season as two of the biggest national championship contenders. Penn State projects to be a top-ten team with a lot of talent returning.

The West division projects to improve as the Luke Fickell era kicks off in Wisconsin, Iowa looks to get back to the conference title game, Illinois looks to build upon an 8-win season last year, and Minnesota also projects to figure into how the West will be won.

With a lot of talented players in the conference, this turned out to be an impressive list. The Buckeyes, along with Penn State had the most players to appear in these rankings with five each. Here are the five Buckeyes who made the list.

Photos of Ryan Day and Ohio State players at Big Ten media days

Some of the best photos of Ryan Day and the three players at Big Ten media days Wednesday. #GoBucks

The first day of 2023 Big Ten media days has come and gone with another day set to come to a high-definition television or streaming device near you on Thursday.

Since we are an Ohio State homer site here at Buckeyes Wire, we were more interested in all of the pomp and circumstance and festivities of Wednesday than what will take place on Thursday. Although, I’m always game for an awkward Jim Harbaugh press conference so I’ll be tuning in for that tomorrow (will he wear a hat with a suit again?).

To that end, Buckeye head coach Ryan Day took his turn at the podium on the grand stage and spent more time at a smaller table with reporters afterward. He was accompanied by three OSU players, Marvin Harrison Jr., Cade Stover, and J.T. Tuimoloau, and all four were dressed to the nines.

We had photographers on hand in Indy and thought we’d share some of the best photos of the Ohio State contingent for your scrolling and viewing pleasure.

Marvin Harrison Jr. receives preseason Big Ten honor

Marvelous Marv is being recognized once again before the season. #GoBucks

As a friendly reminder, the Big Ten does not do an official preseason Big Ten team like some other conferences. Instead, it highlights preseason honorees: five players from the West Division and five from the East.

One could make an argument there needs to be more from the East and maybe fewer from the West, but I guess good on the conference for the effort for equality.

One of the Big Ten players that received preseason honors this year, to no surprise, is Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison, Jr. He is the only player from the Buckeyes that received the honor. Michigan had two among the East honorees and Minnesota had a couple from the West.

Here’s the list of the 10 players announced as Big Ten preseason honorees:

EAST

Taulia Tagovailoa, QB, Maryland

Blake Corum, RB, Michigan

J.J. McCarthy, QB, Michigan

Marvin Harrison Jr., WR, Ohio State

Olumuyiwa Fashanu, OL, Penn State

WEST

Jer’Zhan Newton, DL, Illinois

Cooper DeJean, DB, Iowa

Brevyn Spann-Ford, TE, Minnesota

Tyler Nubin, DB, Minnesota

Braelon Allen, RB, Wisconsin

This list obviously doesn’t mean much until the season begins and we see how things shake out, but it is a nod to what these players have done to date in the league. It’ll be fun to see how each plays this fall and who might surprise.

Marvin Harrison Jr. enters unique NIL deal that makes sense

This NIL deal makes a lot of sense. #GoBucks

Of all the current Ohio State football players, the one that is perhaps the most marketable when it comes to name, image and likeness is all-everything receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.

Not only is the talented, third-year player the son of a Hall-of-Famer, but he’s also one of the most recognized and flashy players in all of college football. Heck, last season he made almost too many highlight-worthy catches to keep track of. He was also seen wearing an Apple Watch and Louis Vitton cleats at one point during the season in 2022.

Just recently, Harrison Jr. partnered with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson on deal with his energy drink, and now there’s another opportunity the college football’s best receiver has entered in according to an announcement on his Twitter page.

Yes, it appears as though Harrison Jr. has a name, image and likeness deal with Dr. Teal’s Epsom salt. It is reportedly good for the entire season, but we’re details of the valuation was not immediately known.

I mean, it makes sense for a star football player to do a deal with Epsom salt. After all, we’re sure Harrison Jr. and his teammates pour this stuff in by the gallons after game days with all the bumps and bruises that comes from a big-time college football game and season.

Marvin Harrison Jr. weighs in on best wide receiver room of all time debate

Tell us a receiver room that had more talent than the one Harrison Jr. votes as the best ever. #GoBucks

A common debate in college football circles is who is wide receiver U? A number of programs have had success producing star wide receivers for the NFL and laid claim to the title through the years.

LSU immediately comes to mind as a strong contender for both WRU and the best wide receiver room of all time. Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase starred on the team’s 2019 national championship team and quickly became stars in the NFL. Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry, who played for the Tigers from 2011-2013, became stars at the next level as well.

Alabama has had a strong track record of producing star receivers for the NFL. Throughout Nick Saban’s tenure, the Crimson Tide have produced eight first-round receivers, most of which have had stellar careers on Sundays. This list includes Julio Jones, Amari Cooper, Calvin Ridley, Henry Ruggs, Jerry Jeudy, Jaylen Waddle, Devonta Smith and Jameson Williams.

While those are very impressive track records of producing NFL receivers, many would argue that no school has done as good of a job of producing receivers in recent memory as Ohio State.

In fact, current superstar receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. recently replied to a Twitter post about the best wide receiver of all time, claiming it is in fact the Buckeyes.

Harrison Jr.’s answer of the Ohio State 2021 spring room is a great answer and hard to argue against because the room was absolutely loaded with top-tier talent.

Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave went on to be the No. 10 and 11 picks in the 2022 draft and had very strong rookie seasons. Spring of 2021 was prior to Jameson Williams’ transfer to Alabama: He was the No. 12 pick in that draft.

Smith-Njigba who broke the Big Ten receiving yards record the following season is also a part of this room. He was a first-round pick in the 2022 draft, coming off the board at No. 20 to the Seattle Seahawks.

That is four receivers who were first-round picks, and, somehow, there will almost certainly be two more. Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka headline the next draft’s wide receiver class and are projected locks to be first-rounders themselves.

If that happens, it would mean six future first-round picks at wide receiver were in the same room in the spring of 2021. That is quite remarkable to think about and gives the Buckeyes a strong claim to be considered WRU.
