UFC 268 results: Chris Barnett spoils Gian Villante’s retirement with incredible spinning wheel kick

Chris Barnett lands spinning wheel kick on Gian Villante to score first UFC win at Saturday’s UFC 268.

[autotag]Chris Barnett[/autotag]’s first UFC came with a bang.

The UFC heavyweight scored a TKO win over veteran [autotag]Gian Villante [/autotag] in the preliminary card of Saturday’s UFC 268. Barnett (22-7 MMA, 1-1 UFC) stopped Villante (17-14 MMA, 7-11 UFC) at the 2:23 mark of Round 2.

The heavyweight bout was part of the UFC 268 preliminary card at Madison Square Garden in New York. It streamed on ESPN+ ahead of additional prelims on ESPNews and the main card on pay-per-view.

It was a fairly uneventful performance until the stoppage.

Both Villante and Barnett exchanged shots for the first round, but neither fighter landed anything meaningful. Villante was pushing the action and looking to put combinations together, while Barnett backed up and looked to counter.

Halfway through the second round, Barnett hit Villante with an explosive spinning-wheel kick. The unexpected shot dropped Villante to the canvas.  Barnett immediately followed up with ground-and-pound while Villante covered up from turtle position. After a couple of seconds, the referee waved off the fight.

This was Barnett’s first win in 2021. He had made his UFC debut on short notice back in May when he suffered a submission loss to veteran Ben Rothwell.

Meanwhile, this was set to be Villante’s final fight of his career. The 36-year-old told Newsday prior to the fight that he intended to retire.

Villante has been competing professionally since 2009 and he’s been fighting under the UFC banner since 2013. Villante joined the UFC after going 3-2 in Strikeforce. The New Yorker holds notable wins Corey Anderson, Ed Herman, and Sean O’Connell.

Villante reportedly is finishing up his physical education degree and is a substitute teacher at a middle school in New York, where he also coaches the 8th grade football team and soon will become a wrestling coach.

Gian Villante set to return vs. Jake Collier at UFC event on Dec. 5

The UFC’s Dec. 5 lineup is shaping up.

Heavyweights [autotag]Gian Villante[/autotag] and [autotag]Jake Collier[/autotag] are set to square off Dec. 5 at a location and venue to be announced later.

People with knowledge of the situation recently confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie but asked to remain anonymous since the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. Villante first mentioned the matchup in a recent interview with Quick Talks.

Both men will look to rebound after failed UFC heavyweight divisional debuts. In the final round of a back-and-forth affair with Maurice Greene in late June, Villante (17-12 MMA, 7-9 UFC) was submitted with an unusual modified choke from the bottom in Round 3.

Collier (11-5 MMA, 3-4 UFC), a 31-year-old Missouri-based fighter, returned from a near two-year absence in July. He was finished by strikes in 45 seconds against UFC newcomer Tom Aspinall.

With the addition, the Dec. 5 lineup includes:

  • Jack Hermansson vs. Darren Till
  • Bethe Correia vs. Yanan Wu
  • Jake Collier vs. Gian Villante

UFC on ESPN 12: Gian Villante vs. Maurice Greene odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 12 fight between Gian Villante and Maurice Greene, with MMA betting odds, picks, tips and bets.

[jwplayer V5jyIoVm]

Gian Villante and Maurice Greene lock horns in a heavyweight bout on the main card at UFC on ESPN 12 – also known as UFC Fight Night 174 – Saturday at the UFC’s APEX Facility in Las Vegas. The prelims kick off at 5 p.m. ET, followed by the main card set for 8 p.m. ET on ESPN/ESPN+.

Villante (17-11) finds himself at a severe disadvantage for this one in more ways than one. First off, Greene (8-5) towers over Villante by four inches, while also having four-inch reach advantage. What’s more, Greene checks in at 243 pounds to just 205 pounds for Villante.

The weight situation could be to Villante’s advantage, however, as he is lighter on his feet and a little more agile. That weight situation is an advantage for Greene should the fight be taken to the ground, however.

Villante’s last time out ended in a Round 1 knockout loss to Michal Oleksiejczuk on the Blachowicz-Santos card Feb. 23, 2019. Villante has lost consecutive bouts on just one occasion in 15 fights at the UFC level, and that was back in 2017. Four of his past five fights have ended up going the distance, and he has never won or lost via submission at the UFC level.

Greene is also coming off a Jan. 18 loss, falling by submission to Aleksei Oleinik at UFC 246. Each of Greene’s previous three outings have finished inside the distance, a stark contrast to Villante, with two of the three ending via KO/TKO. Greene is 1-1 in those two affairs. He has posted five wins by submission in his career, with the last one coming in the TUF 28 Finale against Michel Batista Nov. 30, 2018.

Gian Villante vs. Maurice Greene betting odds

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Friday, June 26 at 7:25 a.m. ET.

Greene (-239) is a heavy favorite over the shaky Villante (+190). Playing Greene on the 2-way line is a bit expensive. Instead, consider taking GREENE BY KO/TKO, DQ or SUBMISSION (-112) at near even-money, with the only way you lose is if Villante pulls the upset or the fight is decided by the judges. So, this is easily your best bet.

UINDER 2.5 ROUNDS (-176) is a good way to go, too, as each of Greene’s past three fights have finished inside the distance. He doesn’t like to waste time. In fact, a nice wager would be pinpointing the round for a finish. Taking ROUND 2 (+350) for a finish could be quite lucrative. If you “REALLY” want to roll the dice, Greene by KO/TKO/DQ in Round 2 (note, submission is not included in this wager) pays +550. Why not toss a couple of dollars on that for fun?

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on Greene by KO/TKO, DQ or Submission (-112) returns a profit of $8.93. A $10 wager on Under 2.5 Rounds (-176) returns a net profit of $5.68, while a $10 play on the fight ending in Round 2 (+350) would cash a ticket for $35 profit.
