Year-by-year salaries of Spartans head football coaches since 2012

Spartans Wire revisits the annual salaries of Michigan State’s head football coaches over the past decade.

College football head coaching salaries have skyrocketed in recent years as the arms race among the nation’s top programs has escalated rapidly.

The Michigan State Spartans are no exception. MSU has compiled a record of 83-42 over its past 10 seasons, but that success doesn’t come cheap.

In fact, the Spartans paid Mel Tucker in 2021 nearly three times what predecessor Mark Dantonio earned back in 2012.

To get an idea of how rapidly coaching salaries are rising, Spartans Wire lists the annual compensation paid out to Michigan State head football coaches over the past decade below.

Former Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio is considered one of the best in the last 50 years.

ESPN came out with a “Top 100 college football head coaches of the past 50 years” rankings this week, and Dantonio cracked the list. Dantonio came in at No. 48 on the list, with Bill Connelly writing the following about the Spartans’ all-time leader in wins:

“Dantonio rode an old-school, flash-free formula — run the ball, defend — to a 2013 Rose Bowl, a 2015 CFP bid and three straight top-10 finishes. And he did so at a school with two top-10 finishes in the 40 years before his arrival.”

Other former Spartans’ coaches on this list include Darryl Rogers (No. 82) and Nick Sabin (No. 1). Sabin, of course, has experienced most of his success that earned this top spot from his time at LSU and Alabama.

A pair of Michigan State legends were in attendance for Saturday’s spring game — Tom Izzo and Mark Dantonio.

Both Izzo and Dantonio were on hand for the Spartans’ annual spring game held on Saturday at Spartan Stadium. With a pair of Spartans greats in the building, it only made sense for the Big Ten Network to catch up with both Izzo and Dantonio.

Watch what both had to say when speaking with Darien Harris — who is Director of Player Engagement for Michigan State Football but was serving as BTN’s sideline reporter on Saturday — below:

LOOK: Former Michigan State coaches Mark Dantonio, Pat Narduzzi reconnect at Pitt

Mark Dantonio and Pat Narduzzi spent a few days together at Pitt, where Narduzzi is now the head coach.

I don’t think it’s much of a stretch to say that the best years of the Mark Dantonio era at Michigan State came with Pat Narduzzi at defensive coordinator. Narduzzi left in 2014 to become the head coach at Pitt, and it looks like Mark Dantonio came to visit him and his team this week. The two were photographed together on Thursday.

From 2007-14, helped lead the Spartans to two Big Ten Conference Championships, six wins over Michigan, a Rose Bowl victory and a win over Baylor in the Cotton Bowl.

You can see the picture of the two prolific coaches together below:

Report: Longtime MSU assistant coach Mike Tressel heading to Cincinnati

Longtime Michigan State assistant coach Mike Tressel is reportedly heading to Cincinnati to become the Bearcats’ new defensive coordinator.

[jwplayer mSDA56Ej]

Longtime Michigan State assistant coach Mike Tressel is reportedly heading to Cincinnati to become the Bearcats’ new defensive coordinator.

Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports tweeted the Tressel news on Monday afternoon. Tressel came to Michigan State from Cincinnati with former head coach Mark Dantonio in 2007, and has been with the program ever since.

Tressel was one of the few former Dantonio assistant coaches that remained on staff after new head coach Mel Tucker took over this past year. Tressel coached the safeties in 2020, and had previously served as a linebackers coach and defensive coordinator while at Michigan State.

Tressel had previously worked with Cincinnati head coach Luke Fickell at Ohio State in the early 2000s, according to Thamel.

Tressel will be the first assistant coach to leave the program since Tucker took over as the head coach last February.

Former MSU DT Raequan Williams promoted to Philadelphia Eagles active roster

Former Michigan State defensive tackle Raequan Williams has been promoted to the Philadelphia Eagles active roster.

[jwplayer YnMbAo01-PROpJzTY]

The Philadelphia Eagles have made another roster move that benefits a former Spartan this afternoon when the team announced Raequan Williams was promoted to the active roster. Earlier this week, Williams’ former Michigan State teammate Joe Bachie was signed by the organization.

This is the second time this season Williams has been promoted from the practice squad to the active roster. In his first stint, Williams played in two games for the Eagles, recording 3 tackles.

Following his redshirt season as a freshman, Raequan Williams spent four years as a key contributor on the Michigan State defensive line from 2016-2019. Williams was a member of the All-Big Ten team for his performance in his junior and senior seasons. Williams went undrafted in to 2020 NFL Draft but signed with the Eagles quickly after the draft.

The Philadelphia Eagles face off against the New Orleans Saints at 4:25 p.m. EST. on Sunday.

The Philadelphia Eagles made a roster move to improve their linebacker room this afternoon, signing former Michigan State linebacker Joe Bachie off of the New Orleans Saints practice squad. Bachie will join fellow Spartan teammate Raequan Williams on the Philadelphia active roster.

Joe Bachie was a critical member of the Michigan State defense from the moment he arrived on campus in 2016. Bachie played in 40 games over his four years in East Lansing, recording 285 tackles, 28 tackles for loss and 7 sacks. Bachie was also a two-time all-Big Ten team member.

The former Spartan captain went undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft, but was quickly picked up by the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent. Bachie has spent this season on the Saints practice squad.

The Philadelphia Eagles will face the New Orleans Saints this Sunday at 4:25 p.m. EST.
