UFC on ESPN 22 Pena vs. Munoz: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Records: Pena 8-3 | Munoz 6-1

Fight result (2-way line or money line)

The southpaw PENA (-155) will tower over his opponent, standing 6-foot-3 to just 5-foot-9 for Munoz. He also has a three-inch reach advantage he will use to keep his foe at arm’s length.

Pena is looking to bounce back after a submission loss in the third round on June 27, 2020, and he has dropped two of his past three fights.

However, his physical advantage here might lead to his first KO/TKO victory since as third-round knockout of Matt Wiman on June 22, 2019.

Munoz (+130) lost in his UFC debut against Nasrat Haqparast on Aug. 8, 2020 on the Lewis-Oleinik card, and he cannot be trusted here.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under (O/U)

Two of the last three fights for Pena, and four of his six fights at the UFC level, have ended up going the distance.

“Violent Bob Ross”, which might be the best nickname in all of combat sports, likely will go the distance with Munoz.

He has gone the distance in each of his past four pro fights, including his UFC debut against Haqparast.

As such, play YES (-185): WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? It’s a little pricey but will be well worth it.

In addition, play PENA ON POINTS (+165) on round betting for an added value.

With Jai Herbert out, Luis Pena steps in to face Drakkar Klose at UFC Fight Night 185

With Drakkar Klose needing a new opponent for UFC Fight Night 185, Luis Pena has stepped in on a week’s notice to take the challenge.

With [autotag]Drakkar Klose[/autotag] needing a new opponent, [autotag]Luis Pena[/autotag] has stepped in on a week’s notice to take the challenge.

[autotag]Jai Herbert[/autotag] has been forced out of UFC Fight Night 185 on Feb. 20 due to COVID-19 related health issues and Pena (8-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC) will step in on short notice to face Klose (11-2-1 MMA, 5-2 UFC).

A person with knowledge of the booking confirmed the news to MMA Junkie on Thursday. They asked to remain anonymous since the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. MMA Fighting was first to report the news.

Following the news, Herbert released a statement on Instagram explaining how a recent positive COVID-19 test forced him to withdraw.

“Unfortunately I’m out of my fight on Feb 20th…couple weeks ago I became ill…I then tested positive for COVID. Obviously this meant I had to isolate & was unable to get my medicals done, train or cut weight.
I was really looking forward to this fight, to show what improvements I’ve made since my last one.
It’s another set back…but there’s people being effected by this pandemic a lot worse then me so it is what it is.
Il be back soon, and cement myself in the @ufc lightweight division….what is life without a bit of adversity ….. 👊🏽 “

Klose will look to rebound from a second-round knockout loss to Beneil Dariush at UFC 248, where he was stopped in a thrilling back-and-forth contest. Prior to that, the Arizona native had scored three straight wins over Lando Vannata, Bobby Green and Christos Giagos.

Since moving back up to 155 pounds, Pena has split his past four appearances. After defeating Steve Garcia via unanimous decision in February, the Season 27 “Ultimate Fighter” alum suffered a third-round submission loss at the hands of Khama Worthy at UFC on ESPN 12 in June.

Luis Pena, Tim Elliott among four UFC fighters suspended for positive drug tests

Jamahal Hill, Tim Elliott, Luis Pena and Deron Winn have been suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission for positive drug tests.

Four UFC fighters have been given suspensions at the latest Nevada Athletic Commission hearing.

On Thursday, the NAC suspended and fined [autotag]Jamahal Hill[/autotag], [autotag]Tim Elliott[/autotag] and [autotag]Luis Pena[/autotag] for testing positive for cannabis, while [autotag]Deron Winn[/autotag] was suspended for testing positive for amphetamines.

Elliott (16-11-1 MMA, 5-9 UFC) and Pena (8-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC) each were suspended four and a half months and fined 15 percent of the fight purses from their corresponding bouts. They each received reduced suspensions since they had taken their fights on short notice.

Elliott lost to Brandon Royval on May 30 at UFC on ESPN 9. Pena lost to Khama Worthy on June 27 at UFC on ESPN 12. Both fighters lost by submission.

[lawrence-related id=541735,432845]

Hill (7-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) most recently fought at UFC on ESPN 9 on May 30 and picked up a first-round TKO victory over Klidson Abreu. The win over Abreu was overturned to a no contest due to his violation. He also received a six-month suspension and a fine of 15 percent of his fight purse.

Winn (6-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) received a $1,800 fine and a nine-month suspension for his positive test. The American Kickboxing Academy product most recently competed on March 7 where he fell short to Gerald Meerschaert at UFC 248.

All suspensions are retroactive to the date of the failed tests.

Hill and Elliott’s positive tests came from May 30 collections. Pena’s positive test came from a sample collected July 27. Winn’s positive test came March 7.

Luis Pena, Tim Elliot, Jamahal Hill get temporary suspensions extended by NAC after positive tests for marijuana

NAC extends temporary suspensions for three UFC fighters after positive marijuana tests.

[autotag]Luis Pena[/autotag], [autotag]Tim Elliot[/autotag] and [autotag]Jamahal Hill[/autotag] will have to wait a bit longer for resolution on their infractions in Nevada.

The three UFC competitors had their temporary suspensions extended by the Nevada Athletic Commission on Wednesday afternoon’s monthly meeting after they all tested positive for marijuana in their respective pre-fight screenings. All three suspensions will hold until a full disciplinary hearing at the next NAC meeting, expected to take place in September.

[lawrence-related id=530193,534728,523117]

Pena’s (8-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC) positive marijuana test came from a urine sample submitted on July 24, prior to his July 27 bout with Khama Worthy at UFC on ESPN 12. He lost via third-round submission.

Elliot’s (16-11-1 MMA, 5-9 UFC) positive test came on May 30 ahead of a flyweight contest against Brandon Royval at UFC on ESPN 9. He took the bout on short notice and lost via submission. Elliot went on to fight one more time, as he took on Ryan Benoit at UFC on ESPN 13 on July 16 in Abu Dhabi. Elliot’s temporary suspension officially kicked in on July 21.

Hill (8-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) also tested positive on May 30 at UFC on ESPN 9, but for a light-heavyweight contest against Klidson Abreu. The 29-year-old won via first round knockout, picking up his second win in the promotion.

It’s unclear at this time if the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, the UFC’s anti-doping partner, will also seek disciplinary action on the positive test.

Callout Collection: Who UFC on ESPN 14 winners want next – and how likely they’ll get them

Fabricio Werdum and Paul Craig were among those who name-dropped their preferred next opponents at UFC on ESPN 14 in Abu Dhabi.

Earning wins in the UFC is certainly no easy task, but what comes next is often even more important: the post-fight callout.

So after Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 14 event in Abu Dhabi, who took advantage of their time on the mic? See below for this week’s Callout Collection – and just how realistic each one is.

* * * * *

First up, let’s take a look at the preliminary card …

Nathaniel Wood

Wants to fight: [autotag]John Dodson[/autotag]

The callout: “I’d love to come back here, it’s been an absolutely amazing experience. If the UFC do keep this venue here up and running, I’d love to get back on here. I’d like a rematch with John Dodson at some point, but I understand that (the matchmakers) won’t give that to me necessarily, so just whoever the matchmakers want me to fight, I’ll take whoever the UFC give me.”

The reality: [autotag]Nathaniel Wood[/autotag] knows that he’s unlikely to get a rematch with John Dodson straight away, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to plant the seed in the matchmakers’ minds. The Brit was set to face undefeated debutant Umar Nurmagomedov on “Fight Island” but the death of his uncle – and father of cousin Khabib – Abdulmanap meant he withdrew from the event. Wood stayed on the card and showed off his evolving striking game against game debutant John Castaneda. Wood will have to take on, and beat, more established opposition before he can get his rematch, but after another performance full of positives, the Brit is trending in the right direction again.

Next up: Rising featherweight targets fellow hot prospect.

UFC on ESPN 12 medical suspensions: Dustin Poirier, Dan Hooker get matching terms

Three fighters are facing 180-day suspensions as a result of UFC on ESPN 12.

Three fighters are facing 180-day suspensions as a result of UFC on ESPN 12 – but neither of the card’s headliners is among them.

Despite a back-and-forth battle for 25 minutes, [autotag]Dustin Poirier[/autotag] and [autotag]Dan Hooker[/autotag] walked away relatively unscathed. Both men received a 60-day suspension due to a “tough fight.”

The three fighters facing the longest suspensions are [autotag]Gian Villante[/autotag], [autotag]Brendan Allen[/autotag], and [autotag]Khama Worthy[/autotag]. All three combatants were handed potential six-month terms due to various injuries.

[lawrence-related id=530481,530478]
