Former Notre Dame players on NHL rosters to begin 2022-23 season

Which familiar name is your favorite?

The weather has gotten cooler, which means it soon will be cold. That means it’s time for the 2022-23 NHL season to begin. As usual, Notre Dame has plenty of representation in the league. Amazingly, not only do the Irish have the same number of former players from the beginning of last season (10), but the same players themselves.

Maybe it’s boring to some people to not see any new Irish players begin the season in the NHL, but 17 will start in the AHL, so you have that to possibly look forward to. Until then, here are the familiar 10 names:

At least three Notre Dame alumni will be on Stanley Cup playoff rosters

Here are some guys to root for in the postseason.

Once again, it’s time for the annual competition for the Stanley Cup, the most magnificent trophy in sports. Although the slight shift in the NHL calendar means the playoffs are beginning later than we’re used to, that doesn’t make the anticipation for the most intense hockey of the year any less. Even if your team didn’t make it in this year, the high blood pressure that comes with watching these games, especially those that go into overtime, will be present. Hockey fans wouldn’t have it any other way.

If you’re a Notre Dame hockey fan, three players who have gone through the program are on the playoff rosters for their respective teams. More of them could join after their AHL teams’ seasons end or if any other needs arise. That gives Irish fans plenty of opportunities to be happy at who wins the Cup. For now, here are the three players to watch for:

Toronto Maple Leafs at Los Angeles Kings odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s Toronto Maple Leafs at Los Angeles Kings sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Toronto Maple Leafs (35-24-8) continue their road trip through SoCal against the Los Angeles Kings (25-35-6) Thursday at Staples Center at 10:30 p.m. ET. We analyze the Maple Leafs-Kings sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Maple Leafs at Kings: Projected starting goalies

Frederik Andersen vs. Jonathan Quick

Andersen has rolled up a 28-13-6 record, 2.96 goals against average and .906 save percentage across his 50 starts so far this season. Jack Campbell, the former Kings goalie, was roughed up in San Jose last time out, so the All-Star will get the nod Thursday. Andersen allowed just one goal on 25 shots in a 3-1 win against the Kings in the first meeting, Nov. 5.

Quick was on the opposite side of the 3-1 loss in Toronto, making 20 saves on 23 shots. He is 14-22-4 with a 2.91 GAA and .901 SV%. He has picked up wins in three of his past four outings, going 3-0-1 since Feb. 9.

Prediction

Maple Leafs 4, Kings 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Maple Leafs (-182) are heavy favorites on the road, and a little too rich for my blood, especially since they’re just 1-4 in their past five as a road favorite and 1-4 in their past five trips to LA. AVOID a ML play.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Maple Leafs ML returns a profit of $5.50 if they win, while a $10 wager on the Kings (+150) results in a profit of $15.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The MAPLE LEAFS (-1.5, +145) are worth a small-unit play at this price, although they might need a late empty-net goal to get over the hump. The Kings (+1.5, -176) are not worth the risk on the flip side.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 6.5 (-139) is a solid play, although the juice is a little high for my liking. Still, the Under is 10-4-1 in the past 15 meetings in this series, including the first battle in Toronto, and 6-2 in the previous eight contests at Staples Center.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Los Angeles Kings odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Wednesday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Los Angeles Kings sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

[jwplayer wcHtPTSE]

The Pittsburgh Penguins (37-18-6) will square off with the Los Angeles Kings (22-35-6) Wednesday at Staples Center at 10:30 p.m. ET (on NBCSN). We analyze the Penguins-Kings sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Penguins at Kings: Projected starting goalies

Matt Murray vs. Jonathan Quick

Murray is expected to make the start in L.A. He enters with a 17-9-5 record, 2.84 goals against average and .901 save percentage with one shutout this season. All-Star Tristan Jarry faced the Kings in the first meeting Dec. 14 in the Steel City when the Pens claimed a 5-4 shootout victory. Jarry allowed four goals on 42 shots to get the win. However, he is coming off a 5-2 loss against the Buffalo Sabres Saturday, so look for Murray to get the nod.

Quick was on the short end of that 5-4 shootout loss in December, making 23 saves on 27 shots. He has won two of his past three outings, and allowed just one goal on 31 shots last time out against a good Colorado Avalanche team in a 2-1 shootout loss Saturday.

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 8:45 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Penguins 4, Kings 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Penguins (-209) are just a little too expensive, as you need to risk two and a half times your return. Yes, Pittsburgh won the first meeting at home, but it barely scraped by in a shootout. AVOID a ML play.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Penguins ML returns a profit of $4.78 if they win, while a $10 wager on the Kings (+170) results in a profit of $17.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The PENGUINS (-1.5, +125) are going to be jockeying for seeding in the Eastern Conference, while the Kings (+1.5, -154) are simply playing out the string. Yes, the last meeting was decided in a shootout, but the Pens are easily the better team and are worth a small-unit play laying the puck line. The Pens have won four of the past five meetings.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 5.5 (-139) is worth a small-unit wager. The Over is 3-1-1 in the past five for the Penguins, while cashing the Over in four straight against the Western Conference. The Kings have had problems scoring goals, and the Under is 9-4-2 in their past 15 at Staples. Still, Pittsburgh could take care of the Over themselves on most nights.

Los Angeles Kings at Colorado Avalanche odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Los Angeles Kings at Colorado Avalanche sports betting odds, with NHL matchup analysis and picks.

The Los Angeles Kings (20-33-5) face off Saturday against the Colorado Avalanche (33-17-6) in the neutral setting of the U.S. Air Force Academy Falcon Stadium for an 8:00 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Kings-Avalanche odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Kings at Avalanche: Projected starting goalies

Jonathan Quick vs. Philipp Grubauer

Quick has had a 2020 to forget: He’s 0-7-1 with a .900 save percentage and a 3.33 goals against average since the turn of the year. This season, Quick is 11-22-3 with a .895 save % and 3.05 GAA.

The other netminder, Grubauer, has had a solid beginning of the year, going 8-3-1 with a .925 save % and 2.18 GAA. Grubauer has won four of his last five starts pushing his record to 18-12-4 on the season with a .915 save % and 2.65 GAA.

Kings at Avalanche: Odds, picks and betting tips

Prediction

Avalanche 5, Kings 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Kings +220 are coming into this game off of a 5-3 win over the Calgary Flames but lost their previous five, and the Avalanche -278 dropped their last game, 3-2 to the Washington Capitals, after winning five straight.

Colorado should have its way with Los Angeles and the neutral site location shouldn’t matter much for this game. The Kings are a decent 12-12-1 at home but awful 8-22-4 in games, while the Avalanche has a strong record wherever they play and actually have a better record on the road (18-9-2) than at home (15-8-4).

Personally, I don’t like the Kings’ chances at all here and the Avalanche -278 is priced too high. PASS ON THE MONEYLINE.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Los Angeles has lost two of its last three games to the Avalanche, giving up seven goals in both of those losses. Plus the Kings’ last six games have been decided by two or more goals.  Colorado has a slightly better against the spread record (32-24) than the Kings (30-28). Also, the Avalanche are 5-1 when favored by -200 or more whereas the Kings are 2-4 when they are a +200 or more dog. Let’s TAKE AVALANCHE -1.5 (EVEN) at the reduced vig and gamble on the much stronger Colorado side putting this game away early and/or getting an empty-net goal to get an ATS win.

Over/Under (O/U)

The past six Kings-Avalanche games have alternated between the Over and the Under with the Over cashing in their last meeting. But that streak ends here today because Avalanche games have the fifth-highest goals per game—scoring the most goals per game in the NHL—and are going against a Kings team that is 23rd in opponent’s goals per game. The Avalanche have an Over/Under record of 27-26 but that’s skewed a tad since the Under has cashed five straight Colorado games.

BET OVER 5.5 (-129).

Calgary Flames at Los Angeles Kings odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Wednesday’s Calgary Flames at Los Angeles Kings sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Calgary Flames (29-22-6) and Los Angeles Kings (19-33-5) battle at Staples Center at 10 p.m. ET Wednesday. We analyze the Flames-Kings sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Flames at Kings: Projected starting goalies

Cam Talbot vs. Jonathan Quick

Talbot is likely to draw the start against the Kings, although with this being the first half of a back-to-back situation, it very well could be All-Star David Rittich. Either way, the Flames have a pair of very favorable matchups against losing teams in Southern California in the next two days. Since Rittich is 0-1-1 with a 4.80 goals against average and .882 save percentage through two outings against the Kings this season, we’re projecting Talbot since there is no confirmation from the team.

Quick heads into play with an 11-22-3 record, 3.05 GAA and .895 SV% across his 36 starts, although he is a more respectable 8-9-1 with a 2.58 GAA and .909 SV% in 18 starts at Staples Center. He won his only start against Calgary Oct. 19 in LA, yielding just one goal on 24 shots in a 4-1 win.

Flames at Kings: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 9:25 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Flames 4, Kings 3

Moneyline (ML)

The FLAMES (-133) are just a better team right now, and the Kings (+110) cannot be trusted even though Quick has been better at home. LA has dropped five in a row at Staples Center, while Calgary is 4-1 in its past five road outings while going 6-2 in the past eight as a road favorite.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Flames to win returns a profit of $7.50, while a $10 wager on the Kings results in a profit of $11.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Flames (-1.5, +200) are a risky play in Southern California, a place they haven’t played terribly well over the years. While they’re a better team than the Kings (+1.5, -250) by leaps and bounds in the standings, Quick has had their number this season. You cannot trust Calgary on the puck line, as they’re risky enough on the moneyline. And you can’t buy the insurance and take the Kings at home, as they cost just way too much. PASS.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 5.5 (-115) goes against the trends in this series, but it’s the way to be here. Quick yields too many goals per outing. The Over is also 4-0 in Calgary’s past four on the road, and 6-2 in the previous eight overall. The Over is 8-1-1 in the past 10 against Pacific Division foes, too.

Los Angeles Kings at New York Rangers odds, picks and best bets

Analyzing Sunday’s Los Angeles Kings at New York Rangers NHL matchup, with NHL betting odds, picks and best bets

The Los Angeles Kings (19-32-5) and New York Rangers (26-23-4) square off at Madison Square Garden at 6 p.m. ET. We analyze the Kings-Rangers sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Kings at Rangers: Projected starting goalies

Jonathan Quick vs. Igor Shesterkin

Quick is expected to be back in the crease after yielding to Cal Petersen in New Jersey Saturday night. The American veteran is 11-21-3 with a 3.05 goals-against average and .894 save percentage. One of those wins came against the Blueshirts in Staples Center in the first meeting back on Dec. 10, allowing just one goal on 30 shots.

Shesterkin is confirmed to make the start Sunday. He continues to hum along, going 4-1-0 with a 2.61 GAA and .922 save percentage in his five outings, all at home. It appears he is set up to continue his success, as the Kings are on the second end of a back-to-back on the road and they limp in with a minus-43 goal differential, 30th in the NHL.

Kings at Rangers: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 7:55 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Rangers 4, Kings 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Rangers (-189) are favored by the exact same line as the Islanders were against the Kings (+155) a few days ago. L.A. fell 5-3 in that one, 3-0 last night in New Jersey and they’ll end up getting swept in the New York Metro area after this one. Still, you can’t risk nearly two times your investment. AVOID.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Rangers to win returns a profit of $5.30, while a $10 wager on the Kings results in a profit of $15.50.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The RANGERS (-1.5, +145) are much better value laying the goals, as Quick has been extremely giving. Yes, the Kings were able to come up with a rare win in the first meeting, but the home team is 4-1 in the past five in this series, with the favorite also 4-1.

If you’re into alternate bets, look to the Rangers (-2.5, +260) for a small investment and solid value.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 5.5 (-154) will have you eating a lot of chalk, but it’s a worthwhile play. The over is 15-6-2 in the past 23 games overall for the Rangers, while going 9-3-1 in their past 13 at MSG. The over is also 9-1 in their past 10 against Western Conference foes. The over is 4-1 in the previous five meetings, and 4-1 in the past five in NYC, too.

Los Angeles Kings at Washington Capitals odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Los Angeles Kings at Washington Capitals sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Los Angeles Kings (19-29-5) and Washington Capitals (35-13-5) will do battle at Capital One Arena in Washington D.C. at 7 p.m. ET Tuesday. We analyze the Kings-Capitals sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Kings at Capitals: Projected starting goalies

Jonathan Quick vs. Braden Holtby

Quick is looking to avenge a 3-1 loss at Staples Center in his first meeting with the Capitals Dec. 4. He allowed two goals on 21 shots in defeat. He has stumbled to an 11-19-3 record, 3.02 goals against average and .895 save percentage across his 33 starts this season. Surprisingly, he is 5-6-2 with a respectable 2.53 GAA and .911 save percentage in 13 starts against the Eastern Conference.

Holtby heads into this one with a 19-10-4 mark, 3.11 GAA and .896 SV% through his 35 starts. He has a sparkling 8-2-3 record with a 3.17 GAA and .898 save percentage in 14 starts against the Western Conference.

Kings at Capitals: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 11 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Capitals 5, Kings 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Capitals (-250) are too big of a risk at this price level, and the Kings (+200) aren’t worth a look even though you can double your money. The Caps have the most points in the NHL; the Kings have the worst record in the Western Conference and second-fewest points in the NHL. This is going to be a beatdown but look to the puck line for a better value. AVOID.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Capitals to win returns a profit of $4, while a $10 wager on the Kings results in a profit of $20.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The CAPITALS (-1.5, +110) are a much better value laying a goal and a half. In addition, you can bet on the winning margin in regular time, and the Caps to win by exactly 2 (+500) or 3 (+450) are awfully attractive alternative bets as well. The Kings are 1-4 in the past five trips to D.C., and the home team is 8-3 in the past 11 meetings with the favorite going 4-0 in the past four.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 5.5 (-143) will cost you rather moderate juice, but it’s a nice play. In fact, Washington has the potential to take care of the Over all on its own. While the Under dominates the trends for L.A., the Over is 22-8 in the past 30 games at home for the Caps and 5-0-1 in the past six as a favorite, too.

Los Angeles Kings at Boston Bruins odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Los Angeles Kings at Boston Bruins sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Los Angeles Kings (14-18-3) and Boston Bruins (21-7-6) lock horns at TD Garden at 7 p.m. ET Tuesday. We analyze the Kings-Bruins sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

Kings at Bruins: Projected starting goalies

Jonathan Quick vs. Tuukka Rask

Quick kicked off the road trip with a win in Anaheim on Thursday, but he took it on the chin in Pittsburgh in a 5-4 shootout loss Saturday, making 23 saves on 27 shots. He enters 9-12-2 overall with a 3.06 goals against average and .891 save percentage.

Rask comes into Tuesday 13-4-3 with a 2.24 GAA and .926 SV% and two shutouts. The Finnish native enters on a personal three-game losing skid, going 0-2-1, including a home loss against the Blackhawks in overtime Dec. 5.

Kings at Bruins: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 10:15 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Bruins 5, Kings 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Bruins (-250) are going to win this game, but risking two-and-a-half times the return is just not good business. Even if you win five out of every seven of those types of bets you’re still just breaking even despite a 71.4 winning percentage. Not good.

New to sports betting? Every $10 wagered for the Bruins to win in regulation, overtime or a shootout would profit $4 if they do so.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

BRUINS (-1.5, +115) on the puck line is the way to go, as they’re at home and Rask is due for a good showing, too. The Kings are the perfect elixir to cure the ills of the B’s, as L.A. is 1-5 in the past six in this series, and 2-5 in the past seven trips to Beantown.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 4.5 (-223) is an intriguing line on BetMGM. Quick has been routinely giving up big goal totals, and the B’s could take care of the total on their own if RW David Pastrnak and company are on their game. It’s worth a roll of the dice.

Los Angeles Kings at Pittsburgh Penguins odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Los Angeles Kings at Pittsburgh Penguins sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Los Angeles Kings (13-18-2) and Pittsburgh Penguins (18-10-4) tussle in the Steel City at 7 p.m. ET Saturday. We analyze the Kings-Penguins sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

Kings at Penguins: Projected starting goalies

Jonathan Quick vs. Tristan Jarry

Quick picked up a victory over the Anaheim Ducks Thursday, and he has back-to-back wins with just one goal allowed in each outing. He didn’t allow a goal until the final minute in his game Tuesday against the New York Rangers, a power-play tally with an extra attacker. The Under is 6-0 in Quick’s past six appearances.

Jarry picked up a shutout last time out against the Columbus Blue Jackets, and he has three shutouts across his past four starts. Overall, he is 8-5-0 with a 1.76 goals against average and .941 save percentage. It’s possible Matt Murray makes an appearance in this one, but it’s hard to imagine the Pens will go away from Jarry while he’s running hot.

Prediction

Penguins 4, Kings 1

Moneyline (ML)

The Penguins (-228) are too expensive on the moneyline, and the Kings (+185) aren’t a good play on the road against a difficult opponent. PASS, and look to the puck line instead.

New to sports betting? Every $10 wagered for the Penguins to win in regulation, overtime or a shootout would profit $4.40 if they do so.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

PENGUINS (-1.5, +125) is a great play on home ice. In four of their past five victories at home, the Pens have won by 2 or more goals, so roll the dice on a puck-line win and avoid the high risk of the moneyline.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 5.5 (+115) is a nice play at plus-money. The Under is 7-2-1 in the past 10 on the road for the Kings, and 6-2-1 in their past nine as a dog away from home. The Under has connected in four of the past five for Pittsburgh, too, while going 23-8-1 in the past 32 games at home for the Pens.
