Seahawks Devon Witherspoon, Jaxon Smith-Njigba limited at rookie camp

The Seahawks are being extra cautious with Devon Witherspoon and Jaxon Smith-Njigba at rookie camp as both are coming off hamstring injuries.

The Seattle Seahawks welcomed the 2023 NFL draft class on Friday for the team’s annual rookie minicamp. The two first-rounders, cornerback Devon Witherspoon and wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, were present at the VMAC but were very limited participants in the day’s activities.

Coach Pete Carroll and his staff are going to be extra cautious with the rookies, who are both coming off injuries.

“Both guys had hamstring issues in the offseason, so we just want to make sure we know where they are,” Carroll told reporters. “We don’t want to go too far, too fast, there’s no reason at this point. They can still get all the learning done, there’s a lot of walkthrough plays in this process we go through, so they can get the learning and see what’s going on. They’ve been on zoom calls since the draft with our coaches, so they do understand what’s going on, now they’re putting it together.

“But we’re assessing more than anything to make sure we know where we are.”

Per the Seahawks’ website, Witherspoon did get in some early work before retiring to the sideline and Smith-Njigba was able to manage individual drills but sat out the team portion of the workout.

The Seahawks rookies and invitees return to the field on Saturday for the second day of camp.

Bears release Thursday injury report, Justin Fields listed as full participant

Justin Fields was listed as a full participant on the #Bears’ Thursday injury report

The Chicago Bears released their second injury report ahead of their Week 15 game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday. The most notable change to the report was quarterback Justin Field’s status, which changed from did not practice on Wednesday due to illness but was upgraded to a full participant on Thursday.

Among the other Bears who were listed on the report as full participants were rookie defensive backs Jaquan Brisker and Kyler Gordon, wide receiver N’Keal Harry, and cornerback Kindle Vildor. The status of Chicago’s defensive backs is a good sign for their chances of deploying an effective defense against the Eagles’ dangerous air attack, and Harry’s involvement in practice could give Fields an edge when the Bears throw the ball.

Three Bears, receiver Chase Claypool, tight end Trevon Wesco, and running back David Montgomery were all listed as non-participants. Claypool is dealing with a knee injury while Wesco was listed as having an issue with his calf. Neither of the pass-catchers participated in practice on Wednesday, and their status for Sunday’s matchup is unclear. Montgomery was listed as dealing with an illness.

Offensive lineman Larry Borom was limited on Thursday after being listed as a non-participant on Wednesday with a knee injury. This change should create some positive momentum for the second-year lineman, who has started to find his stride as part of Chicago’s front-five this season.

All in all, the Bears are likely outmatched by the Eagles on paper regardless of their injured players’ designations. The team is reeling after a loss to their divisional rival Green Bay Packers and is in desperate need of a victory against a top-tier opponent after only winning three games to this point in the season.

Fields’ status as a full participant is a good sign, though, and the team will certainly be better equipped to take on Philadelphia with their starting quarterback under center.

Seahawks QB Geno Smith on the mend after battling illness

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith is recovering from the cold he was fighting in Week 13 when he faced off against the Rams in Los Angeles.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith was listed as a limited participant in practice on Thursday due to a shoulder injury but still made his weekly appearance at the podium to speak to the media.

Smith discussed his status last from Sunday when he faced off against the Rams while battling an illness he confirmed was “a little bit of a cold.”

“I’m feeling a little better, obviously, my voice isn’t there yet,” Smith told reporters. “I’m a still a little stuffy. When you get your adrenaline going and you are in the middle of the game, you rarely think about anything else, any illnesses, or any type of injuries, and things like that.”

Whether it’s some sort of virus or physical injury, by this point in the NFL season, many players are battling something each week.

“Everyone is playing out there a little nicked up and for me, which was a little bit of a cold, but I was able to fight through it,” Smith explained. “It’s good to be able to do that, but I’m trying to get back healthy and get all the way back to 100%.”

The Seahawks final injury report of the week indicating the game-day designations will be released later Friday afternoon following the team’s walkthrough.

Wild-card weekend inactives: Seattle Seahawks host Los Angeles Rams

A look at the players who are inactive Saturday for the wild-card game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Los Angeles Rams at Lumen Field.

The Seattle Seahawks have nearly the shortest injury report of their entire season heading into the wild-card round with only a handful of players with injury designations: defensive tackle Jarran Reed (oblique), cornerback Shaquill Griffin (hamstring) and running back Rashaad Penny (knee), who was a late addition to the report.

The Los Angeles Rams, however, have one of their biggest question marks of the year, with signal-call Jared Goff listed as questionable to play following his thumb surgery.

With kickoff just over 90 minutes away, here’s a look at the inactive players on Saturday for both the Seahawks and the Rams.
