2022 Jaguars free agency: Jaguars expected to sign Jacksonville native Darious Williams

After leading the Rams in tackles in Super Bowl LVI and earning a championship ring, Darious Williams is coming back home to Jacksonville.

#Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars didn’t make any new additions on Tuesday, but got back to spending their available cap space on Day 3 of free agency. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, they are expected to sign Jacksonville native and Super Bowl champion Darious Williams, who will be an addition to their cornerbacks group.

The deal is a three-year one worth a max of $39 million with $18 million being guaranteed.

Williams, who turned 29 yesterday, entered the league as an undrafted free agent for the Baltimore Ravens in 2018, but was waived in October of that year. He was quickly picked up off waivers a few days later by the Los Angeles Rams and has been there until this point.

Since joining the Rams, Williams has tallied 23 starts (13 of which occurred last year) and played in 43 games. He saw a majority of his snaps out wide last season (748), but some believe he could be the Jags’ starting nickelback while Shaquill Griffin and Tyson Campbell remain the starters on the outside.

Regardless of where he plays, though, Williams adds a lot of winning experience to the locker-room and could bring a great deal of leadership into the mix, too. He’ll be coming off a Super Bowl win in January where he led the Rams in tackles in the process with eight.

Williams was able to accumulate 71 combined tackles last season. As for his career stats, he will enter his Jags tenure with 130 combined tackles, 27 pass breakups, and six interceptions.

Williams attended Creekside High school in St. Johns, Fla. after transferring from Bartram Trail, which is also in the same area. Afterward he attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He briefly attended Florida State Community College of Jacksonville, too, until UAB’s football program returned after it was temporarily dropped after their 2014 season.

When the Los Angeles Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals, 23-20, in Super Bowl LVI in Inglewood, Calif. on Feb. 13, former Clemson and currents Rams offensive lineman Tremayne Anchrum Jr. earned his first Super Bowl championship.

Anchrum was a two-time national champion at Clemson and joined Dan Benish, K.D. Dunn, Andy Headen, Terry Kinard, Dorian O’Daniel and William Perry among Clemson players to earn both a national championship ring and a Super Bowl ring.

Anchrum was a recent guest on The Players Club Podcast, hosted by former Clemson running back Darien Rencher, and talked about how it feels to be a Super Bowl champ.

“Honestly, it hasn’t set in yet. It’s very surreal,” Anchrum said. “It’s like a mountain of work just kind of coming to a climax, and you’re like wow, that really happened. Kind of like when we won the natty – it just felt like you’re the last people playing, the last two standing, and then you’re the last one standing, it’s like man, this doesn’t feel real. But it was a group effort and everyone from the staff, faculty, everybody, the players, you could just feel like hey, we emptied the tank and we’ve done everything we needed to do.”

Anchrum played in 55 career games with 37 career starts at Clemson from 2016-19, helping Clemson to three national championship berths and two national titles. He started each of his final 30 games at Clemson over his final two seasons, helping guide the Tigers to a 29-1 record in those games. He was a two-time All-ACC honoree and finished his career as one of only 23 players in Clemson history to play at least 2,500 career snaps from scrimmage.

Aaron Donald says Joe Burrow’s comments woke him up during Super Bowl LVI

Some details on what was said on the field during the Super Bowl.

[mm-video type=video id=01fvt4pxhan3jty9nm7e playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fvt4pxhan3jty9nm7e/01fvt4pxhan3jty9nm7e-a22df79a2f128452f7d9e08c49fe4c81.jpg]

Let Los Angeles Rams star Aaron Donald tell it, comments from Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow were what lit a fire under him during Super Bowl LVI.

In a sitdown with Peter King of NBC Sports, Donald said the sideline scuffle roughly one minute into the second half featured some on-field chatter. The fact Burrow told Donald a shove that sent him out of bounds was a clean play apparently had a big impact on the defensive tackle:

“Actually, Burrow was the one, he looked at me, like, ‘Hey Aaron, that was a clean play.’ The quarterback told me that! I feel everybody start pushing me, hitting me. I almost lost it. The refs were like, Aaron, get out of here. They [the Bengals] already got me mad. Now they want to push on me, say all these words to me.

“You just woke me up. You just woke me up!”

In other words, good-guy Burrow being a fierce competitor woke the best defensive player in the NFL up a bit after a quiet first half. It’s only natural for Burrow’s teammates to take exception to a hit on him near the sideline late in a play (Donald said Hakeem Adeniji was talking a little trash too), but guys like Burrow and Donald will use whatever little motivation they can find to turn it up a notch.

That drive came after an interception. Before that, the Bengals had scored on the 75-yard touchdown to Tee Higgins to start the second half. Donald getting a sack later made the Bengals settle for a field goal.

This is more a fun note from the Super Bowl than anything else, but it’s somehow a good mark on Burrow’s character, even if a future Hall of Famer used it as motivation to kick into high gear.

Mythbusting Bengals narratives after Super Bowl trip

Shooting down some out-of-date Bengals narratives that keep making the rounds.

Despite a trip to the Super Bowl during what initially looked like a rebuilding year, it’s not uncommon to see some old (and new, with twists) narratives when the Cincinnati Bengals come up in conversations.

Some of these are worthy of a greatest hits playlist. Others are outright new and, at least in some fashion, not totally correct.

Granted, the Bengals catapulting to a Super Bowl after six wins over the prior two seasons is uncharted waters for everyone — fans, the league itself, even the organization.

That in mind, let’s mythbust some of the most common narratives in a way that’s helpful for all so that the discourse around the team can evolve right alongside its ability to contend.

Watch: Footage of Joe Burrow waving off trainers after Super Bowl injury

Burrow wasn’t going to let them take him out of the Super Bowl.

[mm-video type=video id=01fvt4pxhan3jty9nm7e playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fvt4pxhan3jty9nm7e/01fvt4pxhan3jty9nm7e-a22df79a2f128452f7d9e08c49fe4c81.jpg]

One of the scariest moments of Super Bowl LVI was in the third quarter when Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow got rolled up and grabbed his knee, with cameras later catching a shot of him screaming on the field.

Everyone held their breath hoping he would be ok. Fortunately, we found out he was able to get off the field, sit on the bench, walk around and even told backup QB Brandon Allen that he was ok.

After the game, he said there was simply no way he was staying out of the game.

Now, thanks to the work of NFL Films, we see Burrow even waving off trainers after that injury.

It’s a very quick video, but it’s more than enough to tell you how determined Burrow was not to leave this game. He wanted so bad to stay in the game. That’s just how Burrow is. We found out after the game that it was a sprained MCL that does not require surgery.

Burrow will be back. And it’s the competitive nature like this that will continue to fuel him.

Joe Burrow’s going viral for his funny Super Bowl chats with Rams defenders

“What’s up Aaron?”

[mm-video type=video id=01fvt4pxhan3jty9nm7e playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fvt4pxhan3jty9nm7e/01fvt4pxhan3jty9nm7e-a22df79a2f128452f7d9e08c49fe4c81.jpg]

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow really introduced himself to the NFL this year while becoming the Comeback Player of the Year and helping lift his team to the Super Bowl.

But he made sure to introduce himself to the Rams’ biggest defenders during the big game, too.

NFL Films caught Burrow introducing himself to various members of the Rams defense, including Von Miller, Aaron Donald and Eric Weddle.

Now, Rams defenders obviously knew who Burrow was. But they hadn’t technically met him. And those that know Burrow behind the scenes will just know…this is just Burrow being himself.

It’s the same reason Burrow was constantly getting praise from opponents during mic’d up sessions this season. It’s why his response about LA weather went viral and why he went out of his way to wear a friend’s jacket to help his business.

The clip:

And what one of the players in the clip had to say about Burrow after the game:

Report: Adrian Peterson won’t face felony domestic violence charge

TMZ is reporting that long-time running back Adrian Peterson will not face a felony charge following his domestic violence arrest in LA.

Football fans around the world were greeted with some unfortunate news Sunday morning before the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals faced off in Super Bowl LVI.

Long-time NFL running back and former Seattle Seahawk, Adrian Peterson, was arrested on suspicion of felony domestic violence following an altercation with his wife that day as the plane began to depart Los Angeles International Airport, bound for Houston, Texas.

Most assumed a felony charge would be filed promptly after the incident, although a recent report from TMZ news suggests otherwise.

“A rep from the L.A. DA’s office tells TMZ Sports they’ve elected not to charge the 36-year-old running back,” the exclusive article states. “But, Peterson isn’t totally in the clear just yet. The case will now be sent to the Los Angeles City Attorney … who could opt to bring misdemeanor domestic violence charges against AD (Peterson).”Peterson appeared in one game for Seattle last season after he was signed to the practice squad in December. He is now a free agent.

Super Bowl LVI ratings suggest the underdog Bengals are a big hit

Coming soon to more primetime games near you…

[mm-video type=video id=01fvt4pxhan3jty9nm7e playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fvt4pxhan3jty9nm7e/01fvt4pxhan3jty9nm7e-a22df79a2f128452f7d9e08c49fe4c81.jpg]

The Cincinnati Bengals are a hit.

That sort of idea didn’t need ratings numbers from Super Bowl LVI as proof, not with the viral sensation guys like Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase and C.J. Uzomah have become in recent weeks.

But those Super Bowl ratings sure don’t hurt, either.

Days after the big game, the NFL announced the Super Bowl was watched by 112.3 million viewers, a dramatic leap and the biggest number in recent years.

And the biggest local market rating of all? First place belonged to Cincinnati. The Los Angeles local market didn’t make the top 10.

Burrow and Co. haven’t just revived a longstanding football city — they’ve become a national commodity and continuously proven worthy of a handful of primetime appearances each season.
