Three things to watch for Notre Dame on 2021’s National Signing Day

There is not much drama heading into the final signing period for Notre Dame football.

There really should not be much drama for Notre Dame as the final class of 2021 signing period is set to begin today. The Irish signed 26 of their 27 commitments during the early period.

Without much drama, there really isn’t much to expect from Notre Dame this afternoon. Even with the lack of perceived drama, here are three things to expect from the Irish today.

Will running back Logan Diggs sign with Notre Dame in February?

The lone committed 2021 recruit who did not sign with Notre Dame in the early period could still end up in the Blue and Gold.

The second and final signing day for the 2021 class is fast approaching, it happens the first Wednesday of February every year. This year it’s the 3rd but since the early signing period has arrived, the majority of prospects sign in mid-December.

Brian Kelly and the Irish signed 26 players and have added a graduate transfer in quarterback Jack Coan. Typically a team can only roster 85 scholarship players, but the NCAA ruled this year would be different due to COVID-19. Players who would have normally exhausted their eligibility after this season, have the option to return. Some players have taken advantage of this, some have not.

The reason why this is important is because recruiting classes could be abnormally larger this cycle. That means that the long unsigned Notre Dame commit, running back Logan Diggs, is still in play.

Recently, his trainer, Albert Brock spoke with 247Sports Kevin Sinclair (insider article) to get a look if the talented Louisiana native was still intending on signing with the Irish. Although Brock did’t give Sinclair a definitive answer, he did give out this nugget: “We actually got on the phone today with coach Kelly and the running backs coach.”

The conversation was more about Diggs skill set and what he has been working on, but it’s still good news for the Irish with holding his commitment. Could he have signed in the early period and just didn’t make it official? Yes, but he could also flip due to the Irish signing another running back, Audric Estime.

Only time will tell if Diggs will sign with the Irish, but if I had to guess at this moment, the answer is yes. Diggs will eventually head up north and play his collegiate football in Notre Dame Stadium.

Notre Dame Recruiting update plus 2022 offensive wishlist

An update of the latest Notre Dame football recruiting news along with a 2022 offensive wish list.

The Notre Dame 2021 class is pretty much all wrapped up. With 26 players who have signed their letter of intent, Brian Kelly’s class has been pretty much maxed out. Louisiana’s Logan Diggs remains committed, but reading the tea leaves and the class having over the allotted 25 players, it’s doubtful that the running back ends up signing with the Irish on the second signing day, February 3rd.

So the focus has been turned to the 2022 class, which has 4 current commits (offensive linemen Joey Tanona and Ty Chan, safety Nolan Ziegler and tight end Jack Nickel). Let’s take a look at the most recent news on that class along with my personal wishlist of offensive prospects in that class. Next week, I’ll bring you my defensive wish list.

Notre Dame Football: 2021 Early signing day superlatives

With the 2021 early signing period having come and gone, here are some superlatives for the Notre Dame Football recruiting class.

The early signing day has come and went, with it’s normal drama which the Irish saw plenty of. There was a surprise signature from Ron Powlus Jr., two Friday flips (from MSU Audric Estime and from LSU Khari Gee) while the Irish are battling instate LSU to retain the signature of running back Logan Diggs. As we look back on the 8th best recruiting class in the nation according to the 247Sports composite, let’s take a look a some superlatives for the newest incoming Notre Dame football stars of tomorrow.

Logan Diggs updates recruiting decision

Notre Dame commit but recent LSU offer Logan Diggs made an announcement in regards to his ultimate college decision on Wednesday night.

The news of the early signing period for Notre Dame wasn’t so much about who signed as much as about the one that didn’t.

Of the 24 commitments Notre Dame had as they entered the day, 23 signed their letters of intent.

The one who did not was Logan Diggs, a running back from Louisiana.  Earlier Wednesday we were trying to figure out exactly what was going on.

As it goes for Diggs, it turns out we’ll have to wait a while to find out if he officially ends up a part of Notre Dame’s recruiting class or not.  Diggs shared his latest decision in regards to signing his letter of intent on Wednesday evening.

Is it good news for Notre Dame or is it bad?

I haven’t covered recruiting as long as some but I do know that trying to predict the decision a 17 or 18-year-old is going to make it beyond difficult.

It is worth noting that while meeting the media Wednesday afternoon that Brian Kelly feels Notre Dame is going to still add a pair of running backs and an additional member of the secondary in this class.

Notre Dame Signing Day: Where does Logan Diggs stand?

Notre Dame received 23 signed letters of intent from its 24 commitments to open the early signing period. Is No. 24 be flirting with LSU/

It was mostly quick work for Notre Dame’s coaching staff on Wednesday morning as national letters of intent began arriving early and often for the football recruiting class of 2021.

In total, 23 players officially joined the class but it was the one commit that didn’t sign his national letter of intent that is the story of the day in terms of recruiting for Notre Dame.

Running back Logan Diggs of Louisiana was the only running back commitment in the 2021 class and still calls himself a Notre Dame commitment in his Twitter profile.  However, Diggs didn’t send his letter to the Notre Dame offices Wednesday morning.

Diggs received an offer late in the recruiting game from home-state LSU, something he made public on December 9.

Then on the same day that Notre Dame extended a scholarship offer to running back Audric Estime, a current Michigan State commitment, Diggs had a cryptic tweet that ranges anywhere from being a complete nothing to being very telling.

Is he seriously weighing the late LSU offer?

Was he hurt that Notre Dame offered Estime?

Or is he simply taking his time before signing his name to the letter, which would be entirely understandable for someone making a difficult college choice?

Time will tell if Diggs ends up at Notre Dame, LSU, or anywhere in-between, but his letter not yet coming in is easily the biggest news of the start to the early signing period for Notre Dame.

Notre Dame Football: Early signing day prospect decisions to watch

There’s always plenty of drama on signing day, here are a few notable Notre Dame storylines to follow for tomorrow.

It has become increasingly common for the majority of prospects to verbally commit and then sign with their school of choice during the early signing period, which begins tomorrow. There is always drama on signing day, wether it is in mid-December or the traditional first Wednesday of February. Right now the Irish have 24 committed players, but that number could move. Here are a few things to watch for with Notre Dame players who have committed, aren’t committed, or could be on flip watch tomorrow.

Michigan State RB Commit Audric Estime Receives Offer From Notre Dame

Notre Dame has had a fine season with its ground game thanks to Kyren Williams.

Notre Dame has had a fine season with its ground game thanks to Kyren Williams. The Irish seem bent on keeping the running back position solid for years to come. They made that clear after making an offer to Michigan State four-star commit Audric Estime. This also might be insurance in case they lose running back commit Logan Diggs, who got an offer last week from LSU:

Estime is a senior at St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale, New Jersey. His strong season caught the attention of Irish running backs coach Lance Taylor. Estime also cited special teams coordinator Brian Polian when discussing the offer. It’s unknown whether Estime will sign with either Notre Dame or Michigan State this week, but the pressure to make a decision could come soon.

Estime would be a solid addition to a corps already featuring Williams, Chris Tyree and C’Bo Flemister. The downside is with all of that talent is that it might force Estime to wait his turn to get to the top of the depth chart. In that case, it might be more beneficial for him to stick with the Spartans. Whatever happens, the Irish have made it clear they value him, so there’s a lot to take into consideration.

Notre Dame Recruiting update: Two new commits, Styles Jr. falls short and more

The Irish have made it to later stages of a few elite players recruitments, multiple preferred walk-on spots offered and more. Notre Dame had big dreams of their 2021 recruiting class and despite not hitting a home run on their most desired playmaker and one of the nation’s top receivers dropping his commitment, the Fighting Irish still stand in pretty good shape.

The Irish have 20 commitments in the 2021 class and are ranked 11th nationally according to 247Sports. Although it’s not what Brian Kelly had in mind when he stated his goal was to land a class in the top five, it’s one with a bunch of high-side potential players who offer a lot of versatility where they can line up.

Here are the commitments in Notre Dame’s 2021 recruiting class. Be sure to check back often and see who has been added or removed themselves from the list.
