Notre Dame defensive lineman Justin Ademilola declares for NFL draft

Good luck, Justin (and Jayson).

One of the unsung heroes of Notre Dame’s defense the past few years has been lineman [autotag]Justin Ademilola[/autotag]. More attention has gone to twin brother [autotag]Jayson Ademilola[/autotag]. Still, he is just as fierce a defender, and he’s ready to test his abilities at the next level. Just as Jayson did Wednesday, Justin is declaring for the NFL draft, an announcement he made on social media:

In five seasons with the Irish, Justin recorded 108 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. He also recovered three fumbles, forced another one and deflected one pass. He reached his career high of six tackles twice this past season, ironically in the Irish’s two home losses to Marshall and Stanford. His lone 1.5-sack game was in 2021 at Virginia.

Best of luck to both Justin and Jayson as they prepare themselves for the professional game. Irish fans should be grateful that they both stayed with the program for as long as they could. That’s something that never can be repaid.

Marshall vs UConn Myrtle Beach Bowl 5 Things To Know

Myrtle Beach Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

How did Jim Mora Jr. not make every Coach of the Year list? Before 2022, UConn won exactly ten games since 2015, hadn’t had a winning season since 2010, didn’t play in 2020, and a 2019 victory over UMass was the lone win against an FBS team since the middle of the 2017 season. Mora’s team shocked Fresno State as it went on a 5-1 run to get bowl eligible before dropping the regular season finale. This has been a wildly successful year no matter what happens here.

It’s been a crazy season for Marshall. It made a massive splash with a shocking win over Notre Dame, and then it promptly followed it up with a loss to Bowling Green as part of a rough 2-4 run with a tough November looming. The switch was flipped, the defense took things up a notch, and the Herd closed out 4-0.

For years Marshall was a bowl season given. It lost its first two, and then from 1998 to 2018 it went 12-1, with the only loss coming to Cincinnati in the 2004 Fort Worth. Along that ride was a 16-10 win over UConn in the 2015 St. Petersburg. Now it’s on a three-bowl losing streak including a 36-21 rocking from Louisiana in last year’s New Orleans Bowl.

It’s just the seventh bowl appearance in the history of UConn football. It’s 3-3 with the last win coming over South Carolina in the 2009 PapaJohn.com Bowl. The only bowl between this and the 2010 Fiesta loss to Oklahoma was that loss to Marshall. Yeah, this game means something.

The Myrtle Beach Bowl is only in its third season, but the first two games at least were interesting. It’s become a landing place for good Group of Five programs, and it’s got the college football day all to itself on a Monday afternoon. Appalachian State ran wild in a 56-28 win over North Texas in the inaugural game, and Tulsa’s 30-17 win over Old Dominion last year was more entertaining than the final score.

CFN Bowl Expert Picks: Dec 16-19 | Dec 20-27

Why Marshall Will Win The Myrtle Beach Bowl

It’s a nice UConn team, but it’s about to run into a brick wall – not literally, but almost.

Marshall might not have a high-powered offense, but the run defense has been tremendous all year long, finishing fifth in the nation allowing just 88 yards per game. No one was able to get to 200 on this bunch – not Notre Dame, not Appalachian State, not Coastal Carolina – and UConn has to run well to win.

The Huskies were able to pull off a few wins when the ground game wasn’t flying, but the O line allows way too many plays behind the line, third downs are almost impossible to convert, and the passing attack does nothing down the field – UConn is dead last in the nation in yards per completion.

On the other side, Marshall is 6-0 when running for 200 yards or more. UConn is 1-6 when allowing more than 155 yards, but ….

Why UConn Will Win The Myrtle Beach Bowl

The running game really could work.

Granted, it cranked up the big yards against some of the worst run defenses in America, but with time to prepare and get everyone healthy again, the offense is about to hit Marshall with a wave of young backs.

Zion Turner is a dangerous young quarterback who can get on the move, the running backs should push for close to five yards per carry, and it should be able to slow the game down a bit.

The UConn defense doesn’t do too much to get behind the line, but it doesn’t take much to disrupt the Marshall attack. The passing game isn’t great, the O is miserable at converting drives into points, and the line is way too leaky.

However …

NEXT: What’s Going To Happen, Marshall vs UConn Prediction, Myrtle Beach Bowl History

Tale of the Tape: Team Stats – Notre Dame vs. USC

This could be problematic.

Notre Dame really will need to lean into its strengths to upset USC. The defense and the running game appear to be the Irish’s best hope in making that happen. It also would serve them well to limit the penalties once again, something they’ve done very well to this point in the season. If that script flips, they’re in real trouble.

The Trojans’ offense is the most potent the Irish’s defense will see this year. They’re among the very best in the country in a lot of areas when they have the ball. If that’s not scary enough, no program has a better turnover margin. That could spell trouble for an Irish offense that’s been decent but also shaky at times, which led to the losses against Marshall and Stanford.

Anyone who looks at this chart might be intimidated, but there is no major challenge this year’s Irish has refused to meet. If they surprise everyone else Saturday, we won’t be surprised because we’ve seen it.

Appalachian State vs Marshall Game Preview

Why Appalachian State Will Win

Yeah, the Marshall run defense has been special lately. It’s about to see something different with the Appalachian State ground game.

That doesn’t mean the Mountaineers can’t stall – they sure did in the loss to Coastal Carolina – but when they’re on, forget it.

5-1 when they run for more than 90 yards, they’re going to keep forcing the issue against a Marshall defensive front that’s totally dominant against good ground attacks.

However, thanks to Chase Brice, Appalachian State can throw, too.

10 Best Picks Against The Spread

Why Marshall Will Win

The run defense really is just that special.

James Madison stopped Appalachian State cold, Texas State was able to come up with a ton of big plays, and Coastal Carolina did the job.

Yeah, Appalachian State ran well on Texas A&M and ripped through North Carolina, but the Marshall run defense is just that good.

As long as the offense can limit the turnovers and get its own ground game going …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams are 5-4, and both teams are struggling to get over the finish line and get bowl eligible, but Marshall has to win two of its last three.

Yeah, the Marshall run defense has been incredible at home, but two of the best performances came at home against FCS teams. Louisiana and Coastal Carolina were able to win even though they stalled.

Can Marshall score enough? Appalachian State is 5-0 when allowing 28 points or fewer and 0-4 when allowing more.

Marshall only scored more than 26 against one FBS team, Bowling Green. Appalachian State is better.

What the experts are predicting: Notre Dame vs. Navy

There seems to be a consensus here.

Notre Dame and Navy have one of the oldest and most famous rivalries in college football. While it may not have the sacredness and prestige of the Army-Navy game, it remains a contest both sides look forward to every year. As we’ve seen over the past couple of years, seemingly only a pandemic and the disappearance of college football altogether can stop this annual meeting.

Let’s look at what some college football experts, including fellow College Wire sites, are predicting for this game:

Coastal Carolina vs Marshall Game Preview

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

Marshall needs takeaways to win this, and Coastal Carolina likely won’t oblige.

The Herd were able to come up with three or more takeaways in three of the last four games including five in the stunning win over James Madison. Most famously, the D generate three interceptions in the win at Notre Dame.

Coastal Carolina had a turnover problem against Buffalo earlier in the season, but that’s been about it with just three giveaways in the last four games.

Combine that with the efficiency of the Chanticleer passing game and the inconsistencies on the Marshall offensive side, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Marshall Will Win

The Marshall defense has been just that good. The problems overall have been on the offensive side that got stuffed by the great Troy defense and turned it over too much in the loss to Bowling Green.

Marshall is No. 1 in the nation in third down stops, the pass rusher has been fantastic, and as air tight as Coastal Carolina is, Marshall is just that good at taking the ball away. It has to give the O a slew of easy chances and short fields because …

What’s Going To Happen

There’s just no downfield passing game on a regular basis coming from the Marshall offense.

The defense is going hold up and keep this close, but the Coastal Carolina passing attack – coming off a strange loss to Old Dominion – will be too efficient and too timely with its good plays on key drives. It’ll also push the big plays more than the Herd secondary is used to.

Tale of the Tape: Team Stats – Notre Dame vs. Syracuse

Are you confident that the Irish can win this game?

You just never know which Notre Dame team is going to show up. Sure, the Irish have beaten many of the teams they were supposed to, but losses to Marshall and Stanford have caused people to have doubts about what the team is capable of. Now, they have to face a quality Syracuse team on the road with only a few real advantages in the matchup. Will playing to strengths such as penalties and time of possession pay off, or will those things be irrelevant to the outcome?

The Orange come into this game knowing how to keep points off the scoreboard, win the turnover battle and do well in the red zone on both ends. They weren’t undefeated before last week’s loss to Clemson for nothing. Many have argued that the loss makes them seem more vulnerable, meaning the Irish are facing them at the right time. Until this game ends though, the Orange at least have the overall statistical edge.

Marshall vs James Madison Game Preview

Why James Madison Will Win

What the heck happened to Marshall?

It stunned Notre Dame with a brilliant defensive performance, three takeaways, and a ground game that stepped up and dominated, and … poof. It all went away.

Sort of.

The defense is still solid against the run, but the offense can’t seem to find any semblance of a groove. It couldn’t do anything against the great Troy defense, it couldn’t stop screwing up against Bowling Green, and last week it simply couldn’t move against Louisiana.

It’s not going to start running against the best run defense in the country. James Madison has allowed a grand total of 217 rushing yards so far this year and gave up just 12 against Georgia Southern last week.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Marshall Will Win

James Madison finally dropped its first loss of the year because Georgia Southern threw for 578 yards in a while shootout that was almost as fun as that Alabama-Tennessee thing.

As good as the Dukes are they’re not above turning it over, giving it away four times in the loss. Marshall needs to feed off that.

For all the problems and issues, the Herd have generated multiple takeaways in four of the six games, winning three of them.

Now the Herd have to get the passing game going and …

– Predictions, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Nope.

A few takeaways will keep Marshall in the game, but it’s not running on the Duke defensive front, and there isn’t enough of a passing attack to make up for it.

Marshall won’t be a total pushover, but James Madison will make up for last week’s gaffe.

Louisiana vs Marshall Game Preview

Why Louisiana Will Win

It’s been a grind with three straight losses after a 2-0 start, but the team had ten days off to get ready for the game that needs to get the season going.

Marshall’s offense isn’t going to go off. There’s little downfield passing game partly because the leaky offensive line isn’t giving the backfield enough time.

The Louisiana defense has to pressure Herd QB Henry Colombi, and it has to keep taking the ball away.

The offense needs as many breaks as it can get, and the Ragin’ Cajun D is helping with 14 takeaways – only USC is better than Louisiana in turnover margin.

However, lately …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Marshall Will Win

Louisiana is having a turnover problem.

The running game has to be better and the passing attack more consistent, but the mistakes – six in the last three games after not giving the ball away in the first two – are the issue. Marshall might be having its problems, but taking the ball away isn’t one of them.

The Herd have seven takeaways in the last two games and are a +6 on the season in turnover margin.

The Marshall run defense has been fantastic, it’s great at coming up with third down stops, and Louisiana is having a very, very hard time getting its D off the field.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t expect a whole lot of points.

Both teams want to control the game on the ground and rely on the defense and takeaways to pull this off. Marshall has been a bit more consistent, but it doesn’t do anything easily.

The Herd will hold up defensively against the struggling Ragin’ Cajun O, but they won’t be able to pull away. It’ll be another tough close loss for Louisiana, but it’ll make this a fight.

College football: How little known Lindenwood was one play from beating mighty Alabama

Have you ever heard of Lindenwood? And how did they almost beat Alabama?

Much is made of parity in college football and in recent years how if it isn’t Alabama or Clemson, then it isn’t great.  Georgia added their first national title in four decades last year and is in contention to do it again along with other powers like Ohio State, Michigan, the aforementioned Alabama and Georgia who are log-jammed towards the top of the national ratings.

Does parity in college football exist?

If you answered no to that question I am in complete agreement with you.

However, if you answered yes I don’t think you’re wrong either.

Perhaps I’ll do a thought-piece on that later that goes a little more in-depth of how I can see both being true, but with parity on our mind what would you say if I told you that little-known and currently 3-2 Lindenwood was one play away from beating the currently top-ranked in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, Alabama Crimson Tide?

You’d likely ask, “what’s a Lindenwood?” but let me explain.
