Pierre-Luc Dubois trade: Who won the Kings and Jets deal?

Now this is quite the king’s ransom for Pierre-Luc Dubois.

It wasn’t that long ago that Pierre-Luc Dubois was being penciled into the Montreal Canadiens’ 2023-24 lineup for Game 1. Instead, the Dubois to Montreal dream is dead after the Los Angeles Kings swooped in with a big offseason splash.

On Tuesday, the Winnipeg Jets sent Dubois to the Kings in a massive sign-and-trade that comes with an eight-year, $68 million extension. The deal comes just over a day removed from the highly-anticipated 2023 NHL Draft, with some major moves already made in the lead up to the event.

It’s not often we get enormous sign-and-trades like this one in the NHL, especially with how stagnant the salary cap has been. The Kings really went for it by trading for Dubois and his gifted offensive talent, but did they pay too high a price?

With the draft only one day away, let’s take a look at how the Jets and the Kings grade out in this trade for Dubois.

Ivan Provorov trade: Who won the Blue Jackets, Kings and Flyers deal?

Ivan Provorov has been dealt to the Blue Jackets as part of a massive three-way trade.

The 2023 Stanley Cup Final may currently be ongoing, but the Philadelphia Flyers certainly made a splash with this massive offseason move.

On Tuesday, the Flyers traded defenseman Ivan Provorov to the Columbus Blue Jackets, with the Los Angeles Kings sliding in as the third partner in the deal. Provorov played the last seven seasons with the Flyers, often being utilized as the team’s No. 1 defenseman after being drafted No. 7 overall in the 2015 draft.

MORE NHL: Flyers’ Ivan Provorov declined to wear pregame Pride Night jerseys, citing religious beliefs.

While there has been a glut of front office hockey news over the last few weeks, this Provorov trade kicks the NHL offseason into high gear as the first major domino to fall. Let’s take a look at how each of the Blue Jackets, Flyers and Kings grade out in this massive Provorov trade.

An Oilers fan trolled Kings fan Will Ferrell by copying his elaborate face paint

If you can beat em’, recreate their face art.

A resident of Southern California, Will Ferrell is well known for showing off his passion for the region’s professional sports teams. In particular, of late, Ferrell is a fixture at Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Kings — since both squads are in the playoffs at the same time.

With the Kings battling the Edmonton Oilers, Ferrell recently broke out some crazy face Kings-inspired face paint to show his love for his favorite hockey team. It’s cool to see such commitment from him, but there’s just one problem:

Oilers fans noticed Ferrell’s recent elaborate face paint and recreated it to a tee on Tuesday night:

If that weren’t enough salt in the wound for Ferrell, the Oilers have won the last two games — while scoring “face” goals — to take a 3-2 series lead and put the Kings on the brink of elimination. So, fans troll Ferrell’s face paint, and his team is losing the series. Brutal!

Michigan State hockey D Cole Krygier gets 2-year NHL deal

Cole Krygier and the Los Angeles Kings have come to terms on a 2-year deal

Cole Krygier has been a staple on Michigan State’s blue line over the past five years and has kept some stability through an unstable time in East Lansing. Krygier has paid his dues and all of his hard work is paying off.

The former Spartans defenseman has received a 2-year NHL entry level contract with the Los Angeles Kings. The deal will begin in the 2023-24 season.

NHL fans had so many jokes about the absurd Kraken-Kings game that ended 9-8

What a game!

Your eyes aren’t deceiving you.

An NHL game ended with 17 goals. The Seattle Kraken took down the Los Angeles Kings … 9-8! IN OVERTIME!

That’s as nutty as you’d think. There were all kinds of ties and lead changes and goalies getting peppered and so much more.

It certainly wasn’t the first time that many total goals were scored. Per ESPN, “It was the sixth game in the expansion era (since 1967-68) to feature at least 17 goals and be decided by one goal and just the second since 1984-85.”

Still, there were so many jokes, facts and tweets about it that we had to round them up:

Dylan Larkin pulled a Don Beebe by incredibly saving an empty net at the last second for Red Wings

Well, that’s one way to help force an overtime.

Rarely in hockey does pulling the goalie mean you’re on the cusp of scoring a goal.

Don’t tell that to the Detroit Red Wings, who pulled off just that with an insane sequence late in the third period of their Monday night clash with the Los Angeles Kings.

Down 4-3 and with only 90 seconds to go, the Red Wings decided to pull goalie Alexander Nedeljkovic to send in the extra attacker. The Kings, as many teams do, decided to exploit it with Viktor Arvidsson gliding to the empty net to pop in the game-sealing goal.

Well, not so fast, said Red Wing Dylan Larkin, who came in with the amazing, Don Beebe-esque save below.

The Red Wings, indeed, rode the momentum from Larkin’s unreal save into the game-tying goal from Oskar Sundqvist with just about 40 seconds to spare.

Detroit wound up falling in overtime 5-4, but as the team says, a point’s a point.

At the very least, the Red Wings are going to be playing that phenomenal Larkin save on the highlight reels all season. That’s the kind of spark that will follow you out of the rink for the rest of the year.

Former Notre Dame players on NHL rosters to begin 2022-23 season

Which familiar name is your favorite?

The weather has gotten cooler, which means it soon will be cold. That means it’s time for the 2022-23 NHL season to begin. As usual, Notre Dame has plenty of representation in the league. Amazingly, not only do the Irish have the same number of former players from the beginning of last season (10), but the same players themselves.

Maybe it’s boring to some people to not see any new Irish players begin the season in the NHL, but 17 will start in the AHL, so you have that to possibly look forward to. Until then, here are the familiar 10 names:

Michigan State hockey commit Jack Sparkes selected by Los Angeles Kings

Jack Sparkes, 2023 Michigan State hockey commit, has been selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2022 NHL Draft

Michigan State hockey is under new leadership with Adam Nightingale leading the charge and looking to rebuild the storied program. Nightingale is thought to be someone who is a strong recruiter and is already bringing in a lot of talent to East Lansing. Jack Sparkes is part of that talent influx that Nightingale plans to bring in, and it showed when Sparkes was selected in the sixth round of the 2022 NHL Draft by the Los Angeles Kings.

Sparkes is from Toronto, Ontario, where he plays in the Ontario Junior Hockey League. As a 6-foot-8, 235-pound defenseman, Sparkes provides a high upside and a unique skillset on the blue line. He is a 2023 commit for the Spartans and is expected to join the program in a year for the 2023-24 season.

Connor McDavid’s ridiculous goal at the end of the Oilers’ Game 7 win had NHL fans in awe

What. A. Goal.

Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers advanced to the second round of the NHL playoffs last night with a 2-0 Game 7 win over the Los Angeles Kings at home.

McDavid, who led the league with 123 points (44 goals, 79 assists), assisted on the first goal of the game and then sealed things late in the third period with a ridiculous goal that showed why he’s the best player in the entire league.

The 25-year-old center simply refused to quit on this play and put his team and his city on his back and lifted them into the next round with a goal that will live forever on his highlight reel.

Check this out:

Unbelievable.

NHL fans loved it.

Three Notre Dame alumni nominated for King Clancy Memorial Trophy

Hopefully, one of them wins!

With the Stanley Cup playoffs underway, it’s time to speculate who will win this year’s awards in the NHL. One award is the King Clancy Memorial Trophy. This award is presented to the player who best exemplifies leadership on his team at all times and has been a humanitarian in his community. Past winners include Pekka Rinne, Henrik and Daniel Sedin, Henrik Zetterberg, Patrice Bergeron, Vincent Lecavalier, Jarome Iginla, Ron Francis, Curtis Joseph and Ray Bourque.

Every team has a nominee, and this year, Notre Dame is well represented. That’s because three players who once suited up for the Irish are among the nominees. That means there’s a good chance Notre Dame will have one of its own be listed among some elite company, although the award only has been presented since 1988. Here are the three former Irish players to watch out for this awards season, two of which play for playoff teams:
