Jets place Marcell Harris on practice squad injured reserve

Marcell Harris placed on injured reserve

The Jets made a swap of players on the practice squad and also lost a player from the practice squad Tuesday.

The Jets announced they have placed linebacker Marcell Harris on practice squad injured reserve with an ankle injury, effectively ending his season. Harris suffered the injury during Sunday‘s game against the Buffalo Bills.

In a corresponding move, the Jets brought back defensive lineman Marquiss Spencer to the practice squad. Spender spent six days with the team during the week of Thanksgiving.

New York also lost a practice player to another active roster. The Pittsburgh Steelers plucked defensive lineman Jonathan Marshall from the Jets’ practice squad. Marshall was a sixth-round pick of the Jets in 2021 and has spent all season on the practice squad.

Jets provide injury updates on Mike White, Quinnen Williams

Injury updates on White, Williams and others

The Jets had a few injury scares during Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills. For the most part, that’s all they were, just quick scares.

Head coach Robert Saleh provided updates on the injuries from Sunday, including the statuses of quarterback Mike White (ribs) and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (calf).

Both players are considered day-to-day. Saleh is hopeful White can start on Sunday and that the Jets are preparing as if White will start in Week 15 against the Lions.

“He’s tough as nails,” Saleh said about White. “He was playing really, really well.”

White took numerous shots during the game and went to the hospital as a precautionary measure. He was cleared and flew home with the team.

Quinnen Williams is closer to 50/50 at this point. Saleh said it’s too early in the week to know for sure. The calf injury is similar to the one Williams had during training camp.

Everyone was holding their breath when Williams went down, hoping it wasn’t a serious non-contact knee injury. He was taken to the locker room and was ruled questionable to return before eventually being ruled out with a calf injury, not a knee injury, which was a positive sign.

Wide receiver Corey Davis is in concussion protocol. He exited Sunday’s game with what was described as a head injury. The good news is Saleh said Davis was “feeling really good today” and that the team is hopeful he’ll be available for Sunday.

Two players are out this week, including one whose season could be over. Cornerback Brandin Echols will not play Sunday with a quadriceps injury and linebacker Marcell Harris is out with an ankle injury. Saleh added that Harris’ injury could be season-ending.

A familiar name for the Jets is back with the active roster, at least for Sunday.

The Jets announced they have elevated linebacker Marcell Harris from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills.

Harris has appeared in ten games this season, mostly on special teams but has made occasional appearances at linebacker as well. Harris was waived and re-joined the team via the practice squad just after Thanksgiving.

The Jets will have five linebackers on the active roster, as Harris will join C.J. Mosley, Kwon Alexander, Quincy Williams and Jamien Sherwood.

Harris appeared in all ten games for the Jets this season, mostly on special teams and making sporadic appearances on defense.

He totaled ten tackles in 59 defensive snaps and two tackles in 163 special teams snaps.

The Jets have Jamien Sherwood behind the trio of C.J. Mosley, Kwon Alexander and Quincy Williams on the active roster and also still have Hamseh Nasirildeen and Chazz Surratt on the practice squad.

The Jets made a couple of roster moves Thursday. As expected, the team placed defensive end Vinny Curry (hamstring) on injured reserve. He is out for at least four games.

In a corresponding move, the Jets re-signed linebacker Marcell Harris to the 53-man roster. Harris was among the final cuts as the Jets got down to their initial 53-man roster.

The Jets also added cornerback Craig James to their practice squad, as well as linebacker Chazz Surratt.

James originally signed with the Jets in July but was cut just five days later. James has also spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings in his career.

Surratt is also a former Viking, a third-round pick in 2021. He was among the final cuts for the Vikings this week. Surratt was a quarterback-turned-linebacker while at North Carolina.

The 49ers needed a takeaway and got one from linebacker Marcell Harris. Harris on a third-and-3 stepped in front of a Texans receiver for his first interception of the season.

He actually fumbled on the return and Houston recovered, but the officials ruled his forward progress was stopped. It was a fortunate call for San Francisco. They took advantage with a touchdown on the ensuing possession.

The Eagles just released their Thursday injury report in advance of Sunday’s matchup against the 49ers and several players returned to practice.

On Wednesday, Philadelphia had 12 players out or limited in their action, but on Thursday, the numbers returned to normal.

Marcell Harris making strong case for roster spot in new role at linebacker

It’s going to be tough for the #49ers to include LB Marcell Harris in their final roster cuts.

Making the 49ers roster wasn’t going to be easy for Marcell Harris when he was lining up as a strong safety. His play at that position since being taken by San Francisco in the sixth round of the 2018 draft hasn’t been great, and roster spots at safety were going to be scarce. Harris was moved to linebacker this offseason though and could be carving out a role for himself there.

Defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, a former NFL linebacker himself, discussed Harris’ growth at a position he only just started learning. Ryans has been pleased with the progress of the converted safety.

“Marcell has grown,” Ryans told reporters after Thursday’s practice. “I think every day Marcell has grown and he’s becoming better at having a really good feel of playing at that second level at the linebacker spot. It seemed like a play he made yesterday, just him feeling the D-Line and playing off of the D-Line. I see him developing and transitioning into being able to help us there at that linebacker spot. So, Marcell, like I said before, he’s a playmaker, wherever he is on the field, you know he’s going to always be around the ball. He’s going to find a way to get the ball out. And I’m just excited with his growth process at the linebacker position.”

It’s not a lock that Harris will make the roster at his new position, but there are a number of reasons he could stick around. Not only is he growing into his role as a linebacker, but he offers positional versatility and special teams contributions.

Should he make the club, he’d give the 49ers a good playmaker on the second level who’s athletic enough to run with receivers and running backs in the middle of the field, but he’d also be able to slide back to safety in a pinch. Special teams coach Richard Hightower also praised Harris as one of the team’s top special teams players.

“I think when you take a look at a guy like Marcell Harris, I think over the years Marcell has proven himself,” Hightower told reporters in a press conference after Thursday’s practice. “Guys can see that on tape. So yeah for sure, he’s one of the top guys. He’s always been one of the good players here. He makes a lot of tackles. He commands a lot of double teams and he quite honestly breaks through those double teams and still makes tackles. So, Marcell has been a good contributor for us and that was a hell of a draft choice that they drafted Marcell because he’s come in and done everything that we expected him to do and more. So, I’ve been real pleased with Marcell.”

It would be an unconventional path to the roster for Harris, but he offers enough that it makes sense for the 49ers to keep him. If he continues progressing as a linebacker, he may even find himself back next year in the mix for a starting job.

After the Dallas Cowboys eliminated the San Francisco 49ers from postseason contention last week, the team had nothing in the standings to play for. With all the incentive in the world to mail it in for the final two games of the season, head coach Kyle Shanahan did everything in his power to stay competitive.

On Saturday, already depleted by injuries and a chance at the playoffs, the Niners showed why they were NFC favorites coming into the season. The Arizona Cardinals entered the contest in position for a playoff spot, however, after falling on their home field in a 20-12 loss, it’s now out of their hands.

The San Francisco 49ers last open door of relevance this NFL season have finally came to a close. Less than a year after reaching the Super Bowl, the defending NFC champs were eliminated from the postseason after a deflating 41-33 Week 15 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. While many players had strong performances, critical errors in all facets of the game proved too costly to overcome.
