Michigan State will have a familiar face in the stands for today’s season opener against Rutgers.  As first reported by Mike Mulholland, Mark Dantonio will be in the stands watching the Spartans today. This will be the first game Dantonio hasn’t coached the Spartans since 2006.  Dantonio will keep a close eye on how Mel Tucker has shaped this team since his departure in February.

Dantonio was able to post a career record of 114-57 and 69-39 in conference in the span of 13 years.  Dantonio announced his retirement after receiving his $4.3M longevity bonus from the university on February 4th.  He is the schools all-time winningest coach.  Shortly after, MSU announced that Mel Tucker would take over head coaching duties for the Spartans.  It’ll be fun to see how Tucker does with this team.

Report: Former Spartan DT Malik McDowell gets tryout with Dolphins

After numerous off-field incidents, Malik McDowell is potentially getting a second chance at an NFL career.

After numerous off-field incidents, former Michigan State Spartan defensive tackle Malik McDowell is potentially getting a second chance at an NFL career.

Field Yates of ESPN reported on Wednesday that the Miami Dolphins are giving McDowell a tryout.

McDowell was a second round pick by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2017 NFL Draft but has yet to play a down in the league after his career was derailed by off-field incidents — starting with an ATV crash shortly after he was drafted. Injuries from that crash eventually led to McDowell being waived by the Seahwaks in 2018, and McDowell has ran into legal trouble since then, including being arrested for fighting an officer in 2019. That incident led to McDowell being sentenced to three months in jail last November.

McDowell played at Michigan State from 2014 to 2016, racking up 88 total tackles, 24.5 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and one interception — that was also returned for a touchdown — in 32 career games.

As Yates pointed out in his tweet, talent has never been an issue for McDowell so if he’s gotten his off the field issues under control then there’s a chance he could have an impact for the Dolphins.

Report: MSU’s Mark Dantonio agrees to ‘indefinite’ furlough

Dantonio stepped down as MSU’s head coach in February, but remained within the athletic department to work on a variety of special projects

[jwplayer TkR436JB]

Former Michigan State football coach Mark Dantonio is reportedly on an indefinite furlough from his role in the athletic department, and has been for nearly two months.

Chris Solari and Steve Berkowitz of the Detroit Free Press reported this news on Friday, stating Dantonio agreed to the furlough in late August to help MSU better manuever through the financial hardship the pandemic has thrown at the athletic department.

Dantonio abruptly retired in February from his position as head coach of Michigan State’s football program, but agreed to remain within the athletic department to work on a variety of special projects, including donor relations. That role, according to the Detroit Free Press, is contracted through Feb. 22, 2022 and will annually pay him $100,000. Dantonio also received a $4.3 million longevity bonus shortly before his retirement earlier this year.

In total, Michigan State is reportedly on the hook to payout “nearly $15 million” in 2020 for Dantonio and new head coach Mel Tucker — who is on the first year of a six-year contract that pays around $5.5 million annually.

Mark Dantonio is the Spartans’ all-time winningest coach with a career record of 114-57 in the 13 years he was MSU’s head coach.

Former Michigan State Football team chaplain Father John ‘Jake’ Foglio passes away

Long-time Michigan State fixture Father Jake Foglio has passed away.

[jwplayer A8I2iwtU]

For over 40 years, Father John ‘Jake’ Foglio has been a fixture in the Michigan State athletics community, consulting the likes of Duffy Daugherty, Tom Izzo, and Mark Dantonio. On Monday, we at SpartansWire, and members of the Michigan State community around the world, were saddened to learn that Father Jake had passed away.

Father Jake had been the team chaplain for the football team for years and has been a fixture around the program ever since. He was so important to the fabric of the MSU community that the College of Arts and Letters even created the Foglio Chair of Spirituality to commemorate the local legend and, really, spiritual advisor to many leaders in the Michigan State athletics community over the years.

Foglio graduated from Michigan State in 1951 and worked for WKAR in East Lansing as a post-grad. He then served in the United State Marine Corps before becoming ordained as a priest in 1961. He served at St. John’s Student Parish in East Lansing since 1970 and served as an assistant professor in the MSU Department of Family Medicine from 1986 to 1997.

Father Jake Foglio was born in 1930. Rest in peace to someone who touched a lot of hearts and minds in the Michigan State community for decades.

Why Le’Veon Bell talks to Adam Gase more than any coach he’s had

Jets RB Le’Veon Bell talks to Adam Gase more than any head coach he’s had because of Gase’s offensive background.

The relationship between Le’Veon Bell and Adam Gase wasn’t portrayed in the best of lights during the duo’s first year in New York, but the running back isn’t quite sure why.

From the get-go, there were reports that Gase didn’t agree with spending a ton of money on a back like Bell, a decision that was made by former general manager Mike Maccagnan. From there, much attention was paid to Gase’s usage of Bell, which was often either head-scratching or minimal.

Bell, however, insists the two get along just fine. In fact, he talks to Gase more than any other head coach he’s ever played for.

“I’ve never played for an offensive-minded coach,” Bell recently explained to Hot 97 radio. “So I’ve talked to him more than any other coach that I’ve ever talked to in my life.

“So I don’t get how people get that relationship thing – it must have been a rumor before I got there. But since I got there, me and him don’t have no problems.”

Before Bell signed a four-year, $52.5 million deal — which includes a $35 million guarantee — he played under Mike Tomlin from 2013-18 in Pittsburgh. Tomlin, who has been the Steelers’ head coach since 2007, comes from a defensive background, serving as the Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator in 2006 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive backs coach from 2001-05.

Even at Michigan State, Bell’s former head coach, Mark Dantonio, has a defensive background that dates back to 1982 when he was the defensive coordinator for Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas.

However, Gase is different and so is the relationship that Bell maintains with his head coach. Still, Bell endured the worst statistical season of his career in Gase’s offensive scheme, which Bell called “the toughest offense he’s played in.” For all their communicating, there appeared to be a disconnect between the two in 2019.

Following the conclusion of the season, a reporter asked Gase if he wanted Bell back in 2020. Gase deflected the question to his general manager Joe Douglas, who was scheduled to talk to reporters the following day.

“He’s under contract for three more years,” Gase replied. You can ask Joe (Douglas) tomorrow.”

Bell didn’t seem too thrilled with Gase’s response on Twitter.

Still, Bell has remained adamant that the two maintain a healthy working relationship. With Gase’s attention solely on the offense, it’s only natural that the two would be in constant contact. There’s hope that with a year of playing under Gase, Bell can prove last season was a fluke.

It’s encouraging that the two have formed a consistent line of communication, especially considering how much the run game needs to improve in 2020. However, it will take more than just talk for both men to redeem their first seasons with the Jets.

Former Michigan State football coach Mark Staten hired at Toledo

Staten is the third Dantonio assistant to find a new job within the FBS.

Former Michigan State offensive line and tight end coach Mark Staten will be back on the sidelines in Spartan Stadium this fall . . . just not on the side he is used to.

Staten has been hired to coach tight ends and offensive tackles by Toledo, the school’s head coach Jason Candle announced on Twitter.

The Toledo Rockets are currently scheduled to play at Michigan State on September 19 should the football season go on as planned.

Staten was a mainstay on the staffs of Mark Dantonio, working with him at Cincinnati and all 13 of Dantonio’s years at Michigan State. Staten spent most of his team at MSU coaching the offensive line before switching to tight ends coach and special teams coordinator prior to the 2019 season.

Staten is the third former Dantonio assistant to land a new gig–excluding the ones still on staff under Mel Tucker at MSU. Former receivers coach Terrance Samuel took the same role at UNLV in addition to being named passing game coordinator. Paul Haynes, who coached defensive backs at MSU from 2018-19, took the same position at Minnesota shortly after Dantonio resigned in February.

Report: Curtis Blackwell lawsuit against Mark Dantonio, Mark Hollis dismissed

According to The Detroit News, Curtis Blackwell’s lawsuit against Mark Dantonio, Mark Hollis, and Lou Anna Simon has been dismissed.

[jwplayer gcEn4Lgq]

According to Matt Charboneau of The Detroit News, the multi-year saga surrounding Curtis Blackwell’s lawsuit against former MSU Football head coach Mark Dantonio, former Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis, and former Michigan State president Lou Anna Simon is now concluding as the lawsuit has reportedly been dismissed.

The case was recommended to be dismissed back in March by a judge and that recommendation was apparently put into action today. This is a lawsuit that has spanned multiple years and one that some fans and onlookers thought could have even been a factor in Mark Dantonio’s retirement back in February.

With the lawsuit now concluded, the Spartans and new head coach Mel Tucker can look forward to a fresh start for the program.
