LSU softball withstands ULM firepower in midweek win on Tuesday night

LSU’s winning streak extended to six games on Tuesday night against the Warhawks.

It wasn’t easy for the LSU softball team on Tuesday night in its midweek matchup against ULM. It allowed eight hits and had to overcome three separate deficits, but it ultimately pulled away to earn its 30th win of the season with a 7-4 victory.

The first inning was an eventful one. ULM (22-15) started the frame with three hits including a double that plated a pair of runs to give it the early lead.

But LSU (30-4) answered in the bottom of the first as [autotag]Ali Newland[/autotag] led off with a full-count homer. A sacrifice groundout from [autotag]Raeleen Gutierrez[/autotag] tied the game at two, but the Tigers couldn’t retake the lead.

The Warhawks retook the lead in the second with an RBI single as LSU wasn’t quite able to make a tag at home, and that ended a short start for [autotag]Emilee Casanova[/autotag], who was chased from the game in favor of [autotag]Raelin Chaffin[/autotag].

The Tigers would tie the game at three in the bottom of the frame as [autotag]Maddox McKee[/autotag] hit a two-out single to score a run. Once again, though, LSU couldn’t protect the tie as Chaffin allowed a double and an RBI single as ULM reclaimed a 4-3 lead.

But for the third inning in a row, the Tigers answered. [autotag]Karli Petty[/autotag] hit a sacrifice fly, and [autotag]McKenzie Redoutey[/autotag] hit a three-run homer in the next at-bat as LSU jumped out to a 7-4 advantage.

There were no runs scored in the final four frames, and the Warhawks struggled to keep things going on offense, though they did ultimately strand a pair of baserunners in that span.

Now, the Tigers will prepare to hit the road for a big-time matchup on the road between top 10 teams as it draws Florida for a weekend series that begins Saturday.

The Tigers’ rough stretch continued on Saturday.

The LSU softball team entered SEC play as the hottest squad in America, but things have cooled off quite a bit since then.

After dropping a series last weekend to Ole Miss, the Tigers were handed another series loss by Missouri on Saturday with a 3-2 win. Mizzou won Friday’s Game 1 10-9.

LSU had a nice start in this game with [autotag]Ali Newland[/autotag] and [autotag]McKenzie Redoutey[/autotag] hitting solo shots in the first and second innings to give the team an early 2-0 lead.

But Missouri retook the lead with a trio of runs in the third inning, and LSU couldn’t manage any more runs the rest of the game as it suffered yet another disappointing defeat.

Now, coach Beth Torina’s team will look to avoid the sweep in Sunday’s Game 3, which is set for 1 p.m. CT.

The Tigers entered the weekend as the nation’s lone unbeaten, but now they’ll have to bounce back from a series loss.

LSU was riding high coming into this weekend’s home-opening SEC series against Ole Miss after earning a sweep to begin SEC play last weekend.

The Tigers were 23-0 on the year and took Game 1 against the Rebels, but Games 2 and 3 went south. With a blowout 9-2 loss on Monday night, they dropped their first SEC series of the season and fell to 24-2 (4-2 SEC) on the year.

It was Ole Miss’ first series win in Baton Rouge since 2008.

Starting pitcher [autotag]Raelin Chaffin[/autotag] looked like she was going to get through the first two innings without allowing any damage, but with two outs in the second, she gave up a run of five straight singles.

Three runs scored, and Chaffin was yanked from the game in favor of [autotag]Kelley Lynch[/autotag]. After getting out of the second, Lynch gave up a solo shot in the third as Ole Miss jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

LSU would cut that deficit in half as [autotag]Taylor Pleasants[/autotag] hit a solo homer of her own in the bottom of the frame, and [autotag]McKenzie Redoutey[/autotag] scored on a wild pitch in the fourth.

However, LSU got into trouble again in the fifth when Lynch loaded up the bases. She allowed a run to score on a fielder’s choice, and after a walk reloaded the bases, a single scored another run.

The Tigers pulled her for [autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag], who immediately gave up a two-RBI single as Ole Miss stretched its lead to 8-2. In the sixth, it added another run off a single.

LSU couldn’t get a rally going in the seventh as it went down in order.

The Tigers will have some time off to lick their wounds before returning to the field next weekend for another road SEC series against Missouri.

LSU’s perfect start to the season came to an end on Sunday.

It’s been a magical start to the season for LSU softball, but its perfect start came to an end on Sunday with a 5-2 loss to Ole Miss. The Tigers fall to 24-1 on the year with the defeat.

LSU got the scoring started in the second inning with a sacrifice fly from [autotag]Kelley Lynch[/autotag] that scored [autotag]Karli Petty[/autotag], but that was all it managed in the frame.

In the bottom of the fourth, Petty paid it forward with a sac-fly that scored [autotag]McKenzie Redoutey[/autotag] to give LSU a 2-0 lead.

Things were going well for LSU and particularly pitcher [autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag], but with two outs in the top of the sixth, Berzon gave up a pair of RBI singles as the Rebels managed to tie the game.

Things got even worse for Berzon in the seventh as she allowed a single, and another runner reached on a fielding error. After another ball couldn’t be fielded cleanly and the ensuing throw was off, Ole Miss managed to take the lead.

The Rebels then blew the game wide open with a single that plated two more runs and gave them a 5-2 lead.

LSU put two on in the bottom of the seventh, but with two outs and the tying run at the plate, [autotag]Taylor Pleasants[/autotag] hit into a game-ending groundout.

Berzon takes the loss having pitched a complete game while allowing six hits and five runs, only two of which were earned. Now, the Tigers will try to rally back to take the series on Monday in Game 3, which is set for 6 p.m. CT at Tiger Park.

The LSU softball team entered the first weekend of SEC as the last undefeated squad in Division I. Following a road trip to Lexington against a ranked Kentucky team, things are staying that way.

The Tigers completed a sweep against the Wildcats with an 8-3 win in Game 3 on Sunday, moving to 21-0 on the year one with the first SEC series in the books.

After two scoreless innings to start the game, LSU struck first with a pair of RBI singles in the third from [autotag]McKenzie Redoutey[/autotag] and [autotag]Maci Bergeron[/autotag] to take a 2-0 lead.

Kentucky tied the game with a two-run double in the fourth that chased starter [autotag]Raelin Chaffin[/autotag] from the game, but LSU would break things wide open in the sixth inning. An [autotag]Ali Newland[/autotag] double scored a pair of runs, and the Tigers would add another on a bases-loaded walk.

UK opted for a pitching change, but that wouldn’t fix things. Redoutey hit a sac-fly, and [autotag]Karli Petty[/autotag] and [autotag]Kelley Lynch[/autotag] added RBI singles to put up a six-spot in the inning.

Kentucky hit a one-run homer in the bottom of the frame but still faced a wide gap entering the final inning. It managed a pair of base hits in that frame, but it didn’t amount to any runs.

[autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag] entered the game in the fourth and ultimately pitched the last 3.1, allowing five hits but just one earned run while striking out four.

The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday night for a midweek game against Texas before hosting Ole Miss next weekend for the home opener conference series.

LSU softball rallies in 6th to beat Illinois, stay unbeaten

The Tigers overcame a late deficit to remain perfect on the season.

The LSU softball team found itself in danger once again on Friday night to begin the Purple & Gold Invitational against Illinois, but some sixth-inning heroics from [autotag]Ali Newland[/autotag] lifted the Tigers to a 3-2 win as they remain unbeaten at 14-0 on the season.

After two shutout innings, LSU got the scoring started with an RBI bunt single from Ciara Briggs, but Illinois answered in the top of the fourth, scoring a pair of runs quickly to retake the lead and chase [autotag]Emilee Casanova[/autotag] from the game in the process.

[autotag]Raelin Chaffin[/autotag] came into the game and pitched a shutout the rest of the way, but LSU still needed to make up a run.

Newland came through in the bottom of the sixth, hitting an RBI single to tie the game, and a sac-bunt from [autotag]McKenzie Redoutey[/autotag] gave LSU the lead. Chaffin went 1-2-3 in the seventh to put the game away.

The Tigers will be back in action later Friday night for the second leg of the doubleheader with a game against San Diego State.

LSU softball holds off late Georgia Tech rally to win in Clearwater Invitational opener

The Tigers remained perfect to begin the season despite a late comeback effort from the Yellow Jackets.

LSU softball’s shutout streak came to an end on Thursday afternoon against Georgia Tech in the Clearwater Invitational opener, but its perfect record emerged unscathed.

The No. 12 Tigers held off a late Yellow Jackets rally to win 12-8 and move to 6-0 to begin the season.

It was Georgia Tech that got on the board first with a passed ball that scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but LSU responded with a trio of runs in the second. They added runs in the third and fourth innings as well before seemingly breaking the game open in the fifth.

[autotag]McKenzie Redoutey[/autotag] hit a two-run homer to get the scoring started, and the Tigers would ultimately add four runs in the frame and one more in the top of the sixth to take a 9-2 lead.

Georgia Tech would get back on the board with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but that was quickly erased by an LSU sac-fly and subsequent home run that added two more runs to the board.

Still, the Yellow Jackets wouldn’t go away. In the bottom of the seventh, it staged a four-run rally in large part thanks to a three-run bomb that chased starting pitcher [autotag]Raelin Chaffin[/autotag] from the game after allowing six earned runs and striking out five.

[autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag] finished it off, though, staving off the comeback attempt as LSU won its sixth straight to begin the year. The Tigers will be back in action in Clearwater on Friday with a ranked matchup against No. 22 Northwestern at 11 a.m.

LSU softball opens the season with a 5-0 weekend, all shutouts

The Tigers didn’t allow a run this weekend, and three of their five shutout wins came by run-rule.

You really couldn’t ask for a better start to the season than coach Beth Torina’s LSU softball team did this weekend. The No. 15 Tigers began the season 5-0, all of which were shutouts and three of which came in run-rule fashion.

On Saturday, they finished up a double-header with an 8-0 victory over Memphis in five innings, with [autotag]Emilee Cassanova[/autotag] pitching a complete game while giving up just two hits and striking out five.

With one out in the bottom of the first, LSU got going quickly. [autotag]Raeleen Gutierrez[/autotag] had a two-run single, and [autotag]McKenzie Redoutey[/autotag] added a third run with a sacrifice groundout.

The rest of the action came in the third. [autotag]Maci Bergeron[/autotag] and [autotag]Sierra Daniel[/autotag] hit back-to-back RBI singles, while two more runs scored on bases-loaded walks to [autotag]Ciara Briggs[/autotag] and [autotag]Ali Newland[/autotag] and a hit-by-pitch to [autotag]Taylor Pleasants[/autotag].

LSU will now head to Florida next weekend for the Clearwater Invitational, where it will face Georgia Tech, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Washington and Minnesota.

The Tigers began their 2024 campaign on a high note Thursday night.

The No. 15-ranked LSU softball team began its 2024 campaign on a high note, issuing an 8-0 run-rule win over in-state foe Nicholls in just five innings.

It took a bit for the Tigers’ bats to get going, but a solo homer from [autotag]Raeleen Gutierrez[/autotag] got the scoring started in the second, and a two-run triple from [autotag]McKenzie Redoutey[/autotag] opened the floodgates in the third.

[autotag]Karli Petty[/autotag] added a run with a single later in that inning, and in the bottom of the fourth, another RBI triple, this time from [autotag]Taylor Pleasants[/autotag], added three more runs.

[autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag] got the start on the mound and turned in a shutout, allowing just two hits while striking out eight batters as she got her first win of the season while pitching all five innings.

LSU will return to action at Tiger Park on Friday for a 4 p.m. game against Memphis.

6-run rally not enough as LSU softball eliminated from Baton Rouge Regional by Louisiana

The Tigers season came to an end in heartbreaking fashion on Sunday night.

An impressive rally from an early six-run deficit wasn’t enough for the Tigers to keep their season alive on Sunday night. LSU was eliminated from the Baton Rouge Regional with a 9-8 loss to Louisiana, which advances to its first super regional since 2016.

Coach Beth Torina’s team has now missed the super regional round in back-to-back seasons after previously reaching six in a row.

The game started out about as bad as it possibly could have for LSU. After a leadoff single, what should have been a fielder’s choice turned into an error as the Ragin’ Cajuns had runners at the corners.

A wild pitch from [autotag]Sydney Berzon[/autotag] allowed a run to score, still with no outs on the board. Berzon then loaded up the bases after issuing back-to-back walks. She got an out on a sacrifice groundout, but a run scored to make the game 2-0.

Another walk reloaded the bases, and then things went from bad to worse as Berzon gave up a grand slam to make it 6-0, still in the first inning. That was all that UL was able to get, but LSU found itself in quite a hole before even coming to the plate.

[autotag]Georgia Clark[/autotag] managed to get one of those runs back, leading off the bottom of the second with a solo home run. LSU was then able to get a rally going in the third.

[autotag]Savannah Stewart[/autotag] and [autotag]Ciara Briggs[/autotag] reached on errors, and a single from [autotag]Taylor Pleasants[/autotag] brought a run home. Clark followed up with a single to score two more after a Louisiana pitching change.

UL walked [autotag]Ali Newland[/autotag], and a hard-hit double into the gap from [autotag]McKenzie Redoutey[/autotag] scored two more runs and tied the game at six. That forced a pitching change, but even that couldn’t preserve the lead.

[autotag]Karli Petty[/autotag] hit an RBI single, and the Tigers took a 7-6 advantage. A flyout ended the frame, but the damage was done. At least, for a time.

The Tigers kept the run going in the fourth after a two-out double from Briggs, and Pleasants followed with an RBI single. Louisiana wasn’t going away, though.

Karly Heath hit a solo shot in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to one run, and a single put the tying run aboard. Berzon worked her way out of trouble, though, as the freshman got a groundout to end the threat.

The 8-7 score carried into the top of the seventh with Berzon looking to close things out. She put herself in danger again early on, allowing back-to-back singles. A sacrifice groundout got her a third of the way there, but it also put the go-ahead run in scoring position.

Disaster struck after that. An intentional walk from Berzon veered into the strike zone. Newland wasn’t ready for it behind the plate, and the Ragin’ Cajuns tied the game on a passed ball.

The tie wouldn’t last long. A deep single in the next at-bat scored the go-ahead run. Suddenly, LSU came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh three outs from elimination.

A two-out single from [autotag]Raeleen Gutierrez[/autotag] gave the team life and brought the winning run to the plate, but a flyout in foul territory from Stewart ended the game and LSU’s season.

The Tigers finish the year at 42-17.
