After playing right tackle in college, Luke Goedeke was thrust into the starting left guard spot to start his NFL career, as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hoped to plug one of the biggest holes in their starting lineup.
Goedeke struggled to make the transition, but was finally moved back to his right tackle spot at the end of the season, and looked like a completely different player.
He impressed the Bucs enough at that spot that they felt comfortable moving All-Pro Tristan Wirfs to the left side to replace the departed Donovan Smith, and Goedeke responded with a stellar 2023 campaign.
Heading into the 2024 season, Goedeke has gained more confidence from last year’s performance, but he’s still got plenty of room to grow.
“Like I said, I’m just never satisfied,” Goedeke said earlier this week at mandatory minicamp. “Last year was last year, obviously. It helps knowing that I can play at such a high level in the NFL, but I don’t think I’m anywhere near my full potential. I’m just going to keep growing and growing as an offensive tackle in this league – that’s what I’m looking forward to most. And, continuing to work with the guys, especially, and continuing to grow as an individual and as a football player.”
Tampa Bay’s entire offensive line should be much improved this season after some key additions in free agency and the draft, but the strength will remain on the edges, where Goedeke and Wirfs have established themselves as one of the NFL’s best tackle tandems.
