Georgia softball defeats the Lady Vols to even SEC series.

No. 3 Georgia (31-7, 7-4 SEC) defeated No. 6 Tennessee (29-6, 9-2 SEC), 3-2, Saturday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.

With the victory, the Bulldogs tied the SEC series despite being outhit by the Lady Vols, 5-4. Georgia never trailed in the contest.

McKenna Gibson went 1-for-3 for Tennessee. She recoded one RBI, while Laura Mealer, batting in the leadoff spot in place of the injured Kiki Milloy, went 1-for-4 and recorded one run.

Alannah Leach went 1-for-3 and recorded one double. Rylie West went 1-for-3 and Destiny Rodriguez went 0-for-2. She recorded one RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Payton Gottshall (12-3) recorded a loss for the Lady Vols. She pitched six innings in relief and allowed one run and one hit, while recording seven strikeouts.

Charli Orsini started for the Lady Vols. She pitched one inning and allowed two runs, three hits and one walk. Orsini recorded one strikeout.

Auburn (16-11-1, 3-9 SEC) defeated No. 4 Tennessee (28-5, 8-1 SEC), 4-2, Sunday at Jane B. Moore Field in Auburn, Alabama.

The loss ended the Lady Vols’ 20-game win streak.

Tennessee managed five hits and stranded five runners in the series finale against the Tigers.

Laura Mealer went 1-for-4 for Tennessee. She recorded one RBI. Taylor Pannell went 1-for-2, totaling one RBI and one walk.

Sophia Nugent went 1-for-3 and recorded one double, while McKenna Gibson went 1-for-2. She recorded one double and one walk.

Karlyn Pickens (16-3) started for the Lady Vols. She pitched 5.1 innings and allowed four runs (three earned, four hits and two walks, while recording four strikeouts.

Tennessee scored five runs in the sixth inning for a run-rule victory.

Zaida Puni went 1-for-3, recording one home run, three RBIs and one run, for Tennessee. Destiny Rodriguez went 2-for-3, recoding one double, one RBI and one run.

Laura Mealer went 3-for-3. She recoded one double, three RBIs and one run, while Sophia Nugent went 2-for-2. She recorded two RBIs and two doubles,

Taylor Pannell went 2-for-3 and recorded two runs.

Karlyn Pickens (14-2) pitched six innings. She allowed three hits and two walks, while recording 10 strikeouts.

Monday’s win is Tennessee’s 11th consecutive. The Lady Vols scored nine runs in the second inning.

Sophia Nugent went 4-for-5, recording two runs, one RBI and one stolen base for the Lady Vols.

Giulia Koutsoyanopulos went 2-for-5 and recorded one double, one triple, two runs and three RBIs for Tennessee.

Laura Mealer went 2-for-3, recording two RBIs, one run and one stolen base, while McKenna Gibson totaled two hits, one run and one RBI.

Monday’s win is the fifth consecutive for the Lady Vols. Tennessee hit four home runs against Longwood.

Kiki Milloy went 2-for-4, recording one home run, two RBIs, two runs and one stolen base for Tennessee.

Rylie West went 2-for-4, recording one home run, two RBIs, two runs and one stolen base, while Zaida Puni went 2-for-3 with one home run, one double, one run and two RBIs.

Laura Meeler hit two extra-base hits, including one home run and one double, for Tennessee. She also recorded two RBIs.

No. 9 Tennessee (10-4) opened its home portion of the 2024 schedule with a pair of five-inning victories in the Tennessee Classic on Saturday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.

The Lady Vols run-ruled Stetson (6-10), 8-0.

Kiki Milloy went 1-for-2 and hit a solo home run, while Zaida Puni hit a three-run home run for Tennessee. Laura Mealer also hit a three-run triple.

Tennessee’s Karlyn Pickens pitched a five-inning complete game. She allowed one hit and recorded three strikeouts.

The Lady Vols also defeated Brown (3-4), 9-1.

Laura Mealer brings ‘middle infield depth, explosive offensive threat’ to Lady Vols

Laura Mealer transferred to the Lady Vols from Middle Tennessee State on June 16.

Tennessee head coach Karen Weekly discussed Mealer joining the Lady Vols on Thursday.

“Laura brings us middle infield depth and an explosive offensive threat,” Weekly said in a press release. “She has a rare combination of power and speed and has put up impressive home run and stolen base numbers during her time at Middle Tennessee. Her competitive spirit will fit in well with our team culture. We are excited to have another homegrown talent join the Lady Vols.”

Mealer played second base and shortstop for the Blue Raiders from 2022-23. She started 125 games and made the 2022 Conference USA All-Freshman team.
