Pair of former LSU coordinators heading back to the NFL

Jake Peetz and Daronte Jones, who each spent the 2021 season in Baton Rouge, are returning to coaching positions in the NFL.

In an attempt to bounce back from the frustrating 5-5 season in 2020 that followed a 15-0 national championship run, former Tigers coach Ed Orgeron hired a pair of coordinators from the NFL ranks: Jake Peetz (offense) and Daronte Jones (defense).

However, Orgeron was fired after another disappointing finish in 2021, and new coach Brian Kelly opted not to retain either coordinator. Both have landed on their feet, though, back in the NFL.

Peetz is heading to Los Angeles to serve as the quarterbacks coach on Sean McVay’s Rams staff, according to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Jones is returning to Minnesota to serve as defensive backs coach, the role he held before his one season in Baton Rouge.

Before that role, Jones spent two seasons as the cornerbacks coach with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Peetz came from Carolina where he was the quarterbacks coach under former LSU passing game coordinator Joe Brady, who was hired there as the offensive coordinator following the championship season. Peetz was the running backs coach for the Panthers before that following stints as an offensive assistant at Alabama and the quarterbacks coach for the Las Vegas Raiders.

Peetz has experience working with McVay; both coached for the Washington Commanders in 2014.

Things didn’t work out for Peetz and Jones in their one season with the Tigers, but it seems both have landed on their feet with solid jobs in the league.

WATCH: Ja’Marr Chase makes unbelievable catch to set up field goal for Bengals

Not even one of the best corners in the game can keep up with Chase.

After the Los Angeles Rams scored on their second possession to take an early 7-0 lead in Super Bowl LVI, the Bengals needed an answer. They got one from superstar rookie receiver and former LSU Tiger Ja’Marr Chase.

On a first and 10 after the LA touchdown (which came from another former Tiger in Odell Beckham Jr.) from Cincinnati’s own 43-yard line, quarterback Joe Burrow dropped back into coverage and looked in the direction of Chase, who had a step on First-Team All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey near the sideline.

Chase made an excellent adjustment to the ball to reel it in inside the red zone, and he was pulled down near the end zone at the four-yard line after a 46-yard pickup.

Here’s a better angle that shows off just how impressive of a snag it was.

The Rams managed to get the stop as Ramsey earned some redemption by breaking up a potential touchdown pass to receiver Tee Higgins on third down. Cincinnati had to settle for a field goal from rookie kicker Evan McPherson, whose leg secured wins in the previous two rounds of the NFL playoffs.

It’s still early in the big game, but former LSU players are already starting to take over the contest.

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase was named 221 Offensive Rookie of the Year by the Professional Football Writers of America. Chase also made the All-Rookie team.

Chase caught 81 passes for 1,455 yards and 13 touchdowns. He averaged 18 yards per catch. Chase’s 13 touchdowns set a Bengals rookie record, which receiver Isaac Curtis previously held in 1973 with nine touchdowns. His 81 receptions were most ever by a Bengals rookie, breaking Chris Collinsworth and Tee Higgins’s record of 67. In addition, Chase’s 1,455 receiving yards broke A.J Green’s record of 1,057 yards that Green set in 2011.

He broke another impressive record in a Week 17 win over the Kansas City Cheifs; Chase broke the most receiving yards by a rookie in one game. Chase had 266 receiving yards on 11 catches and three touchdowns.

The rookie receiver had five 100-yard receiving games, the most by a Bengals rookie. Chase also proves that he knows how to produce when the lights get bright in the playoffs. Against the Las Vegas Raiders on Wild Card Weekend, Chase caught nine passes for 116 yards; then, in the next round against the Tennessee Titans, the receiver hauled in five catches for 109 yards setting more records.

Chase is on his way to becoming one of the best receivers in NFL history if he can stay healthy and keep up this level of play. After that, the sky is the limit for Chase the NFL.

The NFL announced their Pro Bowl roster, and three former LSU Tigers players made the cut. Ja’Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson, and Tyrann Mathieu made the roster.

Chase played for LSU for two years and was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals. Many people were worried about Chase in the preseason because he dropped a couple of passes. However, once the regular season started, he showed what he could do on the field. So far this season Chase caught 61 passes for 1,038 yards and ten touchdowns. He is also averaging 17 yards per catch. Many people wondered if the Bengals were making the right pick with Chase, and as of right now, it was the right choice.

Since being drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 2020, Jefferson has caught 177 passes for 2,735 yards and 16 touchdowns. This will be Jefferson’s second Pro Bowl; he made it last year as a rookie; Jefferson is quickly becoming one of the best receivers in the NFL. So far this season, Jefferson has 89 catches, 1,335, and nine touchdowns.

After being dismissed at LSU in 2012, Mathieu has made a name for himself in the NFL. This will be Mathieu’s third time in the Pro Bowl. Mathieu has complied 46 tackles, one sack, five passes defended, two interceptions, and one touchdown. Mathieu is a crucial piece to the Kansas City Chiefs defense.

Coast to Coast Scouting: Derek Stingley Jr. Is Already CB1

Earlier today Coast to Coast Scouting released an early 2022 NFL Draft outlook on LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Jr.

Earlier today Coast to Coast Scouting released an early 2022 NFL Draft outlook on LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Jr.

It might be a bit bias, because I wrote it.

Nonetheless, we all know the facts and my opinions are commonly shared not only among LSU fans but also among NFL Draft analysts.

Derek Stingley Jr. is CB1.

2022 NFL Draft: Derek Stingley Jr. Is Already CB1

In the 2019 season, Stingley Jr. had 31 solo tackles, 38 total tackles, one fumble recovery, and six interceptions. Stingley Jr. finished last season with 19 solo tackles, 27 total tackles, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and five passes defended over seven total games.

Stingley has the coverage skills, size, length, technique, and insane ball skills to make him as close to a can’t miss cornerback prospect as you’ll see in college football. Early on in his career many evaluators compared him to Jalen Ramsey as the next can’t miss cornerback prospect.

[lawrence-related id=17790]

The elite traits stand out when watching Stingley, as do his incredible ball tracking instincts. If he takes a step forward this season, I will not rule out him becoming a top-five lock in next year’s draft class.

A whole lot can change between now and the 2022 NFL Draft. Many late season risers will fly up draft boards as they do every single year. However, Stingley is a rare breed. He possesses the talent, leadership, and drive to prove to the entire country that he is in fact the best cornerback in all of college football.

If I’m betting on one player to live up to all the hype, I’m betting on Derek Stingley Jr.

Baltimore Ravens ‘have their eye’ on WR Terrace Marshall Jr.

Will LSU WR Terrace Marshall Jr. be a first-round pick?

LSU wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. has been talked about quite a lot leading up to the 2021 NFL draft. Could Marshall hear his name called when round one begins, on Thursday, April 29th?

He absolutely should.

There are few teams selecting in the second half of the first round that could use Marshall’s talent. The Baltimore Ravens are one team that people consistently have drafting Marshall in their mock drafts.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. has the Baltimore Ravens selecting Terrace Marshall Jr. with the 27th overall pick in round one.

Baltimore Ravens Director of Player Personnel Joe Hortiz recently said that the team “has their eye” on wide receivers Terrace Marshall Jr., and Rashod Bateman.

“ (They’re) both talented guys who have some versatility,” Hortiz said when speaking on the wideouts.

The fit in Baltimore makes a lot of sense for Marshall. The Ravens are a team in need of a big-bodied possession wide receiver who can make contested catches as well as create plays down the field.

In 2019, the year quarterback Lamar Jackson won the league MVP, he had two big-bodied tight ends that really made his job in the pocket a lot easier.

Terrace Marshall Jr. is arguably the best big receiver in this draft class. At 6-foot-2, 205-pounds, he fits the mold of what the Ravens want to give their young franchise quarterback.

Marshall isn’t just a big receiver who makes 50/50 catches either. He ran a 4.38 40-yard dash at LSU’s pro day last month, and also added a 39-inch vertical jump to his outstanding showing. He’s a complete receiver who can play physically and with speed.

Marshall would help Lamar Jackson in an immense way, even in his rookie season. A receiver with the skillset of Marshall makes a quarterback’s job much simpler. He would give the offense an option on the outside or inside, as well as a big target in the red zone and on third downs.

Utilizing his catch radius, Marshall would help offset any of Lamar Jackson’s inaccuracies in the short and intermediate passing game, which was often a real struggle for the Ravens offense last season.

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson also struggled last season when being blitzed, as teams were much more aggressive with him throughout the year. Insert a big, fast, physical receiver like Marshall, and it will help the quick passing game immensely when Jackson is under pressure.

Marshall’s draft stock has clearly been on the rise for a few months now. Most evaluators have him as a top-10 wide receiver in this deep class. Others, myself included, have Marshall as a top-5 receiver leading up to April 29th.

If the Ravens draft Terrace Marshall Jr. at No. 27 overall, LSU fans should be excited to watch him compete and win on Sundays.

Regardless of who he plays for, Marshall will continue to make those around him better.

He’ll continue to be a winning player, on and off the football field.

Former LSU star Jarvis Landry will miss first game in his NFL career

Former LSU wide receiver Jarvis Landry will miss the first game of his NFL career on Sunday.

Former LSU wide receiver Jarvis Landry will miss the first game of his NFL career on Sunday after being in close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19.

Landry, along with Cleveland’s other starting receiver, Rashad Higgins, and backups Donovan Peoples-Jones and KhaDarel Hodge, were all placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list after the positive test.

In his seventh NFL season, Landry has played in 110 games. A second-round pick of the Miami Dolphins back in 2014, Landry is in his third season with the Browns.

The former LSU star has 67 receptions for 789 yards and three touchdowns this season.

The Browns are having their best season in years at 10-4 and currently sit one game behind AFC North leader Pittsburgh.

Another former LSU standout, rookie linebacker Jacob Phillips, was also placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Cleveland plays the 1-13 New York Jets in Week 16.

Where do Ja’Marr Chase and Terrace Marshall Jr. land in CBS Sports’ 2021 NFL mock draft?

Both Ja’Marr Chase and Terrace Marshall Jr. could be first-round picks in the 2021 NFL Draft.

[jwplayer nsNnmdIs-er0jUifI]

The LSU Tigers had 14 players selected in the 2020 NFL draft. Heading into the 2021 draft, two former Tigers players are listed as first-round selections.

CBS Sports updated its 2021 NFL mock draft on Tuesday, and have two former LSU receivers being selected within the first 32 picks.

Both Ja’Marr Chase and Terrace Marshall Jr. had outstanding careers for the LSU football program.

Chase opted out of the 2020 college football season during the offseason. The 2019 Biletnikoff Award winner was already a top 10 lock before choosing to not play this season.

[lawrence-related id=13874]

As for Marshall Jr., he decided to play seven games before he opted out last week as LSU was set to face Alabama.

Here is CBS Sports’ updated mock draft listing where the two former Tigers could land.

WR Ja’Marr Chase-Philadelphia Eagles (Round 1, Pick 6)

It’s no surprise that Chase is still being listed as a top 10 selection. Throughout this season, the former LSU receiver had been projected in the top five to different teams.

The Eagles need another lethal wide receiver, and Chase would fit the offense perfectly.

Philadelphia is currently 3-8-1 on the season. Its top target, Travis Fulgham, has 33 receptions for  467 yards and four touchdowns. The Eagles selected former TCU receiver Jalen Reagor with the 21st overall pick in the 2020 draft.

Selecting Chase at No. 6 overall would immediately boost the Eagles’ outside threats.

Which LSU football players are in CBS’ latest 2021 NFL mock draft?

CBS Sports released its weekly 2021 NFL mock draft on Tuesday, and former LSU receiver Ja’Marr Chase is mocked to the Cincinnati Bengals.

[jwplayer D7LcYo7d-er0jUifI]

The 2020 college football season is beginning to heat up.

LSU may be sitting at 2-3, but the Tigers have playmakers all over the field that are worthy of being selected in the 2021 NFL draft.

On Tuesday, CBS Sports updated its 2021 mock draft, and there is a major surprise.

The Tigers only have one player selected in the first round.

[lawrence-related id=12730]

Last week, CBS Sports had LSU receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Terrace Marshall Jr. as first round selections.

But with the Tigers off last week, Marshall dropped from the first round. While he is likely to squeak his way back into being a first-round pick, Chase is the only Tigers player listed this week as a potential first round selection during the 2021 NFL draft.

Here is a look at where CBS Sports projects Chase to end up.

Ja’Marr Chase- Round 1, Pick 9 (Cincinnati Bengals)

The Bengals could use another lethal receiver opposite of A.J. Green.

Cincinnati selected former LSU quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow as the first overall selection in the 2020 NFL draft.

Giving Burrow one of his former college teammates to pass to in the NFL would bring a sign of relief to the Bengals’ offense.

While the team desperately needs an offensive lineman to protect Burrow, picking Chase ninth overall would not be a bad selection.

[lawrence-related id=12713]

At LSU in 2018 and 2019, Chase caught 107 passes for 2,093 yards with 23 career touchdowns.

Last season alone, the former LSU standout caught 84 passes for 1,780 yards and 20 touchdowns on his way to being the recipient of the Biletnikoff Award, which is given to college football’s best wide receiver.

While other teams will be in need of a receiver, Chase would fit the Bengals’ offensive scheme perfectly. Plus, Tigers fans would enjoy watching Burrow throw deep bombs to Chase on Sundays.

Where do LSU players stand in CBS Sports’ 2021 NFL Draft projections?

LSU wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Terrace Marshall Jr. are listed as first-round selections in CBS Sports’ updated mock draft.

The LSU Tigers may not repeat as national champions this season, but they will certainly have many players selected in the 2021 NFL draft.

Wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Terrace Marshall Jr. are almost locks to be selected in the first round.

There are a handful of teams in the NFL that could use Chase and/or Marshall on the outside in the pass catching scheme. But where do those two Tigers end up for their professional careers?

On Tuesday, CBS Sports updated their mock draft, and Chase and Marshall Jr. are still the only two Tigers selected in the first round.

[lawrence-related id=12506]

Round 1, Pick 7: Ja’Marr Chase (Washington Football Team)

The Washington Football Team has experienced many issues on the offensive side of the ball so far this season. The team’s 2-5 record is indicative of just how poorly their offense has been playing.

In offensive rankings, Washington ranks 30th in total offense with 292.7 yards per game. On the receiving end, the Football Team ranks 27th in the league at 217.7 reception yards per game.

Former LSU Tigers wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase could help Washington out tremendously in increasing those numbers.

His athletic ability to catch any pass thrown his way and to make moves against defenders and earn separation at the line of scrimmage would give the team a new star on the outside.

Terry McLaurin, Washington’s best wideout, could use help on the opposite end, and Chase could provide that.

While his final destination on draft day continues to bounce around, Chase will certainly be a top-10 pick in next year’s draft.

[lawrence-related id=12517]

Round 1, Pick 24- Terrace Marshall Jr. (Baltimore Ravens)

Marshall continues to be the leading receiver in Baton Rouge this year. Despite a new quarterback and passing game coordinator, the Tigers’ junior receiver climbs the draft boards after each game.

So far for the 2020 season, Marshall Jr. has 540 yards on 31 receptions with nine touchdowns. With five games to go in the regular season, his numbers will continue upward.

The Ravens have weapons on the outside with Marquise Brown leading the way on the outside. Willie Snead IV and Myles Boykin are the team’s other two star receivers.

Adding Marshall would give Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson a fourth weapon — and possibly the No. 2 receiver — to throw to on the outside.
