Instant Analysis: Jalen Cook leads LSU past Lamar

Jalen Cook’s 17 points led the Tigers as they cruised to a win over Lamar.

Jalen Cook’s second appearance since returning to LSU was even better than the first. He led the Tigers with 17 points as they got back in the win column with an 87-66 win over Lamar on Thursday night.

LSU jumped out to a 45-26 lead at halftime, and though it couldn’t stretch that lead much in the second, coach Matt McMahon’s team still cruised to a much-needed win as it’s finally close to full strength.

Cook wasn’t the only transfer addition who starred. [autotag]Carlos Stewart[/autotag] scored 16 points, while [autotag]Jordan Wright[/autotag] and [autotag]Will Baker[/autotag] followed closely behind with 15 and 12, respectively.

There were a lot of positive signs from the offense, but the defense held up, as well as the Tigers forced 19 turnovers. They also scored more than half of their points (44) in the paint.

It will take a lot more than a win over Lamar to get the season back on track, but it’s a start. LSU will finish up non-conference play with another winnable game against Northwestern State on Dec. 29 before things kick up a notch with SEC play starting against Texas A&M on Jan. 6.

How to watch, betting odds as LSU men’s basketball hosts Lamar on Thursday night

The Tigers look to stay above .500 as they host a struggling Lamar team on Thursday night.

Coming off a disappointing 11-point loss against a ranked Texas team, LSU returns to the Pete Maravich Assembly Center for what should be a much more manageable matchup.

Lamar comes to town sitting at 4-6 on the season, and the Cardinals haven’t beaten a team that ranks higher than No. 284 in the NET. In their last outing, they lost by three points to Southern Miss.

LSU did get a boost in the Texas loss in the form of Jalen Cook’s debut, and he’ll look to build off a solid first performance in this game.

Here’s everything you need to know to follow this game, including the latest betting odds from BetMGM.

Alabama MBB reaches out to highly-coveted, Lamar transfer Nate Calmese

The Alabama men’s basketball coaching staff recently reached out to Lamar transfer Nate Calmese, according to On3’s Joe Tipton. He was the Cardinals leading-scorer last season.

The Alabama coaching staff has reached out to Lamar transfer Nate Calmese, according to On3’s Joe Tipton.

Calmese is a 6-foot-2 guard out of Gilbert, Arizona. He spent one season at Lamar before entering his name into the transfer portal earlier this month.

In his stort time with the Cardinals, Calmese averaged 17.6 points per game, shooting 48.1% from the field. He was the staple of Lamar’s backcourt in a down year. The Cardinals finished the season with a 9-22 record.

The program’s lack of success has not impacted his interest from other programs. Several other schools that have reportedly reached out are Arkansas, Arizona, UCSB, and Cincinnati.

It is not clear as to how interested Alabama is in Calmese. However, it is still something to monitor with Jahvon Quinerly possibly entering the 2023 NBA draft.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Alabama basketball program and its reported interest in the transfer portal.

LSU has ‘Little’ problem crushing the Cardinals in midweek win

Christian Little got his first start of the season in a 9-2 win over Lamar.

[autotag]Christian Little[/autotag] got his first start of the season as LSU welcomed the Lamar Cardinals to Alex Box Stadium for a midweek game on Wednesday night, and the Tigers had no problems with Lamar as they won 9-2.

There has been a lot of chatter about where Little fits into this pitching staff going forward. Should he be a starter, a reliever, or a closer? We’ve mainly seen him used in a closing role so far and he has excelled at it. He entered tonight’s game 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA.

That ERA now has a blemish after tonight’s game, but it is still under 1.00. Let’s get to the recap and see what happened.

LSU got the scoring started in the first inning as [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] hit an RBI double to right field to score [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] and [autotag]Brady Neal[/autotag] hit an RBI single to score White to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second inning, Crews hit an RBI single to score [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] and White followed that up with a three-run ‘Tommy Tank’ to right field to extend the lead to 6-0 after two innings.

Lamar started the fourth inning with a solo homer to give Little his first run allowed all season, but that is all the Cardinals were able to get against him before [autotag]Will Hellmers[/autotag] came in to pitch at the start of the fifth inning.

Hellmers was pulled in the top of the sixth inning after Lamar got two runners on base with only one out. [autotag]Garrett Edwards[/autotag] came in and both runners advanced a base when a ball got by the catcher. The Cardinals then plated one of those runs on an RBI single to cut the lead to 6-2.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] hit a ‘Klinger Dinger’ to left center field to give the Tigers a little bit of breathing room with a 7-2 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] hit an RBI single to left to score Crews and [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] hit an RBI double to left to give LSU a 9-2 lead headed to the ninth inning.

Edwards stayed in to pitch the top of the ninth inning as he closed out the 9-2 Tiger win. With the win, LSU moves to 12-1 on the season. The Tigers will welcome the Samford Bulldogs to Baton Rouge for a weekend series starting on Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT.

No. 1 LSU vs. Lamar: How to watch, stream, preview for Wednesday night midweek contest at The Box

Here’s what you need to know to follow Wednesday night’s game against the Cardinals.

Coming off a perfect 4-0 weekend at Alex Box Stadium against Butler and Central Connecticut in which the Tigers earned three run-rule wins, LSU is back on the diamond on Wednesday night for a home matchup against the Lamar Cardinals.

The Cardinals (10-2) began the season 9-0 before dropping two of three against Penn this past weekend, though they did manage to take the rubber match on Sunday. LSU (11-1), meanwhile, won all of its games by at least 10 runs and remained the unanimous No. 1 team in the polls following the weekend.

Lamar is led by seventh-year coach Will Davis, a former LSU catcher and later assistant under [autotag]Paul Mainieri[/autotag] from 2008-15.

“I have a lot of respect for (Lamar coach) Will Davis and his program,” coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] said in a release. “He does a great job; I think he’s put that roster together about as well as you can. They have veteran players who are competitive and tough. They also use their pitchers the right way, so we’ve got a lot of preparation to do.”

Here’s everything you need to know to follow this one, which is set to start at 6:30 p.m. CT.

LSU’s baseball game against Lamar postponed

No makeup date has currently been set for the game against the Cardinals.

Due to the threat of inclement weather, Tuesday night’s baseball game against the Lamar Cardinals has been canceled.

LSU was set to play the Cardinals at The Box as a tune-up game for this weekend’s series against No. 7 Arkansas Razorbacks in Fayetteville, Arkansas. It was a good week for the Tigers, who went 4-0 with a weekend sweep over Mississippi State, their first sweep in a conference series since 2019.

This is the third midweek game that has been postponed for LSU this season. The prior two were rescheduled for the following day, but a makeup date for this one hasn’t been announced.

The Tigers will likely return to the field this weekend in what will be a Thursday, Friday, and Saturday series in Fayetteville against the Razorbacks. [autotag]Ma’Khail Hilliard[/autotag] is the likely starter for Game 1, [autotag]Blake Money[/autotag] is likely to start Game 2, and TBA on the Game 3 starter.

Since coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] reconfigured the pitching rotation, [autotag]Samuel Dutton[/autotag] has seen the bulk of the Game 3 starts.

LSU is currently 23-9 (7-5 SEC) on the year. For all updates on LSU baseball and full game recaps, stay tuned to LSU Wire.
