LeBron James hopes there’s a tribute for Kobe at every road game

The Los Angeles Lakers played their first road game since the late Kobe Bryant, his daughter, Gianna, and seven others passed away in a helicopter crash.

On Saturday night, the Los Angeles Lakers played their first road game since the late Kobe Bryant passed away in a helicopter crash, along with his daughter, Gianna, and seven others.

The Sacramento Kings put on a moving tribute for Bryant and Gianna, and following the game LeBron James spoke of how he hopes a tribute happens at every road game. The Lakers defeated the Kings 129-113 to erase a two-game skid.

“We’re prepared for it. We understand it,” James said, per Spectrum SportsNet. “We hope it happens every night just because of the legacy that he’s left behind. But we’re prepared for it as a team, as an organization, and we’re going to continue to get through it.”

The tribute consisted of clips of Bryant playing the Kings and some shots of Gianna playing basketball. The video was filled with respect and admiration for Bryant, who played against the Kings in three consecutive playoff series from 2000-2002.

During the 2002 Western Conference Finals, the Lakers defeated the Kings in seven games, and Bryant averaged 27.1 points per game and 6.3 rebounds.

The Lakers and the rest of the NBA are mourning the loss of one of the game’s greats. Not only was Bryant a stellar basketball player, but he was a motivator who inspired so many people to be their best selves.

Los Angeles will play the San Antonio Spurs at Staples Center on Tuesday.

Prediction

Lakers 118, Blazers 113

Moneyline (ML)

The Lakers (-910) are massive moneyline favorites over the Trail Blazers (+600) in their first game back since Kobe Bryant’s tragic death. While this would usually be an easy bet on the Lakers, there’s just no telling how this Lakers team might play after such a long layoff. I’ll PASS on this bet in favor of the spread.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Lakers (-12.5, -115) are double-digit favorites over the TRAIL BLAZERS (+12.5, -106) at home. It seems like far too many points considering Portland has just upset the Houston Rockets (125-112) and Indiana Pacers (139-129) in back-to-back games. I like the Lakers to find a way to win this game, but expect the Blazers to keep this close.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total for this Western Conference matchup is set at 229.5 points, which feels about right considering how explosive these offenses can be from night-to-night. Both teams are averaging over 113 points per game and have scorers all over the court. Look for this to be another high-scoring contest with the OVER 229.5 (-110) hitting in Los Angeles.

Warriors Stephen Curry speaks on the passing of NBA legend Kobe Bryant

For the first time since his death, Stephen Curry spoke on the passing of NBA legend, Kobe Bryant.

It’s been a handful of days since a fatal helicopter crash claimed the lives of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven others, yet the news is still rippling throughout the NBA world.

In days since Bryant’s tragic death, players and teams have been doing what they can to honor his legacy. Several players from the Warriors have taken to social media to share their thoughts on the passing of Bryant. Draymond Green, D’Angelo Russell and Stephen Curry have all posted emotional messages reacting to Bryant’s sudden death.

In the Warriors’ first game since the loss of Bryant, both the 76ers and Golden State paid tribute by starting the game with an eight and 24-second violation. Against the Warriors, 76ers center, Joel Embiid wore Bryant’s No. 24 instead of his No. 21.

Following the Warriors game in Bryant’s hometown of Philadelphia, swingman, Alec Burks changed his No. 8 jersey to No. 20 with respect to Bryant.

During the Warriors matchup with the Boston Celtics, Curry had a courtside interview with TNT reporter, Allie LaForce, and was asked about Bryant. Before getting to basketball, Curry spoke about Bryant, the father.

There’s not a lot that you can say about how much Kobe meant on and off the floor — Then you see the pouring of videos and just the way he embraced his kids every chance he could, the way he shared his career and love with each every single one of them — I mean, honestly, this whole situation sucks — You pray for the family through this whole process that they feel comfort and support the best that they can — It hurts, as a father, knowing the hole that he’s not able to fill anymore, and, obviously, for Gigi, too — I know the whole NBA family and the whole world, really, has their back.

Curry told LaForce he “idolized” Bryant on the court when he was growing up.

That’s one of the toughest parts of the week, as I was coming up in the game he was a guy that we idolized — imitating his moves out on the court and anytime he was on TV, you wanted to watch and lock into what he was doing — he was always about greatness and you appreciate that so much.

Curry and the Warriors will have the chance to honor Bryant at Chase Center when they return to San Francisco on February 8 to host the Los Angeles Lakers.

After history in 2016, Warriors tune in for Kobe Bryant’s final game

Steve Kerr said after the Warriors won their historic 73rd regular-season game, in the locker room, the team tuned in to watch Kobe Bryant’s final NBA game.

On April 13, 2016, the Golden State Warriors made NBA history, winning their record-setting 73rd regular-season game. After taking down the Memphis Grizzlies 125-104, Golden State went into the locker room not to celebrate, but to watch the final game of an NBA legend.

On the same night, Kobe Bryant suited up for the last game of his NBA farewell tour against the Utah Jazz. Bryant made it memorable, scoring 60 points on 22-of-50 shooting from the field, leading Los Angeles to a 101-91 in the final game of his storied NBA career.

In the wake of a fatal helicopter crash that tragically claimed Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven others’ lives, Steve Kerr was asked by Anthony Slater of The Athletic if he remembers Bryant’s epic final performance.

I do remember it — we made history and stayed out on the floor — it was a celebration out on the court and we stayed out on the floor for quite a while and then we all went in the locker room and the game was on — everybody’s whispering, ‘Kobe’s got 40’ and we watched the last few minutes as he racked up the points — players were all watching on their side of the locker room, and coaches were all in our locker room watching — it was an incredible night.

Kerr and the Warriors were able to celebrate Bryant’s life against the Philadelphia 76ers with an eight and 24-second violation at the start of their game.

The Warriors will have a chance to honor Bryant in San Francisco when they return to Chase Center on February 8 against his former team, the Los Angeles Lakers.

D’Angelo Russell reacts to loss of former Lakers teammate Kobe Bryant

D’Angelo Russell uses Instagram to react to the loss of his former teammate Kobe Bryant.

Long before D’Angelo Russell suited up in his No. 0 Golden State Warriors white and blue jersey, the Ohio State product was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the second overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft. Los Angeles legend, Kobe Bryant was one of Russell’s first teammates in the NBA.

Before Bryant’s retirement from the NBA, he spent one season alongside the newest Golden State Warrior, Russell. Russell, with only one year of college basketball experience, was playing alongside a five-time champion in his first season in the NBA.

Earlier in the 2019-20 season, Russell credited Bryant’s lessons from his rookie season after closing out a much-needed win for Golden State against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Bryant tragically passed away in a fatal helicopter crash alongside his daughter Gianna, and seven others in Calabasas, California, on Sunday.

One day later, the devastating news is still rippling through NBA circles. Bryant’s impact has been felt across the league with games starting with 24-second violations to honor the fallen All-Star.

Players around the world have weighed in on the loss of Bryant, with several Warriors players, including both Draymond Green and Stephen Curry each paying tribute.

In response to the devastating news of Bryant’s death, Russell went to Instagram to pay tribute to his fallen teammate.

Watched you closer than ever man, learned more than I could in such a short time, asked you more questions than ever. True Role ModeI. I find myself hearing every bit of advice you ever gave me. #legendary #mambamentality

The entire Golden State team will be able to honor Bryant on Tuesday when they travel to Philadelphia for their first game since his death. Following Golden State’s five-game road trip, the Warriors will host Bryant’s team in their first game back in the Bay Area on February 8.

Draymond Green posts emotional message following loss of Kobe Bryant

Draymond Green went to Instagram to post a heartfelt message in regards to the loss of NBA legend Kobe Bryant.

Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna, along with seven others, tragically passed away in a fatal helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, on Sunday morning. The loss of a basketball icon like Bryant has caused an outpour of emotion from players across the league.

The teams in action on Sunday, following Bryant’s death, honored him by taking a 24-second violation to start the game as chants of “Kobe” echoed through arenas across the NBA.

The home of the Warriors, the Chase Center in San Francisco, doesn’t host a game until February 8. In the meantime, Golden State’s home dedicated its outdoor video monitor in honor of Bryant.

Players not in game-action went to social media to pay their respect to Bryant and his family. Stephen Curry, along with several other current members of the Golden State Warriors, chimed in with tributes to the late legend.

Draymond Green, who used Twitter to react to the news of Bryant’s death initially, later went on Instagram to send a heartfelt message about the five-time NBA champion.

On Monday morning, Green used Instagram to share his thoughts on the passing of a “big brother” figure.

I’ve waited and waited with hope that this bad dream would end and I never had to make this post. Hoping that someone would report that it wasn’t You in that helicopter like they initially thought. I went to sleep on the couch yesterday while they talked about you on TV. I thought I’d wake up and the story would be gone. Only to wake up to more details of you being GONE. Kobe, I thank you for being the person that you were, the big brother that you were. Not only to myself but to many others. You left a legacy that’ll NEVER be forgotten. We lost one of the good guys. I’ll continue to pray for the Bryant family as well as all the other families affected by this horrific tragedy! RIP BEAN #GoneTooSoon

The Kobe-LeBron rivalry showed what I love about basketball: friendship

The Kobe-LeBron rivalry represented what’s best about basketball: friendship.

Whenever I saw Kobe Bryant and LeBron James play against or with each other, it was always one of the most exciting times I can remember watching hoops.

Bryant was among nine people who died in a helicopter crash Sunday in Calabasas, California. He was 41. Bryant’s daughter, Gianna, also died in the crash. Bryant is survived by his wife Vanessa and three daughters.

With the world losing an icon, it’s hard to put into words how much Bryant meant to basketball and the people who love the game. A five-time champion, Bryant was arguably synonymous with basketball. He was one of the purest hoopers to ever grace this Earth. And his loss is bigger than the game.

But thinking back on the rivalry between Bryant and James, one of the most famous rivalries in hoops history, reminds me of the friendly, yet competitive battles I have with my close friends.

Because for all their competitive battles, Bryant and James were friends who simply enjoyed sharing the court together. They may not have hung out at each other’s houses, but basketball doesn’t get much purer than when LeBron and Kobe went at it. To this day, playing basketball with my friends or talking about the sport with them is what makes my passion for the game shine bright.

Any time I play against one of my friends, I know it’s going to be a hard day on the court. My friends know all my moves, and shots are hard to come by. But at the same time, sharing the floor with them is what makes basketball so fun. The friendships I’ve created through basketball are some of my strongest ones.

Bryant, one of the best scorers the game has seen, wouldn’t hold back on anyone — and he especially didn’t hold back on James. And James, one of the smartest players ever, would control games like only he can while playing Bryant.

In 22 regular season meetings, James and Bryant brought out the best in each other. According to Basketball Reference, James averaged 28.2 points, 7.4 rebounds and 7.3 assists in games against Bryant. Bryant averaged 24.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.2 assists. James had a 16-6 head-to-head record against Bryant.

The respect the two players had for each other was endless. And it dated back long before LeBron was ever on an NBA court. Bryant’s last tweet congratulated James for passing him on the all-time scoring list. Following the Los Angeles Lakers loss against the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday, James spoke about what Bryant meant to him.

For me, basketball is about friendships. That’s part of why the news of Bryant’s passing hit me so hard. It seemed as if I talked with my friends all day about it. A good deal of my friends love basketball, and for us, basketball truly does give a spark to our lives.

That’s why for all the times I’ve played against my friends, playing on the same team has been much sweeter. Playing basketball with your friends consists of having an unspoken language on the court. My friends and I always seem to be in sync when playing pickup hoops.

While they never played together on an NBA team, Bryant and James did get to play together for Team USA in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. Bryant and James were electric while on the 2008 Redeem Team. Both players averaged at least 15.0 points per game, and they were crucial in leading the U.S. to the gold medal.

But watching the fun-loving, behind-the-scenes videos of their time with Team USA is even better. The video below is from the 2008 Olympics, and James was mimicking Bryant’s mannerisms, including when Bryant would call for an isolation.

The Kobe-LeBron rivalry was a rivalry in the sense that it was two greats giving each other their best.

But to its core, it was what basketball represents to me: friendship.

Members of the Golden State Warriors react to the loss of Kobe Bryant

Golden State Warriors players, including three-time champion Draymond Green, reacted to the tragic passing of Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna on Sunday morning in a helicopter crash outside Los Angeles.

News of the tragic death of Kobe Bryant has swept across not only the NBA but the entire globe. Bryant, 41, his daughter, Gianna Maria, 13, and seven others were killed when their helicopter crashed in Calabasas, California, on Sunday morning.

The magnitude of the five-time NBA champion’s death has sent ripples through the Association. In one of the darkest days in league history, NBA games started with 24-second violations to honor Bryant, whose No. 8 and No. 24 jerseys were retired by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2017.

Those not in action on Sunday poured their emotions and shared their memories of Bryant onto social media, including members of the Golden State Warriors.

Three-time NBA champion Draymond Green, like many, was “stunned” by the news of Bryant’s death.

Warriors rookie Eric Paschall, reacted with a trio of tweets. The New York native tweeted “Prayers up,” attaching a picture of Bryant and his family. Paschall later responded when reports surfaced that Bryant’s daughter, Gianna Maria, also perished in the crash.

To honor the fallen legend, Mitchell called upon the NBA to retire Bryant’s No. 24 across the league.

Another Golden State rookie, Jordan Poole, went to Instagram to post a photo in respect of Bryant and his daughter.
