Army outlasts Navy with goal-line stand in final seconds

Army used a goal-line stand at the end of the fourth quarter to stop Navy

The annual Army-Navy game had a dramatic finish and a long review before the Cadets escaped with a 17-11 victory on Saturday at Gillette Stadium.

Navy trailed 17-3 in the fourth quarter but rallied. The Middies got a TD pass to close within nine and then drove the field after a terrible Army punt.

In the final seconds, Navy QB Tai Lavatai attempted to score on a quarterback sneak/push.

The call on the field was Lavatai was stopped short.

Officials reviewed the play and the second look went on and on before they announced the original call stood.

Army took a snap with three seconds left and QB Bryson Daily ran out of the back of the end zone for a Navy safety, closing the game as a six-point Army victory.

The points that proved to be the difference in the game came on a scoop-and-score by Kalib Fortner.

The Army linebacker stripped the ball from Lavatai’s grasp, picked it up after a bounce, and ran 44 yards for a TD that gave Army a 17-3 lead after the PAT.

Army won the Commander-in-Chief’s trophy as it beat Air Force earlier in the season. The Cadets improved to 6-6.

Navy dropped to 5-7.

College GameDay: See Lee Corso’s headgear pick for Army vs. Navy at Gillette Stadium

Lee Corso’s headgear pick for the 2023 Army-Navy game was hardly a surprise.

There’s only one FBS game in Week 15, and, of course, it’s the Army-Navy game, featuring some standout uniform looks from both teams, as usual.

That also meant that ESPN’s College GameDay show was in Foxborough, Massachusetts on Saturday ahead of the big game, and it had so much of the pageantry you’d expect from the annual Army-Navy game. This year, the game is at Gillette Stadium, and New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was the guest picker.

The Black Knights, on a three-game win streak, are 2.5-point favorites over the Midshipmen. But it should come as no surprise that when it came time for legendary broadcaster Lee Corso to make his weekly headgear pick, the former Navy defensive backs coach went with the Midshipmen: “Go Navy! Beat Army!”

Bill Belichick imitates Lee Corso with Army-Navy pick on ‘College GameDay’

Bill Belichick with this pick on the Army-Navy game

Amazing what a win on Thursday Night Football will do for one’s sense of humor.

Bill Belichick was the guest picker on “College GameDay” Saturday as the show was based in Foxborough, where the Army-Navy game was going to take place.

Belichick has a huge Navy background so when it came time to make a pick no surprise he went with the Middies.

And he channeled Lee Corso in making his choice.

Bill Belichick to be guest picker on ‘College GameDay’

‘College Gameday’s’ guest picker for Army-Navy will be Bill Belichick

With the Patriots playing on Thursday, and the Army-Navy game at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, ESPN’s “College GameDay” found the perfect spot for an ideal guest picker.

That’s right, New England coach Bill Belichick will be on the set before the service academies meet in their annual clash.

Belichick has numerous ties to the Naval Academy as were the subject of a 2017 Sports Illustrated article.

Army unveils some awesome ‘Dogface Soldiers’ uniforms for the 2023 Army-Navy game

These Army uniforms are NICE.

We’ve already seen the Navy’s sleek submarine-themed uniforms for the 2023 Army-Navy game, and now we’ve got some awesome threads for Army, honoring the 3rd Infantry Division.

The uniforms were revealed on Tuesday, and here’s the history behind them, per Army:The 3rd Infantry Division’s success hinged upon its ability to seize and maintain the initiative against a determined adversary in harsh and unforgiving terrain. The Dogface Soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division accomplished this feat through clear application of the U.S. Army’s characteristics of the offensive: surprise, concentration, audacity, and tempo.”

Longtime coach of annual Notre Dame rival not returning

A familiar face won’t be part of one rivalry game next season.

Ken Niumatalolo is the winningest coach in Navy history. However, his magic with the Midshipmen has worn off after four losing seasons in the past five years, a string interrupted only by an 11-2 campaign in 2019. A loss in the first overtime edition of the Army-Navy Game proved to be the last straw. The Naval Academy has opted to move on from Niumatalolo, who leaves the school with a 109-83 record.

As has been the case with pretty much every Midshipmen coach, Niumatalolo just couldn’t figure out Notre Dame. While he won two of his first three meetings with the Irish, the rivalry largely has lived up to its one-sided nature since then. Under Niumatalolo, the Midshipmen went 3-11 against the Irish, though they nearly made it 4-10 as they mounted a valiant comeback attempt during this past season.

We wish Niumatalolo well in his future endeavors, and we thank him for his contributions to the Notre Dame-Navy rivalry.

12 up-close photos of this year’s awesome Army-Navy game alternate uniforms

The Army-Navy game alternate uniforms never disappoint.

It’s bowl game time for most of the college football world, but before we get to that, the 123rd Army-Navy game is set for Saturday (3 p.m. ET, CBS) as the lone FBS game in Week 15.

This game is always fun and often full of surpriseslike when the two schools actually pass the ball — but one element of it that seldom disappoints is the uniforms. For this year’s edition, both Army and Navy have two stand-out alternate uniforms.

Navy is rolling with some awesome space-themed looks, which celebrate the 54 graduates who have been to space, while Army is honoring the soldiers of the 1st Armored Division during World War II.

Ahead of the 2022 Army-Navy game, here’s an up-close look at both teams’ alternate uniforms and the respective hype videos introducing them.

What the experts are predicting: Notre Dame vs. Navy

There seems to be a consensus here.

Notre Dame and Navy have one of the oldest and most famous rivalries in college football. While it may not have the sacredness and prestige of the Army-Navy game, it remains a contest both sides look forward to every year. As we’ve seen over the past couple of years, seemingly only a pandemic and the disappearance of college football altogether can stop this annual meeting.

Let’s look at what some college football experts, including fellow College Wire sites, are predicting for this game:

Navy LB Diego Fagot had no idea he’d get the snap on incredible fake punt conversion

“I didn’t know it was coming.”

The Midshipmen prevailed in Saturday’s Army-Navy game at MetLife Stadium, upsetting the Black Knights, 17-13, in a game that saw far more passes than any college football fan would expect from these two service academies.

Another unexpected moment from the game was Navy’s successful fake punt on 4th-and-1 early in the final quarter when the Midshipmen had a slight 14-13 lead.

And it even came as a surprise to linebacker Diego Fagot, who took the snap and successfully got the first down for his team.

As Navy lined up to punt from its own 34-yard line, punter Riley Riethman was all ready to go. Except the ball didn’t come to him and ended up in Fagot’s hands. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound linebacker then took off and stiff-armed a defender to the ground before hurdling over another, as he picked up the first down and then some.

He grabbed four yards on, unsurprisingly, his only carry of the game.

But the best part of this awesome fake-punt play is that it caught Fagot totally by surprise, and he showed off his lightning fast reflexes while making some moves. As he explained in his post-game interview with CBS, he had no idea the ball was coming to him.

He said:

“No one asked for it. The snapper, he just snapped it to me. I wasn’t expecting it. We weren’t expecting it. I didn’t know it was coming, honestly.”

In addition to Fagot’s reflexes, that was some incredibly fast thinking on his part after what turned out to be a “mistake” on the snap, as Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo later explained to CBS:

“It was a mistake. Sometimes, you gotta get lucky, and players make plays, and he made a great play.”

A mistake that turned into an awfully memorable play in this long-time rivalry matchup.
